A hidden city. A rising army. One girl to challenge it all.
After becoming a refugee, Elora's outlook on life takes a turn for the better inside camp Sanctum. There, she is allowed to explore the depths of her other-worldly abilities without fear or judgment among old and new friends. The future is promising until her visions reveal a haunting reality that endangers them all.
As her relationship with Jedek deepens and a new one emerges, Elora searches to correct the wrongs from the past and rescue those enslaved inside Cull.
This path forces her to work alongside deceptive enemies – because refusing their cunning scheme will risk the lives of those she loves most.
Citizen - deception doesn’t choose sides.

There is so much new content added to the worldbuilding in this book, wow. Admittedly, it can be hard to keep track of everything and -one sometimes, especially if it's been a hot minute since one read the first book. But: also admittedly, I think that there's something in it for everyone!
Action: The characters are blunt and sassy, which sometimes makes them lean toward a strange lack of empathy, even toward one another, and I'm sure this is certainly bolstered by their hatred of the "other" which they have been conditioned to have growing up, whether it be of the Humans, the Maos, or anything else that is different from themselves. I mean, it IS a dystopian! You can't entirely blame them for not knowing better than their society has made them think! To get back to the point, however, this somewhat unexpected nature that is found in this book's characters, paired with their love of picking fights and things like that, add an action-genre element.
Romance: There is a subtle love triangle for fans wanting just a touch of romance. Maybe it's even okay for me to call it a bizarre love triangle when the bad guys in this book call themselves the New Order! Just saying, though: I personally would be Team Jedek if we were to be casting votes. But maybe that's just me!
Leaning toward horror: The creepy character Suman (who is not altogether too different from Jeanine in the Divergent series by Veronica Roth and their movie adaptations; he had all the mannerisms of a serial killer, which makes sense, because he IS one!) and Claire, particularly when she's been taken over by the Presence, of course. Because otherwise, she was a good person! She was redeemed pretty quickly even when upfront, she seemed pretty yeesh.
So yeah --- I think that it's particularly interesting to me that her and Hank's characters stood out as being notably complex in this book to me because they had threads of both good and bad within them. I also personally liked Betty just because she's a spunky old lady. Apparently, I like spunky old ladies!
Now...I DO wish that the characters would have spilled their secrets when it would have been more helpful to the others for them to do so, ahh!! That would make things so much easier if we could all just know when and when not to do that, right? I understand that all the characters are having a really hard time figuring out whom they can safely trust, though. I kind of got the feel that maybe everyone was just so defensive and detached in nature a lot of the time because they had also been conditioned by their dystopian society to be self-protective. So again: I can't entirely blame them!
Other random themes I noticed/comments I have: "What is love?" Racial tension/genocide When people try to slight evil into simply being "justice" (because they're twisted.) Sort of a "I hate this life, but at the same time, I could never go back to who I used to be, knowing less" feel --- very relatable! It was crazy to have a cat driving a car toward the end...! There's even a unique, alternate version of Quidditch in this book! I have to find it funny that the Pairing event is called "Night Games" because I used to be a part of a youth group that would play Night Games together every summer --- that's exactly what we would call it --- and I can only imagine how hilarious it would have been if we had all had to pick a mate via playing those, haha! Kind of scary...! Yeah, this, and Elora's starved background, young age, and lack of trust, I think helped me to understand, though, why she might have been less interested in romance at this moment in time. Even though I like romance and wouldn't have minded it being more fully included in this book, I can imagine that there may have been good reasons behind her hesitation with Jedek and especially Lucca.
Overall, I think that my favorite parts of the book were about the 17th and 18th chapters and then the few chapters right there at the end; so much tension and suspense! We all will definitely have to be waiting out to see what happens in the third book.
Also, here are a few favorite quotes I found in this book, and here are some other media sources that the book reminded me of aside from the Divergent series. Happy reading!
"Order doesn't mean oppression." "Is there nowhere left to find peace in existence?" (relatable!) "Evil tactics are universal." "Grudges never work out for the one holding onto them."
The Giver by Lois Lowry/the movie adaptation The Darkest Minds (I've only ever really seen the movie, but I really liked it, and it has some similar themes) Unwind by Neal Shusterman (another dystopian book with horrifying human harvests in it) Star Wars The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood The Carve the Mark duology by Veronica Roth Alita: Battle Angel
I seriously can’t get enough of this series. I need to get my hands on the third installment. Like I said before, the series gives off a Divergent vibes, which makes it’s even more better because you don’t really know what or when to expect the twist to come. The character development was outstanding. There’s a bit of romance here and there, some action and suspense as alway, which is why we’re here, in all honesty.
Love this series and can’t wait for the next book to come out!
If you are looking for a new series to read, you need to start with book one. You will be shocked at how quickly you become deeply invested in the characters.
