A Jaine Austen Mystery #6

Death by Pantyhose

Rate this book
Freelance writer Jaine Austen has never been able to resist the siren call of an Eskimo Pie, just like she can't resist renewing her romance with Andrew, an old crush. With her bank account hitting new lows, she's also just agreed to write jokes for Dorcas, a stand-up comic who throws her pantyhose into the audience as a punch line.
Not only is Dorcas's act a bomb, she is heckled by Vic, a gorgeous fellow comic. Naturally when Vic is murdered with Dorcas's pantyhose and that same Dorcas is standing over his dead body, the police arrest...Dorcas. They figure it's an open-and-shut case, although Jaine figures no killer can be that dumb.

But when Jaine sets out to find the real culprit, she is distracted by one dating disaster after another with Andrew--and she may not see the dark side of comedy until she faces the business end of a gun and a cold, deadly grin...

In this sixth book in the Jaine Austen mystery series (one of my favorites), writer Jaine Austen falls on tough times and is forced to take a not so lucrative gig writing jokes for an unfunny stand up comedian whose punchline is pantyhose. Unfortunately, someone turns up dead and Jaine feels obliged to help find the killer. Also, while Jaine’s love life is heating up, her nemesis and competition is out for blood (I absolutely cackled at some of the scenes in this one.) As always, Prozac the cat and Jaine’s emails to her parents make for wonderful interludes between the sleuthing.

Death by Panty Hose is #6 in Laura Levine's Jaine Austen mystery series. There is so much to kvetch about with this series-the predictability of both plot and dialogue for starts-that I'm going to simply by-pass the whole process and say:

I like this series.

I'm not sure why but it's mildly addictive. Like some not-very-good-for-you cellophane-wrapped concoction that you buy and complain about (as soon as you've finished scarfing it down). And then buy again.

I like Jaine (with an i). I like her cat Prozac (actually, Prozac may be the most fully-realized character in the series-and as a cat-lover, I mean that in the best possible way). It's all kind-of sit-com funny, relaxing, and undemanding.

So if you hate sit-coms, you probably won't care for this series.

I completely understand your point of view.

I just happen to enjoy sit-coms. At least for a couple of hours worth a week. I like to have cheap laughs, They make me feel good.

As does Laura Levine and her just-this-side of total-loser heroine, Jaine.

Death by Pantyhose by Laura Levine is the 6th book in the Jaine Austen Mystery series. Needing money when her corolla is stolen, Jaine takes on a job to write for a comic, Dorcas, whose signature is to throw her pantyhose into the audience at the end of her act. A fellow comic is killed with a pair of her pantyhose and Dorcas is arrested for the crime. Another funny and entertaining book, although it is hard not to feel sorry for Jaine with all the disasters that come into her life. Plenty of LOL moments are provided.

Laugh-out-loud fun mystery. This is a fantastic series with a heroine who is flawed but totally lovable. Jaine Austen is one of my favorite characters. I love the emails she receives from her parents who are in Florida. You must pick up this hilarious series!

This book is laugh-out-loud funny. Jaine Austen’s wisecracking, self-deprecating humor had me chuckling and knee-slapping to the last page. Humor is at the core of Levine’s writing and she delivers the best to her readers with this hilarious murder mystery, which, how do you make a murder mystery even funny? This book is the answer. I started with this one and now I’m reading them all. I’m thankful to a wonderful person who pointed me to Jaine and her world of sleuthing, witty charm and stretchy pants. Levine and I could be best friends if she wrote any of her main character’s foibles from personal experience. We could have tea with sugar and Oreos sometime and talk about our cats!

I had anecdotal based feedback about this book, and it wasn't good. I thought this book will disappoint but in fact it's one of the best mysteries I've ever read. While writing it's difficult to make a clue blend in with red herrings. Imagine how difficult it is to disguise a clue as a joke. That's awfully tough to pull off. I now feel that Laura Levine can do no wrong. The entire whole shift stick thing and the red hair incident were brilliantly thought of. The fact that this book scored even more than the last two book in the series is a big surprise. It did go that extra mile.

This series is so funny. I love Jaine and she is so funny. She does come by it naturally as the emails from her parents are always a treat. If you want a light mystery with lots of laughs and fun, these are the books for you.

“More Enjoyable, Comical Adventures With Jaine”

Has life in this chaotic world got you down? Well, I highly suggest a trip into the wacky world of Jaine Austen. We join Jaine, strapped for cash and looking forward to a scheduled job interview with Stan McCormick of “Rubin-McCormick”, one of L.A.’s hottest ad agencies. While prepping herself for the interview, she receives a call from Comic, Dorcas MacKenzie, who wants Jaine to write some new comedic material, but, is only willing to pay a paltry sum. Jaine, figuring she’ll be accepted in a new position at “Rubin-McCormick”, declines. Jaine goes for the interview, only to meet Stan McCormick (Or is it?) outside the elevator. After pleasantries are exchanged and the supposed interview has been
“Totally forgotten” on Mr. McCormick’s calendar, he invites her to lunch—and with luck only Jaine could have, her crusty Corolla is stolen and she is left, stranded, with the entire lunch check and loses her chance at the position with “Rubin-McCormick”. She ends up renting a wreck she nicknames “Wheezy” and out of desperation, calls Dorcas back and reluctantly takes the job. Jaine agrees to meet her at the “Laff Palace”, to watch her act, which happens to be a feminist, sociological comedy routine which includes ripping up her pantyhose and tossing the pieces to the audience at the conclusion. Who would ever imagine mouthy, crude comic Vic Cleveland would wind up strangled by a pair of Dorcas’ pantyhose? And who could hate him enough to do such a thing? Uh-oh--the list is long and Dorcas MacKenzie’s name is right on top. But did she do it? Jaine dons her sleuthing cap and is determined to find out who the killer is—but will she be placing herself in danger also? In the midst of her investigation, “Cute as a hound pup” Andrew Ferguson comes back into the picture from Stuttgart, Germany, and calls Jaine for a lunch date. Visions of orange blossoms and rice disappear when, (wait for the dramatic musical crescendo..) “Dah-Dah-Dahhhh”, the detested, too perfect witch, Samantha Weinstock appears on the scene. Your sides will ache with laughter at this hilarious, ongoing saga/mystery, complete with the goofy emails from Jaine’s Mom and Dad. Will Dad’s membership ever be reinstated? Will his vintage/”lucky” Hawaiian shirt be found? Jaine will always be the “Pin-up girl” for those of us who have been known to wear elastic-waist slacks and we love her for it. Prozac will always be Prozac, but you gotta love a cat who loves Cary Grant, don’t you? To all those Cozy lovers out there in readerdom, make room on your shelves for this one. As an added bonus, the Author has kindly included snippets of “Killing Bridezilla”, and “Killing Cupid”, so we can enjoy more of Jaine’s escapades. I can’t wait—bet you won’t be able to either!

Oh this was a good one, Book#6. Like Jaine, I kept guessing the culprit and was wrong every time. Of course she finally nailed him. I’m wondering what happened to the check for 10K??

Prozac only licked her privates once, as opposed to the other book where she did it every other page.

I made note this time of what I thought were dated references. I wish someone young would let me know if that recognized any of these people.
Jed Clampet, Lassie, Rudolph Valentino, Mr Ed, Idi Amin, Ethel Merton, Ozzie and Harriet. They all seem very 50’s.

Why does she buy a black lace bra to wear with her sequined spaghetti strapped little black dress? I’d say braless was a much better option!!

Best line - Who colored your hair, Sherwin Williams?

“He’ll hath no fury like a woman scorned” is NOT Shakespeare. The author and her editor should have known that. I did.

Glad to see a new murder weapon - not peanut oil or rat poison.

I think this book was well done! I loved her character, her obsession with food (which I can totally relate to) and the Cat was such a fun addition to the book!
Only complaint is that it ended really fast, almost too quickly. I felt there needed to be more closure.

Another fun book in this series. Yes, many of the ‘jokes’ are repetitive, but that’s what I find fun about the books. Cute cozy mystery too.

This isn't high literature by any stretch, but it's hilarious. As it is going off the Audible Plus catalog, I should have spent time finishing up this series instead of the boring ones I ended up listening to instead. I can read a whole book of Prozac's and Jaine's mom and dad's antics.

Freelance writer Jaine Austen’s finances are looking pretty good until a con man, under the guise of a potential employer, takes her for a free lunch and her Toyota. Now Jaine has to come up with enough funds for a new car. Desperate for money, she reluctantly agrees to become a writer for feminist comedian Dorcas MacKenzie whose signature is cutting up a pair of pantyhose and throwing it at her audience. On and off stage, Dorcas is heckled by Vic, a mean-spirited comedian who can’t keep his hands off the ladies. Luck seems to follow Vic around until the night he jeers Dorcas one too many times and Dorcas assaults him in front of a bar filled with people. Later that night, Vic’s found strangled to death by a pair of pantyhose, leading to Dorcas’s arrest. Jaine’s on the case in a heartbeat, conducting her own investigation, trying to figure out who among the many suspects offed Vic.

Jaine Austen is a fun character, a woman who can’t resist fattening foods and her moody cat, Prozac. The emails from her parents (this time over a lucky shirt of her dad’s) bump the humor bar even higher, and the characters Jaine contends with while doing her amateur sleuthing generate plenty of laughs.

This series has grown stale for me. It's always the same. I've started skipping the emails from Jaine's parents. The story itself is always the same: mildly amusing, something always going wrong, "lucking" into the identity of the killer, and little if any character growth. If the latter changed, I could probably continue, but I don't think I want to invest any more reading time into that unlikely possibility.

As in her previous book, so was very clear who the murderer is. I don't like that. I like to keep guessing till the end! While the early books were funny, it is getting painful to read about Jaine's "misadventures". She needs to grow a spine and get a life. If her life didn't revolve around her cat, her obsession with food and the TV, she would find time to get a real job and a love life!

About 1/3 of the way in. Not sure how I feel about the book. It's a very bubbly little mystery, but the continuous fat talk really annoys me.

Today it went back to the library. I have other books I am a lot more interested in reading. Maybe another day.

This one ties with Catch as Cat Can as my biggest waste of reading time in December 2008 with a dumb premise and tired sitcom-ish jokes that try way too hard. In short, don't bother.

Already this character and her actions are very much 'the same' in each of these novels. Some of her behaviors are getting annoying.

Give me a call if you're interested. My name is Dorcas. Oh, and by the way, you can catch my act at the Laff Palace on open-mic nights. I'm the one who throws my pantyhose into the audience.

A very fun, cozy, comedic page tuner mystery. And perhaps, one of the most unusual murder weapons.

Our main character Jaine Austen always ends up working odd jobs that gets her into circumstances, where she witnesses murders. She's a writer but calls herself a part-time investigator, to basically get one foot in the door of those many different jobs.

While our protagonist is certainly a flawed character, which are the best kinds am I right? But she's also very likable as well. And one of my personal favorite things I loved about Jaine how she was always concerned about F👀D. I mean, to the point of seeming obsessed lol (which I myself can totally relate because when I'm not eating, I'm thinking about eating lol) No matter what was going on or what anyone was doing, Jaine was ready for 🍽 some yum yums. Lol

And I apologize for how much quotes I'm about to use but I really wanted to get my point across. Lol And as I've already mentioned, I'm also a serious foodie myself.

What a sweetie he was to give me first dibs on desert. Once more, I gazed at the tiramisu in all it's creamy glory. I debated whether or not to take a bite. I really should wait until Stan got back. . . I'd just have a teeny bite. And then we'd share the rest together.

I took a teeny bite. Okay, so it wasn't so teeny. It was a major folkful. Sheer heaven. I couldn't resist taking another. But that was it. No more. Absolutely not! . . not for three whole seconds. Then I broke down and had another bite. And another. And another.

You hungry? she asked, following my gaze. Want a pastrami sandwich? 🥪 They make really good one's here. Oh, no. No thanks.— not after that huge lunch I'd had. Hey Mitzi, she shouted. . . Bring my friend here a pastrami sandwich. Really, I protested, I shouldn't. Then I called out to the waitress: with side of potato salad.
What can I say? I can't take me anywhere.

Now, I know I started with the 6th book. That's only because it's was a unexpected, discovery and one that really peeked my interest with such a fascinating title. But I knew nothing beforehand about these books or this author. But i'm really glad I chose to read this and honestly enjoyed it greatly.

Lastly, how can I not speak about her faithful feline friend 😻 who's wonderful name is Prozac. Jaine's cat was such a lovely addition to the entire story, and provided equally entertaining moments (if not more.) I was looking forward to every interaction with the Prozac which was some one of my most favorite & loveable scenes throughout the book.

Guess what pro? I said, scooping her up in my arms. I'm having dinner with Andrew tomorrow night! Him again? She wriggled free from my grasp. Then she strutted to the edge of the bed. Where are you going? Don't be that way, Prozac. This was the second time this week she was walking out on me. Why did I get the feeling that if she had opposable thumbs she'd be calling a divorce lawyer?

If you stay, I'll bring you leftovers from the restaurant. She shot me a baleful look. WHO DO YOU THINK YOU'RE TALKING TO? AN ALLEY CAT? 🐈 I can't be bribed with leftovers. . . Of course, she didn't really say all that, but I could tell by the angry swish of her tail that's what she was thinking

. . .She jumped on the sofa and began clawing my favorite throw pillow with a vengeance normally reserved for my pantyhose. I headed back to bed, feeling a lot like a guest on a Jerry Springer show: Single Woman Who Cheat on Their Cats and Live to Regret it.

Overall Death by Pantyhose was a humorous good time. I will also be checking out the #11 book Death of a Neighborhood Witch only because it's setting is during Hall🎃ween. However, as much as I would love to read everything in these entertaining Jaine Austen Mysteries with alot more sassy Prozac unfortunately, I won't be continuing there's just waaay too many 📚 books in this series.

The only save on this is that Brittany Pressley narrates the entire series, and without her, I would not have finished this book.

Full disclosure: I wanted to see if the books improve over time. It's full of toxic diet culture, LGBTQIA+ slurs, and a poor cat that deserves a better owner. Prozac deserves better. We deserve better.

This is the sixth book in the series about Jaine Austen (get it?!), who is a freelance copywriter and now a part-time detective. People are dropping dead in LA, and Jaine is on the case by randomly stumbling into crime scenes. This time around, a comedian is strangled with a pair of pantyhose after a comedy show Jaine attended, and the suspect is her new client, the comedian's ex-wife. Every book follows the cozy mystery formula that is meant to be episodic, and this one was the same. This will be the last book in the series for me since we have seen zero, count them: zero growth from our main character. The only thing growing is the number of murder suspects she knows. I picked up the first book and was disappointed with the toxic dialog and what could be very ed triggering inner thoughts. I've been on a kick lately of doing deep dives into how much the world has changed since the 2000s, and this book was released in 2007, so the first one was right around 2000/1. Even from 2001 to 2007, there was zero growth in the author's writing and characterization. I hoped the main character would be kinder to herself and try to find happiness in her current life versus always making herself feel small and unsuccessful.

At first I had trouble diving into this book. When Jaine was at a halt with this case, I found it a bit hard to stay interested. Once the case evolved more I was intrigued. All the different characters and it was definitely a different scene, a Hollywood comedy place, Hollywood comedians than your typical Hollywood famous movie star on set type of theme. Which I like it was different. I feel as if the love life of Jaine can be very negative and seeing the turn of events for her and Andrew just a little bit was nice to see towards the end of the novel. As any Jaine Austen mystery the turn of events is what keeps my eyes glued to the pages of the end of the book. I would of never guessed Raegan hiring Hank. Along with Hank setting up Allison. For a minute the author had the Spiro looking like he was guilty of murdering Vic. But overall this was a good book.

Jaine gets herself into weird situations. She needs to develop a bit of self confidence. Her father needs to be reined in. Imagine confronting a stranger on the street and accusing the guy of wearing your favorite shirt [Mom gave away some of his clothes to Goodwill] Cute, fluffy read.

Jaine gets a chance to write for a comedian. It's a tough gig for Jaine as just getting from Point A to Point B is a challenge. Actually her life is full of great material. Her cat Prozac is exhibit A and then there's her neighbor Lance, her best friend Kandi, and her clients provide a multitude of hilarious situations. Unfortunately, Jaine's new comic client (Dorcas) gets busted for murder when they are just getting started. Time for Jaine to put on her P.I. hat. I must confess that one whole star of my rating is added due to the expert narration of Brittany Pressley. When I listen to Ms. Pressley's performance, I can visualize Jaine Austen so vividly. While the stories themselves are a bit formulaic, I keep coming back for more on audio.

This is the 6th book I have read by Ms. Levine...it was unbelievable humorous and laugh out loud funny.

The suspects in this story were deceives and unpredictable, so was the story, itself. At one point, I thought Jaine was actually going to get killed or voliently hurt...but as always, she seems to find a way to get out of harrowing situations.

I desperately wanted her romance with Andrew to grow and continue. Also, I love the stories from her parents... so outrageous funny and realistic....

I am excitedly looking forward to reading the next story in this series and always, highly recommend Ms. Levine's books...😂 😅 😋
