When my husband’s mistress was found brutally murdered, I was the one imprisoned for the crime.
I was willing to do whatever it took to prove my innocence. When Dr. Evelyn Powell showed up on visiting day, I was shocked to learn she was my husband’s new fiancé. I befriended her in hopes of finding answers to my questions.
Was my husband behind the brutal slaying? If I wanted to regain my freedom, I had to figure out a way to convince Evelyn to betray the man she loved and search for the evidence that would prove my innocence. After all, if I was right about my husband, she could be his next victim.
A psychological thriller with a twist you’ll have to read to believe.

MY OPINNI
After two absolute stinkers in the past week, I can't decide is this book was really 3 stars on merit alone, OR if I still haven't recovered from the stinkers, so anything else seems brilliant in comparison. Either way, as it stands today, this is three stars.
There's lots of things that should've bothered me about this book. Namely all the women were pick mes risking it all for a man who couldn't stay faithful if his life depended on it. Dude was out here swanging his d*** at anyone who looked his way. Although it was obvious Nathan was incapable of monogamy, he had multiple women throwing all self-respect out the window for him. Pick mes are the bane of my existence. Free my ladies from the bare minimum PLS.
It's hard to explain why the pick meishas didn't drive me crazy. Maybe because the author spent time explaining WHY Liz lost her plot for some D... her childhood, Nathan's manipulative ways, etc. She was in a whole ass marriage with a man who had manipulated her from day 1. So this wasn't your typical single pick me... This is a woman who was begging her own husband to pick her, which happens on the daily. The part when he declined her call on his b day to be with the side boo... I'd have strangle him in his sleep. Liz's inner thoughts and battles with her relationship made me sad. She was really going through it.
However, I found Liz's character to be inconsistent. In prison she's kinda a tight-ass, miss goody goody who missed her weekly manicures and cardigan sets. But during her visits, girl becomes the queen of the F-bombs and seems more on par with her inmates. Also, no matter how you cut it, she was a psycho. I won't give it away. But yeah, she needs psychological help. Her thoughts escalated to a place that's not chill, no matter what you're going through. It's one thing to just fantasize... it's another to
Overall, the writing quality was just fine. She used "I almost choked on my tongue" one too many times, but whatever. Not worse than what I've been enduring lately.
3 stars because it's Honda Civic reliable but the ending was easy to figure out and everything is practically given away for the next book, so I can't see how #2 would surprise me. It was a quick read; the appropriate amount of pages for the storyline.
PROS AND CONS
Pros: Nothing irked the crap out of me, quick read, normal writing quality, good pacing Cons: Ending was "WELL DUH", character personalities all over the place
She's in prison ... for life. She was found guilty of killing the pregnant woman who was having an affair with her husband. She proclaims her innocence and knowing that she didn't kill the woman .. she suspects that her husband killed the girlfriend and then framed his wife.
She's feeling pretty down until she receives a visitor ... a woman, therapist, that says she's engaged to her husband and she wants her to sign divorce papers so they can begin their life together.
Her first thought is that her husband is a killer, who thought nothing of killing his pregnant girlfriend. Is his new fiancee to be his next victim?
The story is told from the wife's point of view, from her memories to the letters she exchanges with the therapist. It's suspenseful from start to finish. There are many questions.. the most important ... did she kill the woman .. or was it her husband? It's slow, but manages to be compelling at the same time. The ending was quite a surprise!
Many thanks to the author / Victory Editing Netgalley Co-Op / Netgalley for the digital copy of this psychological drama. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
Finished in a day- this book starts with the arrest of Liz for the murder of her husband's mistress. And I was obsessed. The book begins a year after Liz's arrest and trial. She has an expected visitor - Dr. Evelyn Powell. Her husband's fiancée. Desperate for Liz to sign the divorce papers, Evelyn agrees to listen to Liz's story. Liz is desperate for someone to help her expose Nathan for who he really is - Alison's killer. Drama. Intrigue. Mystery. Obsession. Excellent read.
First let me say, I read this entire book in 1 sitting. It absolutely has all the makings of an addictive thriller. I will warn - IT ENDS ON A CLIFFHANGER. I was NOT expecting this to be the start of a series. I was expecting to have my ending all wrapped up with a pretty bow. This is the ONLY reason I did give this book 5 stars! That being said : ⭐️ This was a WONDERFUL read! I love reading about a woman scorned and going on the journey of revenge and enlightenment with her. The twist was absolutely there, and I had figured it out, but I will be honest and say it’s very rare that I DONT figure out a twist before it comes. I read a lot of thrillers and I’ve started to be able to guess the twist before the ending. I will say some of the details of the twist did surprise me! I highly recommend this title to anyone who enjoys ✨psychological thrillers ✨plot twists ✨Unreliable narrators. The background of the prison did have a bit to do with the story, but a large portion was flashbacks and inner monologues. Don’t be deterred by the prison setting if that isn’t usually your type of book.
⭐️ Thank you to Next Step Pr & the author for providing me with an advanced copy for review! I can’t wait to read the next segment in this story!
Note: I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review. Note 2: This is part of a duet. The first book is My Husband's Fiancee. The second is My Wife's Secrets. Please read in order.
Trigger Warnings: fertility issues, infidelity, murder, death of an infant, mental health issues, marriage issues, emotional abuse, child abuse.
This book was definitely on the dysfunctional side, as I started reading it. Captivating, thrilling and riveting, I was rooted to my spot for hours, trying to figure out how the story would go and end.
Liz, or Elizabeth as she is known, has been recently sent to prison, following suspicions of murder regarding her husband's mistress, for a life sentence.
She soon meets her husband's fiancee, despite the fact that they are not divorced yet, and tries to explain her side of the story to her.
Secrets unravel, trauma bleeds into her everyday prison life moreso, confusion and disorientation enter her brain all the time - you would think she had a medical condition of sorts, and she is even more withdrawn as time passes and more parts of her side of the story fall through.
But not everything is what it seems - especially when she has to deal with all the people from her past, who are also, begrudgingly part of her future as well.
More clues follow, sudden alternative theories make up, and Liz may be on the track to getting her freedom.
But someone close to her doesn't want to let that happen - will Liz make it out or not - only time and the next book will tell.
As I said, this book was riveting, captivating, and a rollercoaster ride for me, as I experienced the settings of daily prison life, various inmates' stories and strange happenings inside the prison through Liz's eyes. As well as her piecing clues together to figure out who did kill the mistress and why - it's truly a fun, thrilling, and cannot stop reading rush that continues well past the last page.
Thanks to Wendy Owen and her brilliant writing, for helping me get back to the psychological thriller world. Truly, I feel as if I can breathe again with such an excellent read in my hands.
I loved, loved this book and cannot wait for the next book: My Wife's Secrets coming February 24th 2022, to finally figure out if Liz will make it out of her life sentence and catch the real killer too.
I couldn't put it down...not for anything yesterday! I finished it in a day and was so happy to be reading it. Even the World Series and my hubby telling me to "watch this play" or "that wasn't a strike" couldn't get me to look up from this book. This is my first book from Wendy Owens and I am beyond thrilled at her level of writing and how engaged I was with the characters and the entire story line. I felt like I was Liz...and for an author to be able to transform the reader into the main character is exceptional! I highly & enthusiastically recommend this thriller to everyone I know and can't wait for the next book so I can find out what happens! 😉⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️📖👍🏼
Sometimes I forget how much I like psychological thrillers until I read a book like this. I can't recommend this book enough, it is fantastic. The characters in this story played their part so well. Oh and I loved Liz's cell mates Marla and Ruby. They were a hoot. And when you have a mother and sister like Liz had who needs enemies. I can't say too much because I don't want to spoil anything but definitely read this. You will love it.
5 ADDICTIVE STARS!! I am so addicted....I need the next book. This kept me on my toes all the way through. There were so many twists and turns I could not put it down. I need the next book....like right now.
I didn’t care a whit for any of the characters in this book, ok, except maybe Samantha snd she was only a bit player. Lizzy, from whose point of view the story unfolds, was as conniving and devious as any of them and as for Nathan - ugh!!! They deserved each other! The story was very well put together in fairness and the ending whilst not definitive was a good twist.
Thank you to NetGalley and Victory Editing for the ARC.
Um hi excuse me!!! Is this going to be a series because what in the h-e double hockey sticks was that ending? I read this book in one sitting because I just couldn’t put it down until I knew how it ended. The truth about what happened is so obvious but the thought didn’t even cross my mind whatsoever. There were so many secrets and twists that left me speechless.
I absolutely loved this book and I NEED to know what happens next.
This was the first book from Wendy Owen that I’ve read and what an introduction! My Husband’s Fiancée was a fantastic psychological thriller that grabbed my attention from the beginning and kept this reader guessing and absorbed to the very last page. The story is told mainly in flashbacks which is usually something I dislike in a book but in this case it’s necessary to the storyline. Surprisingly the heroine, Liz, isn’t a likeable character, or at least to me she isn’t, so I didn’t feel any sympathy for the predicament she found herself in but the twists and turns of the plot itself had me engrossed as I tried to figure out whether or not could Liz really be guilty of murder? It does end on a cliffhanger but not one where I was left screaming at my kindle,. It’s more of a ‘to be continued’ and I, for one, can’t wait to see what happens next.
One last thing I have to say about this book is that a huge part of me is hoping that one day it ends up being made into a TV series. I honestly think it would make for gripping television and that’s coming from someone who hates TV adaptations of books and doesn’t generally watch them on principle!
Thank you to Net Galley, The Next Step PR & Wendy Owens for the opportunity to read an arc of My Husband’s Fiancée
This is my first Wendy Owen’s book and what a great reads! I had idea this ended in a cliffhanger and cannot wait to read the next book and see how this story wraps up!
This book will take you on twists and turns that are unexpected. When you think you may have it figure out then a twists comes along and takes you in a new direction. The female leader makes you go hmmmmm, but you get an understanding of why she acts/says what she does. The support cast of characters are very interesting also.
Great read that will keep you guessing. I requested an arc and I’m leaving my honest review.
Wow! This was my first book by Wendy and won’t be my last.
Liz’s story will definitely take you on a journey of who done it. You get a glimpse of everything that led up to her being put in prison. This story will keep you pulled in until the very end. The plot twist will definitely leave your mind blown!
This is the first time I've read a book by Wendy Owens. I normally read romance, but wanted to try branching out to read what I watch on television. It was well written, hard to put down. I wanted to find out what happened. I can't say there was a character that I liked, but it was character strong. I had it figured out before the reveal, but was surprised how it was revealed and that this will be continued. There was a satisfying enough ending if choosing not to continue with the series, but I'm looking forward to the next book.
I spent the whole book trying to decide if Liz was truly innocent or if she was crazy and a killer. There are so many layers to this story that it will have you spinning. I don't want to give any spoilers but none of the characters are what they seem. The last few chapters were intense. And that ending left me reeling. The clues were there but it still was surprising. I honestly want a few more chapters which is how you know a book has gotten to you.
This was such a fun fast read! Liz is in prison for killing her husbands lover, the death which she might have plotted but which she suspects her husband committed. While we realize who the killer is, it’s a great read to figure out why and how it was done. The ending seemed rushed, setting it up for a possible sequel, which of course, I would love to read.
I’m very rarely lost for words, but this book has left me gobsmacked, struggling for words….
The storyline had so many twist and turns. I ended up flipping page after page, needing to know what happened next. Even when I wasn’t reading, I was thinking about this book. It was exciting! I love a good thriller.
This was the first book I’ve read by this author, and looking forward to reading more.
One Star? Yes really, right up to the end I thought it was a good book but what happened there? It just stopped, no resolution to any of the shit that made the book really good up to that point in time.
Seriously, the whole book is spent building the tension between the wife and her husband's fiancé and that just disappears into the ether, poof! just like that.
What I don't get about the author is why? They were on to a winner right up to the point they abandoned it. So the DNA was from some random (never mentioned before) nut job, and THAT was the resolution?? Jeez, you could have at least have that unfold into the random nut job in fact being the fiancé?
This finished up way better than I expected! Didn’t see the twist coming and it left me on a cliffhanger, so now I’ll probably have to read the next book in the series. Did have some content that I had to skip, but it wasn’t that much and the overall plot was good.
I'm a romance/fantasy reader, but every now and then I crave a thriller.
My Husband's Fiancee is more of psychological thriller and not so much action packed. It's one of those books where you ask questions and seek the truth. The main heroine was pretty likable to me. Towards the end I had a suspect, and was proven right. But my, how the tabels have turned. What a cliff!
My Wife's Secrets is the second book in the series (coming February 2022). The blurb hints husbands POV and I've already fallen for the blurb. Can't wait.
I’m the outlier on this book. If it were possible to rate it zero stars I would.
After listening to Liz whine and babble for almost two hundred pages the book comes to an abrupt halt. A new person is introduced by name only and she’s the possible killer. “See my next book”.
Are you kidding me? This book was terrible and filled with grammatical errors. Very poorly developed plot. I find myself wondering just who has rated this book so highly in the app—completely unbelievable. This one goes out to the Little Library donation pile.
There are a lot of trigger warnings in this book related to infertility, miscarriage, murder and mental illness. Take care of yourself.
This was a different take on a psychological thriller and I absolutely ate it up! Liz is unstable, her husband's infidelity makes him unlikable and his new fiancée seems a little off putting.
Learning about Liz's past and her current situation was sad to read about. You can tell she needs help with the trauma she ensured during her marriage and childhood, and she's also a little unreliable, too. It's hard to tell if she's telling the truth or not.
Evelyn was fishy from the start, but it was hard not to feel sorry for her as well. And Steven's whole character is hard to read about since he is a constant cheater and doesn't support Liz through anything.
I think this book is a great twisty thriller where you are able to really get to know the main character through the good and the bad.
Liz is in prison after being convicted of killing her husband’s mistress. A year after being there her husband’s new fiancé comes to visit with a request she sign divorce papers. Liz agrees only if the fiancé will listen to her side of the story and her theory that her husband actually framed her for the murder. Liz’s ideas start to shift as she discovers more about herself and her husband and as new evidence is discovered.
Overall, this was an enjoyable mystery. Nice & short which was refreshing so I didn’t feel like I was wading through fluff forever to finally get to the reveal. I’m annoyed by the cliffhanger-ish ending after the killer was revealed but it seems fairly predictable where the story will go from here so I don’t think I’ll bother with the next book.
This book grabs you from the get go. I was on the edge of my seat the whole book. I could NOT for the life of me figure the "Who Done It, I was STUMPED! The thrill and suspense of this book keeps you going. I thought the Author did a marvelous job building up and the plop was absolutely mysterious as it was entertaining. I caught myself holding my breath many times through out this book. An absolute great psychological thriller I couldn't put down!
I’m reviewing this and its sequel, My Wife’s Secrets. So…mediocre but at least it was fast-paced so it went quick. It held my interest enough to finish. I had no intention of reading the second book, but the first one, exasperatingly, wasn’t a stand-alone. If I had known, I wouldn’t have read that, either.
In My Husband’s Fiancée, Liz Foster, from whose pov it’s told, is in jail for her husband’s mistress’s murder. (And that of their unborn child,) It wasn’t clear to me how long she’d been in jail, but it struck me as a couple of months. One day, she has a visitor named Evelyn Powell who introduces herself as Liz’s husband’s (Nathan’s) fiancée. She’s there because she’s attempting to get Liz to sign the divorce papers. She agrees, but only if Evelyn listens to her side of the story. This happens over the next couple of months, during their visits.
Evelyn is totally shady. Liz seems to think so too, but decides to be friends. After Liz’s confession, Evelyn admits that she murdered the mistress. Fortunately for Liz, new DNA evidence is found on the murder weapon and is enough to exonerate her.
The second book is from Nathan’s pov and he and Evelyn are now married with a child. In this novel, Nathan starts getting weird vibes from Evelyn and begins uncovering her secrets. Nathan is totally boneheaded because these secrets are GLARING! (He couldn’t tell that she was wearing a fake baby bump??) Liz, against whom Evelyn and Nathan have a restraining order, tries to warn him but he doesn’t listen.
The ending is disappointingly predictable. The suspense factor is really good, but the story doesn’t seem plausible even if you suspend your disbelief. Plenty of pot holes. Unexplained circumstances. Bonehead Nathan. These add up to 3 stars.
I thought this book was really good, it kept me hooked till the end. The writer is very good with storyline, characters, and pace. The ending was so disappointing, it felt as if it was rushed to just get the book out. It wasn't even a true ending, as it left too many open holes in the story. If she wrote a sequel I would definitely read it. As it is, I cannot recommend this book as it only feels like a partial story.
