(Can be read as a stand-alone novel.) A hundred-year-old secret might be the cause of and the key to solving a murder.
Jack and Chloe Bartholomew just wanted a romantic second honeymoon in the beautiful Hudson River Valley at the legendary hotel his family recently acquired. After Chloe's job loss, Jack's writer's block, and a disheartening personal disappointment, they could use a break. However, instead of hot chocolate and horseback rides through the snow, things are all wrong at the Stonehall Estate Resort. First, they learn of months of unexplained mishaps.
Then there's a murder–and it's not the first at this historically tragic mansion. It soon becomes clear someone wants the resort to fail and will stop at nothing to make that happen. The question is…why?
Eager to help the family business, Chloe picks up where the hotel’s last historical curator left off. But things quickly become dangerous when her research uncovers truths hidden for decades—clues related not only to mysteries sparked by a young girl’s death in 1931, but also those haunting the estate today. Before long Chloe finds herself in a deadly race to expose the mansion’s secrets before more innocents become victims of the malevolent force behind it all.
Will Chloe bring the long-lost truth to light in time, or will she be the next to fall prey to the dark scheme that could claim everything, including her life?

Ultimate cold case! During the Depression, a robbery was committed in a who's who area of New York. The bag of stolen items had never been found.
Fast forward to present day. Chloe and Jack celebrate their second wedding anniversary at a newly purchased and renovated resort owned by Jack's father. It quickly becomes clear that someone is out to sabotage the property and prevent it from opening.
Glimpses back to the past crime were neatly woven into the novel. Loved the inclusion of one of Jack's former military buddies.
“They would know there was a murderer loose on Stonehall Estate.”
“I don’t always understand the answers—I can’t say I always like them—but I’m always more at peace knowing I’ve turned the outcome over to God. It lifts a lot of the weight off my shoulders when the burden is heavy.”
“Here was another path. One she hadn’t counted on. One she hadn’t seen coming. A detour she never intended to make from her grand design. But she suspected it was absolutely, positively the right path to go down.”
Another winner from one of my favorite authors, DL Wood. As always, she blends a perfect mix of suspense, mystery, faith, and humor. There’s even a little romance, that is tasteful and realistic. Oh, and throw in a search for hidden treasure and you have a wonderful Unintended Detour novel.
Unintended Detour is book 3 in the Unintended series, though it could be read as a stand-alone. Chloe is back as well as her husband, Jack (love Jack!!) as they head to the Hudson River Valley to celebrate their second anniversary in a mansion resort called Stonehall Estate. The book starts off on New Years Eve of 1930 with a robbery gone bad where a treasure goes missing and then pivots to the present day the week after Christmas. Chloe and Jack are thrown in a bad situation where weird things are happening at Stonehall Estate, including a dead body. Can they help figure out the villain and find the treasure?
What I loved about this book was the mystery and the setting. There were plenty of red herrings and I loved learning the legend that DL Wood created. I had no idea who the villain was and even though I figured out in advance where the treasure was hidden, it did not deter the journey that DL Wood took me on. It all comes together perfectly. And what makes her a fantastic writer is all her descriptions of scenes and the action. You feel like you are there with the characters experiencing all the things that they are.
I wouldn’t classify this as a cozy mystery but there are a lot of cozy aspects that are done really well; from the food to beverages to the weather to the clothing to just the overall atmosphere. I felt like it was a perfect read for winter and even autumn. Drink some cider or cocoa and eat some s’mores in front of a roaring fire as you read this!
There is a lot of great faith aspects as well. The theme revolved around patience and how sometimes we are in a season of waiting for answers from God. It was a great reminder to: “Trust in the Lord, with all thine heart, lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways, acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”
DL Wood is an author I always rush to read when a new book come out. This one did not disappoint and I devoured it in only two days. Well done!
I received this book courtesy of the author in exchange for an honest review.
This was a great series, the first books I have read by this author. It was different from most series of this kind in that all 3 books were about the same couple.
Unintended Detour in my opinion was the best of the three, though all 3 were awesome reads. The plot and setting were great, and the decades old mystery that Chloe was working to solve as the unknown bad guy was also working on added extra suspense and made the book all the more interesting. I won't give spoilers away, but will say the 6 year old twins Molly and Ben also added a lot to the story.
A lot happened in the book, and the author did a great job of keeping the bad guy's identity a secret til the last minute.
I discovered something that surprised me. I always thought Franklin D Rooselevet's middle name was Delanor....and the author put it Deleno. I thought she was wrong. I was :)
Defintely interested in reading more by this author
You know when you start a book and you are immediately hooked? This is one of them. Despite it being book three of the series I wasn't lost on this story. There were mentions in which you can tell there are other books but it wasn't hard to pick up the story. There is a 100 year old mystery and the whole book you are trying to figure out if it's going to be solved.
This is the first book I have read from this author but it will not be my last! The storyline was great and the characters were incredible. The twists and turns just kept you reading and guessing. Great suspense and the romance was good too!
I received a copy of this book through Celebrate Lit. I was not required to post a positive review. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
I truly enjoy a story that isn’t predictable. Reading Unintended Detour with its historic details, the 100-year-old mystery and discovering whether or not it will ever be solved, was a delight! This book kept my interest thru every chapter - I loved the twists and turns and the characters feel like friends now. Highly recommend this book to all my friends. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09HFXW593/ #UnintendedDetour #AuthorDLWood
Unintended Detour involves a cold case that took place at an estate during the Great Depression. However, the stolen goods were never recovered. Fast forward to the present. Jack and Chloe are celebrating their 2nd wedding anniversary at a resort that Jack's father owns and is about to be opened. Someone is doing his or her best to sabotage the opening of the resort, which happens to be where the cold case occurred. This was a great mystery and cold case, and I enjoyed the backstory of what led up to the robbery. I also enjoyed Jack's friend from UnIntended Target making an appearance in Unintended Detour.
This book is a must for fans of mystery. I loved how the story caught my attention right away and had me invested in each character. The elements of the mystery are very well written and I loved learning about the mystery of the historical resort. I felt like I became a sleuth as I tried to solve the mystery of something that happened in 1931. Can you imagine sifting through papers and artifacts for this time period? I wanted to be in the room helping so I could be the one to solve what others have tried years to do.
The author does an amazing with the cast of characters. Each one was well defined and vital to the story in some way. Chloe was such an inquisitive person and knows just the right questions to ask to further her search for the truth. Just as she started getting close to the truth, someone would get injured or disturb the papers she had collected. Going to the resort with her husband to celebrate their second anniversary doesn’t seem to be quite what they expected.
What really grabbed my attention is how Chloe wanted to make sure that the truth was told to perhaps bring good from something that was tragic. I loved her attention to following every lead and never giving up. There are other characters in the book that are also helping her but I don’t want to give too much away. It was so hard not to read ahead to see if Chloe had solved the mystery. I had a list of suspects and reasons they may be guilty. The author does include faith in the book and really focuses on how Chloe needs to wait on God and let His plans guide her.
The ending is extremely well written as pieces start to come together. I was shocked at who was behind everything and how Chloe was able to finally solve the mystery that so many people had tried to do for years. It has been a pleasure to read this book as the author masterfully put a mystery together with subtle hints and a paper trail that shares a young woman’s hope to help others.
I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit . The review is my own opinion.
I enjoy reading Christian Romantic Suspense so I figured I would give Unintended Detour a try. Unintended Detour is the first book I have read by D.L. Wood. I was initially drawn to the book’s cover design as it definitely nailed that allure of mystery and suspense. The book summary confirmed that suspense is what I would find in the book.
I loved that the book focused on a timeframe set in the past but also kept current events alive without a lot of jumping back and forth you see in some books/movies.
I enjoyed being drawn into the story trying to figure out the “who done it” and “why” questions that arise with suspense. Admittedly, I was wrong with my assumptions on more than one occasion. I even mumbled at times, “darn, just when I thought I had things all figured out, D.L. Wood, you got me again!” The thought just confirms my strong desire to read more of her books. In fact, she has two earlier books in the unintended series that I will grab. Unintended Target is book one, and Unintended Witness is book two.
In addition to the suspense aspect, I appreciated that the author included God and faith in the story. It is constantly refreshing for characters to reference God; it makes them more real to me.
If you are interested in reading a Christian Romantic Suspense with a whole lot of twists and turns, then this book is for you!
I highly recommend Unintended Detour. I give it 5 out of 5 stars. Note: I reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received through Celebrate Lit. I was not required to write a positive review, nor was I compensated for sharing my thoughts. I am disclosing this per FTC regulations.
Sometimes the nicest people in a book turn out to be villains and there are plenty of very nice people in Unintended Detour. In fact they are all quite likeable and no one would ever suspect them. Or would they?
And sometimes God fulfills the desires of the heart in very unexpected ways. While Chloe tries to fill her waiting hours while on a planned relaxation visit to the grand opening of her husband’s family’s new resort hotel, she jumps in and makes herself useful. Their visit is marred by multiple destructive events as well as a mysterious death and unexplained accidents. As Chloe works to put together an historical exhibit for the grand opening, she begins to find a few clues to an unsolved mystery from the mansion’s past. With the lives of herself and others she loves in danger, Chloe presses on bravely.
Although Unintended Detour is not quite as suspenseful as earlier books by this author, I thoroughly enjoyed following Chloe and Jack through their multiple adventures. The plot was tightly woven with hints dropped along the way but never enough to give anything away too soon. I really love being surprised by the true culprits and this book was full of surprises. Just when I thought everything had been revealed, up popped another suspect!
Lovers of Mystery/Suspense will definitely want to pick up a copy of Unintended Detour. I for one cannot wait to read the next installment.
I voluntarily reviewed a digital copy of this book provided by Celebrate Lit. A favorable review was not required. All views expressed are my own.
Unintended Detour is the third book in The Unintended Series. This was the first book in the series that I had personally read. While there were mentions of previous events that made it clear to me that this was a part of a series, I didn't find that I was lost or that not having read those previous books impacted my enjoyment of this particular story one bit... and enjoy it I did!
From page one, I was drawn right into the mystery from the past. The story is told primarily in present day time (I believe only venturing back to the 30s just two times, including that initial introduction), but oh it drew me in with it's tale of treasure and ghost stories and secrets. I found myself unable to put this one down wondering what secrets would be revealed next. There were so many twists and turns to keep me guessing--- some of them I saw coming and many that I didn't. This one certainly kept me at the edge of my seat. I could not get enough.
Mixed in with all the mystery there was also a good message about God's timing as well, which I really enjoyed... and I felt like it was tied into the story beautifully in a way that made sense and came across very naturally. I believe this was the first book that I had read from this author, but after reading this one, I can say with certainty it will not be the last!
**I received a complimentary copy for consideration. All thoughts are my own.
This is my first read by author Wood and this is actually the third in the Unintended series. With that being said, there seems to be a couple of years that have passed between the second and third books. Even though this is well into the series, the author does a good job bringing us up to date so I really did not feel lost.
Chloe and her husband are looking forward to a romantic getaway, just the two of them, from the stress and cares of life. Chloe needs to unwind but it appears that once they arrive at the luxurious hotel, which is also the family business, that that dream will be put on hold for awhile. Little did they know that they were stepping onto an estate that is steeped in mystery and a whole host of secrets that the reader will get to unravel along with Chloe.
This estate goes back to 1930, the depression is hitting, and the poorer people are starving and men are desperate. What happened on one particular night seems to haunt the estate for years to come. I really enjoyed this story and I liked author Wood's engaging writing style. Another author to add to my list.
I was provided a copy of this novel from the author. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.
Unintended Detour is the third book in a fun series. It’s filled with suspense and some love and romance but also has mystery to solve. I loved it!
This is definitely a series that you need to read in order. If you don’t I feel you’re going to be lost because you don’t have all the back story. I don’t want to give away too much because then you’ll know what happened in the first two books too!
Let’s stick with Chloe is newly married and getting a fun honeymoon at her husbands parents newly acquired resort. What she doesn’t know is that she’s now gotten into a mystery she must solve before they all end up dead. Somehow it’s connected to something that happened over 100 years ago.
Can she solve the case before the case solves her? Wonderful read! Definitely read the whole series in order so you can get it all. I read book one, waited impatiently, read book two, more impatience, and then now finally I read the conclusion!!

Unintended Detour is written by D.L. Wood. This is book three in the Unintended series. This is the first book that I have read by this author. I have not read the other books in the series. This book can be read as a stand alone - but I would like to go back and read the other two books so I can get to see the characters from the beginning.
This is a suspense book with a historical twist. I was drawn in immediately. I love the way the author intertwined a 100 year old mystery and present day - and it all ties with a hotel that Jack's family recently acquired. The Stonehall Estate opens the book in 1930. There is a robbery that goes bad and a treasure that goes missing - and has never been found. The author brings you back to present day where Jack and Chloe are experiencing a lot of weird things going down. There is a lot of trying to connect the dots, a lot of action and suspense.
The characters are well written - I will go back and read the first two so I can see the characters from the beginning. The story line is intriguing and unique. I enjoyed the first book by this author. I received a copy of this book through the Celebrate Lit blogging program. All thoughts are my own.
D. L. Wood has done it again! I lose sleep every time I start reading one of her Christian romantic suspense books because I just can’t put it down until I’m finished. You’ll love the third installment of the “Unintended” series and I’ll bet you’ll also be up until the wee hours trying to figure out the ending. And, just when you think you know who the killer is, the plot takes a twist, and you’ll start second-guessing the “who” and the “why.”
In “Unintended Detour,” the story begins with a 100-year-old secret and wraps up in the present with a solution to that mystery. However, along the way, unexplained mishaps, murders, and suggestions of the haunting of Stonewall Estate Resort, where Jack and Chloe Bartholomew are on a second romantic honeymoon, leave the reader wondering what is going to happen next. Will Chloe be killed because she’s getting too close to discovering the truth about the robbery and the related death of a young girl in 1931 at the resort? I highly recommend “Unintended Detour,” as well as every one of this author’s books. You won’t be disappointed.
I enjoyed the way this book incorporated history into a modern-day mystery. It kicks off with a 1930 robbery at a New York mansion party with Gov. Franklin D. Roosevelt in attendance. The loot has lain hidden since that night. Now the mansion has been transformed into a luxury hotel, but problems continue to crop up and danger too. This makes for an exciting story, which takes readers through thrilling ups and downs and twists and turns—way beyond the confusing maze on the property. The characters jump from the page like actors in a thrilling movie as they try to solve all the suspenseful threads. The author did a fine job creating the cast and plot, which never lets down as it races toward the conclusion you can’t wait to reach but don’t want to end. This is the first book I have read by this author, and it stands alone, but it will make you want to read the others if you like exciting suspense. I received a copy from Celebrate Lit. All opinions are my own.
I was drawn into this story right away by the real-life characters with real-life struggles. I love a story like this that keeps me on my toes with twists and turns. Then a big smile when I think things are wrapped up, but then another surprise pops up that eventually brings another turn of events and a bigger smile.
This is the third book in “The Unintended Series” but it could probably be read as a stand-alone book also. For those of us who have read the previous two books but have had to wait a few years in between release dates for this book to come out, there is a sprinkling of bits of information to remind you what has gone on before, but not so much so as to distract you from this story … just enough to jog your memory.
Well done!
I was given a complimentary copy of this book from the author for my honest review.
Unintended Detour by D. L. Woods is book three in The Unintended Series. Having not read the previous two books, this was an easy book to read and pick up where the others left off. However, there are events and people mentioned from the previous books so to get the full story it is best to read them in order. This story is fast moving and filled with mystery and suspense. I just love the parts that deal with the history of the resort and those that lived there. I enjoyed the theme of being in a time of waiting for God to answer our prayers. I enjoyed the characters in the story as well, especially the children and the part they play in the mystery. I enjoyed reading how Chloe threw herself into a project at the family resort when she should have been relaxing.
I received a complimentary copy of this book, this is my honest review.
Reading this novel was my introduction to Wood's fiction and I was pleasantly surprised. While it is the third in a series, it read really well on its own. Chloe is a good heroine. A history enthusiast, she is the perfect person to solve a mystery from 1930. But as information about the tragic events from the past come to light, current deadly events are triggered. Chloe is a capable amateur sleuth, uncovering secrets layer by layer, putting her own life in danger.
The plot is a bit complex, as evidenced by the lengthy denouement, but it held my interest throughout. There was a twist at the end I didn't see coming and a bit of suspense. It is a good mystery that makes me want to go back and read the earlier novels in the series.
I received a complimentary digital copy of this book through Celebrate Lit. My comments are an independent and honest review.
There is only a fantastic read to be gained by this story, but a lovely moral to the story as well. This book works as a standalone, but it's part of a very good series. Chloe has been through it, so has her husband, Jack. The loss of baby is a hard thing to deal with. I love the mystery, and the clean romance read, but for this book, I most loved the faith based message. I also really liked starting in the Great Depressing, the 1930's and then bringing into the current time frame. That was so well done!
Back to the message, when you find yourself on the path you didn't expect, the detour that wasn't planned, but everything points to that being the direction you are supposed to go, you go there.
This is a wonderful read.
My digital copy came from Celebrate Lit. This review is my own and contains what I think about this book. A positive review is never required.
"Unintended Detour" by D.L. Wood is the third book in the series. Yes, I have read all third and I say read them all but if you haven't read the other two, you could still enjoy the story.
I really like how a past robbery and the past are woven into a story that kept me reading till the end. There are surprises that I really didn't see coming. I was drawn to Ben and Molly from the beginning and I am really glad that the ending was so better for them than the beginning.
There is a faith element of waiting on God in this novel .
I don't know if there are other novels coming in this series but if there are I will be reading them.
I received a complimentary copy from the author and Celebrate Lit and these opinions are my own.
Jack and Chloe are celebrating their 2nd anniversary and decide to enjoy one of his dad’s resorts before it opens. Mysterious events and “accidents” have been happening and there is a lost treasure from long ago. Riley makes an important appearance too! Will they figure it all out? Will the treasure be found? Who is responsible for all the problems? I really enjoyed the journey to the end of this book. Chloe is blessed because Jack “not only brought her love but introduced her to the faith that had made her whole”. Surprises throughout make this a really good book! It’s helpful to have read the prior books in the series, but not necessary.
Chloe and Jack planned a getaway to a refurbished manor house for their second anniversary. They never expected to land in the middle of a mystery surrounding a long lost treasure, death, and possibly a ghost. As Chloe researches the history surrounding the mystery clues pile up and she may be getting close to the truth, but could she become a target? This book is perfectly paced with a great balance between the suspense and romance. The characters are engaging and pulled me right into their lives. I recommend every book in this series. They just keep getting better. I was given an ARC courtesy of the author. This is my honest review.
Love these kind of books and this one was really well written. It is in a series but can be read as a stand alone just fine. This is the kind of story that grabs you from the start and just doesn't let go. Thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish.
I liked that the characters weren't one dimensional but were really well developed and easy to get into. The story flowed well and I enjoyed the guessing and not knowing. Overall it was a good book that I thoroughly enjoyed.
5/5
Thank you to the author/publisher for the review copy of this book via Celebrate Lit. I received this book in exchange for an honest review and the opinions stated above are 100% mine.
Jack and Chloe Bartholomew desired nothing more than to celebrate their 2nd wedding anniversary at one of his family’s newest boutique hotels. But sabotage, a murder, and more pull them into the drama from the past.
I loved learning about the people and events from the past, who,e getting to know the characters in the present. The author masterfully weaves a story that drew me in to plot. So if you enjoy stories that combine the past with the present, while developing amazing characters and more, check out this book for yourself.
I received a complimentary copy of this book, but this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.
Although quite different from the other two novels in the series, I really loved this book! By different, I mean in several ways. For one, the plot is driven by a historical subplot, which is fascinating and quite believable. For two, there is not nearly as much character building, and honestly I missed it, but I understand that we don’t really need it in this installment. For three, the danger does not seem quite as thrilling. For four, some of the plot points seem a bit too contrived; not as organic as in the other two. Overall, though, it was truly lovely! There is plenty of room to have more books and spin-offs, and I’m very hopeful we will have some!
Will tired of the misery, the celebration of new year at the mansion The food the glamour of wealth in the inside, plans he wanted. Jack and Chloe on a second honeymoon, their plans changed. Finding mishaps, murder, the haunting’s that have plagued this place. Chloe digs into help finding decades of secrets and tragedy. A stand alone story filled with suspence and romance and faith. Woven around the secrets of this old estate, well done and enjoyed Given ARC for my voluntary review and my honest opinion
Absolutely loved this book - I thoroughly enjoyed books 1 and 2 - you have an amazing gift for storytelling, DL Wood! But Book three - Unintended Detour, I think just might be my favorite!! I never share my books with my husband but this one I kept bringing him up to date as I read and he was so intrigued - asking questions. It is such a clever and brilliantly thought out story - I do hope there is more to Chloe and Jacks story! Absolutely brilliant. Thank you DL Wood- more please.😁
This is a wonderful addition to this thrilling series! Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start. Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believable. Great suspense and action with wonderful world building that adds so much to the story. Such a thrilling read that I couldn't put it down. Can't wait to read more of these. Recommend reading.
I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review.
A robbery in the 1930's at Stonehall Estates by Will Rader. No one was supposed to get hurt, but a guard fired a gun at Will and he fired toward a window and Lily was killed. He got away with a bag of expensive jewelry and hit it on the property. Many people have hunted for it and failed. Jack and Cloe decided to do a second honeymoon at this estate. They got more than they bargained for. Murder, assault and strange happenings. The author keeps you guessing. A great mystery.
