After losing the election for Sheriff, Caitlyn is offered a spot in the next class of U.S. Marshals. When she graduates, she and Renegade, her K-9 partner will be the K-9 unit for her area. During this time, she and Cole must survive the distance and new murders in their small community of Moose Creek and some connected robbery cases.
As usual, Burnett writes a riveting story of intrigue and suspense filled with great characters, plot twists, and heart pounding action. She writes such vivid descriptions that you are pulled into the story and feel like you are right there witnessing the action. I love the dynamic between Caitlyn and Colt. Their relationship is strong and shows through in everything they do. Caitlyn kicks a$$ as K-9 handler for the U.S. Marshals. Cole is perfect for her. I have loved this series and cannot wait to read what comes next.
I received a review copy of this book from the author. I am voluntarily leaving a review.
If you have never read Jodi Burnett, her Tin Star Series is an excellent series to start with. These books can be read in any order and enjoyed, but to get the most pleasure out of them, they should be read in the order in which they were written. So, with that said, I advise you to rush on over to Amazon and grab your copies of Renegade and Maverick, books 1 and 2 in this series, before you read Marshal. If you don’t read them before reading Marshal, you will read them as soon as you finish Marshal, while you wait for book 4 to arrive.
Marshal Book 3 in the Tin Star Series, Jodi Burnett’s best action-thriller to date. Picking up where Book 1 leaves off, Catelyn Reed loses the election for sheriff of Moose Creek to Colt Branson, her lifelong friend and love interest. Just as her fate sinks in, she gets a call from the U.S. Marshal in charge of the Wyoming District who invites Catelyn to join the Marshall service and become the Wyoming District’s K9 element.
Within days of graduating from marshal training, she becomes involved in the search for three men on a multi-state crime spree, robbing and killing people in Colorado, Wyoming, Montana and Utah. A case that will test Catelyn’s emotional and physical fortitude, as well as the emotional relationship between her and Colt. This story has more twists and turns than a Diamond Back Rattler.
Marshal is a nonstop thrill ride, a page burner, with an ending that I never saw coming, an ending that will blow you away.
(4.5) If you like K9's (or any dog) law enforcement in a small town and watching relationships change, grow along with suspense, intrigue, mystery this is the series for you. You have Caitlyn , Cole and the criminal point of view. As always Jodie throws a twist out there and I freely admit, I was waiting for her to pop up and say, surprise, gotcha. What a mind blowing concept. OK, not the concept, but it was unexpected. Loved the strength and determination of Caitlyn. Love Ren too :) This book encompasses family, farm life and shows the self doubt and second thoughts we all do in a relationship. More so in Dylan and McKenzie, but Caitlyn and Cole has their moments. I am a little flummoxed with all that Cole is, he still is a step behind Caitlyn in questioning scenarios, or what should be/could be important. And that pool table scene - is that going to come back and bite us in book 4? Argh this book makes you feel and leaves you invested. Thank you for the arc! I freely volunteer my thoughts and opinions.
Caitlyn’s first case as a new U.S. Marshal in a K9 unit, along with her dog, Renegade, hits too close to home. And too close to those she holds nearest and dearest to her heart. Drama, intrigue, a jewel theft, robberies, danger, multiple murders, drugs, a kidnapping, a surprise accomplice, and more! Caitlyn’s longtime boyfriend, newly elected Sheriff Colt Branson, gets drawn into the case when it lands in his jurisdiction. Can Caitlyn and her team, along with Colt and his deputy, bring down the bad guys? As if the current case isn’t enough, there are personal relationships and a family illness to deal with.
I was given an advance copy. This review is my honest opinion.
Caitlyn & Colt had to keep their relationship seperate from work. Since they both worked for the sheriffs office, one had to move on. Since Colt won the vote for sheriff, Caitlyn started looking when a chance for her & Renegade to become part of the US Marshalls division. It was hard for her being away from her family since her dad was sick but she did it and graduated. Then came her first case and what a doosey it was. A great story that keeps you on the edge of your seat. Can't wait for more.
Deputy Caitlin Reed needs a career change and is excited to be recommended for enrollment at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center to become a United States Marshal. She along with her K9 Renegade will be the first K9 team in their area. Her love interest, Colt Branson, has been elected Sheriff in Moose Creek and is happy for her except for her absence during her three-month training period in Georgia. Her concern for her father’s health and being away from Colt and Renegade are the downside of her new job. Returning home, she and others are tracking men who they believe stole precious gems, killing a man and wounding another. When further robberies and death follow, the need to find them is crucial before more people are killed. Since the men seem to be heading toward Moose Creek, Colt is on high alert along with Caitlin and the US Marshals. A twist in the final moments of the case will leave Caitlin fearing that they have not heard the last of the one man who got away. Fast paced action with just the right amount of romance! I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation from the author. (by paytonpuppy)
Marshal is a mid-series book that continues the story of Caitlyn Reed and her K9, Renegade, and leaves an opening for the next book in the series. The real action of solving the mystery didn’t start until approximately the 50% mark, instead it focussed on Caitlin’s developing relationship with Colt Branson, along with her brother’s, Dylan, relationship with her friend, Mackenzie. I would have preferred more of the mystery earlier on instead of the romance aspect of the story, but that’s just my personal taste. The book is definitely well written - as are all Jodi Burnett’s books - the characters certainly well developed, and Caitlin’s interaction with her dog is endearing. I’d recommend this book and series to anyone who enjoys K9 stories and I’m looking forward to the next book. I received and ARC of this novel and this is my genuine opinion.
Action Adventure Thrills and Chills with a touch of Romance all rolled into one fantastic storyline. Caitlyn and Renegade are now a K9 team with the U.S. Marshall's. Colt has been elected the sheriff of Moose Creek. A jewelry robbery escalates into further violence throwing Csitlyn Renegade and Colt into the fray searching for the fugitives. This novel held my attention from the start. Page turning tension builds with each chapter read. I highly recommend this novel and those previous in the series I recieved an E-ARC from the author per my request
Author Jodi Burnett sets the stage for what is to come from the very beginning. Robbery, drugs, and murder all play roles in this story. Adding in a love for animals, family, and romance quickly drew my interest.
Both the Sheriff Colt Branson, and his Deputy, Caitlyn Reed, are running for Sheriff of Moose Creek. The two have a romantic history together and each realizes that the loser of the election will need to pursue other job opportunities. Caitlyn is surprised when she is invited to train as a US Marshal. Even though the training program does not include her beloved K9 partner, the Wyoming US Marshal wants Caitlyn and her dog, Renegade, to become her unit’s K9 team.
Her new job allows Caitlyn to work from home most of the time. The first investigation that she is assigned to work is a based in her area and she once again finds herself working with Colt. How well will they work together now that she is no longer his deputy? Will their feelings for each other get in the way?
The story comes to a partial conclusion…enough that you feel that the romantic aspect is going to work out. However, readers have to wait for next book in this series to find the resolution to the crime.
I received an advance reader’s copy of this book from the author with no promise of a positive review. However, the story kept my attention from the start and I am looking forward to Book 4.
Caitlyn is working on her career and her boyfriend Colt is working on protecting the town. Meanwhile a trio of thieves are working their way across the state and sooner than later Caitlyn will catch the bad guys. So much action and really shows what a hard life ranchers have. So much respect for all they do!
This book was disappointing. At one point I found myself wondering if it were written by the same person who wrote Maverick.
This is the third book in a series and is not at the caliber of Maverick, the previous book, which was an excellent murder mystery. The only negative issue with the previous book was the ridiculous relationship between Caitlyn, our heroine, and Colt, our hero. Caitlyn had been nursing a grudge for over 10 years, unforgiving of a youthful indiscretion for which Colt apologized profusely. In the previous book, Caitlyn was cruel. In this book, their relationship is back on again and her grudge is completely forgotten. While I think it’s about time, in the last two books we had to put up with Caitlyn whining about Colt’s behavior in high school and now, suddenly, it’s no longer mentioned. That’s one way to move on, I suppose.
The book’s timeline is odd. Caitlyn has been asked to join the U.S. Marshals service and must go through marshal training. We know that the U.S. Marshal Training program lasts 17½ weeks. We’re told Caitlyn will graduate in March and it now appears to be early autumn. However, if she were to graduate in March, that would put her headed to Georgia in November…but there is discussion about her coming home for Thanksgiving: “…it’s only a handful of weeks until Thanksgiving,” Colt tells her. I have no idea how long this writer considers a handful, but it’s certainly more than a couple weeks. I think the timing is wrong…and there are too many things left unsettled when she leaves. It’s as if the world of Moose Creek comes to a standstill while she is gone.
Before Caitlyn left for Glynco, Georgia, her father was seriously ill. When she returns, months later, he still hasn’t seen a doctor and has gotten progressively worse. Apparently, Caitlyn is the only one he’ll listen to. Nope…not buying it. He has a wife and two sons, and Colt whom he considers a third son, by his own words. No way would his family allow him to become bedridden, sleep for hours during the day, and sink further downhill. What kind of family would allow such a thing…???
Dylan is ignoring McKenzie when Caitlyn initially leaves for training. He doesn’t return McKenzie’s calls or text messages. He doesn’t initiate contact. Dylan has had McKenzie twisting in the breeze for a year. His mother has a closer relationship with McKenzie than he does. The taciturn Dylan is excused by his mother and by Caitlyn because he is so busy at the ranch and takes on all the chores because they can’t afford to hire anyone to help out. Nope. Not buying it. In previous books, this family has been portrayed as well off, if not rich. The ranch is doing well. They all have time for weekend “headin’ and heelin’” so this whole situation seems off. McKenzie has a job offer back in Florida with a group of people who like and respect her. He is a most disinterested suitor; she needs to hightail it back to Florida and a decent life.
The training period seems to go by without regard to time. At one point Caitlyn is looking forward to the holidays and in the next pages she has one week to go in her training and so it must be March. It’s odd to have left so many loose ends during a period of more than four months. We’re told Caitlyn got her Marshal’s badge “through sheer grit and perseverance,” but we aren’t shown what that means. What happened during the training period? Did she make any friends with whom she’ll maintain contact or perhaps work with? Who knows?
Caitlyn goes back and forth in her decision (which she already made and declared) concerning Colt. Now she thinks she can’t possibly live “with a man whose job put his life in danger all the time.” She thinks, “I can’t handle that. There’s no way.” Yeah? She’s a faithless thing. And a bit hypocritical. She has a very dangerous job and that seems to be just fine. Eventually she sees that their jobs are similarly dangerous but good grief, she is feckless in her relationships.
One of Caitlyn’s most obvious traits is her stubborn adherence to always being right. After she shoots and kills a man for the first time, she is bothered by it, although she compartmentalizes it as is her usual deportment. Not wanting therapy, particularly when she is experiencing flashbacks, is foolish and even stupid. Caitlyn is not stupid. I think the writer is carrying Caitlyn’s stubborn desire for self-sufficiency too far.
There are errors, such as: ==) “They dumped the old man’s car on a gravel road in on the northern border of Wyoming….” The “in” is an unnecessary preposition. ==) “Both horses backed up until the ropes were taught.” No one was teaching the ropes anything; they should have been “taut.” ==) “…he had no money to send them for the drugs, they gave him to get started with.” The comma is superfluous and causes the reader to pause between subject and predicate.
This book was unsatisfactory, particularly after the previous book rocked the murder mystery genre. The three egregiously bad guys are over the top terrible people. Individuals behave out of character. The timeline is off. And the worst insult of all is the cliffhanger ending. The story is not resolved, and it’s a deliberate ploy to get the reader to buy the next book. It is not a difficult thing for a good writer to keep the reader engaged and choosing to read the writer’s next books. Cliffhangers are seriously bad, especially when there is no indication of them in the advert blurbs: this book came with no such warnings. I’ve pretty much had it with this series and with this writer, as well. I feel cheated. Ms. Burnett is capable of much better writing than evidenced in this book which feels rough and unpolished.
I rated the book 2.5 stars and rounded down because of the disappointing features: a cliffhanger ending, out of character behaviors, slipping timeline, dysfunctional relationships. I am disgruntled: the book is bumpy and an uncomfortable read. The writer’s need for a cliffhanger is inexplicable. The story could certainly have been contained within one book. Darn. I loved the previous book; this one could not be more opposite.
Caitlyn Reed is training to become a United States Marshal, and serve with her K9 partner Renegade. Meanwhile, her boyfriend and newly elected sheriff Colt Branson, is investigating a myriad of crimes moving closer to the Wyoming wilderness every time. Marshal is the third book in the Tin Star K9 series, and the best one so far! It’s got suspense, crime, kidnapping, murder, drugs, personal drama and romance. And an courageous Belgian Malinois with lightning-fast reactions! I can't wait for the next book to find out how this story evolves. I received a preview copy of this book which I am voluntarily reviewing.
Wow what a tense and action packed read! Set in the unforgiving winter in the Mountains, Caitlyn and Renegade are tasked with hunting down some nasty characters. When another murder occurs close to home, Colt and the Sherriff's Department join in. What follows is an intense and dangerous hunt for all involved. Caitlyn is wonderful character; a strong, smart and stubborn woman who loves her friends and family dearly. I like that there's more to the story than just the law enforcement parts, Caitlyn has a family that is involved in her life. I absolutely love Renegade.
I love this series!!! This book, like the others, keeps you guessing what's the next scandal and the curves and twists that go along with it! Highly recommended!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It’s #3 in the series and I had read the other two. The main character is Caitlyn and her k9 Renegade, but the other supporting characters are interesting and are all a part of the character, Caitlyn. I liked reading about the other characters. In some books, the authors would go on and on about the supporting characters. In this book I got a good feel about them and felt they were really a part of the book. Caitlyn runs for sheriff against her close friend Colt. She loses and takes it very hard. A blessing comes her way and she was asked to become a “marshal”. They want a k9 marshal and Caitlyn fit the bill. She takes the challenge but has to leave home for a time and especially feels bad about leaving Renegade, her K9. Caitlyn has developed a good friendship with McKenzie who Renegade will be staying with. Coincidentally, McKenzie has eyes for Caitlyn’s brother, Dylan. Caitlyn’s Dad hasn’t been feeling well and won’t see the doctor. Intertwined with all of this are three burglars who stole expensive jewelry and are hiding out in Caitlyn’s and Colt’s turf. You know that they will eventually run into this “gang”. Yes, they do and Colt get shot, twice and Caitlyn and Renegade are injured. Colt getting injured makes Caitlyn realize her real feelings toward Colt and she tells him how she feels. The book doesn’t quite have an ending which caught me off guard and unsettled. I think the author’s way of getting the reader to read the next book. I have favorite authors whose books I read in sequential order and am planning to do so with this one. This book has intrigue, mystery, drama, and love all rolled into on book. Definitely easy reading and very enjoyable.
Caitlyn and Mark are at a crossroads, both want to become Moose Creek Sheriff, but they also want to continue to advance their personal relationship. Some choices will be made by the town's people and by this couple. They'll continue to work together, however, in different circumstances, and will continue to complement the competencies of each other. Renegade, as always, is one of the great stars of the story, he does his job and more! On the family side, the Reeds will have to face some difficult situations and some new romance will actually develop. On the crime scene, there's a lot going on in the area, murders, robberies, kidnapping, and lots of action. It's a great story, that keeps your attention from the beginning to the end, being very much entertaining and easy to read. As a member of the author's ARC team, I downloaded a free copy of this book and this is my honest opinion.
I have been a fan of this author since I read the first ARC that I read, so I went and read all of her prior work. Now I am part of her ARC team and receive them directly from the author. The Tin Star K9 series takes us into the world of Caitlyn Reed and her K9 partner, Renegade. In this book, Caitlyn has been recruited to attend the US Marshals Service Training program that will allow the agency to have resources in Wyoming, where she is from. The story works so well in the series, as the prior book left Caitlyn looking at her next steps in her law enforcement career. There is plenty of action for Caitlyn and her K9, Renegade, along with her childhood friend and love interest, Sheriff Colt Branson, who are now on a task force hunting down fugitives in the Wyoming mountains.
We have a rollercoaster of huge highs in their careers for both Colt and Caitlyn, but these are offset by lows that threaten to pull them apart. Surrounded by danger and with enforced time apart your heart hurts for them as they battle through, focusing on the positives, but some days the blows just keep coming and they are relentless. Although they are both confident when working, we see insecurities about their relationship creep in for both of them as the time apart takes its toll. Renegade is a constant and as always a hero, there is exciting news for Colt and Catie as we finish the book but this is overshadowed by the unfinished thread of the case hanging and taunting them.... I read this on Kindle Unlimited.
Jodi Burnett's Marshal was another one of her thrilling reads! The entertaining page-turning fast-paced plot was filled with intrigue, suspense, and love for her family, her boyfriend, her trusted K9, Renegade, and Whiskey, her horse. Moreover, the reader was taken on a roller-coaster ride of emotions while several armed law enforcement organizations tried to capture the lawless fugitives. Oh no! A twist in the action came into play!!! I didn't see it coming. Overall, I enjoyed reading the narrative. I was given an advanced copy of this book. I am voluntarily giving my honest review.
I enjoyed book 3, "Marshal" of the "Tin Star K9" series. In this story, Caitlyn, Renegade, and Colt become embroiled in a manhunt being conducted by U.S. Marshals. The story showed development in the characters. There were many surprising twists and turns. There was plenty of action. The epilogue let us know that the story has not ended; therefore, I'm looking forward to the next book in the series. Joyce Oben's narration was entertaining. I was given a free copy of the audiobook, and I have voluntarily posted this review.
This is a full speed ahead story! Lots of action and human (and dog) interests. Caitlyn may have found a new purpose in life, well not really new, just re-focused, as a US Marshal. All our old friends from previous stories are there, and a few new ones too. This will be a great series! So many story lines to pursue. I know Jodi has at least one more book planned to close this story thread, but surely she won’t stop there! Can’t wait for the next one!
Caitlyn is now a Deputy US Marshal. Her and Colt are chasing 3 suspects in a bank and jewelry store robbery, who have added multiple murders to their crime spree. Renegade has been wounded as well as both of them. A woman they have known all their lives is one of the victims. They are growing closer every day. What will happen? Find out by reading this great book. Highly recommended,
This latest in the Tin Star K9 series is outstanding! Caitlyn and her canine partner Renegade have once again proven to be heroes in solving a huge mystery. Caitlyn has just become a Federal Marshal and proves her worth beyond any doubt. How they team up to put an end to the criminals is an exciting and adventurous story. I highly recommend this book.
Marshal (Tin Star K9 Series Book 3) by Jodi Burnett is an amazing story to read. This is book number three in this amazing series that I have loved reading very much. I highly recommend this story to everyone who loves reading about mystery, thriller and suspense.
I read a complimentary Advanced Reader Copy of this book & am voluntarily leaving an honest and unbiased review.
Caitlin and Renegade face some big challenges but it is good not alone. Sheriff Colt is also part of the task force to help with these challenges of vermin. Wyoming can be a big place to hide to hide too. This author provides us with plenty of good suspense and thrills. Turn the pages to see if they face the challenges along with some heat.
What a time Caitlyn and Renegade make. Managing to figure out that unrelated crimes are in fact related. Going from the city to the mountains to catch the outlaws. Great story. I can't wait to read more about their adventures. Now that they are part of the US Marshall service where will they go next?
Wow! That was an amazing adventure with Caitlin, Renegade and the whole other cast of characters!! This was a could not put it down book. So emotional, lots of drama and lots of surprises. Jodi you are an exceptional author and I can't wait for your next Tin Star K9 book.
The 2nd half of this book had you wanting to find out what is going on with Caities dads health, will Dylan keep McKenzie from moving back to Florida, will Cathie & Colt get engaged, and will they catch the 3 criminals who have ruined so many lives. Enjoyed learning about the Marshal Service in first part of book. Can’t wait to read the next book in this series.
Book three of the Tin Star K9 series is an amazing, exciting and interestingly great read! The heroine in these stories is a great cowgirl and deputy. She just graduated from US Marshal academy! Just as soon as she gets home she's called into action! Now I can't wait to start reading the next book in this series!!
