Expect the unexpected when you take your place in Fae society.
When Grace arrives at the House of the Evening, she is instantly thrust into the world of the Fae nobility. As the heir to a throne she didn’t even realize was hers, she has to navigate magical education, complex traditions, and a stepfamily she never asked for. With her new tutor, Talon, and Aiden by her side, Grace steps out into the Upper Realm as Lady of the House of the Evening only to find a war exploding under her gaze led by the House of Darkness. With minimal training and outdated laws keeping her from stepping up for the war effort, she and Aiden must quickly strategize against the invaders while searching in earnest for the remaining six prophecy members. As the war rages on and more pieces of the puzzle fall into place, Grace must make a decision about who to trust and how to lead.
Cady Hammer has been a writer for most of her life. From the time she was eleven years old writing her first novel between classes, she always looked to the world to bring inspiration. She was often teased for being in her own world, but never hesitated to invite others along on the adventure. She graduated from the College of William and Mary with a Bachelor of Arts in History and is now pursuing a Master of Arts in Public History.
Cady is the author of the Chasing Fae Trilogy and loves to create stories that take people away from the world for a while. She creates her universes with inspiration from her studies, trying to create a place that feels so real that readers have to explore it. These stories explore the complexities of relationships crafted around the idea that love, friendship, and grief are all interwoven. She hopes to one day become a bestselling author alongside her desired career in museum work.
First of all, let me just say that I absolutely love this cover. Now on to the second book in the Chasing Fae trilogy. It was, what it was...a middle book. Did it leave me completely enraptured? No. But was it necessary in the overall storyline? Absolutely.
In Chasing War Grace integrates into her house. Her father, the High Lord, makes her learn all house and realm laws along with learning how to use her magic. She goes months without hearing from Aiden and feels lost.
**SPOILER ALERT**
Grace is struggling with who she is, while trying to survive assassination attempts and find her fellow prophecy members. When the war hits other houses, all hell breaks loose, and she's left in a position she neither wants nor is ready for.
She doesn't get much bonding time with her father before he's pulled away. Her stepmother and half-brother make it clear that they do not her around, although her half-sister cares and it truly helps her. Aidan chooses his House over her and will leave her to find her own way.
The prophecy members consist of an array of people with different gifts and personalities, two being the twins of the enemy, the House of Darkness. One of them being an old enemy of hers, Faolan. And after Aiden leaves, much everyone's disapproval he becomes her second on the War Council. Leading the War Council is a little too much, but she does it the best she can. Faolan and Grace become close and he's pretty vital to her protection.
I continue to love everything Hammer writes. She has a fantastic gift for world-building (which really showed in Chasing Fae) and has now made me grow like two unlikeable characters over the course of this series. She came up with what felt like a totally new taxonomy of magic/ how it's assessed and inherited that at least I have not come across before which was cool to read about and felt authentic to the world/series.
In many serialized fiction books, there's always that awkward scene where what happened in the prior book has to get summed up/ reiterated so that the reader remembers the important information and doesn't get lost (Jennifer Armentrout is so bad at these scenes they're always so annoying to read and completely take you out of the story). Contrary to the norm, Hammer cleverly incorporates this information in a way that smoothly fits into the story by having a side character reveal she knows more than she let on to the MCs (omitting names to not spoil it :). I know that's a smaller thing within the overall book but I loved this. I think this is one of many examples that show Hammer's attention to detail and gift for fantasy writing.
Hint, she kisses both. And both are her.second in command at some point. Okay I love this guy but he left her. Don't get me wrong it was for the right reason & she should look at the big picture they need the army. Grace is too hard on herself! She keeps criticising every move she makes but every leader can't win every mission. Even her father didn't win every mission. I wish he would have told her that. Foalon is the perfect bad guy. He loves to play games to get a reaction out of people. However, I think besides that deep down he's a good misunderstood guy. He really helps Grace learn a lot of magic. He protects her on missions. I'm interested to see what Gideon can do. If Grace hadn't gone to the House of War the realm would have perished to the House of Darkness.
After the first book left us with a cliffhanger, I was eagerly awaiting the next installment that I knew would continue the emotional roller coaster that is this series. The events of the first book lead directly up to this one, making reading in order imperative to fully understanding the plot and appreciating all of the characters. The reader gets to see old characters again and make friends with brand new ones, and the romance gets a bit of a twist thrown in, reminiscent of how Sarah J. Maas likes to toy with us. If you love her romance twists, you'll love this series. Everything was fairly straight forward in the first book, but in this book lines between enemy and friend blur. Who you think would be the strong one is in fact weak, and who you think is an enemy could actually be the savior. While the pacing was a bit faster than what I prefer, I really appreciated how much the author packed into this book and allowed us to experience so much without it feeling overwhelming. It really was a tale of chasing war, confronting the realities of it, and learning what it means to be the one people look to when hard decisions must be made.
Half-fae Grace, now Lady Grace Richardson Faelie, is struggling to fit in with a world that finds her at time a curiosity and others an abomination. With a stepbrother who hates her, a stepmother who is threatened by her existence, and a stepsister as her only ally in the house besides her father, things are looking precarious for her future. When she is given a magic tutor to teach her how to utilize her newfound magic, she realizes that her differences may be even greater than anyone expected, and she must continue to keep secrets in order to survive. Knowing there is a conspiracy among the other fae houses, she tries desperately to warn of impending disaster, but it all comes to a head when inevitable war unfolds. Soon she is placed in a difficult position of power, where she must make allies, determine who her real enemies are, and test loyalties she thought would remain strong.
The burden put on Grace in this book was so strongly felt by the reader, which deserves a huge round of applause for the writer. I was stressed for her, my heart broke when her heart broke, and I genuinely felt her relief when she found solace in the most unlikely of places. While I did see some similarities in this book with popular fae stories that I didn't see in the first book, Cady Hammer made the book her own with the many unique characters and a plot that twisted and turned until the last page. There are two love interests that pop up in this book, making a minor love triangle evident. However, there were very clear lines drawn that made it less angsty, and I liked that. Oftentimes love triangles are tedious and predictable, but in this case I found myself wondering what would come of it. And I was still wondering even after I finished the book (though I was thrilled to see our heroine stayed strong when she could have given in). Chasing War does end on a cliffhanger again, which is difficult for me as a reader, but as someone who thrives on thinking about the "what ifs" in life, I love the suspense...I just sometimes wish I could wait until the whole series is out before I torture myself one book at a time.
Eager for the third book! Still highly recommend reading the first two books in the meantime while you wait - you'll be so glad you did.
**I received a free copy from the author and this is my honest review.**
Cady has done it again! I have been waiting for this book for what actually feel like forever! Chasing War sent me on a roller coaster of feelings. We watch as Grace learns how to be Fae and her new fate in the world. I'm not going to lie, the way she treats Aiden at the end of the book seriously makes me mad because Aiden deserves the entire world. I also feel like he is going to do to do something bad, but I feel that way about every single person. Being a reader has made me lose all trust with characters because someone has to turn their back on you. Another amazing book written by the beautiful Cady Hammer! From the cover to the last page, this series still has me hooked. Cady keeps writing books that become some of my favorites. I haven't read too many books this year that have kept me wanting to read, but Chasing War is one of them. This was a very good sequel, and I can't wait to see what happens next! 2021 has been a worse year for me than 2020, and this book was such a great escape from all of the issues and problems I have been facing this past year. I cannot thank Cady enough for giving me a copy of Chasing War and letting me escape for a while.I'm always shocked when I remember Cady is still a new author in her frist series because her books are so well written. Her stories send you on the adventure of a lifetime and takes you places that you can only dream of. Chasing War is no expectation.
In Chasing War, I got a chance to see Grace work her way into leadership. On the way up, she crosses paths with fellow royals who don't think she belongs in the kingdom. With her new magical abilities, and being the most important factor to an ancient prophecy, though, Grace proves her worth!
But there are dark forces coming for her, and I don't know if she's ready to take them on! 🥺
