Sydria Hasler is a blank slate. After a tragic accident, her images of the past have vanished. All she wants is to get her memory back and return home—wherever home is. But the more she rebuilds her past, the more she wants to fight for a future with King Marx. Too bad it's all a sham.
King Marx McKane has never cared about anyone or anything, especially being king. When his father forces him to marry a mysterious woman, he starts taking things seriously. The only way out of his arranged marriage is to pretend that he's falling in love with his wife. This charade might end up being the most reckless thing Marx has ever done. Is he willing to sacrifice his life and his kingdom to set Sydria free?
Can their fake relationship lead Sydria and Marx to their genuine selves, or will deception cost them their freedom?
Kortney graduated from the University of Utah with an English degree and spent a few years before motherhood teaching 7th and 8th graders how to write a book report, among other things. But after a reading slump, where no plots seemed to satisfy, Kortney pulled out her laptop and started writing the "perfect" love story...or at least she tried. Writing love stories is her job...just kidding. Her real job is taking care of her five awesome kids and spending time with her husband.
Kortney loves a good romance movie or book, warm chocolate chip cookies, and traveling the world.
Oh boy. Where do I even begin? Kortney has done it again and I could not have a bigger book high. • This book picks up pretty close to the end of The Stolen Princess. Events of both Stolen Princess and Promised Prince are mentioned, and hold an important place in the story. If you haven’t read them, then this story might be a little confusing. • That aside, Kortney has now created one of my absolute favorite fictional guy ever. Marx is perfectly imperfect, hurt and broken but trying. Sydria is confused and hurt, not sure of who she is and trying to piece herself back together. Together, they work to build each other up, to help the other heal. • Kortney is masterful at weaving humor, tension (romantic and otherwise), and deep themes together in a way that’s fully engaging yet not overwhelming. There were parts where I wanted to cheer, parts where I was near tears, and parts where I wished I could crawl into the book and slap the characters with their own book (a certain someone in particular). • All and all, this is Kortney’s best book yet! The arranged marriage troupe, the intrigue and schemes, the answers to so many questions, the slow burn that burns YOU with its heat...I could not ask for a better book. 🥰 • Five hundred stars out of five! 🌟 Ages 16 & up!
OH. MY. GOODNESS!!! I don't know what to say. That was beautiful, truly incredible. Kortney, you've done it again and I can honestly say that The Forgotten Queen is my favorite in this series. Just wow. If I could give it more than 5 stars, I would!! 🤩🤩🤩
*clears throat* Ok, where shall I begin on this masterpiece? Everything was perfect. Absolutely amazing. The characters, the plot, MARX 😍, the romance, the FEELS, just everything!! The title makes me emotional and the cover is stunning.
Sydria was so strong and I loved her so much! I really felt like I could connect and relate with her (not in the losing memories part but in the trying to figure out who she is and where she belongs). She was so broken and lost yet strong and caring and I just loved her!! Marx is probably my favorite of the guy MCs (don't tell Trev! 🤫). He was hurt, lost, imperfect, but had a heart of gold and was trying. His past and insecurities make me want to hug him. I loved his personality and how he wanted to protect Sydria but also wanted her to grow into who she was meant to be. He and Sydria fit together and complimented each other in the best of ways! It helped that he was also handsome and oh so romantic. 😍😍😍
Dannyn was so much fun and I hope one of the future books will be her story! Lol I loved Marx and Kase's relationship and how Louden had to keep restricting their driving of the PTs because Marx kept wrecking it. 😂😂 I looooved getting to see all of the previous books' characters and how they all mixed together!! Without spoiling too much, I think how a certain king's thirst for revenge for his daughter was written well, though I do think his change at the end was a little abrupt.
The plot was crazy good!! The forgotten memories, the arranged marriage and then the pretend marriage, the mystery (although we the readers knew from the start) of who Sydria was and what was going on, the growing relationship between my two babies, the danger and deaths, the heartbreak and revelation, the trials, everything was written so well and kept me engaged the whole time!!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🤩 I literally couldn't put the book down and read every second I possibly could. Especially on that beach scene. 😍 Also can we talk about the setting for a second?? Who doesn't love books set at a beach! Ahh it was so romantic and beautiful!!
Speaking of romantic, I do want to say that as always, while Kortney does bring on the steam a few times, she keeps it clean, which I appreciate and love so much!
Guys I can't say enough about these books or this author! Kortney Keisel is now one of my top favorite authors and I will automatically buy anything and everything she publishes because I know without a doubt that it will be amazing. If you have somehow not read these books yet, I am begging you please do so!! You won't regret it.
I think this book is my favorite of the series so far. I loved the journey it took me on, the ocean front setting and of course I loved Marx and Sydria. There was so much chemistry and kindness there. I adore kindness. And attraction. And kissing. I wish there would have been more kissing. But still, I loved this one. Read this series in order! You won't regret it.
“Haven’t you ever played a part, hidden who you are to please the people around you?” He’d described her life every day since she’d come out of the coma. He shrugged again. “Maybe everyone is pretending. Are any of us being who we want to be, or are we just being some filtered version of ourselves?”
She's trying to remember. He's trying to pretend.
Sydria Hasler is a blank slate. After a tragic accident, her images of the past have vanished. All she wants is to get her memory back and return home—wherever home is. But the more she rebuilds her past, the more she wants to fight for a future with King Marx. Too bad it's all a sham.
This was a great book to end this series with. It’s a continuation of the 2 books before it- with a twist. It contains fun tropes such as, amnesia, fake relationship, and an arranged marriage. The banter wasn’t as thick in this one, but it was still a fun read. I liked how it focused on finding oneself, the truest version of who they are meant to be. The love story was sweet and I’m so glad a certain someone got their HAE! My favorite part of this book was how all the kings and characters from previous books played a role, and we got a glimpse back at everyone. They all worked together on something and it was neat. I really enjoyed this series and would recommend if you’re looking for a light, banter filled, romantic fantasy series.
Wonderfully written and extremely heartwarming romance !
I'm really enjoying this series ! Each book has a beautifully written storyline, and although being cast in a dystopian timeline, it isn't all violence, darkness and evil. There are a few bad guys, but each story is mostly about the couple getting to know each other in strange situations, some adventure, mystery and very interesting ways !!! Highly recommend each one so far !!!
This is one of my new FAVORITE books. Kortney really surprised me in this one. Her writing has really matured since A Promised Prince. Her characters felt flushed out and dynamic. I can always trust Kortney with a fantastic meet-cute, and she totally pulled through in this one. The marriage of convenience was done so well. And don’t get me started on THE BANTER. 👏🏻
I don't even know where to begin with this review... I have loved every one of Kortney Keisel's books in this series, each unique and wonderful in their own way. I appreciate the cohesive feel to the series but it's not repetitive! The Forgotten Queen is the fourth in the series and best if read the other 3 first so that you understand the world it is set in. From the beginning Marx and S (we'll call her that so I don't spoil anything!) had a great connection. That connection grows as they get to know each other and are forced into things they both didn't plan for. I can't really go into the plot because spoilers... just know it's fant-stinkin-tastic! I can tell you about my feelings about the MCs tho! Marx has such fun humor and a great care free attitude. That man is a catch! Flawed like anyone else but... whew. Book boyfriend anyone? He might even top Drake on my list of fav MC men. He also listen and shows he cares in so many ways. S was so sweet yet also fought hard thru her memory loss. Perfect couple alert! I loved Marx and S conversations as they were full of humor and care. They were so open and honest with each other, it was refreshing! Kourtney also does such a great job at side characters woven into the story. Elsbeth, Marx personal secretary, is a grumpy teddy bear that intrigued me. Dannyn, Marx sister, was my favorite with her playful attitude... more of her?!? She cracked me up! Do you like romantic tension (while staying closed door)... this is defiantly your book! Ugh, I can't give away anything, but there are lots of swoon worthy scenes. It might have taken me longer to read because I was rereading scenes! These words don't even do this book justice and you defiantly need to read this for yourself! Thank you Kourtney Keisel for the advanced copy in exchange for an honest review! These opinions are my own.
When I pick up a Kortney Keisel book, I pretty much know I’m gonna finish it within hours. I can’t put them down!
I loved The Forgotten Queen so much! The storyline kept me hooked.
I quickly fell in love with the characters. Sydria with the past she can’t remember and Marx with the past he can remember all too well. Watching these two broken characters come together was beautiful. I loved Sydria! She’s broken from her past but I loved watching her grow. She’s such a strong character and I really admired her. And Marx. He’s broken in his own way. He’s pretending. Watching him work through his own insecurities and past mistakes made him such a real, lovable character. I love how real these characters feel. I LOVED getting to see familiar characters, especially Renna and Trev! (These two are hilarious and I love them.😂)
The love story was so sweet. I find the fake-relationship trope really fun to read, and this one definitely was! I was cracking up multiple times. Kortney Keisel seriously writes some iconic scenes. The chemistry between the characters is the best. I really liked that this love story was more of a slow-burn. These two characters were definitely meant for each other.
I really like Kortney Keisel’s writing. The dialogue is just so natural that the characters feel like real people. Her writing keeps me hooked. It keeps me interested and invested in the story the whole time.
This story was truly so good. I felt all the feels.
*Thank you to the author for providing me with an ARC. All opinions are my own.
How do you summarize a story that gave you sooo many feelings all at once? I don’t know if I can really put my thoughts into words at this point. I’m going to try, though.
First, Sydria was a wonderful character. I loved how she championed the little guys and was a kind person to her core. Even with her memories missing, Sydria cared about others and had a completely open mind to people’s true selves without judgment.
The last 30+ percent of The Forgotten Queen broke my heart and mended it all at once. I found myself smiling, crying, and gasping. With Kortney, you never know what curveball she’s going to throw at you and there were definitely some surprises in here. Also, Kortney sure knows how to write kissing scenes. It was still clean, but there were so many instances that made me swoon right alongside Sydria.
King Marx was fabulous and I loved how both Marx and Sydria were better together. There’s a theme in this book that is just so sweet and perfect for their situations. Loved it! You should read this whole series.
After the huge cliffhanger in The Stolen Princess I was very curious about The Forgotten Queen. I was therefore very happy when I received my ARC. The Forgotten Queen almost immediately follows on from The Stolen Princess, but nevertheless you have to get back into the story for a while.
This book, like the previous parts, has several beautiful quotes that will stay with me for a long time. In this part, a fake relationship and an arranged marriage are the main tropes. Kortney Keisel has also managed to process the theme of amnesia in the book.
At first I thought that this book would be less good than the first parts, but oh my goodness Kortney Keisel just nailed it again! This book is really awesome!
Kortney has done it again and The Forgotten Queen blows every other book out of the water!!!! It picked up shortly after The Stolen Princess ended. Sydria and Marx had perfect chemistry together. Marx was the absolute sweetest to Sydria and wanted to help her figure out who she was and where she was from. He was the perfect gentleman and treated Sydria like the queen she was. This is absolutely my favorite book of the Desolation Series. I also need to find surfing lessons in Ohio!!! Who knew surfing could be so romantic?????
Even though each book is about difference characters, you NEED to read book 2 and ideally book 3 to understand this book. Although I will say there are some typos and details that didn't add up but I overlooked them. I wouldn't really say this book was dystopian either.Other than that I loved seeing the tea BREW! and Sydria and Marx's relationship develop.
I love this series! This was as good or better than the first three novels. Fresh, exciting, I loved the tie-ins with previous characters. Great drama, mystery, humor, and heart-pounding, clean romance!! I'm hoping we'll get a story out of the other 3 kingdoms!!
The Forgotten Queen by Kortney Keisel is the 4th book in The Desolation series. It is a swoony clean romance with marriage of convenience, hidden identity, and self- redemption.
First of all, let me just say this series absolutely must be read in order! This story is full of dramatic irony that will not make sense if you haven’t read the previous books. But the dramatic irony is a huge part of why I loved this book so much!
Sydria and Marx are both lost souls trying to discover who they truly are and pursue a life that will actually make them happy. But there are so many obstacles in their way. One of those challenges being an arranged marriage neither of them wanted. Soon after Marx and Sydria are married they promise to do everything they can to find a way out of this marriage and return Sydria to her home. The only problem is, Sydria doesn’t remember who she is or where she came from.
There were so many things I loved about this book! But the number one thing I loved most was seeing Sydria and Marx influence each other for the better. I loved how they supported one another and helped each other feel valued, important, and capable. They both just needed someone to truly care about them and love them for who they are, not who they have been told to be.
This book really kept me on the edge of my seat! I loved the pacing of the plot, the character growth, the dramatic irony, the swoony love story, and the hilariously awkward moments. Kortney Keisel knows how to write a captivating story with lovable characters and an exciting plot.
I highly recommend The Forgotten Queen to anyone who loves dramatic dystopian love stories. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and am already looking forward to the next one!
The truth is that in Renna's book I never had a good opinion of Seran, however, I don't think that amnesia alone made her change.
As Seran was raised to be haughty, regent and set an example to a people who were to be led by her in the future.
Being Syria, despite not knowing who she was, she freed herself from the pressure of royalty.
When she didn't even know who she was as Syria, she found her way through Marx's help, and I think that forged the character of who she always wanted to be, but who the expectations of others overruled as a person and forced into the royal role.
Although I didn't like that the author gave her little importance during the trial, I really enjoyed watching her grow, blossom, freeing herself from the demands on her and seeking to be happy with the man she chose for herself. This was not imposed or arranged. The man who loved her in spite of and because of her.
It was a good series finale, but I am left waiting for more story as there are more realms and I would very much like to see the future of these couples with a little more depth.
And UNFORGETTABLE story ! I can’t compliment this author enough. This story made me so happy, there was so much to unpack , considering the previous 3 books. I loved how precious books and characters were brought in. I’m never really ever ready to let go previous characters I loved so I am so glad they were as involved in this book as the previous one!!!!!!
I could go on and on , on all the great things about this series but you’ll just have to read them yourself. Then come talk to me because I need people to talk to!
I flippin’ loved this book and the close to this series!!!🥹🥰 I can’t talk about too much of the plot because of the big spoilers, but I absolutely LOVED how it all ended and I’m so glad there were connections to the previous books’ characters throughout!!
Also Marx is just 🥹💗?! The way he loves her is just so beautiful -watching broken people love each other and their brokenness while bringing out the best in them is just so healing❤️🩹
Everything personal to her was blank, not even a shred of a memory or a past.
If you have read the book before this then you know who Sydria is The book starts nine months after the last book.
I think Sydria and Marx are my favorite couple. I love the relationship as it grows. I love how Marx doesn't dictate what Sydria is supposed to do like in previous books that people did to her. I wonder which Kingdom is next. There are at least two or three books I think that are supposed to be next. I can’t wait until they come out.
Actual rating: 3.50 ⭐ This is a "it's not you, it's me" kinda situation. I shouldn't have picked it up while I'm in the midst of this awful reading slump. Probably my least favourite book out of the series. But still it was fun, quite enjoyable and has great tropes in it.
Wow! This review will be about the whole series. Each book got better and more intriguing! I loved how this book especially brought out all of my emotions and came to a fabulous conclusion!
Oh the torture this put me through! (It was short lived but still). With each book of the desolation series I thought “oh this is definitely my favorite couple” but with each new introduction it just gets better and better. The trial and execution scene gave me so much anxiety! I couldn’t read fast enough. To see both Marx & Seran blossom into who they were always meant to be made me so happy.
my goodness! i can’t even begin to explain how amazing this book was! kortney keisel has done it again, she had connected all four book while still keeping them different!
The Forgotten Queen was amazing!! Kortney did an incredible job on this story and it has worked its way up beside The Promised Prince on my favorites list. I hope there will be more books in this series because they just get better every time Kortney writes a new one! Highly recommend checking this book out after reading the other books in the series!
Content - there’s romance (kissing is as far as we read but more is alluded to or jokes about), a good dose of violence compared to the other books, and no language. Clean but still recommend for 17+
"He offered her his hand, pulling her onto the machine behind him. The position made her pink dress hike up a little, revealing long tan legs that were currently straddling him. Her arms closed around his body, and the palms of her hands grabbed his chest as her body pressed against his back. Marx wanted to thank whatever person invented personal transporters look them in the eye and shake their hand. He owed this moment to them." . "Her hands rested on his hips, and she looked up. "All done," she whispered. Marx's eyes blazed. "That might have been the best twenty seconds of my life." Hers too." . " "Have you really slept in until one o'clock?" Marx placed his hands in his pocket. "If it's going to make you think less of me, then my answer is no. I'd never do that." " . There are about a million more where those came for. Seriously. Every line is highlight worthy in this book. . Some notes for your reading pleasure: - Sydria and Marx - the part on the beach- how long do kisses last? 😅 - I normally prefer stand alone novels but this series is the exception. I love it. A lot. - water meet cute 👏👏 Kortney, can this always be your thing? - the aquarium - I really love their banter. From the first moment. - the broom closet - "This had to be the strangest wedding ever." - I love it so much, I don't want to take breaks to write notes - I'm excited to have a couple I can root for without any reservations. - oh the dancing and the flirting. I can't even with this book. It's too good. - I've read this book before and I am still SO excited that they are falling in love. I may be too invested. 🤷♀️ - chapter 40 is amazing - very sweet ending. - I've said it before and I'll say it again and again and again, this is the perfect ending to the series. It's a love letter to each character that I've grown to love this past year. Perfect. Well done, friend. Well done. (Also, only kind of related: I really love that I am actually friends with Kortney. It's really cool)
Okay, The Forgotten Queen is easily my favorite book of the Desolation series, and Marx and Seran my favorite couple!
Goodness, where to begin? My thoughts and emotions have been everywhere!
I can't remember the last time a book had such a complex and intriguing plot. Story that's literally been building up for the last two books all comes together in this one. The scheming of the villains, the espionage, and everything all came together to make me unable to skip over anything, yet also reading quickly to see how everything played out.
Starting this book out, I was so eager to see how things turned out that I thought I could easily skim or speed read the scenes and chapters in the antagonists' POVs, but I was so drawn into the story that I found I didn't want to rush through even that.
Marx and Seran were so wholesome together. He's wounded, and she's lost herself. They turn out to be the best thing for each other. I loved how they met and were intrigued by each other before the marriage was arranged. Then I loved how they were brought together unwillingly, but they each had something the other needed, so they became allies, partners, and eventually friends as they worked together– Seran to help Marx concerning his father and the kingdom, and Marx to help Seran to find herself and her way home.
All that, AND they CoMuNiCaTeD! Seriously, both Marx and Seran were reasonable, responsible, respectful, and mature, both apart and together. When they first met, they talked. When they were about to be married, they talked. When they had a problem with something about the other person, they talked. When there was an awkward situation, they talked. When there was something that happened that could have easily been misconstrued, THEY TALKED!
It made my heart so happy and lifted them right up there to favorite couple, and favorite characters, of the whole series.
Goodness, there were so many scenes, moments, and little things that had me swooning, giddy, laughing out loud, and smiling like an idiot:
~Surfing together. ~The sunscreen application. ~The intermission during their wedding ceremony. ~The broom closet(s). ~The kissing lesson. ~Their banter in general. ~Their playfulness. ~Asking each other if they were okay and noticing when they weren't. ~The theme of sacrifice and "if you love them, let them go." ~ ~Their shared physical attraction to one another. ~The interview where Marx told Seran she could defer the questions to him to take the pressure off her. ~Seeing little pieces of Seran come through despite her blocked memories, such as remaining walking while being introduced by the herald, being nervous about small groups but commanding an entire crowd, feeling in place as queen as if she was always meant to be, and other things.
There were also bittersweet moments which tugged at my heartstrings and offered a beautiful balance to the story: ~ ~ ~ ~
I will say, as cute as the aquarium stuff was with Seran, and eventually Marx, not liking keeping the fish in a tank, I had to roll my eyes. Yes, Marx had the fish freed, but they went from being safe in an aquarium to being on their own out in the ocean. It's practically a death sentence for the fish, and no one ever considered that or thought it through, so that was a bit annoying. And then, after the aquarium was emptied, they replaced it with a butterfly terrarium, which made no sense and defeated the purpose of setting free one type of creature only to "trap" another. But whatever. That's a small thing compared to the rest of the story.
The relationship between Marx and his father was really interesting to me. They were like Faramir and Denethor 2.0. I wasn't expecting that plot twist to happen!
Also, it took me an embarrassingly long time to realize why Kase Kendrick's name was so familiar, and it hasn't even been that long since I read The Stolen Princess!
That trial had me holding my breath and in suspense. All I'll say is Myka and Davon FTW!! I was cheering internally, and highlighting like a fiend, haha!
It was fun seeing previous characters again; Davon and Emree several years after their book, Myka being queen, and Myka and Drake being married. Trev and Renna still grated on my nerves, but I was glad to see them stick up for Seran and fight for her,
And then after everything was said and done, blame it on the story being so well done and heart-wrenching, or just me being an emotional bean, but this one line actually got me crying:
I mean, how sad is that? But, happily, it all wraps up with a lovely and perfect ending that I loved.
If you couldn't tell, I enjoyed this one so very much and I'm immensely glad I read it as well as the entire series!
This story was the perfect escape read. Diving right into this story, I was totally invested in Sydria and her story, figuring out her trajectory as she is at the mercy and whim of others. When we meet our main hero, Marx, he has similar constraints placed upon him. I loved the setting, the beach and the way these two characters meet for the first time. Kortney mixes lots of sweet moments, mystery and intrigue with sprinkles of humor that captivated the reader. I read this book in less than a day and I only put it down when I had to go to a family's function 😂
My heart was totally 100% invested in these characters, their complex struggles and the tangled web they find themselves caught in. Kortney has mastered the element of suspense and once I reached a point (I want to say 50-60% of the way through the story) it was just like I had a reached the top of a roller coaster. The momentum of the story spiraled faster and faster and I could not wait to see what would happen next while simultaneously loving the excitement of the ride. The romance, the almost kiss moments, the chemistry between these characters (which was amazing), the twists and turns and the girl power group (if you know, you know - it was fabulous!) all made for such a compelling and enjoyble read. While this could be read as a standalone, it would make a lot more sense to know the backstory and understand the pre-established relationship between side characters.
I am so, so thankful to the author for sharing an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts are my own.
Okay people. I just finished reading an arc of The Forgotten Queen this weekend and my mind was blown 🤯 (yes, it was good enough to warrant the use of a mind blown emoji).
Sydria and Marx are so perfect for each other. They complimented each other in all the best ways. It was endearing to watch as Marx attempted to help Sydria discover her past. Also the aquarium. I loved how they bonded over the aquarium.
This book was also the perfect follow-up to the other books in the series. So many questions answered. The cameos of characters from the previous books (Davin and Emree, Trev and Renna, Drake and Myka....ah the reunion). Otis Sutton is downright terrible. And Meldrum McKane. He was pretty terrible too. Dannyn is awesome though. She deserves a medal for her heroics.
So basically, there is a lot to love here. If you haven't read this series, go fix that. Read them all starting with The Rejected King so you can read this one. Y'all can thank me when you're done.
Thanks to the author for the advanced copy; all thoughts are my own.
Wow! I’ve read all of Kourtney Keisel’s books and I was given this one as an ARC. I have to say, Kourtney just keeps getting better and better. This book is probably my new favorite of hers.
Sydria has amnesia and when she is married off to the King against her will, she shows just how strong and capable she can be. Luckily King Marx is funny and charming. He is sweet and their romance really takes off. Honestly I was surprised by the twist in the story and couldn’t imagine a better ending.
Kortney does it again! I really loved the growing relationships, the fake marriage, the forced proximity, and the whole rescue at the end. Marx is totally dreamy. Sydria is what I imagine a queen to be: kind, poised, genuine, helpful. As they try to solve some mysteries regarding her past while also building a marriage that needs to look real, they become so darling together.
Thanks to the author, Kortney, for my advanced copy of this book. All opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
I would give this a million stars if I could. I don't know why but I feel like I related to Sydria more then the characters in Kortney Keisel's other books. I loved the "fake" relationship between Sydria and Marx, and the flirty banter between them was just fantastic. I was literally crying at the end...
