Old Ireland in Colour 2, the much-anticipated sequel to their beloved bestseller, John Breslin and Sarah-Anne Buckley have dug even deeper into Ireland’s historical archives to uncover captivating photographic gems to bring to life using a unique blend of cutting-edge technology, historical research and expert colourisation. Old Ireland in Colour 2 celebrates more of the rich history of Ireland and the Irish from all walks of life and from all four provinces, as well as the Irish abroad, throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. From the chaos of the Civil War to the simple beauty of the islands, from the iconic to the domestic, there is something new and inspiring to be gleaned from every single page.
I love Old Ireland in Colour 2, just as I loved the first book for the step back in time they present. John Breslin has taken historic black and white photographs and digitally added color, which he does with extraordinary care using information available about what shades of paint or clothing were in use at the time of the shot. He also found documents or looked for family knowledge about hair and eye colors. What this does for me as the reader is take away the barrier that black and white can erect of making the people in the past seem other or not like us. Now I look at these images and see they were precisely like us. And this is not to say I don't appreciate the art form of black and white photography. It can be stunning. But, for a window to the past, this adding of real life color really works for me. In addition, the photos are accompanied with brief text by historian Dr Sarah-Anne Buckley putting them in context.
