This was a very satisfying conclusion. We pick up right where the first book left off and we hit the ground running. So many secrets are revealed and we finally see who the enemy really is and what’s been going on with Zai. The climax/battle was long and again….satisfying. I didn’t feel shortchanged at all with it. We even got a short epilogue which made me happy to see where Maia and Zai end up.
Now that both books are out I recommend reading back to back like one long book!
I read the first book and just wanted to know where the author was going and how it would end. I can't say I enjoyed either book at all. In book one, the couple's relationship felt forced. I didn't believe the h's motivation to get to know the H - despite her suspicions about him. In the second book, there was still a disconnect between the couple. Spoilers...
When they are first intimate the H thinks it will somehow kill him - although he has apparently never bothered to ask any questions or read any reports about the danger. The h ignores that and basically says, don't worry about it. Huh? Then, eventually, it is revealed that due to his promiscuity elsewhere they lied and said it would kill him. The person who tells him the truth is amused that he fell for it. (I would have been amused too, but the storyline not interesting enough to warrant my amusement.)
There are other examples to illustrate weaknesses in the book, but I won't belabor the point. This story is amateurish and has no excitement even though it is supposed to be about some very dramatic events. But, the writing fails to evoke strong feelings. I never got lost in the story. Bottom line: Interesting concept, but the execution never lived up to its potential.
I think this series could've been so much better had a bit more time been spent developing the characters and the world. The most glaring lack was that of the culture of the Estians. It just wasn't there and they read like Americans on Earth, all of them, even the ones who stayed on Estios presumably. At the end, Maia and Zairyen marry after he defeats his father, his parentage a surprise but more so the fact that he beat his father so quickly when his father has spent so much more time mastering the dark arts was inconceivable to me. That Grams is also an Estian wasn't a surprise, I figured something was up given how long it took her to meet Zairyen but I wasn't expecting that the reason she was disappearing all the time was because of the object Zairyen's dad left inside of her body. In any case, Zairyen's hurt over the betrayal by Fos lasted the longest in this book and we learn that the whole death by touch was a lie made up to keep Fos and Zairyen out of human women's pants while on earth and nothing more. Made no sense to me anyway.
I read both books. First book left more to be desired. Maia seemed to become a secondary character to Zai’s story and not a co-lead. I don’t really remember too much about her outside of being overworked and unfulfilled in her job so much so that she was severely depressed and went to stay with her only living relative Edie and encountered a handsome but socially awkward man. Then a series of none dates progressed to more.
I enjoyed how in this book things came together and I got to read more of what was going on - past and present. I guess the relationship between Zai and Maia had evolved into more, Fos was in too deep at this point, and Zai was trying to figure things out what was going on within his body and with his powers. The revelation about grandma Edie was eye opening. Maarg was pure evil. Fos was clutch. I enjoyed this read!
Was this a is romance novel or just sci-fi with some love scenes?
I liked the concept of the novel but was disappointed that it did not have a natural flow to it as I read. I felt that it was more about Zai and Zai’s powers than it was about the relationship between him and Maia. The loves scenes were a little corny as well but other than that it was an okay read.
Answered so many questions! I'm so invested in this Estios universe. I need more and would like Folfos to have a story! I just loved the story telling and Zai and Maia were the best couple!
