Detective January Day is hunting for the person who killed her brother. On the verge of giving up and self-destructing, she is confronted by a man who can wield fire and a man with wings. Convinced she has lost her mind, she quickly learns that there is a rational, yet extraordinary explanation.
If January has any chance of saving her city, and reality itself, she must start by believing they deserve to be saved at all.
Seth Rain lives in the Black Country, in the UK, waking far too early in the morning to write dystopian science fiction novels. Having studied English and Philosophy at University, he went on to attain a Master of Arts in English Literature. He has been a fan of dystopian and science fiction stories for some time and is now embarking on writing a series of novels of his own.
When he's not writing, Seth teaches English to 11-18 year olds. And when he's not writing, or teaching children, he spends time with his own two teenage children, his girlfriend, films, music and above all, books.
What an amazing book! Electronic Gods is like dystopian meets detective noir wrapped up in The Matrix!
January has a dark past. All she wants is to find out the truth about what happened to her brother. But sometimes the truth is more dangerous than the lies we are told. I really don't want to give anything away. There are so many layers to this book, and it would be really easy to accidentally give away an important plot twist. Suffice it to say, this is one of my top 5 must-read books of this year.
I was not a huge fan of the audio narrator's breathy voice. It didn't feel like it fit the tone of the book, but I didn't let that influence the pure joy I experienced while I took this journey with January Day.
I was given a free copy of the audiobook in exchange for an honest review, and honestly I am so glad I accepted this book! You have to read/listen to it.
I really enjoy Seth Rain's writing and find myself eagerly awaiting the next announcement of a new book. As always, I was certainly not disappointed when I read this one. It combines classic sci-fi elements with a gritty detective novel, becoming cyberpunk along the way and then turns into a story which really has you questioning your own reality - just as a well written sci-fi book should! A great stand alone book, but also a fine basis for the series which is sure to follow.
The Reality of Reality This is an excellent book that raises a lot of interesting questions of whether your perception of reality is real. As with other books, this one created quite a discussion with my grandson. He is a gamer who write and moderates his own games. He likened the concept of this book to watching a TV show of someone watching a TV show watching … Are we one of those TV shows? I love Seth’s books, they have created a lot of cross generational conversations.
This is a really good read! Great ideas, a very enjoyable sci fi adventure, well written & well developed characters! I do always love this writers work & strongly recommend!
Started as a police detective novel with the protagonist female detective being an alcoholic drug abuser, then it morphed into a cyberpunk book, it was an interesting concept with the changing of realities due to hackers with godlike computer coding.
Received an audio copy from the author to review, this is an honest review. Narrated by Emily Mount- who does a truly fantastic job of bringing Seth Rain's cyberpunk/ dystopian adventure to life that makes the haunting story all the more memorable.
For detective January Day... all she wants is answers about her brother's death and she believes these "Coders" know something about it. What she and her fellow cops encounter is an underground world where those that can manipulate virtual realities can have an affect the real world... unleashing a tsunami of destruction. Beautifully mysterious and filled subtly shaded characters you'll love to follow through their journey. Seth Rain's newest series starts with a bang. Highly recommended.
This one is a wild ride. It starts off as what feels like a crime thriller, then throws in fantastical cyber punk elements, then takes a detour on what seems like a total non-sequitur (seriously, I was listening and checked to make sure I didn't accidentally switch books when I hit a certain section) and that isn't even the biggest of the surprises in the story. It does all come together to form a surprisingly cohesive and satisfying story.
This reminded me of a two sentence horror story that I read, but fleshed out in ways even my worst nightmares didn't reach. Lots of action, but this is primarily a character driven plot with sometimes surprising motivations and sometimes heartbreaking moments. Strong characters, good twist on the premise, and I appreciated the limitations placed on the characters and rules given to the multiverse. It is a sprawling concept that could easily spiral out of control, but Rain did an excellent job with it.
Overall I liked the narrator, she was easy to listen to and read clearly. This is book one in the Imagined Realities book, and while it does have a complete plot arc, it is also setting a larger stage for what is to come. You will want to follow up with Electronic Angels to see how the story progresses.
Really confusing first half, and then suddenly it actually all makes sense. The main character is a female detective, written from her POV, a change from Seth’s usual style, along with doom and gloom there’s also hope! There is a theory nothing is real, we are just virtual beings in a simulation like a video game. If that WAS true, how would we know? This is imaginative, if you go with the logic - believable, fast and furious. Although a great standalone, this is a brilliant start to a series

Clever and imaginative! Great, multi-faceted characters. Very interesting plot. Vivid descriptions. Kept me intrigued from the first page to the last. A GREAT read!
*I received a complimentary ARC of this book in order to read and provide a voluntary, unbiased and honest review, should I choose to do so.
This is a great story that I found was well written and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I will probably get the next book in the series because I found this one so absorbing. It certainly adds fuel to the fire around the idea of the Earth being part of some great cosmic experiment (and what could happen if the experiment goes wrong and does not get the desired result).
The first novel in the new Imagined Realities series is truly a joy to read. January Day is a great character, and the men she has to deal with are puzzling and weird. Brilliant.
I’m looking forward to the next book in the series !
Maintains Seth's consistent high octane style. Amazing 1st book in a new series. Questioning the nature of reality and perception. Cyberpunk melded with gritty detective novel. Current investigation led by detective January Day takes her to previously unimaginable places.
This review is based on the audio book. A well written, interesting concept of humanity. Good characters and good plot. In my opinion I did find the narrator to be monotonous and adding nothing to the story.
Has potential, conceptually, but fails to address so many plot holes, that the story becomes tedious, lacking the internal consistency it needs to suspend disbelief.
In the end, the book's like an experimental science fiction film based on interesting concepts, but with a weak execution.
Great premise for a storyline having not read any of the Author's previous published endeavors. This story remains very mystifying until the plot lines are eventually gathered together. Characters are likable. A ride and a half in reading enjoyment.
Will be starting the next volume (Electronic Angels) immediately when available!
