I am a huge fan of Elin Peer, this new book resulting from the collaboration with her daughter Pearl has left me breathless. While her other projects may be reserved for a more mature audience, this one is in the young adult category, while retaining the typical depth of these artists. It is a wonderful book that can be read and enjoyed by people of all ages. Represents the feelings and challenges that many of us are facing or have faced in our teens, letting us know we weren't alone facing problems, hormonal turmoils and too strong and new emotions, making you feel like you can always survive and get stronger if only you believe in yourself and never back down. They show that you are not an alien in this world, alone in a complex Universe, but you will find that you can always find kindred spirits who can understand you and cheer for you, even if you can't see them, if you truly open your heart and feel what's around you. Covering soulful and spiritual topics, this book is inspiring and contains lessons of profound meaning. A sweet story that sings to your heart. I recommend it without a doubt.
I totally understand this story about old souls and Karma. I know I have been here many times. The bullying from the kids at Emma’s school resonated with me as I was bullied only in school. When out of school those same kids treated me as a friend but they were not around any of the other kids from school. Talk about mixed signals for a teenager. Emma and Ty are great at dealing with bullying, they develop trust, friendship, and love. Even Karma had to fix her errors. You get so tired of the same old thing happening on earth all the time that you get overzealous in teaching a lesson. Even Karma has lessons to be learned. Hilarious quotes, a Joy Wall, teenage emotions that range from love to suicide. This book covers a range of emotions and how teenagers deal with these super-charged emotions. The rewards from these challenges in this book need to be done every day worldwide. We need people to understand to be compassionate, to help each other out, and to make this place a better world. Elin and Pearl have started on a journey that hopefully brings awareness to young people letting them know that they are not alone. There is no shame in asking for help. I would like to see a series of books for adults based on the same theme for them to have various challenges in their lives and how to overcome the problems they face in their everyday lives.
So many quotes in this book that are hilarious , such as “Farts are energy too”, “so you think all people have mean thoughts about you?”, are among a few of the funny ones. Love the fact that Emma has a “Joy Wall” in her room with sayings that typical teens would post. The best one, You’re not allowed to look away before you give yourself a compliment. This book made me picture myself back at my old high school and how to this day you can imagine the complex thoughts of teenagers and what they are going through. Ridicule, Harassment, Bullying that can drive these individuals to do the unthinkable. Intervention is the key. Karma does just that before Emma can do the unthinkable. This book paints a picture of emotions that are controlled and some that are not. Chaos breaks out between Kate and Emma who have a hate for each other until it is discovered why. Kate is injured and has to forgo the fact that she can no longer place basketball. Emma stands her ground. The book will detail exactly what happens. This book is indeed a great read for all ages to read. It puts an emphasis on what I believe is the mental state of everyone involved and no matter who you turn to , seek help that is neededno matter what. Friends, family, spirit guides and others that can help a person deal with the mind set that may not be healthy. I was saddened for the end and kept wanting and waiting for more. We know Emma goes back to where she was once, but will not mention any more details. I am anticipating Gaia’s book already.
Elin Peer writes her first YA book with her young daughter, Pearl. and what an opening salvo for this series! It tells the story of Karma being taken to task by her fellow ancient souls, Gaia and Miracle for her big overplay of power on Emma, bringing her to the brink of suicide. The result of the intervention is the decision that Karma (that 'bitch') needs a lesson in empathy and compassion herself in Emma's body to fix what she allowed to happen while Emma is entertained by her Grandma and her spiritual guides. The story of Karma, using her great wisdom, but none of her powers as she interacts with mean girls, hormonal guys, too busy parents, and teachers disrespectful of their students while feeling Emma's loneliness and the butterflies of love for a week makes a fantastic read. All who dip into this book will be reminded of 'Service Before Self' and the Jesuit academies' 'Men for Others' mottos. We're reminded of the Golden Rule to treat others as we wish to be treated! Highly recommended!
My favorite author list has got one more awesome writer on it!
When work gets in the way of reading, then I'm not a fan! But, Karma's Return is so worth the wait! And once you get started with it, you're caught! Really caught! Even here now that it's over, it's going to play in my mind for a long time! I would like much more! What a wonderful story Elin and Pearl have written together! Great job! I want a lot more of that thank you! I have always had a belief in a little more than what we all see, and even though the book is fictional, I think there is more reality to it than that. How exciting it is to meet this new world and Pearl much more! I'm with you all the way! Pearl has a fan in me the rest of her life <3
I normally don't read YA novels, it's just never been my genre but I've read every book read by Elin Peer so when I was told Ms. Peer and her daughter, Pearl Beacon had started a new series, "Ancient Souls", I knew I had to at least try the first book, 'Karma's Return'. I will honestly say, I'm really impressed with this storyline. I can't even imagine going back to school after being out for thirty years much less a millennium. Fixing a screw-up is one thing, having to literally walk in someone else's shoes in order to do it is, in my opinion, a bit intimidating but not in Karma's mind. She had this. NOT. I'm anticipating the next book in this series to see where things go next.
What a great start to a new series. The beginning took me a little to get through because of meeting new characters and a different kind of story than I am used to. A few chapters in I felt more excited by what was going on with the story and the characters Karma was a very interesting character and had me wondering what she would do next. I loved the supporting characters in Emma’s life and how Karma interacted with them. The end felt like a cliff hanger leaving me curious for the next installment.
Ancient Souls- Karma’s Return is a fun read! I love how the story was told from the main characters individual perspective as this adds so much to the development of the story. There is sadness, loss, triumph and a cliffhanger which leaves you excited for the next book! As always, reading fills the soul with excitement and possibilities! Check this story out, I’m glad I did!
Wow, this was one amazing beginning to a new series. This time, Elin Peer wrote with her daughter. Deals with bullying and is perfect for everyone. Can’t wait to read the next book.
Ancient Souls - Karma's Return (Ancient Souls Series Book 1) By Elin Peer and Pearl Beacon
I'm a big fan of Elin Peer, and when she told me she was writing a book with her daughter Pearl, I thought I should read it, and WOW it caught me like Elin's other books. Elin's other books are for adults, so this series are in the category of young and young adults. This first book in the series "Ancient Souls" is a book that came around my entire emotional register and really got under my skin. I was upset, angry and felt cared for by the main character Emma while I read the book. We hear about bullying, suicidal thoughts, suicide attempts, boyfriend worries, insecurity and reincarnation. It shows the emotions and challenges that many of us face or have faced in our teens. If you really open your heart and feel what is around you, then you will find that you can always find related spirits who can understand you and cheer you on even if you can not see them. I can only recommend this book and Elin Peer's other books.
Quick ratings Overal 4/5 stars Characters 4/5 stars Setting 3/5 stars Writing 5/5 stars Plot and themes 5/5 stars (Unique!) Narrator type: Multiple povs. In first person (Emma and Karma) Other things to notice: The story is a YA book, and is the first book in a series. And it's a true high school story.
This is the first story written by the mother and daughter team.
Trigger warnings:Bullying, loneliness, depressive thoughts, self-harm, suicide attempt. (It was written in a way that showed the aspect of these TW's, without reaching a state where you as the reader would get ^these thoughts^ for reading them. It's more informing and showing than directly dark. I would say that it's safe for younger teenagers to read it, or older audience for that matter.)
Summary and Themes This is a fantastic book, that shows the emotions and challenges that some high school students may experience in school. It's a time where being unpopular and alone will make you judged by the crowd. Where everyone seems to be against you, or not register your existence. All hope may seem lost. Until help is on its way. Emma who is a high school student experiences all of this, and she has no friends to help her. An ancient soul, called Karma, comes down to earth to help Emma because of a mistake she made. A mistake she will have to fix before it's too late. Seeing Emma go through what feels like hell for her, she takes control over Emma's life to save her. But it's a harsh journey for Karma who haven't been on earth for thousands of years, and now have to deal with modern teenagers... They seem to have changed a little since she was there the last time. XD While Karma has to deal with Emma's emotional thoughts and bullying, she also gets to feel what it's like being in love for the first time again.
This book will give you the whole package of a high school story - mean popular girls, mean teachers, athletic boys, sport, first love, bullying, loneliness, etc. I found the book to be both funny, teaching but also incredible eyes opening for the many good advice. Like, it has so many motivating and good life advice!!! So READ THIS BOOK!
Characters I loved that we got to see huge character development from BOTH Emma as a depressive and lonely teenager, but also the ancient soul Karma that had to stay strong for Emma while dealing with her messy life and dark teenage emotions. But was also happy to see how Emma then had to take control over her real life and for once having to stand up for herself. What I missed in the story was some more character descriptions of their appearances and sometimes also the setting of the story. A deeper description of the surroundings and characters' appearances would have been great. On the other hand, do their personalities shine through, and leave no one to question that they are all unique and all have an interesting backstory, especially for why they act as they do.
Note to me: It has some ancient greek stuff included! (but NOT related to Greek Mythology!) As a lover of anything related to ancient greek, I was overjoyed when I saw this!
Spirituel world and topics What made me love this book, even more, is the connection between the earthly world and the spiritual world. The whole idea was so unique since it showed a world-building unlike anything else that I had seen. It had the element of the earthly (regular human world) with a twist of an unknown but incredible interesting Spirituel/divine world. The whole idea of how Spirituel guides and ancient souls function in the cosmos, along with how everyone reincarnates was new and so interesting to read. It showed a completely new idea of how life after death is, and what happens with the souls after death. Along with what they do in the spiritual world. It's also a book that shows that someone might experience some difficulties in the earthly world but help is always there, even if u can't see the "people" helping. Help comes from; family, friends, and spiritual guides that are all there even if they might not know it. In general, the whole spiritual world was unique and fascinating to read about.
Overall, I'm really happy that I got to read this book. I would definitely recommend it to everyone - both young and older audiences. It's unique, but can still be a relatable story, while also being incredibly inspiring with so amazing motivating quotes. I would definitely read it some time again.
Exploring the spiritual influence of one’s existence.
One day, each of us may come to realize that we are all old souls. I believe that we choose to reincarnate multiple times to learn and expand our consciousness. This is why I find it so refreshing for Elin and Pearl to be guided to take their creative writing in this new direction. It is a perfect outlet for each of their gifts – life coaching, communication skills and spiritual values.
At first, I felt a bit put off by the initial representation of the ancient souls and guardians/guides because it didn’t fit with my personal concept and it felt somewhat contrived, especially, Dion’s persona and interaction with the soul group. Then again, these are stories written for our entertainment and who is to say (at this point in time) that another perception isn’t as likely to be true – so I will suspend any disbelief and read on….
The bullying friends at Emma’s school really irritated me but I grew to love the depth of character in Emma and Ty. Karma took up the challenge to fix the error of her ways and in the process the reader acquires a few good lessons in life.
I enjoyed the book but I would like to see the authors use this theme to take on more of the challenges people (not just younger adults) will face today adjusting to a new earth and a higher consciousness, taking back control and inspiring all of humanity to be of service to each other. It begins with one person and/or two or more people working together. This new series, intended for a wider audience, is definitely a step in the right direction. Elin Peer always goes to the heart of what matters in her writings. Pearl is certainly a blossoming asset.
I went into this book thinking it would be an epic adventure, with swords and battles, and - for some reason- dragons. There were no swords. There were no dragons. However, there was an epic adventure, and an unforgettable battle. But this adventure took place in a modern-day Highschool, and the battle was one teenagers face every day - trying to fit in without losing ourselves. As a Highschool student myself, I felt like I connected with this book on a different level. Elin and Pearl have done a fantastic job of representing student life, bad bits and all. There were so many moments whilst reading this book that I had to stop and take a second to just think about what had been written - I hadn’t thought it possible for an author to capture Highschool and teenage reality as well as Elin and Pearl have. The main character (being an ‘outsider’) offers a unique and interesting insight into the life of today’s teenagers, and at times I found myself laughing out loud to their thoughts and their attempts to understand Snapchat. I connected with that rather deeply. I would recommend this book to any teenager who is having difficulty at school, at home, or with their mental health. I would also recommend this book to individuals who are perhaps not struggling, but want a fun read. After having read this brilliant instalment, I have found myself observing and understanding the world - specifically the people I am regularly surrounded by - in a different way. I am so grateful Pearl and Elin put the time into creating this beautiful story, and I can’t wait for the next instalment.
Everybody knows my love from this author's books and this one is not an exception. Karma's return is the first book of her new series and it's the first co-written book with her daughter (something which I find really sweet). Few words about the book: Emma is a shy girl suffering from the pressure that modern times and social media put on people (not only teenagers). Everything around her is overwhelming, becomes too much to handle and she believes she has noone to lean on or reach out to. In a moment of weakness she decides to take her own life and that is where Karma (an ancient soul protecting humanity) comes in by living inside her body and starts changing her life just by changing her point of view. She teaches Emma that silence is not always gold and that is ok to speak your truth. I liked the book. It's definitely different from what we are used to from Elin Peer but still a good book. It was nice to read how teenagers think and their mentality with everything that goes around nowadays. It was a good start to-it looks like- a very good series.
With spiritual and mythical undertones, Karma’s return is the perfect concoction of fate within the teenage dimension. Authors Elin Peer and Pearl Beacon have created a realistic world in which we can fully escape whilst questioning our own purpose and existence.
As the story unfolds, the events accurately capture life as a teen in high school America: the cliques, the bullying, the pressures to fit into society rather than stand out from the crowd. I loved the way in which the authors expressed main character Emma’s vulnerability, with no fear in portraying the impact of daily despair and isolation upon a person. I do however feel that some of the other characters perhaps did not have the depth that Emma did but this was understandable given that they were not the main protagonists. What I also appreciated was how the bullies were given back stories and reasons for their own actions rather than just being painted as your typical ‘villains’ of the novel.
On immersing yourself in the pages, you’ll find yourself following Karma, an otherworldly spirit, who decides to unfairly punish Emma leading to Emma’s decision to nearly take her own life. Given the fact that Emma has an important path to follow, it is Karma’s job to temporarily displace Emma’s soul from her body and make her wrongdoings right. Delving into a more human experience is a challenge for Karma, and readers will enjoy watching someone who regards themselves as superior having to function on a human level. The interplay between the characters throughout the novel is fast-paced and for fans of the teen fiction genre, it’s authentic and compelling. An ‘easy read’ in many respects, it has page-turning quality that encourages you to keep reading ‘just one page more’.
The Book Dragon had the pleasure of reviewing Karma’s Return on behalf of the authors themselves and thoroughly enjoyed the experience; with two more books in the trilogy, I’m desperate to read the next two, especially with the cliffhanger we were left with…a fully deserved 4 stars.
Review of Karma´s Return – the first book of three in The Ancient Souls Series
Elin Peer and her daughter Pearl Beacon have started writing together and the start is like Elin´s first books for young people. Does it matter how we relate to and treat each other? Will we come to heaven or hell when our time is up? Or will we come back as humans to make up for wrong choices and mistakes and get another chance to show that we have more to give. It is an interesting question and can be discussed by people of different ages and background. This book could be read by young people, their parents and grandparents and give interesting insights when talking about how we see what will be the result after our passing.
Thanks Elin and Pearl! Looking forward to the coming books in this series.
Karma's Return is a book of hidden depths, wrapped up in an entertaining story suitable for teens and adults alike. The story is cleverly infused with deep and spiritual themes (though not religious), written in a way that is thought provoking without being overwhelming, dry or preachy in nature. Friendship, family and self-esteem are the main themes explored in the book, though it included a wonderful love story too.
The characters were all empathetically written, their flaws and imperfections making them likeable and easy to connect with. I adored Karma, loved seeing how her character helped Emma and her friends and family whilst also undergoing significant character growth herself.
An excellent book about the need for us to always be kind to one another because you never know whose life you can change with just a little kindness. Emma is one of those girls that has a natural beauty and she doesn't do anything to enhance it she dresses different and keeps to herself she has been attracted to the school quarterback forever but she has always been kind but not to everyone she has no friends since her BFF's moved away and she just hasn't been able to make new ones for some reason in high school so she just keeps to herself, there are some things that make her happy. Ty is the Captain of the Football team and very popular he has lots of friends he likes Emma but her brother and others made it clear that she was not for him. Something happens to Emma that makes her do something dangerous. Karma steps in just in time but has to step into Emma's shoes unwillingly but things may be looking up.. An excellent storyline and the characters are extraordinary and intriguing. Drama, suspense, mystery, betrayal, bullying, friendship, entertaining fun, and love. I read an ARC via BookFunnel without obligation. I volunteered an honest review.
This inspiring story drew me in right from the beginning. It brought back memories for me when I was in high school, and I immediately connected with Emma as I experienced my fair share of it. When Karma was sent back to Earth to fix her errors that was intriguing especially since she had no powers and had to do it in human form. She learned a lot from her time on Earth as well. Overall, this story has so much gone on for it and it makes an excellent discussion on bullying as a way for teens to open up about their feelings on the topic. Once again Ms. Peer along with her daughter has woven a tale that is inspiring and one that I will be thinking about well after reading. I am volunteering to leave a review for an ARC of this book.
Karma is an ancient soul who uses, you guessed it, karma to teach & direct the behaviors of the rest of us. All of us need to re-learn how to be kind to ourselves and each other. And how to be generous, loving, friendly among other qualities. Karma's Return is classified as a young adult book, it's book one of a series undertaken by a Daughter and Mother team. I've read many of Elin's books and am pleased to recognize the same wonderful world & character building; like Mother, like Daughter. This duo does not shy away from touching on some sensitive issues which is done with the greatest of care. Karma's Return is a good book for teenagers and young adults.
Emma is a high school student, with no friends and is bullied, until the pressure becomes too much and in a moment of weakness she decides to do something utterly foolish and this is where Karma steps in just in time. Karma, is an ancient soul, and she’s been sent to clean up the mess she made with Emma. Overall, I found this to be an unique and enjoyable read with complex characters, an entertaining storyline, and filled with bullying, sadness, friendship, drama, loss, and love. I’m looking forward to reading the next book in this series.
Unique. 5 stars. - It’s not my usual genre but this is a very creative story. It is unique. I don’t believe I’ve read something with spirit guides. Emma is a high school student who is in trouble because of Karma. Karma had to make it right with Emma, her family, and her high school life. The plot is clever. I wasn’t planning to continue with the next book in the series but I spent the whole night reading and it is very engaging. I received an advanced copy and voluntarily chose to review it.
This mother/daughter writing duo has written an exceptional story! Well, actually two!
Amidst the love story, are real issues the characters deal with, whether it be teaching life lessons, relationships, or other relevant topics.
There was more than once I was brought to tears! Gaia and Calan's love story will warm your heart!
I definitely need more about these two!
Honestly readers, let's make sure this writing duo knows a trilogy won't be enough! It worked for the Men of the North series! Maybe it will work for this series too!
Karma, an ancient soul, is tasked with teaching humanity empathy and has spent millennia trying to accomplish that. As the story progresses a lesson goes too far, a mess needs righting, and walking a mile in another’s shoes may be just the thing needed to reset things. Elin Peer and Pearl Beacon crafted a lively tale about the human condition, teaching through actions, and how even the darkest of feelings can be turned around with a different perspective. These ancient souls could definitely use some time with the human experience.
I wasn’t sure I would enjoy the whole Old Soul in high school angle but I quite enjoyed how it was handled. The read was smooth, elegant even. Though the message of the novel was made very clear and often it felt refreshing rather than redundant - which is a tough thing to manage for sure. I will definitely be reading book 2! The only thing I struggled with was how quickly Emma’s depression seemed sorted out, I would have liked to hear more about her progress in that area, but that’s a small note in an otherwise lovely read.
Brilliant, thought provoking, and insightful new series! Both authors in this series can seamlessly weave a tale you can not only believe but also love to read. When Karma makes a miscalculation in her work, it pushes her intended recipient too far. To remedy her error, she has to return to the human world which she thinks will be simple. As it turns out, it will be anything but. Fabulous book, inspiring story, and a great new series to read!! Loved it!!
These "guides", Karma, Dion, and Gaia especially, seem to be more manipulative than helping. The interaction between Karma and Emma was good but out of nowhere Dion is manipulating Miracle into sex for a second time and he and Gaia seem more like bullies than helpful guides. Really ruined the flow of the story for me. This is my first read by these authors and I didn't care for it.
While Emma is a teenager, this book and the role Karma plays, and the spiritual commentary all weave together for a very thought-provoking book. Extremely well done. Great writing, fast-moving, yes. But the underlying theme of spiritual growth and awareness have such depth. It's the first fiction book that I highlighted and journaled on regarding my own spiritual path. This is a must-read! Can't wait for the next one?
A Pleasant Surprise!! Reincarnated, High school bullying and karma!! This is not at all what I thought it was gonna be. Emma is the main character along with Karma. She has had a really hard time dealing with life since her Grandmothers passing.
You are a very old soul, Emma. You have reincarnated many times, each time in a different body and a different life. This is not your first lifetime, nor will it be your last.”
This is high school drama at its worst. This new young author along with her mother have done a excellent job of showing how hard it is to be a teenager in this day and age.
Yes, it’s YA, but it’s still filled with uncanny insight into the teen existence. Karma is, well, enjoying a taste of karma herself, regulated into Emma’s body to fix all she done wrong.
Such a fresh take on being a teen, you get the two sides of the coin in knowledge and teen angst. I wasn’t sure what to expect but Karma doesn’t disappoint. Recommend.
