Both my daughter and I thought this kinda dragged and hit a sophomore slump. The “odd couple” vibe has gotten old, so Stanton throws in a “road trip” vibe while our protagonists and cartoons run from a mysterious woman. Why? I don’t know. Who is she? Well, you’d think we’d know after 200 pages. But nope, cliff hanger. Meanwhile everyone bickers and is somehow incredibly boring. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the father, a cartoonist, is unable to come up ideas for his comic… Guess it’s time for something new, indeed.

Run, Odds, Run by Matt Stanton is the second book in *The Odds* graphic novel series. When a scary-looking woman turns up at Kip's front door looking for the Odds, Kip decides there's only one sensible solution: convince her dad they all need to go on the run.

This was another fun instalment in the series. Matt Stanton does humour really well, and there were several moments that genuinely made me giggle. I particularly enjoyed the image of Kip, her dad and the entire collection of Odds piling into the minivan he's bought specifically because he now needs to transport all of them around.

The Odds themselves continue to be entertaining because they each have such distinct personalities, but this book also adds more depth to the idea behind them. Kip's dad suggests that perhaps the Odds aren't simply random characters who have appeared in her life, but represent different parts of Kip herself.

That becomes particularly clever when Kip realises that continually running away isn't going to solve anything and she needs to confront what's frightening her. The intimidating woman pursuing them turns out to be another Odd — one representing Kip's fears.

I really liked the way this added another layer to the story. *Run, Odds, Run* is humorous, light and joyful, but there's genuine meaning and depth embedded within that. The idea of confronting rather than continually running from our fears is handled in a way that feels completely at home alongside the humour rather than weighing the story down.

I enjoyed this slightly less than the first book, but only just. Another clever, funny and thoughtful instalment in the series.

I'm on a kids graphic novel kick apparently.
This is the second in a series and I have not yet read the first one. But it's cute, fun, and I like that it addresses different emotions and personality traits.

Every page is a delight. The Odds have gone crazy; Kip and her Dad are overwhelmed.
This is a great book to help any young child gain self-insight into emotions and personality.
