I dragged out reading this as long as I could in the hopes that book 23 would finally release by the time I finished, but alas.

I have a bad feeling that the current arc might last through volume 24. It's not on par with the Spirit Tortoise arc, but it's definitely not my favorite.

I skipped a bunch of these since by what's covered in Season 2 of the anime, my interest in the series drastically started to wane. I somehow managed through book 8 despite it being (thankfully) shortened to one episode in the anime, but after that—even though Season 3 is turning out much better, I just couldn't keep my attention span on the subject matter.

So I missed quite a few important events, including , but for the most part I can sort of suss out what happened without needing to read it for myself.

The problem is this is, to my knowledge, the last book, but as of this writing, I'm halfway through it, and all they've done is tinker. Like, just messing around making things, or playing with the arbitrary levelling systems that work on pure belief. The new (to me) characters aren't particularly interesting and haven't done much but contribute some banter, and the old characters... well, Raphtalia in particular is a broken record around Naofumi, heh. Ren (Sword Hero) is still moody about having been this teenage edgelord, though he's... improving? I don't know.

I'm going to be a little mad if it doesn't ACTUALLY end with this book, though, like with the "last" Alcatraz vs. the Evil Librarians (although, I like that one, whereas Shield Hero is dragging out like Yusagi was struggling to meet a word count).

(post-completion update)
So, I played myself with the fact that this volume is the latest, and came out in 2019, with me here thinking that means it's the final volume, ever. NOPE, guess Yusagi just spent the time on like The Reprise of the Spear Hero or something in the interim, something I'm emphatically NOT interested in starting. So this absolutely doesn't resolve ANYTHING but instead starts a whole new chapter of the saga that I just want over with. It's even worse than the "entire book spent in an endless labyrinth frozen in time" (book 8 mentioned above), because at least that had some fun parts. As it is, the book breaks down something like this:

copy of book denoting approximate breakdown of content: ~50% 'tinkering', ~25-30% 'pre-fighting', ~20-25% 'actual battle'

That is, so much of the book was spent on putzing around that it doesn't even feel like a "Such-and-Such Hero" book at all. It may as well be called "I Was Summoned to Another World and Accused of Committing Heinous Crimes, but Then I Cleared My Name and Now Just Spend All My Time Playing With the Video Game-Like Power-Up Mechanics While Waiting Around" or something. It almost started to get interesting with the "pre-fighting" section, but that was mostly their allies were injured, so Naofumi pulled a completely new way of healing OUT OF HIS ASS and managed to heal their unhealable injuries... then spent time levelling up so they could fight back against the ones that attacked.

Although, even the ACTUAL fight scenes, I found myself kind of skimming. Books really don't lend themselves well to action sequences, or not in a way I can follow along very well, and this is even worse than others at that, I feel like.

Not really recommended unless you want to support the anime continuing, though I have an idea that will keep going regardless.

Finally. FINALLY. I am completely caught up on Shield Hero books. I mean, these things may only be 250 pages long or so, but there's still 22 of them. So, we've got our peeps trying to get themselves out of time travel shenanigans, and the bad guys attempting to block them from getting out of time travel shenanigans. And really, I'm kind of pretty checked out on this storyline. There are so many better stories that could, and have, already been told with these characters and setting. The one good thing that has come out of this storyline is that it's given some of the neglected background characters a chance to shine. Apparently there are several more books awaiting publication, but the Japanese publisher is sitting on them for some reason. With the second season of the anime having finished up not too long ago, now would probably be a good time to release those out into the world to capitalize on the visibility the new season has given the series. I mean, I'll probably not read them for a while as I'm a bit burnt out on Shield Hero atm, but come on. Basic marketing, people. You don't even really have to advertise. The anime has already done that for you.

Really happy that the series has shifted a bit away from the rinse and repeat storytelling that it had fallen into. Almost don't want this arc to end. It's been refreshing so far. Also new RPG battle systems and elements being introduced this late in the game?! I'm here for it!

Finally taking on gods

Great pace and kept me engaged.. The light banter towards Naofumi from his team keeps going. Enter a new dragon right at end
