Once again enjoyed reading this author's words. After meeting Liam and Nia in Imperfect, I was looking forward to getting more of their individual stories.
Both Nia and Liam have grown up with difficult pasts and in turn it makes them kindred spirits when they meet each other. Whilst it might take Nia a short while to agree to seeing Liam, this is quite a fast burn story and it's something I've found I like with Ari's writing. It's not your stereotypical dancing around each other with sometimes immature behaviour for a long period, before something brings them together type storyline. Instead, both of these characters are aware of what they want after meeting each other and they go for it like mature adults.
I really liked Liam in particular, I enjoyed him in book 1 and seeing his charming and flirty, yet determined and protective character was really sweet in this. Likewise, I loved that despite Nia's past and lack of confidence in her appearance, she's confident in what she wants and isn't constantly self doubting herself. And it was really heart-warming to see that she had such a good relationship with her mother after everything that happened... I think a lot of people would have gone the other way, blamed their mother and ended up having a bad relationship with them.
One of my favourite things about this story though was the way certain topics were brought up in a natural way. This book address things like domestic abuse, sexual assault and poverty amongst other things but the way it's written felt very authentic and not like many other books where you can tell a character has just been added to the story to address a specific topic, e.g. racism. Similarly, I'm not sure if it was intended, but I liked the way we got to see both a good and bad perspective of the police. With Damir's situation being brought up again in this, we got to see the negative side, but with Nia's story and the Detective from the initial case, we got to see a positive aspect. I felt like this was quite relatable, especially at a time when people are very divided in their opinions of the police force, so I think it was a nice way to show that you can have good and bad eggs.
Overall, a well written story with more of an insta-love but with genuine respect and feeling. It addresses some very relatable topics, in depth and had me thinking about what it would be like to be in some of the characters shoes. Will be interesting to see if we get more from this series, but so far I've enjoyed this book and the first one.

TW: Domestic Abuse, Past Trauma, Sexual Assault. This book goes into some depth on a number of difficult topics. Please pay heed to any trigger warnings the author may have noted themselves.
Scarred is book 2 in the Unwavering Love series. Although it could be read as a stand-alone, I would recommend reading Imperfect (book 1) first, in order to have a more enjoyable reading experience.
