The MC makes weird decisions that I think limit the plot because it's trying to avoid a maturity level akin to Goblin Slayer.

This is the second book in the Otherworlder series and this one finds Souya and his group of adventurers deciding to take on a new enemy. There is a terrifying beast in the tower called the Dragonoise and they decide to go after it. However, will the group be the same after the battle is all said and done? I know, but you'll have to read to find out. It was another fun read, not on the level as several other light novel series but fun nonetheless.

This second volume of the Otherworlder Light Novel Series is over 200+ pages and five chapters. It seems the author is out of fresh ideas, the main plot arc to reach the 56 floor of the TowerDungeon and gain the minerals, plants and artifacts of this alternate reality world is around the 11th floor. Illustrations in this light novel series look undone, half-done, unfinished.
Main Character Souya, is convened to the Castle to solve a Thiamine deficiency of the King of Remlia, in exchange he and his retinue receive nothing but new female harem candidates. Tutu, Beltriche, Lanceil, Ea, and Lana his supposed fake wife. Even the Artificial Intelligence units are acting "funny" around Souya.
In the first volume, the first exploratory team was ostracized for mingling with the beast-folk, depravity, corruption, etc. and this is why in their last chance they changed the profile of the team members sent. The problem is that all but Souya were destroyed in the teleportation circle. But Souya is not necessarily leaving a good impression of the humans in this new world. He's already involved with a half a dozen girls, fights and constantly gets into trouble in this world, etc.
This light novel series is filled with food eating, food making and recipes. If you do not like cooking or eating as a filler of a Light novel series, then this series is not for you. Souya was supposed to be a military specialist but has no martial arts abilities and spends most of his time taking care of his harem and cooking for everyone. I suppose because the main plot arc is somewhat linear to achieve (reach the 56 floor, get the materials required back to Earth) Author fills this light novel with unneeded and not important information and stories. All of Souya's adventure team have geopolitical problems with the Kingdom and in this alternate reality world.
In the afterword, this author writes: "With this in my background, I know painfully well how unforgiving the world and reality can be. That’s why I believe and try to ensure there must
always be an equal price to pay for the “miracles” that occur in this novel. And yet, would you not agree that adding a realistic dash of “hard truth” to a fictional fantasy makes it all the more delicious? Most of the currently popular series string one lucky miracle after another, but people soon lose interest in stories where everything always turns out okay."
If the readers wanted "reality" they have their lives, their friends, the news, organized crime, social media, I would say light novel series and fiction in general is an "escape" to reality. If this irrational and nonsensical author believes that his light novel series will be better the closer to "our reality" it is, I hope that "Our reality" gives him another nuclear accident, tsunami, earthquake, mugging, blackmail, ransomware, etc. so that when he needs his part of reality, he will be so sick of "reality" as it is today, that he will never seek reality again. Reality writing is called non-fiction, the closer to reality the writers are, the more of a historic or journalistic style is used for their work. Someone ask this author, if they can, how many positive news pieces he has read in the last year? How many miracles has he eye-witnessed in his entire life? None? He can easily leave miracles and over powered character out of his light novel series, but what does that have to do with reality? Are isekais and harems real? Ah, then author only wants reality when it suits his whims and prejudices. it is not very mature or serious, but then again it's a light novel series. What can a reader expect from light novels? Not much right? And yet there are great writers and inspirational series. Not this one, not even close.

The first half of the book repeated the excesses of the first book. I almost put it down. However, the second half left the food porn and harem building behind and focused on the complicated politics, corruption, and fascinating lore of this world. The dungeon party didn’t waltz through their ordeals. They had to fight and struggle to win. This made for excellent reading.

I’d rate the story higher except the main elf, who is now the MC’s wife, is a manikin. She sits idly by when every woman in the story makes time with her husband, including her sister, but only expresses jealousy when other women cook better than she can. There was plenty of kissing, but none of it with the main characters who default to a puppy love awkwardness when they are together since they are married in name only. The harem aspect of this series is juvenile and drags the story down for me.

The Otherworlder 2 is an odd mix. It has some very good parts, funny, well-developed interesting characters and a rather unique world that feels alive outside the MC. Especially the later part, the true heart of the story so to speak, had me hooked. I do think a little bit too much time is spend on slice-of-life compared to the meat of the story even if it is a funny read. It also clashes a bit. The slice-of-life is light hearted, the main story itself is more akin to horror/thriller with all those literal dark curses (affecting mind and body of friends and the MC), betrayals and corrupt politics. Still, well told, intriguing and I am looking forward to were things are going.
