Those Kilted Bastards #1

The Duke's Virgin Sister

Rate this book
They haven’t quite managed to tame her wild streak.

It is to be The Match of the Season. At least, that’s what Lady Carlotta Merritt, sister to the cool and aloof Duke of Cashingham, has been told repeatedly by her mother. The Dowager is beyond thrilled about her daughter’s engagement to Society’s most eligible bachelor, Lord What’s-His-Face. Carlotta, on the other hand, would much rather be gallivanting around her brother’s Yorkshire estate, falling out of trees or fishing in the streams or reading one of her naughty books in the shade on a summer day.

But her mother has made it very clear that she’s to behave herself, as befitting the sister of a duke, and Carlotta has been trying, honest. But when Mother is called up to Scotland, she invites Carlotta and her fiancé to follow…sans chaperone. That’s when her brother volunteers his own brother-in-law—the illegitimate Scotsman with a charming grin, a wicked reputation, and battered hands which make Carlotta think all sorts of wicked thoughts—to tag along.

And he knows all the best ways to be wild.

Keith Oliphant knows exactly who he is; the natural-born son of an earl, a close friend to the laird of his clan, and the best damned bare-knuckled boxer in all of England and Scotland combined. These hands of his have done things most men can only imagine, and now they face their biggest challenge yet; holding the safety of a duke’s sister, one whose smile and love of adventure make him yearn for things he can’t have. Especially since she’s engaged to the complete clot-heid who is sitting between them in the coach.

Aye, this journey to Scotland will be a difficult one, despite the opulence of traveling with a duke’s sister. Between his impossible desires, Lord What’s-His-Face the fiancé, and Carlotta’s own wild streak, Keith suspects he’s facing his biggest challenge yet: when he delivers Carlotta to the duke, will she still be a virgin?

Warning: There’s naughty bits. A lot of them. And probably some ridiculously contrived accidents to get the pair of them together sans clothes. And of course, plenty of inappropriate jokes and eye-rollingly bad puns. Get ready for another hilarious Victorian RomCom, with all the best laughs you’ve come to expect from Caroline Lee!

Brilliant, Funny gem

I loved this story. Everything about it. The author brings humor depth and realism to the characters. Completely engaging. I cannot say enough about this book.

Heroine is everything I want and love: She was strong with an edge of vulnerable. Heroine's like Carlotta can seem like a bit 'much' or the humor overplayed. This author has such a talent for bringing 'just enough'. She is a too early for her time in standing up for what is wants and her own life. I loved her.

Oh my Keith. He was adorable. Ever so much tried to be the gentleman. He knows Carlotta is above his station. But he is drawn to her independence and smarts. Its a love match that starts out as friends. Their chemistry is undeniable.

Secondary characters bring fun and depth to the story. The storytelling never goes over the top as romcoms can. It's a talent to bring fun, chemistry and great storytelling to a HEA. Caroline Lee has a fantastic voice and my new favorite.

If you DON'T stay for the Author's Note, you are missing out.

Definitely a one click author for me.

I cannot wait for book 2.

CARLOTTA KNEW there were four universal certainties:

1. Death comes for all creatures.
2. Being a woman meant having fewer freedoms and less fun than men.
3. No matter how long it took to curl her hair, one little bit of rain or humidity would suck all the curl right out and leave her looking like a frizzy maple tree.
4. She would never, ever, ever get tired of kissing Keith Oliphant.

Lady Carlotta Merritt, sister to the cool and aloof Duke of Cashingham is betrothed to Society’s most eligible bachelor, Lord Alfred Dongel. Carlotta, on the other hand, would much rather be gallivanting around her brother’s Yorkshire estate, falling out of trees or fishing in the streams or reading one of her naughty books in the shade on a summer day. Raina, Duchess of Cashingham's thirtieth birthday is approaching & a party is being organised in Scotland to celebrate but Carlotta is unable to travel by train after 'the incident' so she & Alfred will follow by road. That’s when her brother Cash volunteers his own brother-in-law to tag along. Keith Oliphant knows exactly who he is; the natural-born son of an earl, a close friend to the laird of his clan, and the best damned bare-knuckled boxer in all of England and Scotland combined. however keeping Carlotta safe could be his hardest challenge yet.
This is the first book in a new series & another well written fun, humorous, entertaining read. I absolutely love the author's books they always lift my mood. The characters are wonderful, their thoughts have me laughing out loud. I loved both Keith & Carlotta, the chemistry between them more than sizzled. I really liked Keith as a butler & I’m so glad he's found his HEA. I also love that the author is creating a lovely world where characters from previous series are linked & make appearances. I devoured this book in an evening & it was nearing 2am when I finished it & I'm sure I fell asleep with a smile on my face
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

It was a cute, short, easy read. I liked the humor in it, and our hero, Keith, was dream-worthy. I also really liked Carlotta, our heroine, and found her very relatable, so I'm not sure why I didn't love this more. I don't think because it was short.

I gave this and "It Happened One Summer" 3 stars, but I liked this book better. None of the sex scenes were cringe, which I couldn't say about IHOS. This book mentioned butt play too, lol.

I bought this as a freebie along with other books (promotion day), but this one really grabbed my eye out of all those books. I like the humor in the cover too.

Wonderful, hilarious story of Lady Carlotta Merritt, sister to the Duke of Cashingham, and Keith Oliphant, the natural-born son of an earl, and a champion bare-knuckled boxer. Forced together on a road trip these complete opposites learn about themselves and each other. LOVED these two and the side characters (some from the first book in the Those Kilted Bastards series, the Highlander Ever After series and the Second Chance Manor series) although this book can be read as a standalone. Highly recommend for a romantic read with lots of humour.

Scotsman in a Kilt!

Keith is a bare knuckle champion, he is also only a half-brother to a laird, his mother having been a servant. Carlotta is a Lord's sister, engaged to a future earl, who is a misogynistic idiot.
A romance played out on a journey to Scotland where the protagonists fall in love, no matter how inappropriate. Plenty of heat, humour and wordplay make this a great read, with terrific characters.

First book I've read of this author and I think I will finish out the series. The premise of the four friends, "those Kilted Bastards" is intriguing. Author admits this is a Historical Rom Com genre with no intent to be historically accurate. At no point was this a laugh out loud novel, but she has a good sense of humor in her writing.

A solid 3 star read! Carlotta, who's brother is a duke, needs transportation to Scotland for her sister-in-law's (birthday?) party. Her family decides she should travel with the fiancé, Alfred, heir to an earldom. Keith, her brother's brother-in-law, is chosen to ride along with Alfred, Carlotta, and Carlotta's maid as protection during the long journey. Along the way Carlotta finds herself more drawn to Keith, while realizing how awful Alfred really is.

The writing, and historical accuracy, in this isn't the best - but it was entertaining nonetheless. Keith and Carlotta are likable. All 3 stars are for the great tension, chemistry and development of their relationship. This is overall a cute, short romance! I wouldn't necessarily call it amazing, or insist others read this, but it was a fun way to spend a couple of hours.

The plot, and some of the ridiculousness that ensues, is why I can't give this more stars. It's ~200 pages, so of course there isn't going to be a certain depth I would have liked to see. I might read the next book in the future.

A wild side

Carlotta is beautiful and free spirited. She is allowed too much freedom under her brother so her mother brings her to England betrothed her to Lord Dingaling really hard to remember his name! This marriage would break her mentally and emotionally but she believes that's what Cash wants (her brother). Keith a bastard with a castle knows as a Dukes sister she too good for him and does try to stay away but he can't! These two are like fire and gasoline! If you love handsome ex-boxers exciting adventures and humour then this is for you! A beautiful hilarious love story that tugs at the heart! 10 stars!!

Will her wild streak tear them apart …

I am a historical romance reader, and while my appetite for it was opened by the genre classics, it was renewed by historical romcom. So it was with delight I discovered not so long ago this author, since, I have made my mission to miss the least possible of her releases.
I love those Oliphants, they are fun, loyal and they fall hard, everyone of them. Having read Keith’s other siblings romances, it was a nice surprise to see him get his own HEA.
I loved Keith as an « irreverent butler », so it is fun to see him as now an impudent fighter. He is the same cocky fellow, just a bit more older. And honorable to a fault. A bit too upstanding but he would not have been a man to admire if he had been less. Plus he is fun with a wicked sense of humor.
Carlotta is well matched with him, if he can see beyond her lofty rank.
Carlotta is more than a Duke’s sister, yet society asks her to be only the prim and proper version of herself. Thus why she is expected to behave at every turn, always to be someone she is not.
Also the reason she is engaged to who is seen by some as the cream of the cream of the ton when she wants only to scream each time he opens his bread box. But as it is the thing of the Beau Monde to match blue blood together, she tries to convince herself, she is doing the right thing when she only wants to bash the skull of said betrothed.
Until she reaches her breaking point and Keith is the one to piece her together, the wild and the peer.

Once more, we embark in a merry journey with witticisms, wild ride, hot kiss, a dash of danger and a too righteous hero would say Carlotta.

And he knows all the best ways to be wild.

Keith Oliphant knows exactly who he is. Known to be one of the best bare-knuckled boxer for both England & Scotland combined. Keith's hands & body may have done & gone places that most men can only imagine. He is gruff, but a big teddy bear, he is so adorable. Which for his sister, who is married to the Duke, he tries so hard to be a gentleman. Born as a natural-born son of an earl, but illegitimately. Laird of the clan is his closest friend. Now he is faced with his biggest challenge of his life? Keeping the Duke's sister Lady Carlotta safe. While on her way to Scotland with her idiot soon to be husband Lord Dumbbell, or whatever his name is?
Keith knows Lady Carlotta is above his station. But he is drawn to her independence, smarts & feisty behavior. They start out as friends but their chemistry is undeniable & their trip gets a bit complicated when a disagreement about how a Lady should behavior with her fiancé. Leads to her calling off the wedding. Lady Carlotta must get to the Duke & her mother before her EX tells them his side of the story.

Though, the fisty, independent beauty smile & love of adventure make him yearn for things he shouldn't be thinking of his sister in law. Especially since she’s engaged to the complete clot-
But he is being paid a lot which will help in fix the castle that he has inherited from his sibling.

When Keith realizes she has left their lodging by horse. He must find her to keep her safe. Once he does find lady Carlotta their true feelings emerge. But he will not do anything to have him take away her virginity. Not matter what she wants. Between his impossible desires, knowing that she is still betrothed to Lord What’s-His-Face, & Carlotta’s own wild streak, Keith suspects he’s facing his biggest challenge yet: when he delivers Carlotta to the duke, will she still be a virgin?
Read the sexy, funny, stubborn tit for tat relationship of the Lady & the fighter.

The Duke’s Virgin Sister, Book 1 of Those Kilted Bastards series, was about Lady Carlotta Merritt, younger sister to the Duke of Cashingham, and Keith Oliphant.
Carlotta was not happy being engaged to Alfred "Freddie", the honorable Baron Dongel, aka "Society's most eligible bachelor", and heir to the Earl of Blasingcourt. In her mind, he was known as "The Idiot", for he could spout such nonsensical statements that proved to the Ton he had not a lick of intelligence. However, her mother was excited about her betrothal and declared it to be "The Match of the Season".
When her family decided to travel to Scotland to join her brother's in-laws in celebration of his wife's 30th birthday, Carlotta was forced to stay behind in order to attend a ball with her betrothed before traveling a week later. To protect her reputation...and to keep her from creating some sort of scandal. Carlotta, having been known to get into one scrape or another over the years, was under strict rules to NOT cause a scene on the trip, even though her mother had sought to have her travel alone with her fiance. However, her brother had other ideas and had hired his wife's illegitimate Scottish brother to travel with them as a chaperone...and to ensure she arrived in the same condition in which she left London, untouched and unscathed.
When things went horribly wrong, Carlotta and Keith set out on horseback hoping to reach her brother in time to keep the peace. However, as they got closer to the Duke, the more dangerous the journey got...and they just went from bad to worse.
The angst and drama were both volcanic and sometimes heart-wrenchingly bad. However, the humor? Oh.My.Word! It was phenomenal! I don't believe I have laughed so hard when reading a novel as I did reading this book. The "naughty bits"? Those were a welcome tease to the passion that was evident between the two main characters. It was definitely a rom-com story, and quite enjoyable.
The characters were well-developed and quite realistic. Reading the puns, the "inappropriate" jokes passed around by all made the story all that more entertaining. The scenarios that Carlotta and Keith often found themselves in were attention-grabbing and made it difficult to put the book aside. This was definitely worthy of a five-star rating and to be added to the Keeper for the Shelves collection.

Lady Carlotta is restless and annoyed: London and its Ton parties are not to her liking and the man her mother has chosen for her is a pompous idiot who seeks to tame her adventurous nature. Now that all her family has been invited to Scotland for a birthday party the event could provide a respite to the dullness of her life, but since after the infamous Incident Carlotta can’t take the train. She’ll have to travel by coach with her “beloved” fiancé and an appropriate chaperone... And who better than a handsome Scotsman can be that chaperone?
Keith is the bastard son of an earl and the greatest boxer in Scotland and England and he is NO chaperone! But of course he can provide Carlotta and her stupid fiancé a certain level of protection on the road, and that’s exactly what Carlotta’s brother, and Keith’s brother-in-law, the Duke of Cashingham, is asking of him. But can Carlotta and Keith resist a blooming attraction?
This book is a little jewel, the perfect read when you are down and need something to brighten your day. The dialogue is sparkling and the characters gorgeously fleshed out. I laughed at Carlotta’s antics and Keith’s “desperation” at her and had a lot of fun from the beginning to the end.
Carlotta is strong and she knows what she wants, but she’s also vulnerable and eager to be loved and appreciated for herself. I felt for her and all those poor women that had to abide by society rules and were betrothed against their will to pompous idiots more often than not.
Keith is very much the dashing hero willing to do everything he can to protect his woman. I fell for him quite easily! Ah, this Scotsmen!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Been waiting for Keith's story and I loved him as a hero

Loved the characters and the chemistry/tension. Carlotta is a lot of fun. It has some nice spice. More heat than the two other Lee series that I have read 🔥🔥🔥 This one does have several funny moments and banter also.

It likely would have been a 5 star if not for the continuity errors that kept pulling me out of the story. Timelines/plotlines seemed off again as I have noted in some other of her stories. Also, it drove me crazy that ages of characters and/or ages in relation to other characters, when mentioned, didn't add up. For example, it is basically mentioned that she is 20, but for that to be true given the decade between her and Cash, he would have had to marry at about 14 in order to have had a 10yr old son in his book and now be married to his new wife for at least 5 years, which given details from his story is highly unlikely to say the least.. Yes, I notice these things and it drives me mad when they don't add up. There are other examples, and unfortunately it really affected my enjoyment. Maybe it won't bother you as much, or you won't notice as many things if you haven't read the related books.

I am looking forward to Malcolm's story now. He seems like he might be on the spectrum, which is a particular favorite of mine. I loved the little taste we got of his character and the budding mystery with Crowe.

This book was FUN. I absolutely loved Carlotta. I love those noble girls who want nothing to do with convention. And she doesn’t hem and haw over whether or not she should misbehave - she just does. I love her inner monologue too.

The hero was a great, typical naughty Scotsman. He “played his role” perfectly. I’m intrigued by his whole family/history and plan to read more of them. The “kilted bastards” series is set up nicely and I’m intrigued to read the rest of their stories and find out what happened between this group of friends!

Caroline’s writing is hilarious and I am now searching out what else I want to read by her! I’m excited to already own anthologies with her stories and will try those next.

I won this book in a giveaway and had no obligation to review.

ETA favorite quotes:

Lady Carlotta Merritt, younger sister to the Duke of Cashingham, idly contemplated bashing in the skull of her fiancé.

“I’ve asked you repeatedly not to call me Freddie in public. ‘My Lord’ would be acceptable, but I’ll allow ‘Alfred’ when you are overcome with emotion.”

“Ah. Ye picked up on that, did ye?” I pick up on everything ye say, Keith Oliphant.

I picked up this book during a free promotion, even though the title made me roll my eyes. Unless she was previously married, nearly all heroines in historical romance are virgins! I found the book somewhat peculiar. At the end of the book, the author had the H&h go on about how wild the heroine was... but except for a few points in the book, she didn't really come across as such during most of the book. The book is steamy in several parts—nothing I have an issue with—but the first intimate scene seemed to come out of nowhere. Several times during the book, the couple acted oddly toward each other for no good reason... or at least none was given or explained. Another oddity: while not much crude talk happened through most of the book, the end had a fair amount. The book certainly had consistency issues. It is like the author had this vision of the couple and their story in her head, but she thought the reader could just intuit it... so the author didn't have to take the trouble to actually show us!

🌶🌶.5

This was a quick, fun, and witty historical romance. This is my first book by this author and I had a good time with this. Carlotta was a hoyden and needed a chaperone and protector for a journey to Scotland with her fiancé. Keith is a Scottish bare-knuckled boxer and the illegitimate son of an earl. He is tasked with making sure he gets his brother in law’s sister to Scotland safely.

They can only travel by horse and carriage, due to an incident where Carlotta can no longer travel by train. This led to a long road trip with the annoying fiance. Carlotta and Keith are instantly attracted to each other, but they also become very close on this trip.

I loved their banter and they had great chemistry. I also enjoy a road trip in my historical romances. Keith was so sweet and sexy, while Carlotta was a feisty and carefree heroine.

I am definitely interested in reading more from this author and continuing the series.

This was a fun rags to riches type story. Keith is the illegitimate son of an Earl but has close links to his half siblings. He’s also a boxer. His sister’s husband, a Duke asks him to chaperone his sister and her fiancé to Scotland as his sister can’t take the train due to a previous ‘incident’.
Lady Carlotta dislikes her fiancé who gets called a variety of names based on his title of Lord Dongle. He has ideas about women that don’t align with hers and as she begins to have a friendship with Keith and realise they have shared interests, her bravery grows to be able to tell Lord Dongle where to stick it!
Then the adventure really starts with Carlotta and Keith riding through England into Scotland, trying to fight their attraction to each other and Keith telling her he’s not good enough.
I liked how the story played out and that there was a HEA. I’m looking forward to reading more in this series and by this author.

Book 1 of the Kilted Bastard series:
What A Fun and Sexy Romance Story.
Carlotta is a mischievous young lady that has a mind of her own.
She meets up with Keith a hunk of a highlander who is quite honorable.
He is commissioned to be her and her betroths escort to the highlands.
Things do not go as planned. A rip roaring fun and exciting story unfolds
with a lot of angst, lusty attraction, many humorous moments a bit
of heartache which leads the couple to their destiny .
Many adult scenes that were so well described they had my toes curling.
Mature reader advised:
Heat level 4 out of 5
I look forward to reading book 2 The Earls Brazen Widow
I did receive this ARC copy for my honest opinion.

Great romcom.Imagining what a hunka hunka may not be wearing under a kilt is just plain fun

One fighting noble bastard. One feisty heroine trying to please her family. One supercilious idiot of a bethrothed. A little adventure, steamy passion and humor. Adds up to a great romcom.
Gotta love Caroline Lee's Scotsmen. Instead of the crude f-word, there's the more melodic *ook. And she always finds an excuse to put a hero in a kilt. Imagining what a handsome hunka hunka may not be wearing underneath his kilt is just delicious fun.
4.25 Stars. Might be a little stingy. I expected a more complex resolution before HEA. Also wished for more of Lord Ding-Dong. He was a wonderfully pompous arse to poke fun at.
Recommend for all who love romantic comedy, historical fans or not.

As Ms. Lee comment at the end, she’s not so much concerned about historical accuracy as she is about how much fun her tale would be to read. I must admit, Carlotta’s and Keith’s shenanigans and adventures did keep the focus away on the almost contemporary romance vibe this story had.

As mean as it is, I also enjoyed all their nicknames for the not-at-all-progressive Lord Dongel, who wanted to teach Carlotta her “place”. Dingel, Ding-dong, Dipsh*t ...even Ding-Dong Ditch ... which Malcolm (or was it Cash?) admitted he didn’t know the meaning of but liked the sound of, regardless. 😆

This tale was an amusing and light (i.e., not dark and foreboding/gothic) introduction to Ms. Lee’s work. I look forward to reading more stories from her.

Laugh Out Loud Funny!

Caroline Lee’s books always put me in a good mood. I love how her books combine heart and humor. Fair warning though, if you’re a stickler for historical accuracy this book may trigger you. There is some creative license taken with history.

This book was a feel good read for me. I was cheering Carlotta on in her freewheeling ways. I felt for Keith when he felt he wasn’t good enough for his Princess. I wanted to smack Lord Dongel whose name was a source of constant hilarity…Lord Ding Dong Ditch or Lord Danglybits, anyone?

I am on to the next book in the series as soon as I’m finished with this review, and I have no doubts that Malcolm’s story will have just as much heart and humor.

Great Read!

I absolutely loved this story. It is so full of extremely likable characters (and one particularly obnoxious character), an intriguing storyline, and a delightful use of humor throughout that just makes the reading so much better. On top of all that, the serious side of the tale is carefully crafted and inserted throughout to create the bumps and bruises needed for focus and outcome. Our hero continually fights against his dreams while our heroine pushes for her fantasies to come true. You simply have to read this to find out if the two have a chance when two separate worlds that make up the greatest part of the population of late nineteenth century England collide.

A thoroughly enjoyable story about Keith, Bastard Oliphant son of an Earl, and Carlotta, sister of the Duke of Cashingham. Not your typical Lady of the ton, Carlotta knows what she wants and it’s not being engaged to Lord Ding-Dong, her betrothed idiot. Carlotta needs to find the courage to tell her mother and brother what she desires. Once she meets Keith, and he is hired to chaperone her to Scotland, her desires become clearer. Unable to take the train after The Incident, Keith escorts Carlotta and Lord Ding-Dong, on a journey of adventure and discovery of one’s heart’s desires. This story will leave you chuckling for days!

Carlotta’s mother accepted a proposal for Carlotta without her knowledge. She did so because the guy was to inherit the title of Earl someday. However, this guy is completely against all the things that Carlotta likes and is. She calls him an idiot. He talks about training her to be the perfect wife, seen but not heard. Now a trip is planned to Scotland and they are going by carriage. Her sister-in-laws brother is going along to be chaperone and protector. The fiancé spends all his time telling her what is wrong with her. But she finds Keith the chaperone interesting. This makes for an interesting book.
