Right, Said Fred: The Most Entertaining and Enjoyable Book of the Year

Rate this book
Does anybody else watch Donald Trump as a guilty pleasure? When social distancing is over, can people still keep their distance? And these days, why has everyone got an opinion on everything and insist on sharing it? Oh. Scratch that one.
From one of Britain's most-loved national treasures comes a much-needed Bible of straight-talking honesty and sharp observational humour. Fresh from months of staying at home, Freddie is ready to impart his effortless charm and wisdom on a wild array of topics.
From the significant: climate change - maybe it's our time to go? To the vital: I'm only doing things I like doing now, not the things I should.
From time-worn questions: what even is political correctness and has the world really gone mad? To our new reality: what are the politics of zoom and is it okay to keep pretending my computer has crashed?
Freddie takes you on a whirlwind tour of his brain as he ponders more of life's most unfathomable questions. Like, just what do you get when you receive the coveted Toby Carvery Gold Card?

This isn't my usual read but I like Freddie Flintoff and regularly watch ALOTO and Top Gear, we even watched the Fish and Chip van series that he did a few years ago. Having recently watched the documentary on BBC about Bulimia as presented and told by Flintoff (definitely worth a watch it was really well done) I found myself gravitating towards 'Right, said Fred' just to find out more about Flintoff outside of the TV screen.

It's not an out and out autobiography in that it isn't a chronological telling of Flintoff's life and/or career. It is a series of topics of interest that Flintoff gives his opinion on. Everything from the current state of cricket to presenting on Top Gear to Christmas and Getting Old.

It was so bluntly and unapologetically Freddie Flintoff. It reads exactly how he comes across on TV, I was literally reading it in his voice and it did make smile and chuckle.

It was a bit contradictory, with the main theme being 'I don't think people shoud be so public with their opinions' especially when this is essentially a book of opinions. But I forgive it.

I've read it over two afternoons and found it to be a quick and enjoyable read.

Although the irony of me posting my opinion to social media is not lost on me...🤦🏻‍♀️

Literary equivalent of lift music, which is exactly what I needed this week.
It’s straight forward and raises the occasional smile.

This is not my usual read but after seeing this book come up on #borrowbox and watching Freddie on Top Gear each week, I thought I’d be entertained. Freddie gives his opinions on topics such as Christmas, social media and the pandemic. It was a funny and entertaining read. 3 🌟 I read this for the prompt ‘funny’ as part of the @tbrtacklechallenge 📖

A very funny and entertaining quick read. I could just hear Freddie speaking as I was reading this book and found it very enjoyable. Puts many things we all do on a daily basis into perspective. Highly recommended

* I listened to the book on Audible *

Honestly haven’t laughed at a book the way I have this one in a long time! Such a good book to listen to, especially in the mornings on the way to work.

There wasn’t anything I didn’t agree with him on. He made a lot of relevant & funny points about life I.e: Coronavirus & social media.

The only chapter I skipped was the cricket/sport one just out of personal preference as I wouldn’t know what he was on about!

I wish the book was longer, I could of listened to at least 10 more chapters!

Highly recommend.

I feel sorry for the ghost writer that had to put this together. I generally find Flintoff quite entertaining but this book is the confused ramblings of someone trying fill a book despite having nothing to say. The waffles ranges from topics Flintoff is qualified to talk about (cricket) to areas he's probably best steering clear of (colonial guilt), regardless of the topic he has a tendency to contradict himself and often loses his thread and states to opposite of his original point. A turgid mess.

Andrew 'Freddie' Flintoff takes on many different topics in this rambling response to the pandemic and it's limitation on what we can do, where we can go and who we can see.

It's part autobiography - mostly about his roles in Top Gear, Talk Sport and In a League of their Own. To me, however, Flintoff will always be an iconic cricketer and it was for this reason I picked up the book.

It was a great bit of escapism, with Freddie's opinions on all sorts of things put down on paper almost like a stream of consciousness, such that he does contradict himself (by his own admission) quite often. But if you're reading this you're very unlikely to be expecting the author to come up with any solutions... it's more like chatting with a mate, a beer and pub (ah... bliss!!) Only thing wrong is the ridiculous subheading for the book (I mean publisher... really?) but if you ignore this it's a great way to pass a few evenings.

This book by Andrew Flintoff is not the kind of thing I’d normally read but I received it as a Christmas present I thought I might as well give it a try. Because of lockdown, I only received the book relatively recently and lockdown is one of the things occupying Flintoff’s mind in this book. Part rant, part stream of consciousness, part philosophical delve, part meandering waffling, part nostalgic binge, the book is an entertaining romp through a range of subjects. You can’t help warming to Flintoff. At times I found myself laughing out loud and nodding my head at his words - and the book actually reads as if he just recorded his stream of thought on a digital recorder ready for an editor to transcribe. I wonder whether that’s how he ‘wrote’ it? Anyway, despite not being my usual reading of choice, I’m glad I picked it up and read it.

This is the second book of Freddie's that I have read as I read his last book 'Do You Know what?' during lockdown last year. If you have read that book then this follows a similar theme, Freddie chats in his trademark way about his opinions on various topics such as Trump, Pandemics and Social Media. I really enjoy his books as he always has a refreshing take on things, he poses thought provoking questions and writes with good humour, you will find yourself nodding along.

I dropped my review from 5 stars to 4 as I felt a little short changed on the content of the book, the book is double spaced with wide margins and I easily finished the book in a few reading sessions, I'd wait for the paperback as that might be less wasteful on paper. Another small criticism I had is that there was more on cricket in this book than in the previous book and I am not a big fan. However don't let that put you off, Freddie writes with such passion and enthusiasm for cricket that he makes the sections accessible for those who don't have an interest in the sport. You'd probably enjoy it more if you were a fan of cricket though which is understandable with his sporting background.

I recommend this book for anyone after a light-hearted, easy read.

I wanted a nice simple book I could just pick up for 5 mins here and there and this turned out to be the perfect fit.
It's my first Flintoff book and I admit I'm predisposed to like him. Years of cricket and A League of their own, I've even really enjoyed Top Gear. Initially something felt not quite right, then I started reading it with his voice in my head and it just worked. He is exactly what you expect and it makes for a great read.
The only problem is that there are about as many words on a page as when I wrote stories at infants school and it just didn't last long enough... Might need to get another one.

Not so much a biography as the ramblings of a middle aged man written as if he’s just sharing his opinions down the pub. He often drifts off on a tangent and has often contradicted himself by the time he makes it back to his original point. Freddie on more than one occasion acknowledges that he’s done this and makes no apologies for it. He writes with abandon, takes no prisoners and cares little if his opinions are not currently fashionable.

That said, its still a fun little read which I totally read in Freddie’s voice.

I am not a cricket fan, never have been and never will be but I do like Andrew “Freddie” Flintoff. I was obviously aware of him before he started presenting Top Gear but it was this show that had me chuckling at his antics with Paddy and Chris. This book isn’t just about Top Gear, it’s pretty much Freddie’s take on a few subjects. I like they way he speaks his mind without being offensive. I’m not gonna lie the cricket chapter went over my head but other than that there were quite a few topics where he definitely has a good point. Plenty of laugh out loud parts in this book.

I loved this book, it had me in stitches throughout. I can really relate to so much of Freddie’s views on life.

He’s such an authentic and humble man, you’ve just got to respect him and his approach to life.

The section on cricket was a little boring if I’m honest. I do actually quite like cricket, but that chapter was quite in-depth for me.

I listened to the audiobook version of this and was a little disappointed when I realised it wasn’t actually Freddie that was going to be doing the narration. But the narrator did a great job, even if he did sound just like Jordan North!

Very funny and written well, its about lockdown and to look back on life the present & forward too in these strangest of times. I Enjoyed reading his book. I had flintoff’s strong accent in my head when reading certain parts & I can just imagine his face when he talks about things
A lot of things I can relate to as I’d imagine a lot of people could
Worth a read, very enjoyable a top man, a family man and what I’d call a normal man with his values in the right place

Big fan of Freddie Flintoff but this book is a bit of a mish mash of thoughts and styles and not really sure that it comes across that well as doesn't seem to be any flow/format to it.

That aside there are some interesting moments in it but if I could give 2.5 stars then I would but 2 seemed harsh so got a 3.

I possibly would still recommend it to Flintoff fans as he is just a top bloke and plenty of fun.

I'm a big fan of Andrew Flintoff, cricketer. I also loved his Lord of the Fries series and I really like him on Top Gear.
His book wasn't what I expected - it wasn't an autobiography and it wasn't the collection of sporting anecdotes that I would normally expect from a book by a former international cricketer.
It was actually a collections of opinions and it was an interesting glipse into the mind of Andrew Flintoff.

I absolutely love Flintoff, so thought I would try one of his books. There were some chapters that made me laugh and I thoroughly enjoyed it, however some of them I was not very interested in.

I am glad I read this, because even though I have watched his documentary and ALOTO, I could understand more about his views and opinions on certain aspects of life.

He was a far better cricketer than he is a raconteur. The mere fact that the text in this book has been formatted to double line spacing tells you that Fred hasn't got much to say at all. There are couple of mildly amusing accounts of his bafflement at being a dad in the modern age, but that's about it.

A genuinely funny and easy read.

Each chapter Flintoff picks a topic and discusses it, with not much apparent connection between chapters, which is great because it makes it very easy to read.

Think I read it cover to cover in about two sittings

I thought this book was really funny, Freddie Flintoff is such a funny character and I learnt alot about him that I didn't even know about. To think that this is the same person who played cricked for England is amazing. Great book and really enjoyed it
