University Press returns with another short and captivating book – a brief history of Afghanistan.Afghanistan is an enchanting country of vivid extremes - stunning beauty, grinding poverty, alpine glaciers, violent cruelty, copious tea, barren deserts, and warm hospitality. Living as they do along the ancient Silk Road, the Afghan people and their rich cultures have been indelibly shaped by centuries of trade, invasion, and conflict.Afghanistan has been called “the graveyard of empires” for its uncanny ability to resist foreign occupation. Afghans have successfully seen off the invading armies of Alexander the Great, Genghis Khan, the British empire, the Soviet Union, and the United States. Yet Afghanistan remains one of the poorest and most violent countries in the world – and that was before the Taliban regained control of the country in 2021. But there are glimmers of progress. And there are reasons for hope. This short book peels back the veil and provides a brief glimpse into the heart-warming, gut-wrenching, awe-inspiring history of Afghanistan – a glimpse that you can read in about an hour.
I found this to be engrossing: so much has happened to the people of this country. Deep down, and it has always been so, the real people are kind and hospitable.
A quick guide to what Afghanistan (and its invaders) have endured over many centuries of struggle and strife. One thing is certain, however, and it is that no country can ever impose their rule on this barren piece of land. Never.
Concise and interesting narration of the background and present precarious condition of this suffering nation
Intriguing, fact filled, and relevant account of Afghanistan's history and present condition. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to become familiar with one of the poorest and war-impacted middle eastern nations. A little more on its culture would further enhance the book.
The Brief History of Afghanistan provides an in-depth view of a country that has been invaded by many nations. These nations used Afghanistan as a ploy in their desire to gain a strategic stronghold between three continents. This book spans the life of the nation through August 2021.
In a book this brief it is impossible to cover all of the intricicacies of a nation with such a long, diverse past. Covering a country in as much detail as it deserves would require a book much longer.
