Vinnie lives in a world where people like her are feared and hunted. She and her friends are Twisted, gifted with extraordinary abilities that they must keep hidden at all costs.
When Vinnie agrees to help a mysterious stranger who wants to stop a serial killer, she may have bitten off more than she can chew. But the killer is preying on the vulnerable and Vinnie can’t stand by and do nothing.
With the stranger’s help, Vinnie delves deep into her powers and learns new skills that help her track down the murderer. But when the killer strikes back, Vinnie's world is shattered and she must use every ounce of power at her disposal to save herself and her friends.
To stop the killer, Vinnie must confront her inner demons, navigate dangerous alliances, and learn to use her unique abilities — before it's too late.
When the world experienced a sudden blip in time, the aftermath revealed the rise of the Twisted, carriers of different powers, and resulted in their oppression. When a mysterious man requests help catching a serial killer, Vinnie and her found family are plunged into a fight, none of them can win. At least, not alone.
Whilst it takes time to grasp all the characters and complex world building, the investment is worth the effort. The found family of 'gifted' is suitably appealing and dysfunctional and the narrative has a gloomier, more mature feel than most of this type which grounds the story.
I can't tell you how much I love this story. It's a completely fresh urban fantasy with a well thought out setting and characters who feel so real, you'll find yourself getting attached to them. I also loved the way life in the city pulses beneath the conflict, sometimes affecting the events of the story. It's SO good, and I can't wait to read the sequel!
