Free Snacks : Around and around it goes, where the ferris wheel stops, nobody knows! Moderation in all things, especially the free bags of peanuts at the Glutton for Fun Carnival in Fog Creek, Alabama. ---------------------------------------------------------- His Review : I'm a sucker for a good carnival story and this one delivered. Sinister carnies, gruesome scenes, childhood friendship and crushes, and a ferris wheel that you won't soon forget. 🥜🥜🥜🥜🥜/5 bags of free nuts ************************************* Chairwolf : What do you get when you mix Raymour and Flanigan with a dash of full moon, poor drunken teenage decision making and some #teamjacob? You get some freaking Chairwolf, that's what! --------‐------------------------------------------------ I've seen Killer Sofa, which should have been called Killer Recliner. This story feels like it is in the same vein. An unapologetic, fun reading experience. I loved the nod to The Wolfman himself, Lon Chaney. 🪑🪑🪑🪑/5 Chairwolves of the board ************************************* Vengeance is Mine : Bullies, workplace violence, dirt weed, Ouija boards, the woods, and murder. Thomas Gloom packs a lot into this short story! --------------------------------------------------------- His Review : Okay, I don't know if I was supposed to sympathize with Jim as much as I did but damn. Dude was pushed to his breaking point and just wanted some nice, innocent revenge. The first part of this story was pretty straight forward. I loved the Ouija board aspect. The second part caught me off guard in the best possible way. Moral of the story, men are terrible. Even I can admit that! 🐟🐟🐟🐟.5/5 ruined tuna fish sammies ************************************* Breach : F*** cancer. Sometimes the greatest horror is harm coming to our loved ones. That helpless feeling of having a person you care so deeply for ripped away from you. ---------------------------------------------------- This story made me so sad. Which is not a bad thing. I love when stories elicit an emotional response from me because that is rare. I loved the twist at the end too! 🦨🐇🐿🦫🦉/5 outdoor critters ************************************* This quick collection had a fun range of stories, from silly to incredibly sad. Overall I'm giving this one 🫀🫀🫀🫀🫀/5 beating hearts
Short stories are a great way to get to know an author, especially one that writes horror. They're snapshots into the author's mind, where ideas are born and fester into the horrible and grotesque creations that we, as lovers of horror, crave and consume.
Gloom crafts his stories with great care, and the title of this collection is no coincidence. There are equal parts horror and heart in each of these tales, and the love for the genre that fuels this author's passion is clear. The horror will haunt you and leave you chilled, and you'll find solace in the heartfelt moments before the next story begins. These stories are inventive, original, and at times downright gruesome.
I was fortunate to receive an early copy of this collection, and even more fortunate to consider the author a friend.
This collection will be released on September 15th, and you should be on the lookout for it.
Welcome to volume two of “Stories with Horror & Heart”. In this volume, we're presented with four more short stories from the mind of Thomas Gloom. These stories range from simply frightening to almost whimsical, never allowing you to relax, even once you've finished them.
As stated in one of the author’s notes, this volume could well be a trove of rejected stories. However, the truth is that these stories just got their second chance at life here, and they're probably better for it.
“The four of us stared up at the banner strung above the entrance which read: GLUTTON FOR FUN CARNIVAL. Now, I should’ve known something was up with a name like that. I do remember thinking it was a bit strange, but I was at a carnival with a girl, and nothing was going to distract me from savoring every moment of it.”
“Free Snacks”, the first story, was written for an anthology and wasn’t chosen. While it would definitely have a place there, it was good that it wasn't included so we're able to have it opening the festivities here. It’s about a carnival and the dark and terrible things that took place inside its grounds. It’s mystery-filled, and features some very graphic scenes – Ferris Wheel anyone? - that will make your head and stomach turn. The second one, “Chairwolf”, could have been fun if not for its grisly finale. A Christmas tradition centered on telling scary tales around a campfire takes a dark turn when it all gets too real. The next one was, for me, the most haunting of the four. “Vengeance is Mine” is about a guy that finds the solution for his life's problems after dreaming about a woman in a forest. What follows is a revenge story of ghostly possessions and second chances, which will make you rethink your actions. The last story is perhaps the most personal of all four. “Breach” deals with the loss of loved ones, disease, and despair. Thomas Gloom does a great job creating a horror story around these themes while managing to hold on to the human connection. While “Vengeance is Mine” was probably the most terrifying one, “Breach” was the one with the most heart, and the one that scared me the most because of what it deals with.
“And that’s why I’m standing outside my uncle’s house with two jugs of gasoline and a box of matches. This is about carrying on my aunt’s honor… and maybe doing what she wasn’t capable of. I’m here to end this thing. End it for Aunt Mindy. End it for Uncle Jay. And if I’m being honest, I’m here to end it for me.”
To put it plainly, Mr. Gloom has done it again. He wove another batch of amazing stories that will be sure to stay with you for a long time, regardless of how much you try to escape them. This is a collection you definitely must read and, using the author's own words, remember to leave a light on.
This is a fantastically-captivating set of shorts with just enough spookiness and creep factor to make you want to keep the lights on at night! If you want to scare yourself, in the best of ways, this collection of stories is not to be missed.
*I received a complimentary ARC of this book in order to read and provide a voluntary, unbiased and honest review, should I choose to do so.
