Définir mon amour pour cette saga est complexe tellement je l’aime.

C’est vraiment ma révélation de 2024 et je suis ravie de me dire que je vais la terminer en 2025 (un peu déprimée à l’idée de dire au revoir aux personnages néanmoins)

On est sur un troisième tome avec la première guerre mondiale qui commence à être bien entamée et on ressent tellement l’ambiance que cela devait être pour les habitants restant à Londres.

Entre la nouvelle au début du roman qui me fait tellement aimer le personnage de Sam et qui rajoute un côté sombre à Lily : j’adore. Et la suite n’en ai qu’excellente.

Pourtant je ne suis pas friande des enquêtes, mais pour cette found family : j’y fonce sans détour. Je m’inquiète pour eux, ils font fondre mon cœur ou me font rire. Leurs liens à tous est tellement beau

Je trouve Lily tellement forte, j’aime sa relation avec Strangford qui est si belle, si pure et tellement dans le confiance.

J’ai peur du dernier tome. J’ai peur de cette guerre. J’ai peur de perdre des personnages qui me sont chers.

J’aime tellement cette saga, je vous la recommande chaudement et je ne peux que vous conseiller de tenter en audio qui sont fantastiques

Tome après tome, je suis conquise. Ce n'est plus une surprise, mais cette lecture parvient toujours à m'accrocher. J'adore l'ambiance, l'écriture, je suis captivée par l'évolution de l'intrigue et des personnages. Et je vis à fond les drames et les passions qui se nouent entre les pages. C'est palpitant, vraiment.

Dans ce troisième tome, la guerre sévit sur le continent. Les résidents du Refuge sont séparés. Lors d'un séjour à la campagne, Lily et Strangford découvrent le corps d'un homme assassiné. La police soupçonne le couple d'avoir orchestré ce crime, mais les fiancés vont déjouer la surveillance des forces de l'ordre pour mener leur propre enquête. Toutefois la grande question du livre concerne le mariage : aura-t-il finalement lieu ?

Si la politique extérieure était plus présente dans les tomes précédents, cette fois on se concentre sur nos chers Charismatiques. On se recentre sur la famille, on mesure les sacrifices et on réfléchit sur l'avenir. Alors que des jeunes gens sont enrôlés par milliers pour rejoindre les troupes dans les Flandres, Lily et Strangford ne conçoivent pas d'être confinés dans leur salon. Ils veulent prendre part activement au conflit, même si les visions de la jeune femme n'augurent rien de bon. Oooh j'ai tellement hâte de connaître le dénouement ! J'espère qu'on retrouvera Sam également. En attendant, j'ai été très touchée par ce tome et par sa tendresse - Lily va recroiser son jeune frère et se demander quelle place lui accorder dans sa vie, Strangford va également se rapprocher de ses proches et avouer ses tourments les plus sombres. Leur relation gagne en puissance. Il y a un tel amour entre eux ! Même lady Strangford va nous apparaître plus humaine, plus attachante. La suite nous réserve un rodéo émotionnel, tant pis, je meurs d'envie d'y replonger.

Je me plie au rythme de l'adaptation audio chez Voolume (un livre par mois) et je suis enchantée. L'interprétation est élégante, Adélaïde Poulard est une fantastique narratrice, je n'envisage plus la lecture autrement. Elle apporte un son mélancolique mais aussi romantique à l'atmosphère. C'est une vraie réussite. Enfin moi je suis sous le charme. ♥︎ Et ce tome 3 est excellent !

Un tome 3 très réussi de mon côté ! Si j'avais moins accroché avec le 2, celui-ci m'a réconciliée avec la série 😊.
Il reste dans l'esprit des deux précédents : un rythme assez lent, une immersion dans les pensées de Lily mais j'ai plus accroché avec l'intrigue ! On monte en puissance progressivement, ce qui évite l'effet wahou suivi de 200 pages où il se passe rien. L'enquête est logique et ne se perd pas dans des méandres inutiles, et j'ai trouvé la résolution très intrigante.

J'ai trouvé la relation entre Lily et Strangford extrêmement douce et tendre, toute en pudeur dissimulée ! Vraiment trop mignon 🥺

This is a spectacular installment in the London Charismatics series! This volume includes the novella 2.5 A Wrath of Sparrows and book 3 Bridge of Ash. This series really shouldn’t be read out of order, and I definitely wouldn’t skip the novella.

In A Wrath of Sparrows, London i in autumn as WWI unfolds. Lily and the gang are grieving Ash, and Lily and Sam get tangled up with figures from his past as she learns more about her powers and potential. Bridge of Ash takes place in the month before Lily and Strangford’s December wedding. Instead of enjoying the holiday season, they find themselves pulled into a murder investigation.

This was another great installment in the series. I loved having the two stories in one book. The novella focused on Sam, which I appreciated, while Strangford played a prominent role in the full-length novel. The murder mystery elements were exciting and at times intense. I was very worried about how this book would end, afraid it would leave me on a stressful cliffhanger. And while there are still plenty of unresolved issues, it ends with a bit of a happy for now.

I loved this book/novella combo, and I’m so excited to read the conclusion book 4, What the Ravens Sing.

This installment in the Charismatics series takes a serious turn, but that’s endemic to the nature of the historical period. England has just entered into World War II and the long line of peace in the empire is coming to an end. This loss of innocence is plunging the entire continent into chaos, and someone is profiting from it.

Lily and Strangford should be worrying over wedding venues and champagne choices, but instead they find themselves embroiled in a murder investigation, with a killer who may be gifted as they are and an investigator bent on pointing the finger in their direction. How can they prove that the culprit isn’t something easily understood.

I am absolutely here for the dark turn we’re taking with Lily this time around. England is changing irrecoverably and she is at the edge of it with her precognition. Her talent is increasing and she’s not always sure how she should use it. Watching her lean in and at the same time away from it is riveting. The beautiful relationship she has with Strangford is never easy, but oh so satisfying. I love the conjecture about the gifts of saints and legends and how the truth is that they were also gifted with strange abilities. And watching Lily deal with her grief over her mentor is heart wrenching.

This series is un-put-down-able! Grab the first one today!

J’ai bien aimé ma lecture qui m’a fait penser à une enquête style Agatha Christie mais sans le huis clos total. L’ambiance est toujours une réussite ! Certains personnages manquent au récit mais on se concentré sur Strangford et Lily et j’aime toujours autant leur relation douce et respectueuse. On a un peu de la guerre qui bouleverse le récit mais ça reste assez léger en soit, contrairement à ce qui s’annonce dans la suite et fin. J’aime que des personnages et des enjeux réels soient intégrés à ce récit fictif. On en apprend plus sur les pouvoirs de notre protagoniste et j’ai aimé son évolution. Je pense que la suite nous promet une belle aventure en espérant qu’il n’y ai pas trop de larmes. Je file je vais lire de ce pas le dernier tome !

J'avais acheté le tome trois à sa sortie, mais j'ai mis un moment avant de me décider à le lire. J'avoue avoir une relation assez étrange avec la saga qui n'a pas été à la hauteur de mes espérances jusqu'à présent, mais la curiosité est toujours restée, sans compter que je me suis attachée aux personnages. Difficile donc de les laisser de côté sans savoir ce qui allait leur arriver. Et puis ce tome trois est arrivé. Je ne pensais pas l'aimer autant. J'ai peut-être fait mon deuil de mes attentes pour me focaliser sur l'intrigue que Jacquelyn Benson avait en tête, et me laisser porter. Et cela a clairement porté ses fruits.

Commencer par la nouvelle À toute volée était vraiment une très bonne chose. J'approuve à 100% l 'initiative des éditions Rivka pour cela. Non seulement cela nous permet de mieux comprendre certains éléments du chaos du coeur, mais il y a également un rythme et de l'action qui offrent une très bonne mise en bouche. Et surtout, la nouvelle met fin à une intrigue, qui je pense n'aurait pas eu sa place dans les romans mais qui méritait tout de même une conclusion.

Le début du Chaos du coeur a été un peu compliquée par contre. Un peu comme un soufflet qui retombe. Nous passons d'une nouvelle pleine d'action et d'émotions intenses, à plusieurs chapitres où il ne se passe pas grand-chose mis à part la description de scènes du quotidien. J'avoue que cela m'a un petit peu refroidi, même si voir Lily évoluer dans sa belle-famille et essayer de trouver une stabilité n'avaient rien de déplaisant. C'est juste que le manque d'action et les états d'âmes ont un peu plombés l'ambiance dans laquelle j'étais. Et puis l'élément déclencheur se produit. Bien plus rapidement que ce que j'aurais cru, entraînant avec lui pas mal de désagréments (et c'est un euphémisme).

Comme dans le second tome, une course contre la montre et une enquête se mettent en place. Et j'adore cela. Alors oui, en commençant le Lys de feu je m'attendais à une épopée très fantastique où les pouvoirs des Charismatiques seraient au centre de toute et que notre bande de héros formerait une équipe un peu à la X-men. Il n'en est rien. Comme je l'ai dit au début de ma chronique, j'ai retiré cette idée de mon esprit, et je vois maintenant plus la saga comme une aventure tirant plus sur le policier que l'imaginaire. Les pouvoirs ont toujours leur importance, mais ils sont plus un outil à l'intrigue que faisant partie d'elle. Je me suis donc focalisée sur le meurtre qui est commis, et surtout qui était le coupable. Et impossible de lâcher le roman à partir de là.

Les enjeux sont assez énormes qui plus est. Au fil de ma lecture j'ai bien compris que la Première Guerre Mondiale qui venait d'éclater n'était pas qu'un élément de fond. Tout est lié, et nous avions pu nous en rendre compte dans le tome deux d'ailleurs. Je ne suis pas fan de la guerre, mais ici, j'ai trouvé que l'auteur mettait très bien en scène le tout. Les différents points de vue, la politique, les stratégies, le peuple qui est obligé de s'enrôler, qui subit des attaques gratuites, ces hommes qui "fantasment" la guerre et les autres qui au contraire savent ce qu'ils vont perdre. Je ne sais pas si on peut dire que c'est réaliste, mais on y croit vraiment.

Lily doit aussi faire face à son pouvoir. Elle le maîtrise beaucoup mieux et l'exploite aussi tout au long du roman, mais elle a aussi découvert la partie sombre de son don. Là encore, je trouve intéressant qu'à chaque fois, les capacités des Charismatiques aient un côté sombre. Anthony est obligé de se couper du contact des autres, Sam sait que certains animaux demanderont plus qu'ils ne donneront, Garner ne peut pas sauver tout le monde même s'il sait ce qui ne va pas, et Lily peut à tout moment basculer du côté obscur. le fait de ne pas idéaliser les pouvoirs qui sont mis en avant rend nos héros plus humains. Et ici avec Lily, on a presque l'impression que son don est vivant, qu'il a sa propre volonté. le combat mené n'en est que plus intéressant.

La romance a aussi bien entendu une grande place dans le Chaos du coeur. Anthony et Lily sont sur le point de se marier, il aurait été difficile d'en être autrement. Bien qu'elle n'étouffe pas du tout l'intrigue principale, elle est bien mise en avant. Et je trouve que l'équilibre est vraiment très bien. Déjà Lilly a un allié sur lequel elle se repose, et un partenaire qu'elle ne laisse pas de côté. On voit aussi que le couple fait des compromis et que chacun essaye de comprendre l'autre. Et j'adore voir ce genre de relation. On peut aussi voir que Lily prend conscience qu'elle a des gens sur lesquels elle peut compter (autre qu'Anthony bien sûr). Pas encore très évident pour elle, mais un sacré pas est fait dans ce tome trois. Et j'espère vraiment que le dernier tome utilisera cela au maximum.

La fin du tome est une montée pure d'adrénaline comme on les aime, avec une conclusion que j'ai particulièrement aimée. La touche d'émotions finale ne gâche rien non plus, bien au contraire, et vu le résumé du dernier tome, je pense qu'il faut absorber un maximum de bonnes ondes. En tout cas, très contente de m'être réconciliée avec le lys de feu. Et j'ai hâte de découvrir la conclusion imaginée par Jacquelyn Benson.

Benson's third installment in the London Charismatics series is a emotional and powerful. Still reeling from the events of The Shadow of Water, the characters have been separated by physically by the war and emotionally as they each deal with their grief.

The characters:
Lily continues to push the boundaries and struggle with the changes to her powers. While she has made great strides in accepting her powers, her new abilities and the power they have seems are a new challenge for her. I love Lily as an FMC because she always rises to the challenge and this is no exception. While she is might be struggling, she is self-assured and strong. I loved her continued romance with Strangford. The romance between them is one built on trust, mutual respect, and love. I missed the presence of a specific character (Sam), but hope to see him return in the conclusion.

The plot:
I loved the way Benson took the real world of World War I and infused that into the changing London As It Never War setting. It added a sense of urgency to the plot to figure out who this seedy world of spies, espionage, murder, and political intrigue!

A solid 4.5 / 5 stars! This third instalment of The Charismatics starts with a slow-burning lit fuse and takes off with bang. Benson continues to expand her world, currently in the grips of the Great War. London is weary and buckling under the weight of the injured returning from the frontlines, and grieving the many who don't return at all. It's a sharp contrast to Lily's soon-to-be wedding, and the boisterous holiday season with Strangford's family.

Benson manages to write the first chapters of seemingly innocuous day-to-day happenings during the holidays with increasing tension (I'm looking at you, you damn vase). A murder-mystery at a Lord's seaside cottage is just what we needed. Just in time for Christmas, too!

With the introduction of the inscrutable Inspector Kazi, Benson creates a wonderful antagonist that I couldn't help cheer on. He firmly reminded me a quote from Doyle's Sherlock Holmes: “Once you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, no matter how improbable, must be the truth.” But what is an inspector to do when the impossible and the improbable can happen?

Though the main plot felt quickly solved (if not resolved), what continued to grab my interest were the complex relationships. With the beloved Refuge Charismatics scattered, it was nice to see Lily still call on them for help and for them to answer. Benson continues to build her world outward, painting scenes and ambience with a succinct brush, that allows the reader to fill in the blanks. As usual, she continues to weave in just enough hints about supporting characters to satisfy, with enough crumbs left over to be hungrier for more. Elements of Lily's vision in the first book come to pass and are another nod at Benson's ability to meticulously weave plot threads over several books. Benson once said that she enjoys the fantastical that expands our world rather than be a world unto itself, and she continues to do just that with The Charismatics.

I sincerely hope that the Refuge's charismatics find someone to lead them anew. Benson's created such a fun ensemble that it truly is a shame to see them all so dejected and scattered to the four winds. There are several I could see taking up such a role and would frankly be pleased with any one of them. My only gripe is that I find Lily has been railing against her powers and being the bitter student for three books now. I very much want to see her rising above it and see where such growth leads.

Ultimately, a vastly enjoyable read (though fans of Sam will keenly feel his absence in this book). Given the ending, I am very much excited for whatever comes next!

The third book in Jacquelyn Benson's Charismatics series did not disappoint. It begins in December 1914. Lily, the central character, is only a week away from her wedding to Strangford, the man she loves. After the tumultuous events of the previous book, 'The Shadow of Water', Strangford is debarred from joining the butchery that has begun to take place on the battlefields of Europe due to his injuries. Moreover, she has a better grip on her mysterious gift than ever before. She should be in her happy place… but both the past and the future are shadowing it. Lily still misses her mentor, Robert Ash, and the war in Europe engenders a sense of frustrated powerlessness. She and her fellow charismatics all feel that somehow, with their unique abilities, they should be able to help.

When an opportunity arises, however, it does so in a way that none of them expect. When a serious crime occurs , Strangford is the chief suspect, and Lily believes that her gift may be partially responsible for the way events fell out. She must battle guilt, an annoyingly intelligent police officer, and the first Charismatic she has ever met who is not on the side of the angels, to clear Strangford's name and rescue her country from the possibly devastating consequences of treachery. On the upside, she finds a new ally in one of her half-brothers.

The surrounding historical background is not drawn in as much detail in this book as the first two in the series, possibly because very few people need the disastrous early days of the Great War explained to them, and possibly because there is not much room for it in and around the fast-paced action. However, Lily's internal life, and the tightrope she continues to walk socially due to her position as the illegitimate daughter of an actress and an aristocrat are as sensitively portrayed as ever. I was already in love with Benson's charismatic central characters, but fell further during the course of this book. I found the central whodunnit and the adventures of Lily and Strangford as they attempt to solve it so compelling that I could hardly put the book down. Highly recommended.

It is such a tragedy that this series--and Jacquelyn Benson, for that matter--is not better known. SO many people would like these books if they just knew about them.

One of the shortest installments in The Charismatics, Bridge of Ash is a quick mystery that the reader can easily figure out based on the clues provided. You’re not here for the mystery, you’re here for Lily and Strangford.

On retrouve tous les personnages que l'on aime. J'ai vécu tellement d'émotions en suivant leurs (més)aventures ! J'ai tremblé pour eux, j'ai souri, j'ai été émue... Franchement, j'ai tellement le coup de coeur pour cette saga !

J'ai hâte que le 4e tome sorte même si j'ai peur qu'il me brise le coeur !

Wonderful continuation of the series! I find the Charismatics series really intriguing because it combines so many different genres together – part Victorian/WW1 historical romance + murder mystery + supernatural powers. Ms. Benson does a really good job of researching the time period and building up the mystery in each book all under the larger story arc of World War 1. I highly recommend this series to those who like Downton Abbey, Agatha Christie mysteries, and X-men.

And while I felt like the 2nd book was too fast paced because it was a high-stakes race to prevent the complete destruction of London, this 3rd book started off a little too slow. We begin out in the countryside of the UK, a week before Christmas and Lily and Strangford’s Christmas wedding. Lily and Strangford are visiting Strangford’s family and the whole setting seems like something out of Downton Abbey. Lily is still trying to get used to her stronger prophetic powers and the idea of becoming part of a family.

Pros:

Mystery plot: I really enjoyed the murder mystery plot and the WW1 espionage conspiracy. The combination of supernatural powers and murder mystery makes it even more creative. While I sort of guessed “whodunnit”, I could not figure out how or why.

Romance: I loved the relationship between Strangford and Lily, although I feel like they needed more time together to talk about the future. They were always getting interrupted, but at least they’re finally together. Their characters as individuals are super interesting, but together they are even better.

Cons:

Communication: I was slightly annoyed by how many times Lily said she felt guilty about something. At times she has a really strong backbone and logical mind, but other times she wavers and refuses to voice her thoughts. I think a lot of things would be solved a lot quicker if she communicated more and stopped feeling guilty, she also needs to recognize that she should not feel guilt or responsibility for other peoples choices.

Humor: I think this books was missing a little bit of the humor/sarcasm that would have lightened the mood a little (mostly because Sam is not in it), but that may be asking too much when the entire plot takes place in the midst of a horrific war.

Overall, I am really looking forward to the final book (Book 4) in the series and figuring out how Lily will prevent certain deaths or catastrophes in WW1.

Ah, Jacquelyn Benson has done it again!

The third instalment in The Charismatics series, this book is still absolutely chock-full of mystery and intrigue - taking place in December and feeling a little more cosy-ish than the previous two, it is certainly perfect for the time of year I've read it in. The book does start off rather slower - setting the scene for life after the events of book two - but this does change, ramping up rather quickly, and just doesn't let you go.

I love the development that characters have taken on - primarily Lily, who we follow through the thoughts and eyes of over the series. She really has come into her own, and I love how her life outside of the world of charismatics is also coming together. I also really liked that the world of charismatics, people with more unusual abilities such as talking with the dead, seeing the future, communicating with animals, is delved into in a bit wider - I would love to see more abilities introduced, as I am totally intrigued! Regarding Lily's ability, although she is gaining mastery over it - I love that nothing about it is clear-cut; it's not necessarily easier due to being able to utilise it more, and it feels like it's also pretty indiscriminate and isn't moulded to her wants to protect what she cares about.

The ending feels like it has paved the way for an amazing stage for the next entry in Lily's life - the stakes have certainly gone up, and I cannot wait!

I try to avoid spoilers, but this next bit could be seen as a bit spoilerish for the series as I chat a bit about characters - I don't say anything explicitly, but I know if I was reading this before reading the series, I'd then start forming all these theories about the whys



After the events of book two, I must admit I wasn't sure how I'd feel about this one - World War I is breaking out, and the dynamic between the characters is totally different now. I usually lament this kind of change in a book all the way through, but Jacquelyn kept me enthralled in the story and it was only the first chapter or so really where it was playing on my mind. From then on, the missing characters are still brought up and feel very much present, even though they're not actually there, and this just really worked for me.

J'ai adoré !
Une fois de plus j'ai été totalement séduite par la narratrice !
Adélaïde Poulard est décidément mon incontournable, je sais que je vais passé un super moment avec ces lectures et il est possible que je finisse par l'écouter "les yeux fermés" ! Je vais choisir ses prochains titres, ou en tout cas je vais surveiller de près !

Côté histoire, nous avons une histoire super, avec une touche de fantastique et dans un cadre historique.
Nous sommes à présent aux (tout) débuts de la première guerre mondiale. On voit la vision qu'en avait les civils anglais et ce côté "c'est loin", "ce sera rapide" 'on est les plus forts".
En parallèle, Lily va bientôt se marier avec Strangford ! C'est d'ailleurs cette date qui va nous permettre de nous repérer dans le temps. Car au final, cette histoire se déroule sur une période de huit jours à peu près !
Mais un meurtre a lieu, et une fois de plus Lily va devoir se mêler de l'enquête pour innocenter une personne, sauf que cette fois ce ne sera pas son ingrat beau-frère. Entre crainte de la guerre, craintes liés à son mariage et à sa belle-famille, crainte pour ceux qu'elle aime... la pauvre Lily a bien du mal à avancer.
Tourmentée, elle va néanmoins renouveler sa confiance dans ses alliés et puiser de la force en eux, dans leur soutient et leur confiance en elle. Si le Refuge n'est plus, eux sont toujours là et seront toujours là les uns pour les autres. Même Sam, qui est le grand absent de ce récit, réussira à faire des apparitions (en quelque sorte).

J'ai aimé le tout : les nouveaux personnages, l'histoire, l'enquête, Lily et ses doutes qui réussit à les surmonter et à avancer malgré tout. L'ambiance historique aussi m'a beaucoup plu et ce n'est pas un aspect que j'ai retrouvé bien souvent dans mes lectures.
De plus, cette série peut vraiment être lu dès le collège, car jamais nous ne nous retrouvons dans des situations "trop" (trop de violence, trop de sang, ou trop de sexe). C'est à souligner car s'il y a une scène intime, l'autrice ferme pudiquement la porte.

Toutefois, si je peux me permettre un reproche, c'est la propension de l'autrice a se répéter en permanence ! J'ai l'impression de lire un roman-feuilleton où on est obligé de régulièrement rappeler des morceaux de l'histoire. Là j'ai eu la sensation que toute les cinq minutes il fallait qu'elle redise la même chose. Je l'admet, ça m'a pas mal agacée.

A noter que ce fichier audio propose au début une nouvelle qui se déroule entre les tomes 2 et 3. Les événements qui s'y déroulent ont de l'importance pour la suite (du moins vont être évoqués) et je ne vous conseille pas de la zapper. Centrée sur Sam et Lily, elle se déroule juste avant le départ du jeune homme.

J'ai maintenant très très hâte d'écouter le tome 4.

Et voici venu l’heure du tome 3 du “Lys de Feu” de Jacquelyn Benson, que j’ai la chance de pouvoir découvrir en audio grâce à Netgalley et VOolume ! Je les enchaîne assez rapidement à mon grand plaisir !
Comme pour les autres tomes, l’héroïne est Lily, une jeune charismatique qui voit l’avenir à travers de visions qu’elle contrôle plus ou moins bien. Elle est fiancée avec Lord Strangford. Ils doivent se marier une semaine plus tard, au moment où commence cette histoire. Ils sont invités à passer quelques jours chez Virginia, la sœur de Strangford. Malheureusement, pendant ces quelques jours, un autre invité se fait assassiner. Qui a fait le coup ? D’autant que tous les indices pointent en direction de Strangford lui-même !
Cette saga se bonifie au fur et à mesure des tomes ! J’adore trop ces histoires. Les personnages sont tellement attachants ! Autant Lily que Strangford sont bien approfondis, pourvus de failles et de regrets. Ils sont tous les deux empêtrés dans leur charisma, alternant entre le désir de s’en servir et celui de s’en débarrasser. Mais à grand don, grandes responsabilités. Et chacun doit suivre sa voie, d’autant que la guerre gronde aux portes de la Grande Bretagne. J’ai adoré également mieux connaître la sœur de Strangford, Virginia ainsi que son mari et ses enfants.
L’histoire de ce tome est passionnante, nous découvrons les différents avenirs possibles à travers les visions de Lily, partagée entre l’égoïsme de son bonheur personnel et celui du plus grand monde. Ce tome est très axé complots et espionnage sur fond de 1ère guerre mondiale, que je connaissais au final assez peu du point de vue anglais.
Bref, autant l’histoire que les personnages m’ont à nouveau plu dans ce tome 3. J’adore ! D’autant que la narratrice a une voix très agréable et rend bien les émotions des personnages.
Je vous conseille cette excellente saga dont j’ai hâte de connaître la suite et fin !

The Charismatics series is amazing!

I love the world that Jacquelyn Benson has created within Regency London. She takes history and adds an air of mystery and intrigue.

Bridge of Ash is the third book in a series that is still going strong. Benson has an uncanny ability to weave a plot that leaves you on the edge of your seat, holding your breath. There are so many layers and details, it was impossible to put the book down.
I also love her characters. Even the secondary characters have so much depth and richness to them that it's really hard to pick a favorite. Lily is such a strong female character, one struggling to keep up with the changes inside and the changes to her life. She's so bold that it makes those vulnerable moments even more meaningful. I'm really glad we get to see more of her relationship with Lord Strangeford, who is a wonderfully deep, complex soul. I don't want to give anything away, so I will just say there is a lot of growth within the characters and it has some unexpected affects on some of their closest connections.

I picked up the first book, Fire in the Glass, because of a recommendation (and because of that gorgeous cover), and I'm so glad I did. This has quickly become one of my favorite series! I think this book has something for everyone.

Devoured it

As I did with the two previous books in Jacquelyn Benson’s Charismatics series, I devoured this novel, stopping only for food, rest, and those pesky family interactions life demands (I write this tongue-in-cheek, but it isn’t too far from the truth!).
The continuing saga of Lily and Strangford and the other London Charismatics finds the characters in the first months of the Great War. The impact of the war changes the course of all their lives, from those who must fight to those who must tend the wounded —to those who can see or read the fate of the people —strangers and loved ones—who surround them.
Espionage figures into the story this time, and loyalties are tested and allegiances are challenged. With so much that cannot be shared with the general public, or even with their accusers, the characters at the novel’s center have to walk a proverbial tightrope. They uncover and then must foil plots against their nation. They must work with what they have, which becomes nearly impossible. We see them evading concerned government authorities, avoiding arrest, and revealing information without revealing how they know what they know. It is dangerous, suspenseful work, and the book holds onto and ramps up that tension in delicious ways. This is a truly exciting, delightful series.

This was the installment I was hoping for with what Benson teased in book 2! The pacing was fast, with the story taking place over the course of around a week, but really focused in on Lily and Strangford so it didn’t feel choppy. I appreciated the character development (less angst, growing into talents and accepting them/the hand they were dealt) and deeper dive into family dynamics (& what makes them, beyond blood)… and the introduction of WWI truly hitting Britain. Sam fans will be disappointed by his absence but Gardner had a strong showing, and Cairncross’ ‘interesting’ brief moment will likely (okay, hopefully!) play a pivotal role in future books. The penultimate chapter featured a real-life historical figure who I felt might have been a bit of pandering to the history lovers but it set the stage for some future excitement for Strangford, and by extension, the rest of the Refuge otherwise unengaged in the war effort. The last chapter is a gift to fans- heartfelt and a happy spell for the characters who’ve been put through the wringer.

I finished this book sad I’ll have to wait the better part of a year for the next volume, which is a job well done. I liked this better than “The Shadow of Water,” and can’t wait to see what Ms. Benson delivers!

Ce tome commence par une petite nouvelle ( oh combien importante!) qui clôture parfaitement un certain événement du deuxième tome. Au vu de son importance je trouve vraiment primordial et génial qu’elle ai été ajoutée !

Je sais que je me répète, mais cette série se bonifie au fil des tomes !
Nous nous retrouvons avec une toute nouvelle dynamique, qui n’est absolument pas dépaysante mais extrêmement plaisante !

On accompagne Lily, dont la vie va radicalement changer, qui essaie de se faire sa place dans ce nouveau décor, loin de tout ce dont elle a l’habitude. ( J’avoue que, comme les tomes précédents, il y a toujours autant de répétitions, mais c’est bien là un défaut, si je peux appeler ça comme ça, extrêmement mineur)

Le début de l’histoire a une aspect très chaleureux, début de fêtes de fin d’année, un côté très convivial et familial… dans une version cluedo vraiment sympa !

Comme d’habitude on ne s’ennuie absolument pas et il est très difficile de faire des pauses durant la lecture/écoute !

Les protagonistes sont toujours autant bien travaillés et ont tellement de choses à apporter ! Et j’ai particulièrement aimé l’évolution entre Lily et Strangford, vraiment ces deux là sont incroyables !
Malgré ça, je ne saurai dire quel protagoniste je préfère, tellement ils m’ont tous touchés ! ( Peut-être Sam ?)

J’ai qu’une hâte, connaître la suite !

Livre audio – Lu par Adélaïde Poulard : 12h45

Toujours aussi ravie d’écouter Le Lys de feu avec ce 3ème volume qui se passe un an plus tard. Décembre 1914, Lily a accompagné Strangford pour un séjour chez sa soeur dans le Hampshire. La région s’est transformée en camp d’entrainement pour les nouvelles recrues et en hôpital de fortune pour les blessés rapatriés de Belgique !

Les relations avec sa future belle-mère ne sont pas chaleureuses et Lily a un peu de mal à assimiler les us et coutumes de la bonne société.

Un démarrage tout en douceur après une nouvelle où Lilly et Sam se confronte à Cannon. Depuis Sam est parti à la guerre. Un invité assassiné peu avant Noël vient mettre à mal l’équilibre qui s’était instauré et Strangford se retrouve en mauvaise posture. Un tome de feu, de sang et de trahison mais avec beaucoup de complicité et de confiance dans le couple et cette romance a toute sa place dans ces aventures !

Comme pour les volumes précédents la narration d’Adélaïde Poulard est tout à fait adaptée et c’est un plaisir renouvelé de l’écouter ! J’attends le volume 4 avec impatience !

Le troisième tome de Le lys de feu de Jacquelyn Benson a des allures de fête ! Après les drames du tome précédent, ce nouvel opus apporte un peu de douceur bien méritée alors que les personnages se préparent à la guerre. La famille de Virginia Eversleigh ajoute une touche cocooning bienvenue avec ses enfants espiègles, comme Lysander et Dorcas, qui m’ont fait fondre. Portia, sérieuse et intelligente, est un personnage que j’ai adoré rencontrer.

Alors que la Première Guerre mondiale se profile, Lily et lord Strangford avancent doucement vers leur mariage. Pourtant, un drame s’invite : un meurtre ébranle la belle réunion familiale, et Strangford est le principal suspect. L’innocence de Lily et sa quête pour découvrir la vérité m’ont captivée. Jacquelyn Benson nous embarque dans une intrigue immersive mêlant fantasy et cosy mystery, où chaque décision compte dans un monde incertain.

🌟 En bref : Un tome entre mystère et ambiance chaleureuse, parfait pour les fêtes ! 🎄
