Strands of blonde hair escape from beneath the sheet and catch the dawn light creeping through the window. Silence falls as the fabric is drawn back to reveal the body of a young girl, her hands folded on her chest, her long lashes resting on her cold, pale cheeks.
When Detective Casey White finds the body of a teenager perfectly preserved in salt in an abandoned beach vacation home, her heart shatters. Tina Somners has been missing since she set off to meet her friends for spring break. With her own daughter missing too, Casey knows how devastated the girl’s parents will be at this tragic end to their search.
Pushing her pain aside, Casey delves into old files and gets her first lead: years ago, a man murdered his wife and left her the same way. But he’s been locked up in prison all this time…
Interviewing him, Casey is certain the now frail and elderly prisoner couldn’t have hurt Tina himself. But is he somehow pulling strings from behind bars?
Then another perfectly preserved body is found, a threatening note addressed to Casey herself clutched in the girl’s hand. Running out of time and leads, Casey is hit with a realization that turns her blood to ice: her own daughter could be next…
An absolutely unputdownable read that will have you reading late into the night and gasping at the shocking twists. Perfect for fans of Kendra Elliot, Robert Dugoni and Melinda Leigh.
B.R. Spangler is a USA TODAY Bestselling Author of Mysteries and Crime Thrillers.
A resident of Virginia with a wonderful family, including five cats, two birds and a lizard. During the day, the hours are filled with engineering work. Off hours, time is spent writing, editing, and thinking up the next great story.

This is as a crazy good story. I loved it and it was hard to put down. I read this out of order but it was okay. Casey finds the body of a dead teenage girl. Then while searching the abandoned house, she finds a mummified body. They end up finding more but you get drawn into two mysteries. A serial killer who mummifies body's and the death of a teenage girl. The poem the dead girl wrote is stunningly beautiful. Its called mud born. Really haunting. I loved it and her death is sad, and exposes hate, class differences, and teenage jealousy and mean girls. It was tragic. And the mystery of the mummified women is as intriguing as it is sad. I definitely will be reading more of this author for sure.
Detective Casey White is truly saddened to have discovered the body of a teen girl during her most recent case. However, as other police are searching the house where the body was found, they discover another body, one that is nearly perfectly preserved.
While Casey works hard at solving the current cases, she cannot help but look closely at every female body found or reported missing - as it has been several years since her own daughter has gone missing. Will one of these found be the one to truly break her heart?
Beyond that concern that is never far from her mind, Casey discovers a note addressed to her in the hand of one of the bodies that have been found. This note is addressed to Casey herself. However, this brings older cases to mind, but that person of interest is old and frail - and is behind bars. There must be a connection, but what is it?
Casey has a bit to prove with these cases. She was recently injured and has just returned from leave. She is pleased to have been assigned the cases, even with the sadnes and danger they evoke. Casey has strong allies. One is Jericho Flynn, a Marine Patrol officer and the love of her life. Another is Dr. Swales, the medical examiner. Both are instrumental in the investigation and prove to be strong anchors for Casey. There is another member to her team and I cannot wait to see how that character arc grows within the series.
There is a likely suspect as the investigation progresses. But things are not always as they seem. Casey plows on as best she can to eliminate any possible suspects while hoping for no more bodies to be found. With twists and turns and constant danger, plus the overwhelming sadness regarding Casey's daughter Hannah who was abducted at a very young age, The Crying House is a compelling read, one filled with intensity so vivid that it was literally impossible to put down.
Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.
About The Crying House: Strands of blonde hair escape from beneath the sheet and catch the dawn light creeping through the window.
Her parents will be inconsolable at this tragic end to their search.
Determined to find justice for this sweet girl who was looking forward to a summer full of laughter, Casey delves into old case files and gets her first lead: years ago, a man murdered his wife, totally covering her body in salt. But he’s been locked up in prison all this time.
Casey is racing to interview him when another perfectly preserved body is found just down the beach from the first crime scene. A cryptic, unfinished note is clutched in the girl’s hand. Are the bodies being kept this way so the killer can pass on a message?
Certain that there’s more significance to the salt than just preservation, Casey tracks down a man Tina’s friends say they saw watching them on the beach—and unlocks a terrible secret. But then a final threatening message arrives, addressed to Casey herself. Can she bring this twisted monster to justice before more young lives are destroyed forever?
An absolutely unputdownable read that will have you reading late into the night and gasping at the shocking twists. Perfect for fans of Kendra Elliot, Robert Dugoni and Melinda Leigh.
My Thoughts: I enjoyed this fourth book, The Crying House, as much as the first three in the series. Casey White is a great detective, being a determined, smart, and compassionate woman, though she carries emotional baggage. The other characters are also well created and developed, especially ex-sheriff, trustworthy and amiable Jericho Flynn. Casey and Jericho's interactions were interesting to read as they set about looking for someone "mummifying" bodies. Set in Outer Banks, North Carolina the plot pacing was frenetic with plenty of action, and there was certainly no room for tedium or boredom. The story was fascinating and I revelled in the problematical investigation. Enthralling to the very end, I shall be watching out for the next in the series and I'm immensely keen to see where the talented B.R. Spangler takes Detective Casey White next. A highly entertaining and absorbing police procedural which I recommend without any hesitation.
Disclosure: Thank you to Bookouture via Netgalley for providing a digital ARC of The Crying House by B.R. Spangler for review. All opinions expressed in this review are my own.
The Crying House is the fourth instalment in the Detective Casey White series set in the Outer Banks, North Carolina. Casey is back at work after a period of enforced leave thanks to a work-related injury, and she is now raring to go. One morning she heads out for a five-mile run to help her get physically fit and strong again, and along the beach she discovers empty cans and bottles - evidence that a late-night party had recently taken place. Her attention is then drawn to a pink jacket near some abandoned houses that had been hung neatly and hadn't just landed there by chance. She decides to further investigate and finds that on the third piling to the left of the jacket, stray hairs are dangling loose, anchored in the wood. And beneath them, a thick swath of blood. The hairs are nestled between splinters and on the ends is tissue, the hairs having clearly been ripped from someone's scalp. Taking a look inside the house, she finds the body of a local high school student on the first floor who has a gash on her head. Realising it is a serious crime scene she combs the rest of the dilapidated home once Doctor Swales and her boyfriend Marine Patrol major Jericho Flynn arrive to help process the scene.
To their horror they discover another body on the third floor; this time a woman who appears to have been mummified using salt and has been positioned in a ritualistic fashion. Luckily, the kids who have been hanging out in and around the house do not appear to have ventured onto the top floor as the stairs are rotting and it is quite unsafe. Facing east to west, the body is pale and waxy and has been preserved by highly concentrated salt. It isn't long before they search the other derelict houses along the beach and find more bodies. The modus operandi implies the mummified murders were carried out by the same perpetrator, so the team must work quickly and efficiently knowing they have a serial killer in their midst. This is a compulsive and enthralling addition to the series with two murder cases running concurrent to one another. Both are equally gripping, and Spangler provides several different suspects in the chase to find those responsible. There are twists, turns and surprises throughout and we are made to wonder whether Casey's daughter, Hannah, who was abducted aged 3 is one of the victims. All in all, a gritty, compelling and suspenseful read. Highly recommended.
I am really love these stories. I can't help but get lost in whatever case Casey is working. I'm not going to lie. This one was rough because most of the victims were so young, and the killer went after Tracy! I'm so glad they were able to save her because damn her death would have been rough. Casey has decided to give up her nightly search for Hannah. I won't lie, though. The thought of Tracy being Casey's daughter makes me so happy. However, I just can't see that being possible. The blood type has to be a coincidence. Right?!

I would like to thank Netgalley and Bookouture for an advance copy of The Crying House, the fourth novel to feature Detective Casey White, set in the Outer Banks, North Carolina.
Casey is out running when she spots a pink jacket in an abandoned house. Further investigation reveals the dead body of a teenager and a full search of the location reveals a second body, this one mummified by salt. Certain things about the second body leads the team to search more abandoned houses and soon they realise that they are looking for a serial killer.
I enjoyed The Crying House, which covers two concurrent and very different murder enquiries. The contrast between them adds a wider perspective on murder investigation with different approaches for each. It was also pleasant to see a different subplot than the usual Casey hunting her daughter, Hanna, who was abducted as a toddler, although the final sentences in the novel throw a curveball into that mix. I don’t know whether to be excited about that development or fed up that the thread will continue.
I was impressed by the way the author keeps both plot lines interesting and simmering with strategic reveals and developments. The first body should technically be the easier one to solve as it happened after an eventful party, but nothing is as it seems and there’s a lot of teenage hormones and rage to navigate. It’s not particularly deep, but it’s not simple either. The mummified corpse case is more problematic as stranger murders always are and yet it is the first one solved. Some serendipity helps it along.
I like Casey White in this novel. She seems more mellow and less impetuous. It means that the novel feels less dramatic, but still entertaining and it held my attention throughout.
The Crying House is a good read that I have no hesitation in recommending.
I think everybody who has children knows they are not always sweet little angels, but even if they are behaving some parents still feel like they are not good enough and punishment is in order. Unfortunately it’s not the kind of punishment where the child is not allowed to play his favorite game or watch his favorite tv show. No, here it’s worse, much, much worse. One day it might blow up in your face and lives will be ruined..
Detective Casey and her team are dealing with not one but two cases at the same time. One seems rather easy to solve, until isn’t. Was it murder or an accident? Is the driving force behind it the green eyed monster or hate pure and simple? The second one makes the whole team gasp when a victim is discovered. They have never seen this before and the killer keeps them occupied. He is very clever, does not give them any useful clues to work with. He does leave something behind, but nobody seems to be able to decipher it at first.
It’s true you cannot judge a book by its cover, but the same thing goes for people. It’s not always the loudest or the most annoying one that is behind crimes. Sometimes it’s the most kind and polite one who is the most damaged and does the most horrible things…
This is another very enjoyable book in a great series. 5 stars
The Crying House is a solid, extremely detailed and descriptive police procedural. That slowly drew me in thanks to a mummified body and the discovery of a dead teenager in an abandoned house by detective Casey White.
And with two cases that seemingly aren't linked, more abandoned houses to search and the real possibility of a serial killer on the loose, this turned out to be a gripping read with characters that certainly piqued my interest.
Would recommend.
**I was kindly provided with an ARC via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review**
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for this read. After a disappointing ending in book 3, book 4 hit it out of the park. Beginning a few months after the end of the previous book Casey and team are on the hunt for a serial killer. The growth in Casey that was lost in book 3, was found again in this book. Full of twists and turns, this was a great book that was non-stop till the end. The end twist is something I’d felt forshadowed in the previous book. Can’t wait for the next one in this series.
This was an absolutely brilliant story, so well written, fast paced and full of twists. I was thoroughly engrossed and once I started I just had to finish it. A book to read in one breath taking gulp. Make sure you have finished all you other chores before you start this one - you will not be able to put it down.
Detective Casey White is regaining her fitness after being injured when she spots an abandoned jacket on her run. She investigates the area and finds the body of a teenager. Whilst looking for clues she discovers a mummified body: is there a connection between the victims? The Crying House is the fourth book to feature Casey, her lover Jericho and the rest of their law enforcement team. I have previously reviewed two of the earlier books in the series The Innocent Girls and Saltwater Graves. There are references to events in previous books but no major spoilers. There are two main threads to this book. Firstly is the first murder to be discovered. A teenage girl who was having significant issues at school as revealed by her diary. Could a fight over a boy have got out of hand? The second set of murder victims have been mummified with salt and there could be a connection to an old case. The team have the tricky task of identifying the victims as well as solving their murders. The majority of the book is written from Casey's first person perspective but there are a few chapters from other characters' third person viewpoints. Some of the forensic details are a little grisly but the characters' emotional response directs the feelings of the reader. I also felt surprisingly emotional about Dr Swales' circumstances as she feels weary at all she has seen and her health suffers in this book. Casey and Jericho's relationship takes a back seat in this book complared the previous plots, although they do decide to move in together. The thread of Casey's missing daughter trails through all of the books but only had brief mentions in this one. However, there is a major cliffhanger at the end and I can't wait for the next book! The Crying House is an engaging police and crime thriller
I received a free ARC e-book copy of ‘The Crying House’ by B.R. Spangler from @Bookouture through NetGalley in return for my honest review. I must be truthful I hadn’t heard of this author before, but I am always on the look out for new crime/thriller writers to read. I saw a post on twitter from @Bookoture saying this book was on NetGalley to request and I just had to submit a request.
This is the fourth book in the Detective Casey White Series, although there is no reason why this can’t be read as a standalone book. This title is due to be released 3rd August 2021.
Casey is on her morning run and discovers a dead teenage girl in one of the abandoned homes in Outer Banks, North Carolina.
After further investigation another body is found in the same building but this one has been ‘mummified’, with a cryptic note left in their hand.
Two cases are opened, and Casey returns to work fulltime to help in the investigation. More ‘Mummified’ bodies are found, and Casey must solve the mystery behind the case to find the serial killer.
There is a lot of tension throughout as the mystery unfolds and you are on the edge of your seat the whole time.
I really enjoyed this book and I felt part of the team, working through and solving the clues with them. There is so much to the story and many backgrounds of the characters I still want to explore through reading this series. I will have to read the first three in the series and any more in the future.
Overall, an exciting, dark, shocking thriller that leaves you wanting more. A must read for any crime/thriller reader.
Detective Casey White is not the type of woman who enjoys doing nothing. Even after serious injury and being told to gradually increase what she does each day she still has to prove everyone wrong. Finishing her first successful five mile run since her her enforced layoff Casey finds evidence of a late night party at an abandoned beach house never guessing it will lead to investigations into an unexplained death and a possible serial killer.
With her place in her team now compromised Casey has to share the lead with Detective Cheryl Smithson someone she would rather disregard totally. Gradually however, as the horrific nature of the two cases are realised, the detectives know they have to work together to discover the reasons behind the killings. Racing against the clock and the real threat of civil unrest they know there is every chance of more deaths becoming their reality.
This is the fourth Casey White novel and although the author has come up with an absolutely horrific means of killing his victims it is also a slower more measured look at Casey’s life. She is still searching for her lost child but B R Spangler has shown his main protagonist in a way that gives the reader hope for her future. Of course, the rug could be pulled at any moment!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, the crimes were original and the team working with Casey are gel solidly now, with all of them having vital parts to play. There is mention of previous cases as well as a cliffhanger of sorts at the end and I am delighted for the chance to enjoy this excellent series at least one more time .
I was able to read an advanced copy of this book thanks to NetGalley
You'll Never Look At Ye Olden Ways The Same Again. This was my first book from Spangler, and is the 4th book in this particular series. It picks up seemingly some period of time after the events of Book 3, and immediately spoils some of the ending there. So if you have particular cares about such... start at Book 1 here and work your way here. As a police procedural / murder mystery of the book type series, this one actually works quite well and features a technique (used in a variety of ways) that will both creep you out and cause you to think twice about certain olden ways of doing certain things. What were y'all *really* up to, humanity of old???? Several different deaths drive the action here, and there is indeed quite a bit of action along with the mystery, including a pulse pounding race to... well, not quite the finale, but the effective end (+ some exposition) of that particular thread. And then another bit of action to resolve the other main thread before ending on a series explosion big enough that you're going to want the next book in your hands immediately. Very much recommended.
While running detective Casey finds the lifeless body of a teenage girl in an abandoned house. When she investigates the house further, she finds another shocking discovery. She finds a mummified body. Two bodies at the same crime scene. The question is…are these 2 murders connected?
This book surprised me in a good way.. The prologue and the first chapter blew me away. You can speak of a good start! This is the fourth book in the Detective Casey White series. I didn’t read the first 3 books, but I’ll definitely do that. I love the writing style and it reads easy. And an extra bonus for the short chapters! The murder investigations had some good plot twists that I didn’t see coming
This book rediscovered my love for thrillers. When I was a teenager I read a lot of thrillers from my Belgian authors. From know on I’ll read more trillers again.
Thank you NetGalley and Boukoutre for providing met with a copy of this Arc. All opinions are my own.
Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley, too For this fantastic read, here’s my honest review.
Detective Casey White is making a steady recovery When whilst out running she makes a shocking discovery. In a remote locations she finds the body of a teen Was she killed, why is she there, what does it mean?
A search of the location by her police teams The remains of a young girl, mummified it seems. There’s a note, too, baffling and weird And then more bodies are found, as she’d feared.
With two murder enquiries running at the same time Will Casey and her team be able to solve the crime? It is a story full of twists, turns and mystery As well as links to Ancient Egyptian history!
A fascinating 5* read, with great characters who Keep you turning the pages to discover what they do. I’m loving reading this series and can’t wait to discover More about Tracy and who is her mother!
I really enjoy this author & this series but a couple things here that just drive me a little nuts. First, there are SEVERAL other synonyms for “except” that can be used instead of “save”. I’ve read that word countless times between these books. Also, the word “middle” in reference to stomach, midsection, etc. I get that authors have a style & favorite phrases but I may end up taking a break from these Detective Casey books so I can give my brain a bit of a break.
Also - why does Casey keep going into places by herself after bein hurt time & time again? Helloooo does she not see a trend here that she may need to wait for back up or just simply bring someone with her when she has a hunch?
Last also - Dr. Swales mentioned in the first book, “where lost girls go”, that basically, she’s never been all that busy in the morgue in all her time in the Outer Banks. So what, all of a sudden there are serial killers n shit since Casey moved there? Just odd I guess.
Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher and author for this ARC.
This is a great addition to the series and a book I thoroughly enjoyed. Casey finds a body in an abandoned house whilst out running and when the house is fully searched a mummified body is found. Are the murders connected? I loved the two separate plot lines here, the author wove them both into the story and the book moved from past to present so easily. I found this to be a fast paced, thrilling read with twist after twist and one that had me desperate to continue reading to see what came next, especially towards the end. I wrongly guessed who the murderer was. Casey’s ongoing search for her missing daughter took a back seat here, with a hint of more with that in the next book. Overall a great read and one I would recommend. Will definitely read the next book in series.
i so love this series .Casey is still on leave with the loss of her baby and injury her relationship with Jericho is stronger than ever she still looks for her daughter ,Casey is out on an early morning run and she spots a pink coat on a post next to an old derelict house she decides to go in the house and finds the body of a young girl on the 1st floor , she rings DR swales and contacts her team . Jericho and Casey go to check the rest of the house as youngsters are having party s there but they not been on top floor as stairs not safe when they get to the top of house they find a body wrapped up as a mummy ,so they decide to check all the derelict houses they find more bodies of young women wrapped up as mummy s so they have to find out who these missing girls are and who the killer is its very addictive so recommend
This book took me longer to get into. My interest wasn't fully sparked until after 50% through, which was disappointing, considering the last book had me hooked by the second or third chapter. The beginning was sluggish, and if I read "answering a question with a question" one more time, I would have been willing to DNF on that alone. I don't know what it was, but something about this book just didn't mesh very well. I'm hoping the next book is more interesting - especially now that, at the very end, Casey was wondering something that nagged at me in book 2, but really hit me in book 3. Who and where is Hannah?

Detective Casey White is recovering from a work related incident and trying to regain her strength. While running along the beach early one morning, she discovers a dead girl in an abandoned house. Casey, her team and her boyfriend Marine Patrol member Jericho, find a second dead girl on another floor of the house. This body has been mummified with salt, as the Egyptians used to. Soon they discover several more dead girls, all mummified, and all had been reported as missing. Racing to find who is responsible, Casey wonders if they will find her long ago kidnapped daughter among the bodies
I was lucky enough to be an early reader of this book. While this is book 4 in the Detective Casey White series, there is enough background provided in the current read to make it all make sense. I do recommend going back and reading the prior books just for the enjoyment of it. Spangler writes a riveting, fast-paced story while providing wonderful detail and development of characters. The book is hard to put down and I am really looking forward to the next one! Spangler just keeps getting better and I can’t wait to see what comes next for this cast of characters!
Yes, this book has it all. It starts off with Casey working to get back in shape to return to work…when she discovers a body. Who killed and dumped the teen amidst abandoned houses? This leads to an even more gruesome discovery…mummified bodies inside one of the houses, with riddles in their grips. Bodies rack up but it seems the team can’t catch a break…until they do. Will this end well for the team? Very intriguing story. Let’s not forget the sub plot of Casey’s search for her missing daughter! Looking forward to the next book.
The Crying House: An absolutely nails biting mystery and suspense thriller (Detective Casey White Bo
B. R. Spangler has done it again it the fourth of her series. It is a thriller and some. She arrive early to work and off and running. She started with a new death. Her team was surprised to see her back so early but that is Casey. She and the team start working on two exciting cases. The support staff is truly wonderful. The book is a non-stop.thrill so read and find out. I'm ready for the next one.
This is the fourth book to feature Detective Casey White, set in the Outer Banks in North Carolina. It's another good, solid read with excellent characterisation and an interesting plot filled with twists and tension. There is great attention to detail and two cases which seem linked to a serial killer. Although book 4, it can be read as a stand alone and I highly recommend the series. Thanks to Net Galley for my ARC.
It is raining dead girls and a recovering Detective Casey White and her beau, Marine Patrol officer Jericho, must solve the mystery of these strange murders. This is the first time I am reading this author and I was not disappointed. The plot is rich in mystery and suspense. The conflicts are well woven into the narrative of the story and the setting for this mystery/thriller is spot on. Did I mention there is a 'what-if'" in the mix? Five worthy stars.
Another fantastic book in the Detective Casey White series! Casey is on the hunt for a killer who is murdering young teenage girls and mummifying their bodies....let's just say gory! This book was creepy and thrilling at the same time. One of my favorite series the author keeps you very captivated from the very first pages. Love this series and this book! Highly recommend if your looking for a great thriller with the creep factor.
The Crying House is the fourth instalment in the Detective Casey White series. This is the first book that I have read in this series and I guess to get the full in-depth history reading the others would be an advantage but it didn't stop my enjoyment of this addition.
Casey and her team are tasked with investigating two concurrent and very different murder enquiries.
A wonderful well developed cast of characters with a detailed story and rich plot that has been well researched.
