I am living a lie. No one knows who I really am. Letting someone in could be devastating for my family. For the most part, isolation isn’t a hardship. I haven’t been looking for love or any kind of serious relationship. But then I met Logan.
I tried to keep my distance. He won’t let me. Logan is gentle, kind, and loving. Everything I never knew I needed in my life. He’s also a cop—exactly the kind of man who’d never understand my truth. So, while he has shared his deepest, darkest secrets, I keep mine hidden. Too bad I can’t keep my heart locked away, too. Because now I’m falling for a man who can never be mine. Not truly, anyway.
How can I ask him to be my future when I can’t even let him help me survive my present?

Heart-pounding romance. Unforgettable heroes. Sizzling happily-ever-afters—with a side of suspense that'll keep you up way past bedtime.
I dreamed of being a writer as a kid but took the "safe" route: journalism degree, advertising career, MBA, corporate gigs at Chase and Universal. Then in 2020, I said screw it and published my first book. Twenty-five books later, I'm living the dream.
I'm also a mom to two teenage daughters who are perpetually mortified by my career choices. My husband's an entrepreneur whose latest product is Nampons (yes, it rhymes with tampons and yes, it's for nosebleeds). Between my spicy romance and his biz... we've cornered the market on parental embarrassment.
My books feature tough characters facing tougher choices, compelling suspense, and storylines that'll make you think. But no matter how dark things get, my people always choose love.
This was the first book I've read by the author so I wasn't sure what to expect. But I enjoyed Cali and Logan's story. It was enjoyable with a bit of suspense and mystery. Their story definitely captivated me and kept my attention the whole time. I was just so into it that I finished it in just one sitting. I'm definitely looking forward to reading more from the author.
First - I really loved this book! It was a rough start for me and I'm not sure I would've continued if I'd downloaded a sample from Amazon. Since I received a copy through HiddenGem ARCs (for an honest review) I'm delightfully relieved I didn't give up! By the end I loved Logan and Cali but initially she was standoffish (for a reason) and he was like the freakin' Riddler with his incessant personal questions. It's a slow build but Cali's personality suddenly came alive and together they made a great couple. The reason why she's hiding on the island is teased during the slow buildup and I liked it went in a nontraditional direction yet also topical and extremely important to where we are in the world. The climax between Logan and Cali was dramatic and angsty. Since Goodreads isn't currently updated that this is part of a series (it's book 3) it makes a lot more sense about the two other couples but in no way did I feel like I was missing anything. I'm looking forward to the next books in the series that looks to be more about Cali's world!
Since this was the first book, I have read by Isabel Jolie I didn’t know what to expect. All I can say is the more you read Cali and Logan’s story the more you get hooked. Secrets can sometimes destroy a relationship. Cali was keeping something from Logan, but she felt she was doing the right thing. Because he was a cop, she felt he wouldn’t understand. But Logan was the first guy she allowed herself to feel something for. Her feelings toward him were genuine. Even though she kept her secret what she felt for Logan was real. She gave him all of herself. But what would happen if and when he found out her secrets. Would he understand and forgive her? First Light is an enjoyable read. The more you read the more you find out about Cali and her secrets. Always wondering what will happen next and what Logan would do when he finds out her secrets. A story that will have you guessing until the end and a story worth reading. I was especially excited and pleased with the epilogue. This may have been my first book by Isabel Jolie, but it certainly will not be my last.
Cali's got a big secret, one that will almost certainly make her boyfriend, Logan, kick her to the curb when he finds out. He's on the right side of the law, and she's...not exactly. She just didn't realize how much it would hurt when he looked at her with such anger, so much coldness. Will he ever forgive her?
Wow, I have to say, I wasn't expecting this story to turn out the way it did. I knew Cali had a secret, but didn't expect all the suspense surrounding it. But I like the way everything played out, like Logan and Cali together, even though I sometimes had issues with Cali's extreme naivete. Still, though, the story is well-written, and the romance and the suspense were balanced really well. I can't wait for more from this author now.
When the walls are high 4.5 It's a great story, full of twists and turns. Cali is divorced and in hiding from everyone, she is on the alert, which catches the attention of Logan, the police chief of their small town, also divorced, and attracted to Cali. Their story is at once tender, hot, but also complex and moving, especially with all that Cali goes through, and the consequences of her choices to protect her brother Erik, whether or not he takes the risk to let Logan approach her. It's a romance that starts slowly, but then has no downtime.
This book shows how you can think you know someone but be completely off base about them. Also, just because you find something out about someone doesn't mean they are a bad person. This book keeps you jumping trying to figure out if certain people are good or bad. I enjoyed the interaction with Logan and Cali, and how they eventually get through the rough patches and have their happily ever after.
What a Book! My first time reading this author, and I am hooked. Without giving too much away, everyone needs to read this book. The writing, the characters, and the secrets! The suspense, the steam, the tension, and more secrets! I absolutely will read more books by this author.
Thank you to the author for the advanced copy; this is my voluntary review.
Pretty slow. The climatic ending with the two main characters was kind of abrupt too. Logan’s description of how could so smart Cali be so dumb kind of rang too true for it to make sense.
“It felt like we’d been lovers for years, not hours. And I knew with every fiber of my being, that I wanted to be with her for years to come.”
First Light was an engaging, steamy romance filled with secrets, suspense, an overprotective brother and lots of swoon worthy moments. I read it in one sitting, it was definitely a page turner, the tension kept me on my toes, always waiting for the other shoe to drop. The quiet little island life driving in golf carts and ATV’s would be a dream. The instant chemistry between Logan and Calli was chefs kiss 🤌🏻 I loved how safe she felt in Logan’s arms, he was so sweet and supportive.
“Some steps in life feel enormous, but when you actually take them, you realize it’s just one step.”
💫Read if you like •Small island setting •Dual POV •Ex Military •German shepherds •Hottie in a uniform •Age gap •Secrets and mystery •Lost in translation •Forbidden romance of sorts

I was given a free ARC on Hidden Gems in exchange for an honest review. This was definitely one of the better books I've read lately. It has a great story line, solid characters, and not very man cons. This story takes place on an island off of North Carolina. This island is unique in that its a tourist trap with rich residents and no cars! Such an odd addition where the entire time all the people were driving golf carts or ATVs. It was fun though, kind of like a weird fantasy of mine - to drive a golf cart around an island, going on two wheels around corners. You know that kind of thing.
So main girl, Cali, has all kinds of weird secrets surrounding her brother and the things he got into. This is explained pretty fast so no real spoilers. Immediately a guy notices her again even though it's been quite some time since she came to the island. Logan, hot name with a hot bod, 10 years older than Cali. Logan is an army vet and retired detective. He's in charge of Public Safety on the island...public safety because it's not even big enough for a police department. In a little town I live close to the Sheriff is also the Coroner. Super weird but I mean, if you have someone with the skills for two jobs...why not?
The chemistry is great between the two - sparks and all. The relationship comes on pretty fast but through a series of slow dates with real conversations. It was so surprisingly engaging and realistic. That is how you make a quick get together feel slow burn and natural. Cali has a family emergency that takes her the hospital in Seattle. This is usually the part where I put a fun meme but it's too damn sad. Logan surprises her and is genuinely there for her. He's kind and helpful. It's explained that he understands how tiring the hospital is and the kind of support people need there. I've never had an author really understand hospital life and after being there recently myself for family, I was moved almost to tears. We'll move on past this but Logan...is the dude. I admit it was slightly weird that he showed up for her that soon but I kind of get it. Crisis either tears you apart or brings you closer. Picture Let's bring up something happy now that I've piqued your future broken heart. The sex scenes. Magnificent. Sometimes the names of parts were a bit silly - but that's always hard because names for sex parts are always a challenge and funny. I mean, I'm a bit immature in that I can't say penis without wanting to laugh so there you go. The sex scenes were realistic and engaging. Super hot, well done. It was definitely equal in terms of pleasure which was great to read because that doesn't happen as much as it should. Though you see it with female writers more than male - in my experience. It does get X rated for sure so be aware before you read. The reader definitely let us know Logan and how he's grown as a person the last two years on the island. I related to Logan a lot and I enjoyed his character. Cali was less...visible. Her character development didn't really happen, she was more just starting to become aware of hos invasive her brother was and getting upset about it. Picture This leads me to my first and only big CON! Cali Cali Cali. Cali is super smart. She's a linguist with a fantastic active lifestyle and a beautiful dog. She's multi cultural and all about family. Cali was seriously great. All up until the point....that she still is helping her brother. They make a point in the novel when Logan doesn't believe her - he mentions that she's just too smart to be this naïve and well...stupid. I whole heartedly agree! And even in the end when we find out the changes her brother goes though...it's not enough for me. Cali describes her mindset as very grey and that Logan's is clearly black and white. I have to say for me...I'm more of Logan's mindset. I do see shades of grey everywhere...but this one is simple for me. Cali's brother is a criminal. Period. People say cybercrime is a victimless crime. More and more that technology develops...it's not victimless at all. Mass miss information is being spread via the web every day that costs people their lives. I just couldn't get behind Cali's naiveté and really utter stupidity. I do have to say...while that con is a big one for me...I still liked the books. The story and the characters saved it. It ends on a very HEA which is a nice tender feeling... and yet it suggests that there will be a series? There is even a story about Eric. Maybe I'll feel differently about him once I read his story and his narrative. It always is easier to get on someone's bandwagon when you read through their head. Final thoughts. This is a great read. Quick, engaging, realistic, a tad sappy. The author clearly did a shit ton of research on cyber crime which was really appreciated. It was explained simply and easily and even though I knew a lot already - I learned more.
Would I recommend this book? HECK yea. IF romance is your genre. Would I buy it? Yes definitely actually. Solid solid four stars.
Cali “Cecilia” Lai and Nym moved to Haven Island, North Carolina, about a year ago, not by choice. It was by proxy of her twin brothers' doing. She finds herself living under a veil of lies, looking over her shoulder, and wanting to believe her brother. Especially when he says it will only be a little while longer before he can get her out of her current situation. Her faith in him is waning since she has been there a year already. When Poppy pops over. She gets her highly trained Nym to stand down. Using the command Sit and Stay with a hard “S”. Although, all commands are done in German.
When she sees he is following her order, she opens the door. “Are you ready? I’ve got the cooler loaded.” Poppy pointed a well-manicured nail at her red wagon with oversized rubber wheels. “I am. I picked up some chicken tenders and made some brownies.” “Oh, my word. Hello, doggie. Can I pet her? She’s a German shepherd, right?” Nym sat at attention, lips down, no growl. He wouldn’t attack unless commanded. “He’s safe.” “What’s her name? Or did you say he?” “Nym. He’s a boy.” “Such a gorgeous doggie. Where’d you get him?” “My brother gave him to me.”
I shuffled toward the front door. “Gabe has been talking about getting a dog. Is he good about keeping pace with you when you run?” “The best.” Even for a day at the beach, she's going to have to be on guard. It will be half-truths or a full-on lie. It just might be an omission with a quick diversion to head the conversation in a different direction. The first is telling Poppy to hold up while she locks her door. Knowing she’s about the only one on the island who locks their door. Each month, on the night of the full moon, residents and vacationers gathered on East Beach for dinner in the sand.
I’d watched for the last two months from my deck. Yesterday, when Poppy cornered me in the market, I was too tired and slow to think of an excuse. Before us, a crowd of people congregated on the beach for Howl at the Moon. Poppy frantically waved her arm in the air. Her fiancé, Gabe, smiled. Standing with him were Luna, Tate, and Jasmine, a family I knew well. My edginess eased. I wouldn’t count Luna or Tate as personal friends, but I’d been tutoring their adopted daughter Jasmine for well over a year, and we’d grown close. When Poppy let go of the handle and the wheels of the wagon holding the ice chest began to sink.
That was when a tall, attractive, bearded man approached, to help her pull it. “You didn’t. I’m sorry, it’s just, do you know these guys? I can’t let you walk away with the food unless I get confirmation of identity,” she joked. She didn’t recognize him at all. “Sorry. I thought you knew me. I’ve seen you around the island so often.” “You have?” “Wow. Way to maim a man’s ego. I’m Logan.” “And yes, I’m friends with these guys. I’m glad you finally made it out for a good old-fashioned Howl at the Moon.” What she doesn't know yet is that he is the sheriff in town. And makes her brother extremely paranoid. And tries to forbid her from dating him.
Welcome to their meet-cute. This story has so many twists and turns. Ups and downs and made her believe there were true dangers or at least Erik made her believe there were. She missed so much with her mom because of Erik.
First Light is the third book in Isabel Jolie's Haven Island series- this book was beyond fantastic. And while it is a part of an interconnected series, it is in no way necessary to read the previous books as this book does very well as a stand alone. But with that being said the series is interconnected and the characters from the first two books are featured quite a bit so you might find yourself curious about them as well.
I'm a big romance reader and tend to gravitate towards more light hearted rom-coms but something about Isabel's writing and character building always peaks my interest and I get sucked right in. I really liked Logan. He's that genuine good guy that's happy to be a friend and lend a hand and doesn't shy away from his scars of relationships past. He comes in and is just so thoughtful and caring and once he starts to develop feelings he wears his heart out on his sleeve for Cali. Cali was much more of a mystery. She tended to keep to herself despite all the best efforts of some of the other locals on Haven Island. But slowly she started to open herself up slightly to her small group of friends and to the possibility of a little more with Logan. But she is still harboring secrets and maintaining lies.
First Light is filled with suspense and twists and turns throughout the story- but you know what else it has? Heat! Logan and Cali are fire together. And it's that fire that I think gives Cali the nudge to take back some of the freedom in her life. The suspense woven into the story though- I had a hard time putting this book down to deal with real life because I just couldn't stop thinking about what was going to happen next. I love how intricate Isabel's details are- like the first book in this series we are living in a post covid world but there are still those little remnants of it that come up. But just the amount of research and thought that went into the details of Cali's secret life helping her brother- it felt so real and factual like instead of reading a work of fiction I was reading something more.
Another fantastic read from Isabel Jolie- and already I'm thrilled at the spin off series that was hinted at the end!
I started this book thinking "oh, it's been while since I've read a romance with a side of mystery, that'll be nice!". I'm just saying this to show I may have had expectations already a bit high, and so when the book doesn't completely relate to the image in your head, well, you end up disappointed.
Let me also tell you it's the first time I'm reading a book by thie author so I actually had no idea about her style or the overall context to this book if there was one (I found out it's part of a series, but I believe each book can be read as a stand-alone).
Let's get to the book. At first, I was a bit bored, I thought it took too long for something really interesting to happen. Sure, the two main characters meet up, but still, it felt really slow, so it took me a while to really get invested in the book. It might have to do with the author's style which bores too much unnecessary details for my liking. I mean, it's set in a contemporary world, I don't need to know each daily thing. But then things sped up a bit, both in terms of the romance and mystery, you get to understand more about things. Also, it's a dual point of view book, so you get both sides of the story. I usually love this kind of writing, but at times I was anxious to get one specific point of view instead of the other (which, in itself, isn't bad, it also gets you invested in the book). In the end, I found the resolution to be super quick and easy, I was expecting some more time and things to happen, especially considering the hurt that was caused.
Overall, I'd say it's an ok read, I wasn't too overjoyed but I did want to read until the end, from the point things started to get moving. I'd say to get your own opinion, and maybe read an excerpt beforehand to see if the author's style matches what you like.
I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving a free copy from Hidden Gems.
This is my second Isabel Jolie book, the first being Lost on the Way. Ms. Jolie's characters are realistic with all of their flaws and merits as they survive life's battles. In this case, Logan, a former Chicago police detective, has survived a bad divorce and is moving on at a slower pace in Haven Island as a Public Security Officer. Cali, on the other hand, is living a lie in isolation and loneliness as she protects her brother's unethical and illegal activities waiting to have her chance at normal. Normal will have her paying a price for happiness.
First of all, I want to say that Logan is a keeper. He is so kind and thoughtful toward Cali as he slowly woos her and brings her out of her shell. He also flies across the country to be with her during a tragic time in her life. As for Cali, I am not her number one fan. She is a brilliant translator and tutor who is extremely naive about her brother's criminal activities. She's helping him hide things for goodness sake. She is compassionate and truly cares for Logan, but she intentionally lies to him knowing it would be unforgivable due to Logan's past. If you ask me, she needed to grovel some more. Don't worry; there is a happily ever after. It just seemed too rushed and neatly tied up at the end for me. By the way, I didn't like Cali's brother Erik or her father either. They just up and left the country leaving her behind at such a horrible time. Who does that?
I did find the topics of cybercrime and criminals using fake profiles in social media to be very fascinating and very real in our world today.
Overall, this was an intriguing romantic suspense with forbidden love and a difficult secret to keep.
Thank you to Ms. Jolie for giving me the opportunity to read this book with no expectation of a positive review.
This was the first book by Isabel Jolie and I wasn't sure what to expect but I love Cali and Logan's story. Cali went into hiding for her protection because of what her brother had gotten involved in. He sent her to a remote island for her protection, she tries to stay secluded but people on the island have other ideas, including becoming her friends.
Logan is the first guy that Cali has let herself feel something for. Logan is a cop, and Cali felt like he wouldn't understand what was going on. She hated hiding the truth from him, but she had to protect her brother. Logan is a guy with a big heart and shows that to the people he cares about. When Logan finds out about Cali's secrets he feels betrayed and ultimately tries to cut her off, but its not possible for him and he has to find out the truth from her. The chemistry these two characters have is strong and immediate.
I loved these two characters, I loved that they were realistic and relatable, and that they listen to each other even with the outside forces trying to tear them apart. It was great to see her brother being protective, sometimes overly so but they found a common ground and made it work as siblings. The story between Logan and Cali will put you on an emotional roller coaster with the ups and downs, but it is very worth it when you see the beginning of the rest of their lives. I for one cannot wait to read the next book about Cali's brother and see what he has been up to.
Received ARC in exchange for voluntary honest review from Grey’s Promotions
First Light is the first time I’ve read anything by Isabel Jolie, and I’m glad I did. Her storytelling is interesting and thorough, and she was able to create compelling characters.
The third in the Haven Island Series, this book features Logan as the chief of police on a small North Carolina island and Cali, a transplant from Seattle working as a tutor. Both are relatively new to the island with Logan as an ex-Chicago cop having gone to Haven Island after a painful divorce, and Cali being on the island for a whole set of other reasons that she shouldn’t share with anyone. This story is rife with tension, suspense, and romance.
This book is well written, and Jolie was very detailed with each character’s perspective. There’s a lot of backstory discussed which slows the pacing of the story, but it does eventually pick up. Because of that, I’d give it closer to a 4.5-star rating, although I did come to appreciate getting to know the characters’ motivations so well.
I really liked the main characters, especially Logan. He was just so sweet and genuine. And the way Jolie wrote the pain he went through from his divorce and the reasons why had me feeling like I got to really know and feel for him. I found myself wanting Logan and Cali together just because I wanted them to be able to find happiness together.
Logan and Cali’s story is suspenseful, and the characters will keep you reading. First Light is a good read for anyone looking for an exciting romance.
Thank you soo much Isabela and Greys Promotions for sending me a copy of your book to read and review.
This book seriously had me hooked from the beginning. every time I thought I had a hold of what would happen something else happened to change my mind.
This is a part of the Haven Island series and is the first book of this author that I have read but I certainly will be reading more.
Logan is a safety patrol officer on the island of Haven. He moved there after his divorce needing time to recoup and get himself back to where he felt he needed to be. He is tall and handsome and has eyes everywhere always aware of what is happening on the island (or so he thinks) he is soo kind and caring but he has another side to him that he keeps hidden from the residents. he is a man who doubts himself after he finds out his ex is pregnant but this man will steal your heart.
Cali was moved to the Island by her brother as a safety precaution. Eric is big in the dark world of cyber coding and has got himself into trouble which subsequently has put Cali in danger. When we meet Cali she is a complete recluse, keeps herself to herself and has soo much security in her house that no one can understand why. Especially when she lives on an island like Haven where they don't even drive cars.
This story is soo wonderful I loved reading every second of it. the author really captures you with the storyline and the characters. if you haven't checked it out already you need to.
My Overall Rating is 4 1/2 💋💋💋💋😘 My Passion Rating is 4 💋💋💋💋
Cali’s whole life has been uprooted by her brother and his need to keep her safe. Not fully aware of what her brother is into, Cali agrees to be relocated to the east coast away from everyone she knows and loves. With only a highly trained guard dog to keep her company, Cali slowly settles into her new town but keeps everyone at arms length until Logan. Logan’s world is black and white held together by honor and duty. Still struggling with his past and all the hurt from it, Logan reaches out to Cali determined to get to know her better and move forward together.
The connection and chemistry between Logan and Cali was so evident once they opened that door. Logan played no games and was completely open and honest about his past and his struggles. Cali was the one to hold back and be guarded-she had her reasons no doubt but it really hurt their relationship. Of course, it took an act of Mother Nature to really put things into perspective for them and I’m so glad because they fit so well together. First Light reads really easily and quick. Any fan of small town romances will throughly enjoy this book!
Thank you @greyspromo and @isabeljolieauthor for this eARC in exchange for my honest feedback.
Boyyy did i love this book? yes! Now this was my first book of Isabel Jolie, and I'm on my way to read another one. I did genuinely like her writing, and of course i would've wished there were a few things more developed, BUT you could feel Cali's pain, you could feel Logan's love for her and even his pain and that to me is an amazing book. I gotta say, I was even engaged with the main plot of the book. I didn't want to stop, I was rooting for Cali despite her secrets and all. I wanted her to thrive and their relationship to conquer it all. HEA guaranted!!
Cali, a "recently divorcee" who moved to an island to start again. Logan, a divorced man who used to be a detective in a main city, and moved to the same island to regroup. His adult life hasn't been easy, and her life was. She had amazing parents, amazing twin brother (dumb if I do say so myself. He had a horrible divorce, and he didn't feel confident in his partner or any woman so he hasn't dated anyone. He meets Cali one evening, and he fell for her, she was intriguing and she made him want to be over his insecurities in woman.
My least favorite character was Erik, i hated him with a passion and that to me was a good book. LOL. When a book makes me feels things, good and bad, is a good book.
Tropes: Age gap. Heroine "in danger", Male MC falls first. Cop.
Romance:♥️♥️♥️ Spicy:🌶🌶 (it was really classy and not smutty)
If you enjoy books with suspense and mystery that includes a beautiful love story then this is the book for you! Spend some time with Cali and Logan and their friends and family and learn Cali’s secret that she tries so hard to keep hidden.
Cali tries to live a very simple life. She lives with her dog and tends to keep to herself. It is for her own safety and for those around her that she does this. That is until one night when she meets Logan. He throws her carefully put together life up in the air as they find friendship and then so much more.
Logan is trying to find his next step. He works hard and has been assigned to the small island that Cali lives on to try and refocus. Logan had no idea that while doing that he would find such a special woman.
I really love the connection that these two have. Logan is so sweet with Cali and tries to get her out of her shell not realizing that doing so will put so many in harms way. Yet as Cali realizes the heart doesn’t understand to stay behind a wall. Knowing that Logan was in law enforcement scared Cali even more due to the secrets she had hidden away. Yet, they found that their connection was just too strong. Can they survive the secrets once they are revealed?
I adore this book. The concept of it was so incredibly genius, and I liked how Jolie has included politics and crime into First Light.
Cali is a wonderful heroine, I loved her braveness and her loyalty. The love she had for her family, especially her brother was so rare. But of course, nothing tops the love she has for our hero. I loved how she wasn’t scared to defend herself and she knew wrong from right. How Jolie portrayed her character was magnificent and I loved her from the very beginning.
Logan is quite literally my dream man. He has his flaws and imperfections but he is so wonderful, not just to her but to everyone else around him and his country. He was incredibly selfless and extremely caring. I loved how he wasn’t afraid on letting Cali know he wanted her, and he was going to get her.
Their love for each other was beautiful, I adored how they found comfort and safety in each other’s arms. Just reading about them being cuddled up on the couch made my heart melt. I really loved how Isabel Jolie forwarded their relationship.

Thank you to the author & Grey’s Promotions for sending me an ARC of this book.
First Light is one adventure that has a bit of mystery with suspense, then add in the small beach town and the hot cop that can't be ignored. Cali lives in a small beach town with her guard dog, Nym. She has secrets that keep you hooked because as her story unfolds, a little comes out here and there that will have you hooked and wanting to know more. Logan has former military, cop from Chicago and in charge of safety in the small town and after his divorce he has kept to himself, until running into Cali peaks his interest. Cali tries to avoid Logan, but fate has other ideas. Cali knows it's best to keep things as friends, but the attraction and don't forget the swoon factor of Logan, makes it harder for Cali to avoid. Logan and Cali take us on one interesting adventure that will have you hooked and wanting to know more about Cali's situation and past as well as what will happen between her and Logan. These two will have you on one intense emotional rollercoaster, but worth the twist and turns that you don't see coming to find out if these two will make thing work or if their pasts will ruin it before it starts.
The suspense here was killing me. I enjoyed Cali and Logan’s story very much but the build-up to finding out the who/what/why of the mystery was almost too much. Cali is smart and independent, very likeable but maybe a little too forgiving when it comes to her twin brother, who’s gotten her into a bad predicament. Logan is sweet and sexy but the ex-special forces police chief of the island knows Cali’s hiding something, he just doesn’t know what it is or why.
She’s been forced to build walls to keep her brother’s secrets from the world, even with her own parents and her loneliness is heartbreaking. At least she has an awesome furry sidekick to keep her company, although he’s not enough. I can’t say much because spoilers but this book is definitely worth a read.
Cali Lai is trying to maintain a low profile on Haven Island as her brother, Erik, believes that someone may use her to locate him. Logan Callahan moved to Haven Island after his divorce to become the Chief of Public Safety. Prior to his nine years with Chicago P.D., he had graduated from West Point and served in the military Special Forces. He was ready for a slower pace and a chance to move on with his life. Meeting Cali had him feeling that maybe she might be the one. He notices that she is extremely protective of her personal life and her home security is over the top for this island. Is she afraid of something or someone? As she finally lets him into her life, he receives information that her brother is someone of interest to the NSA. Cali is as genuine as she can be, with Logan, while trying to protect her twin. I had not read anything by this author and I really enjoyed her characters and story. I look forward to the previous stories about the characters who were mentioned in this book. I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation from the author. (by paytonpuppy)
Rating: 4.5⭐ This book was an amazing read. The book was a slow start for me but later on picked up so well after the 10th chapter. Cali was a closed person, didn't really mingle with everyone but one person entered her life and made her open up to him. Logan is a law personnel, like FBI and there was a lot of mystery and suspense involved around this couple.
Eric was protective of Cali to tell the least but the things he did to kee her safe was understandable but a little too extreme. Cant wait to read his story
The ending kept me wanting for more. This is a must read for any romance book lovers who look for a certain amount of mystery. They were perfect for each other or would the secrets be the end of them?
This is a beach read, small town romance, neighbours to lovers romance with loads of twist and turns and mystery.
I loved the balance they had, romance and mystery. It was a treat to read it. The place this story was set up, Haven Island, whoa wouldn't I give whatever it takes to stay there.
Not everything is seen in the first light, but sometimes it is the sharpest light of all
First Light is the third book in the Haven Island series and it is another wonderful addition to it. This story is about Cali and Logan and it is a romance that will have your heart swooning but then racing fast. Cali moved to the small coastal community of Haven Island and has kept to herself a lot. Logan is one of the local police officers who came back to Haven Island after serving in the military. He is open, friendly, sweet and is more than interested in the newcomer when he sees her. They start a relationship but Cali is hiding something from Logan which she does not want him or anyone to know about. It could put her and others in danger if it does come out. This is a beautifully written book with a enticing story-line and wonderful characters. I really enjoyed reading this book and getting lost on Haven Island for awhile.
I received a copy of this book and am leaving my honest review. My opinions are all my own.
Lying, subterfuge, anger, trust issues all in glorious form here.
This story between Logan and Cali has a lot of lying and subterfuge. Cali has been sent out east to a little island to sort of hide. Her brother and twin is a major hacker. He got her a house and it has more cameras than a 1980’s camera store. She speaks several languages and is an interpreter. Eric doesn’t think his sister is safe so he is hiding her.
Logan is ex-military. His marriage fell apart and he is licking his wounds on this small island by being sort of the police. His military buddy is working for the NSA. Eric tells Cali not to get involved but they are just two (supposedly) divorced people becoming friends.
I didn’t like Logan. He is not trusting and flys off the handle. No second chances with him. He isn’t willing to listen when his temper rears up. The whole scene at the station irritated me. Cali’s brother Eric bothered me as well. No idea if he is a good guy or a bad guy.
An enjoyable read with a bit of suspense, a few steamy scenes, and some heartbreak.
First Light starts out a bit slow as the author sets the scene. I enjoyed the town of Haven Island, even if I did find the neighbor, Poppy, to be a bit too bright and bubbly. There was just enough interaction with the secondary characters to add a bit of depth to the story. The main characters had an instant attraction to one another, even though neither seemed inclined to act on it. The sexy police officer isn't sure he's ready to date again, and Cali is hiding a big secret. I loved the interactions between the two, and Cali's dog Nym was all kinds of awesome. My heart broke for the couple when Cali's secrets came to light, and I worried for a moment they wouldn't get their happily-ever-after. I did find Cali's character to be entirely too naive when it came to her brother, and Officer Logan let her get away far too often without answering his questions. While I understand the necessity for both, those parts came across as a bit too unbelievable for me - even for fiction.
*I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This book had a slow start. The reader finds out a lot of information about the H, Logan, pretty early on. He is reluctant to be in a serious relationship due to heartbreak in his previous marriage. The secrets of the h, Cali, are more complicated than a previous relationship. The reader is kept in the dark regarding these secrets for most of the book. Her brother is a big reason for her secrets, and she needs to be protected, but I was really unsure of the extent of her involvement with his issues. However, at about 75%, I couldn’t put the book down. There was a lot of action, explanations, a big storm, and answers to all of my questions. Then there was an unexpected, but wonderful HEA. I have read many books by this author, and I will continue to do so. I enjoy her writing style and her characters. I received an ARC of this book for free from Hidden Gems, and I am voluntarily leaving a review.
