Now this is a great way for a new horror author to make their mark. A well written book about a couple who is plunged into this crooked, hateful, satantic town of Elmwood. This place seems like it could be in the same messed up world as my own brainchild, Meadowsville. Neither place are ideal getaway spots, unless you like playing chicken with your own demise. But I thought the relationship between Aiden and Laura was detailed perfectly, before, during, and after all of the trials and tribulations here. You genuinely cared for them, and they are kept the primary focus throughout, which I thought was a good move. There are a decent amount of other characters, who all get their own screen time, but the couple needed to be kept front and center. The general creepy and eerier atmosphere is created early on and kept consistent, never overstaying its welcome. Now there were a few points where I felt like the author went a little too complex with certain concepts, leaving me very unsure of how it was all going to be addressed and tied up in the end. But surprisingly, it all came together nicely, even leaving a few possible opportunities to write further sequels on Elmwood. I am not a big fan of ghosts, hauntings, and/or cult-based stories, but this won me over and I see a lot of potential for this new colleague of mine. Well done and welcome to the horror author club, NT Morris!!

Aidan and Laura hope to have fine long holidays in a remote cabin at Elmwood. Before Aidan had a traumatizing encounter with a dead woman. They don't know their holiday home is haunted. It seemed to be the home of a serial killer. Besides there was a strange cult named the order. Will Aidan and Laura solve the mystery? Will they survive the threatening situations tightening up on them? What about all the missing persons in the small town. This was an extremely dark and eerie supernatural tale with the right edges at the right times. Hope the author will lead us back to Elmwood rather sooner than later. Have the feeling there is unfinished business... highly recommended hair raising horror on some very dark rituals.

Elmwood, a small coastal town that harbours secrets beyond imagining!

Aidan witnessed something atrocious and still has nightmares because of it. His wife suggests to go away for a few months, to clear the air in Aidan’s head. So they rent a stunning house in Elmwood. But once there, strange things start happening to the couple. Elmwood seems to have secrets and no one can be trusted!

@n.t.morris brought back a vibe I recognise from seventies movies like The Omen and The Exorcist, but at the same time I had a claustrophobic feeling reminiscent of Pet Sematary! I was sucked into the story from the beginning, felt at times someone was standing hunched over me in the dark (reading this at night maybe wasn’t always the best idea) 😂

I want to express my love for that beautiful book cover as well! 💚

I want to thank Neill for giving me the opportunity to be an ARC-reader for him! This book will be released early October, so perfect for the Halloween enthusiasts!! Support your indie (horror) writers!!!

Aidan and Laura goes to the quiet town Elmwood after Aidan had a traumatic experience. They stay at an old Victorian house called the lake house located at the edge of the forest. They soon find out that people have gone missing in the area, and weird things starts happening in the house. There’s also something sinister going on in the woods…

-This book reads like a horror movie, something I really liked.
-I loved the small town setting, that’s one of my favorite things in books.
-The book held my interest throughout the whole story, I was very curious about what the deal was with the house and the woods.
-LOVED the old diary that was found. I’ve recently found out that I absolutely love diaries and letters being found in horror books, so that was one of my favorite things in the book.
-The ending was exciting and I’m hoping for a sequel.

-I would have wished for a tad more fleshed out characters.

This is a great book for Halloween, it has all the spooky elements. Spooky house, creepy woods, missing people, small town and paranormal stuff! And a kickass cover 🎃

I enjoy a good horror read that is atmospheric to its content. This did a great job of that. I felt how it must have felt for Aiden, as I could practically feel the unknown, sinister eyes boring into me as I read some parts.

It begins in their home city where a serial killer is murdering women. When Aiden has an experience he can't shake, wife Laura suggests they go on an extended vacation to quaint Elmwood. Aiden agrees that would fit the bill and they blaze out of there.

But sometimes, location may not be the issue. The woods immediately call to Aiden. Laura is unaware of any darkness until she makes a discovery in the attic. Townsfolk dare not step a toe on the property of the lovely, huge home they're staying in. Looks can be deceiving all around. Where is safe? Who is hiding something? What's being hidden? The ending was really something special, and I'm not sure if it is leaving off for a sequel, but it left me wondering...

📚BRIEF BREAKDOWN: Aidan and Laura’s relaxing trip takes a turn for the worse.

🎥PERFECT MOVIE PAIRING: Wrong Turn (2003; Rob Schmidt)

🎸MOOD SONG: Vacation (The Go-Go’s; 1982)

🎬 ADAPTATION SELF-CAST: Maybe like Jack? That’d be fun.

🧠HERE’S WHAT I GOT: Morris’s debut was one hell of a way to kick off a writing career! I couldn’t get enough of this waking nightmare. Small towns freak me out enough as it is and this just bumped that to a whole new level. I had some serious trouble sleeping after this one. With some twists and turns that will wring you dry, you’ve got to check out this really great piece available in early October! A PERFECT read for your Halloween season. Thanks again to N. T. for the advanced copy of it, I can’t wait to have a physical copy in my hand on its release day!

Elmwood is the perfect read for the spooky season, transporting readers to an idyllic small town harboring some deadly secrets. N.T. Morris cleverly ratchets up the tension, sprinkling clues throughout the story that allow readers to experience the mystery as it unfolds. A blood-soaked tale you won’t be able to put down.

I received a recommendation for this book from my teacher and buddy Gabriel ^^. I felt compelled to read it since he had read it and had written such a wonderful review of it. When I had acquired it, I thought I would read Elmwood after finishing the book I was already reading, but the book cover kept calling to me, like the darkness (you'll understand what I'm talking about).

I had several emotions while reading the novel, including the suffering he was going through, my own tension at times, and the sentiments of excitement, fear, and worry. N.T. Morris made real everything I could imagine feeling in a novel. Regarding the horror genre, the novel was solely focused on it. The strange, enigmatic setting and its inhabitants, as well as the blood and gore, were all vividly described in the book. Simply amazing stuff, I must say.

Anyone looking for an excellent horror/thriller with a moderate amount of gore should read this book. Characters and locations with frightening situations that are not too far off from our world.

Also, it would be fantastic if there were a sequel to this amazing piece of art!

A 3 Skull Read:

Elmwood is a creepy and atmospheric novel, focusing on the story of a man plagued by nightmares. Aidan has been having the same nightmare every single night, ever since finding a body on the side of the road. In an attempt to give her husband a change of scenery, Laura suggests the two take a long vacation in Elmwood.

Of course once they get there, the place is anything but idyllic and their rented Lake House is becoming just as creepy as the townsfolk.

I enjoyed reading this fast-paced story by N.T. Morris. He is able to set the stage to scare his readers, and leave them holding their breath in fear of what’s around the next corner.

The book also contained quite a few twists and turns, some of which were a bit too predictable for me. That isn't to say that they weren’t good, I was just able to figure it out fairly quickly.
In the end I found Elmwood an entertaining horror reader, but I wanted just a bit more.

Thanks to the author for the review copy.

This is a great story. It's multifaceted, and does a fantastic job of keeping you guessing. Is it a ghost story? A cult story? A murder story disguised as a ghost story?

What will the outcome be? Is it all in their heads? Why is the dog so darn cute?

We join Aidan and Laura Crain as they take a break to the quiet town of Elmwood, accompanied by their loveable pooch. They have been through some stress lately, and they really deserve some peace and quiet.

So it's a shame they instead get thrust into a mystery that quickly unravels their sanity.

Reading this book, I got a distinct "this is The Shining if it wasn't as isolated" feeling. That's not entirely accurate, especially as you get later in the story, but the fact that there are strange happenings going on and no one can do anything about it really put that thought in my mind. Relationships were strained, danger was always a page away, and something wanted someone for reasons unknown.

Again, the Shining comparison is not entirely accurate, and in many ways this strikes me as a very fresh, very original story. Morris also was not afraid to lead the story in dark directions, somehow combining nihilism with hope to really grip me and leave me desperate to know how it would end.

And that ending was... interesting. I won't spoil it, but be prepared to question what YOU would do in the same situation.

Also, cliffhanger alert! Is there a sequel coming? I don't know.

Overall, I loved this. However, I have to be balanced and honest; I struggled to connect with the writing style. Some grammatical elements didn't feel right and affected my experience, and in places the flow of the writing was a little impeded by sameness of structure and a fair bit of repetition. It wasn't enough to drag me out or ruin the experience, but it was something I found myself picking up on.

My only other area of criticism applies to Chapter 23. I won't spoil it, but I did feel that Aidan seemed to be pretty accepting of what was going on. He was going through a lot, sure, but the way he just let it happen without much of a reaction - especially considering it was essentially a "bad thing" being done - seemed a little out of character to me. A bit more "we shouldn't be doing this, but..." would have improved that scene.

Other than that, though, it was great. Powerful twists, effective descriptions, and leading characters who I really cared about. This story gives spooks and mystery in equal measure, and I am impressed. Looking forward to what Morris produces next.

The cover of this book is gorgeous and the writing drew me right in from the beginning; it had a very strong start. Aiden and Laura were relatable and I was invested in their story and in finding out what was going on in Elmwood. I thought the first few clues hinted at from The Lake House and surrounding woods had a lot of promise, but unfortunately the story started to go a bit off the rails for me in the last third or so. I found some of the secondary characters behaviors too over the top and the plot started to feel a little too convoluted. I liked a couple aspects quite a bit at first, but they weren’t fleshed out enough for me to get a real sense of the why behind everything, which in turn made it hard for me to appreciate the direction things went. I don’t mind a few secrets after I finish a book, but I’d have rather had more focus on the background instead of the surprise twists and reveals that left me wondering “Why?”.

Elmwood ...

This book was recommended to me by a friend, Steven. He read and wrote such a nice review about it that I felt like I should read it too. Unfortunately, the book hadn't been released yet, and I had to wait 2 months to get my hands on it. When I first got it, I was reading another book and decided I'd read Elmwood when I first finished the one I had planned, but that book cover kept calling me like the darkness (you'll get to know what I'm talking about) was calling me.

Two days ago, I started reading it, and I couldn't stop. When I stopped, I'd go over my head to put things together so it made sense of what was happening. It took me 3 days to finish it, but I'm really slow at reading so that was actually fast of me. Okay, let's get back to my review.

N. T. Morris really did an amazing job at writing this very authentic book as his debut novel - I'm not the one to say how good or bad people are at writing especially because English is not my first language , but I'll keep sharing my two cents on their work.

I felt like Elmwood was my neighboring town, all the descriptions about that place seemed so real, the people felt like people I know based on the way they acted in the book. Everything was relatable. The atmosphere he created would keep anyone on their tip of their toes, at moments I could easily visualize what was happening and I could see this movie playing in my head as I kept excited to know what was gonna happen next. I didn't feel disappointed at all.

How I felt? Lots of feelings came to me in different parts of the book, the pain he was going through, the feeling of exciment, the worrying, how stressed I felt at times, I even cried(when you read it, you'll know why I cried). Everything I could feel in a book, N. T. made it happen. As to the horror genre, yeah that was all the book was about, the weird, the mysterious place and people, the gore, everything was such a good descriptive scenery that made things so real. It's just a breathtaking work.

I usually write some passages which call my attention and this one was really interesting, it really has nothing to do with the book itself, but what he said it kinda had an impact on me. Maybe because I believe it is true.

"That's what I like to hear. Too many folks these days can't wipe their arses without being offended."

This book is perfect for anyone who wants a good horror/thriller book with some well ballance ammount of gore. Characters not so distant from the reality we live in, places with sinister events.

I hope there's a sequel to come. N.T., you can start writing your next book, I'll definiely be supportive of your writing. If you haven't bought your copy, go now because ...

Very very light spoilers/ Review for @n.t.morris ' Elmwood (dropping this Monday!)
.
Elmwood centres around Aidan and Laura who are deeply unsettled by recent events. Aidan had discovered a dead woman on the road one night which had left him all shook up. Laura, dealing with her own issues, decides it would be better for the pair to take a break and head to the town of Elmwood. But Elmwood hides dark secrets with a surprising number of missing people and the Lake House, which is set to be Aidan and Laura's new home for a while also harbouring deep secrets...
.
I saw about this one the other month on here. I thought I'd ask if Neill would let me read this as an ARC and he said yes which I was grateful for
.
It's a very dark but gripping tale. There's a lot of mysterious elements to it which I can't tell you about since this review is trying to avoid all that. The Lake House and Elmwood both work as such sinister places. There's so much to them both and you will really imagine yourself being there! I got really lost in the story and wanted to see where it was all headed. There's plenty of twists and tales that keep your attention. A lot of strong characters and plot elements that are juggled and do work on their own and together! If you want to be unsettled and taken on a wild ride, do check out Neill's debut novel! I strongly recommend it to you!
.
Elmwood comes out on October 4th (Monday). Please do check it out and treat yourself to a copy! One that's perfect for fans of horror this October!

Sometimes it’s nice—and often rare—to read something so simply, perfectly solid. Elmwood doesn’t exactly rock the genre boat, but rather, drives it smoothly. And smooth sailing is exactly what I needed and wanted from this. Elmwood doesn’t muddy itself with over complexity, relishing instead in a fast pace and classic horror thrills.

Elmwood is the debut horror novel from @n.t.morris and was the May book club choice for the #welcometoelmwood readalong with @theindiehorrorbookclub

This book has an incredibly tense atmosphere and gave me horrific feelings right from chapter one and it never let go.
I read it over the course of two days because it was like being immersed in watching a horror film where you don't realise how tense you've been feeling until you get to the end and then have that incredible sense of relaxation as the tension dissipates. In this case I was thankful that I wasn't living in Elmwood 😱

The plot centres on young couple Aidan and Laura. They live in the city and their relationship is under strain, mainly due to Aidan's nightmares since finding the dead body of a young girl at an accident.

What they need is a break from the city. A change of pace. A breath of fresh air.

Laura books a getaway at The Lake House, a remote dwelling on the edge of the woods at the small town of Elmwood.

Together with their dog off they go for some relaxation which, if course, is the last thing they are likely to get.

They've unknowingly booked a haunted house in a town where people have been mysteriously going missing and with rumours of a great evil that lurks in the woods.

Elmwood instantly gave me the feeling of the small town Twin Peaks but combined with a number of 1970s horror films concerning cults, Satan and rituals.

The author has skillfully blended ghostly horror with folk horror, satanic horror and full on visceral slasher horror.

I was expecting the psychological horror aspects. I wasn't expecting some of the more bloody moments. Be warned that there are some disturbing scenes. But then, isn't that what horror is supposed to do?

A strong debut and the good news is that the author has plans for a sequel.

Wouldn’t it be great to get away from it all for a bit? To leave behind the big city and enjoy some time in nature? And, while you’re doing it, why not find a nice old haunted, cursed house to stay in too.

Wait, a what house??

Folks, welcome to Elmwood, a place you probably don’t want to go and visit. Sadly, no one told Aidan and Laura that, and the nightmares they tried to leave behind are only going to get worse.

This creepy tale was excellent; the way Morris builds tension and slowly chills each of your vertebrae page-by-page is terrific, not to mention having the ambition to combine a haunted house, murder mystery, cult/folk horror, and a tonne of psychological trauma into one tale…and pull it off. This is unsettling, engaging, and well worth your time.

Elmwood is a dark book! It opens with a horrific death scene and that’s just the beginning. The retreat is meant to be relaxing but strange things start happening in the house and Aidan’s fragile mental state worsens because he keeps seeing things. My favourite parts are the hallucinatory nightmare scenes that confuse and scare Aidan.

The cult storyline is familiar but done well and I’m surprised at how devastating it ends up being. There’s graphic descriptions of child and animal deaths and I admit I wasn't a fan because the point felt belaboured, though they give the story emotional weight. I did wish certain points are expanded more with regard to the history of the cult, as well as the supernatural angle. Aidan’s ultimate fate was also not convincing to me. But I finished this quite fast because I was invested in the story!

Aiden and Laura take a break to the small town of Elmwood. Unfortunately, not everything in town is as idealic as they assume and creepy things start to happen in the house they are staying in. Are they imagining it? Is it real? What's in the basement? As things escalate, Aiden begins to wonder why they ever went to Elmwood in the first place. He's desperate to leave, but will the evil presence let them.

The writing is good and scenic descriptions well fleshed out, creating some spooky scenarios for the characters.

Im guessing this is a debut novel as i can't find anything else written by this author and it's certainly a fine effort. I really enjoyed it, and judging by the ending there will be a sequel in the future. I can't wait!

Classic.

What a glorious roller coaster of real human emotion. From entirely elated to completely sullen. N.T. Morris brings the light and the darkness into each and every page.

Each chapter had me agreeing wholeheartedly with the decisions of the characters, while at the same time questioning my own sanity. What a way to tug on your heart and brain strings. And that CLIMAX.

All the right notes of classic horror, with new elements and completely out there concepts. Absolutely LOVED it. Bravo!

This is without a doubt the best indi horror book I've read so far.
Why? Well opens strongly, with a reason, and that makes the foundation of what is to come. The moment the couple protagonists enter Elmwood we are introduced to the mystery. The atmosphere is building with a nice place and will make you turn the page.
The only thing that bugged me was the feeling that the ending was a bit rushed and too hollywoody for my taste.

They say you should never judge a book by its cover but “Elmwood”’s striking cover image of a slick yellow raincoat, a dark empty void where the face should be, against a dark and ominous forest and under the grinning visage of the full moon appealed to me almost as much as the Stephen King-esque font. “Elmwood” follows married couple Aiden and Laura, who are still very much in love despite having been through some strife. Things have recently taken a turn, though; since Aiden discovered a headless body in the middle of the road, he’s been plagued by nightmares and has taken to hiding the true extent of his suffering, so he jumps at the chance to escape the busy and dangerous city for a getaway in rural Elmwood.

Once there, Aiden is won over by the picturesque town and their quaint Lake House, but things quickly aren’t all as they seem in Elmwood; some of the inhabitants are unnervingly rude, there’s an unexplained number of missing persons, and Aiden hears folktales about how the Lake House and its neighbouring woods are thought to be haunted. Although neither of them put much stock in this, Aiden’s nightmares increase in their intensity; he sees dark shapes stalking him, has vivid dreams of daydreaming out to the dark forest and stumbling across a trench full of dead bodies, and hears an ominous voice calling to him from the darkness. When Aiden turns to the local police department, he finds them less than enthusiastic and even pointing the finger at him after Laura is abducted by mysterious, robed individuals wearing animal skulls following a car crash.

There’s a little bit of everything in“Elmwood”: it’s a murder mystery, a supernatural thriller, a story of grief and loss, and there’s a shadowy cult seemingly behind everything and targeting Aiden to appease some dark and ancient ritual out in the forest! The author does a really good job of setting the scene and establishing his characters; focusing primarily on Aiden and Laura is a fantastic way of keeping things grounded. I liked that they were both supportive and still had a bit of spark in their lives and it really made Aiden’s desperate search for Laura all the more palpable.

Although primarily a psychological, supernatural thriller, “Elmwood” isn’t lacking in visceral horror. We’ve got decapitated corpses, eldritch symbols carved into flesh, gruesome imagery of blood, mass graves, and some pretty startling and effective scares. The Lake House itself becomes almost a living character, with basement doors creaking open and a number of tangible presences looming around every dark corner, to say nothing of the dark and looming forest and its devilish whispers. By the end, the author really escalates the terror as the macabre cult comes to the forefront and the book descends into a nightmarish sequence of human sacrifices. For me, this all landed really well; I enjoyed the escalating sense of tension, horror, and mystery and “Elmwood” had me gripped throughout.

This book is a blast! I had so much fun reading it. It’s a fast paced, action packed, creepy as hell supernatural mystery. The opening chapter was just amazing and so vivid that I was instantly hooked. This very much reminded me of horror novels from the 90s so even though it’s set in present time, it gave me that lovely nostalgic feeling. It’s easy to see where the influences for this author lie but for me, that’s quite exciting as it’s small nods to some of my favourite horrors over the years(I love a wee geek out to myself). It smoothly crosses into several subgenres of horror meaning there is something for everyone. Most importantly, it’s got a spooky forest. SOLD! You know what, even if you read this book and hate it (you won’t) it’s worth having on your shelf because the cover is a beaut.

Fun read.

Elmwood is a supernatural horror that follows our main characters to the quiet haven of Elmwood for a much needed break from their normal lives.
When things go awry, the couple is faced with trouble, prejudice, and a cop who really doesn't like them.

It's a fun read with a couple of spine tingling moments! I rated it three stars because I think the ending could have been executed a little better, and I would have liked more detail and a longer story.

I would recommend to anyone getting into the horror genre or those who like softer horror, to give it a go!

Sidenote: love the cover!!

I was hovering between a 2 and a 3 star, but ultimately it gets a 3 as I really enjoyed the atmosphere creates in the first quarter. Small town, newcomers on holiday treated with suspicion...loved it. But it went downhill from there. I won't go into spoiler territory but this book simply didn't pay off. It could have been AMAZING with a couple hundred more pages that really explored the town, the characters, and the reasoning behind certain events. As it stands though, it felt rushed towards the end, there were several plot holes and unanswered questions and sadly because of this, it was ultimately forgettable. I do look forward to seeing what else the author can do though as their ability to create an atmosphere and draw a reader in is stunning.
Can we also take a moment to appreciate the cover. I read it on my Kindle Oasis and the brief flash of it in negative was everything.

It’s dark, it’s mysterious, it’s bloody…It’s Elmwood!

A great atmospheric read and very well written. It really places you in the shoes of the main character, Aidan, and the obstacles he has to overcome.
I’m a sucker for creepy forests and things that go bump in the night, and this really was delivered beautifully.

Kudos to the author on his first book and I’m certainly looking forward to reading more his works. I wonder if we’ll be visiting Elmwood again at some stage down the line?

Such a spooky read and it’s also so fast paced it’s such a great horror book. I like how the 1st chapter hooks you straight in to the book and it doesn’t let up for the rest of the book as it grips you so tight you dont wanna put the book down at all. I love the way each and every character as there own bits though out the book so we get to really see who they and how they fit so well into the book. The way the author describes every little detail is done in so much depth and so much length which I really liked as it made you get a feel for the more. I loved the spooky house and wood setting as it’s was so mysterious and creepy and the way the author was describing it wow it was done so well and so good. The bit were the dog unfortunately didn’t survive had me in tears and when they had to say goodbye to the dog it broke my heart. I liked how well this story played out and how well it all came together. Even the ending was done in such a gripping and dramatic way that it made the ending so compelling. I like how the last chapter ended as it left it as I open door mystery. Who to say the author might do a sequel to this book and when the author realises any new books I will be buying them and reading them. I think the book would also be so good as a movie too. Such a great book xxx

🌟🌟🌟🌟 to Elmwood by N. T. Morris

Right from the beginning I was impressed with Morris’s ability to grab the reader by the throat and pull them into the story, depicting a brilliantly frightening opening chapter in chilling descriptive detail.

The story follows married couple Aidan and Laura, along with their dog Max, who decide to take a much needed holiday after Aidan discovers a headless corpse on a drive home one night. Traumatised, Laura suggests that a change in destination might help Aidan move past the event, which brings them to Elmwood, a peaceful coastal town, or so they are led to believe.

Hooked yet? You should be.

Morris writes in an engaging manner, pulling you easily into the story while at the same time twisting the tale down unexpected avenues that feel refreshing. His characters are flawed individuals that have a sense of reality to them.

I had wanted this book for so long just because of the cover alone, finally got it on Kindle and I think it's possibly the fastest I've ever read a book. I can truly say this had me anxious to see what the next page had in store. Great horror novel with a fill of ghosts and a crazy town with a secret. The way Neill describes the town and everything in and around it had me wishing I was there. I want to stay in the lake house even though it's all fucked up. Loved this read can't wait to get my teeth into more.
