Geela, Evil Sorceress at Large #2

The Harrowing Homecoming of Geela, Evil Sorceress at Large

Rate this book
Dark Sorceress Ja’Eel Scilatia, Mistress of Void and Lightning, needs to keep a low profile.

This time, the two are off to the Celestial City - dark, dangerous, and filled to the brim with all the corruption, cults, and illicit noodle trade you could ever hope for. The secrets to Darkos’s void roots are hidden somewhere in its shadowed depths. Probably.

It was supposed to be a quick in-and-out visit. They just need to sniff out the link to Darkos’s family while dodging any of Geela’s old cultist pals. But as unexpected clues begin to tie together Darkos’s family past with some of Geela’s more regrettable history, the trip gets decidedly more complicated. And when she learns some long-forgotten prophecies might not be so forgotten, the race is on.

All this while keeping Darkos’s identity as a void spawn secret to everyone, himself included. Musn’t forget that.

We start with the rapid and interesting conclusion of Geela and Darkos finding the rest of the villages housing the cultist groups. Interestingly enough, each town has the name Sunny in it which I’m sure is a clue to something but could also just be an odd coincidence. Now that those are out of the way, they need to infiltrate Celestial City for more answers. Once inside the city, they watch the Silver Guard perform a drug bust of a sparkle noodle operation. Geela is surprised to see someone she knows and decides to add a minion to her growing party. Once she and Darkos have fake identities, Geela starts to make appointments and contacts for the information she needs to gather. While visiting the site of one of her more infamous exploits, she is met by someone related to the exploit and brings up past events she rather not deal with. Unfortunately, the more she tries to gather information about Darkos’s situation, which she is trying to keep him in the dark about, the more the past is coming to be a problem.

Geela is trying to investigate how to save Darkos and figure out why he is different without tipping him off about the problem. She promised his mother but more importantly she doesn’t want him to have another existential crisis. This unfortunately causes a slight rift between them. Darkos is aware of the rift but chalks it up to her dealing with some of the things from her past. But while he is on his sparkle noodle trip (not that I am advocating drug use or find it hilarious but man was that an interesting chapter to read) he realizes that things aren’t quite adding up and makes a few self discoveries. They finally communicate and watching them work together is such a treat. You can see how Darkos’s optimism is making Geela a little less jaded and how Geela is making Darkos embrace some of his chaos a bit more. I love the dynamic between the 2 of them and look forward to the next installment.

A Harrowing Honoration of Geela, Evil Sorceress at Large

Like the first book, you are essentially getting more of the same in this sequel. The misadventures, the dark history of Geela across the Celestial Academy, the oddly uncanny dynamics between Geela and Darkos, and even the return of a few characters brought up in the first book. It was nice to know that the Celestial City was at least referenced in the first book, since this location is the focal point of this story here.

You will be learning much more about Darkos himself in this one, which was refreshing to find out. His arc also develops quite a bit in this one, after the ramifications of the first book, so I'm starting to get more invested in him as a character. Interestingly, the side characters stand out as well (especially the one Jane Arlington out of potentially thousands of others).

This was also a great read.

While in the first book Geela and Darkos traveled across different lands, this time they're in the massive Celestial City. That doesn't mean things will be easier. Between the cult, church, and Geela's looming past this is definitely a wonderful sequel to an already amazing story. Sprinkle in noodles and an absentminded grunt and you have an adventure you don't want to miss.

Fun fun dark and light

I hope on one of the covers there some depiction of the nose. I keep being mentally bothered by my imagination. I totally identify with Darko with the personal confusion with women. Nice mystery.
