*** 3.5 Stars!!!***

This was the third book about the ancestors of Ian Mackenzie and his brothers. I did like learning about the original family members and the history of how they met their wives etc... Even though I enjoyed it, I did find at times the story dragged a bit. If I am being honest, I definitely prefer the early books in the Mackenzie series. It’s hard to top Ian and Beth’s story! I have even reread theirs a few times! I guess it’s really hard to beat!

I am happy I have continued on with the series but it is starting to get a bit dull. I do look forward to the two Xmas books that are out now! I have just one more book in the series, and then I can finally read the holiday books!!!😬

The Devilish Lord Will (Mackenzies Book 10) follows Will Mackenzie (brother of Alec in Mal from The Stolen Mackenzie Bride and Alec Mackenzie's Art of Seduction) on his adventures to his HEA. He is kidnapped by Josette Oswald, a lady with whom he's had an interesting and on-again, off-again relationship, and imprisoned in a ruined castle with a horde of Highland ladies! They need his help, and only Will's deviousness can accomplish their mission to save their husbands, sons, and brothers captured at Culloden. But Josette's greatest worry is that Will has already stolen her heart.

I hope you enjoy this entry in the trilogy of the Mackenzie's 18th-century ancestors!

2½ stars.

➕ What I liked :

Rather interesting mystery.

Scottish hero.

“Older” main characters (30’s)

➖ What I disliked:

The chemistry and romantic build up was lacking.

A little too much focus on the mystery and not enough on the romance or the main characters.

Verbose.

Dragged.

The issues/problems were too easily/quickly resolved.
(The mystery and the villains etc.)

Somewhat disjointed.

Bland and repetitive.

The main characters are rather formulaic…. in both appearance/looks and personalities etc.

I received an eARC at no cost from the author, in exchange for an honest and voluntary review.

I love Jennifer Ashley. I've read some of her historical romances, some of her mysteries and I keep finding myself entertained for hours.

First of all, I have to admit this wasn't the first book I read in 2019. I started the year with a book that just wasn't doing it for me. And so, when The Devilish Lord Will arrived in my inbox, I almost jumped with happiness - better times were coming!

As usual, I was not disappointed. This book is full of adventure, and romance, and family and friends, and courage, so much courage.

Josette (Josie) and Will have a great chemistry, it worked so well with the story line of the book. Both characters are stubborn, and they both know what's best for one another - of course we all know what that is, right?

It was fun to see different personas for Will and Josie, and at the same time, never lose track of who they really are. It's difficult to sometimes not lose ourselves in the variations we create, but Jennifer Ashley managed to showcase this experience wonderfully.

This book happens after the Jacobite rebellion, and when the English think all the Mackenzies are dead. We know they aren't and, we readers, want Kilmorgan, their ancestral home, back on its feet almost as much - if not more- than the characters.

And so, it's great joy that we follow Will and Josie's adventure looking for French Gold, for a way to bring Kilmorgan back to its former glory, and to help families that were broken apart but, most importantly, to find each other and stay together.

A book full of adventure and romance that keeps us readers happy for hours and leaves us wanting for more.

I will not rate this because heroine is a single mother and the child is not the hero’s child and I’m a weirdo but I want to say that Jennifer Ashley is a wonderful flawless author and I’m sure those who read this will love it!

4 1/2 "Love me some Mackenzies" Stars!

I loved it as I do all the books in this series. Will and Josette were perfect! He is wild and reckless and untamed, but so very loyal and determined. She is adventurous but serious and fiery and sweet. Josette actually stole the show in this one for me. She's a ride or die chick! In an 18th century lady-like-ish way. You have to have a bit of spirit to hang with the Mackenzie men, and Josie had it.

This one was a bit slow in some places. The intrigue could have moved a little faster in pase, and there was some repetition. But I really enjoyed visiting with the Victorian era Mackenzie ancestors. This has been a wild bunch for a long time. I hope they will be a wild bunch for a long time to come. Happy reading!

Ποιος δεν λατρεύει τo fake relation trope?

Αυτό το βιβλίο είχε περιπέτεια και πολλή δράση, μια απίστευτα δυναμική πρωταγωνίστρια που σου κλέβει την καρδιά και δύο εραστές που πρέπει να είναι μαζί αλλά η στιγμή δεν ήταν σωστή. Μήπως τώρα είναι;

Always wondered if any of Mal’s siblings would get their own book. Any book with references to the battle of Culloden has my heart. Was happy to find out about Will’s. Really loved Mal’s.

Last book in this trilogy but book 10 in The Mackenzies & McBrides series, it tells the story of how Lord William Mackenzie helped his family return to their homeland after the Jacobite risings.
This is one of my favorite series ever and so is the author but I’m afraid this book was only ok and not as exciting nor romantic as the rest of the series. I was several chapters in and still didn’t know where the story was going and I felt lost somehow. It took me a long while to really get into it and although it did get better, I still didn’t feel any sparks between Josette and Will, not even with their shared past. I don’t know, perhaps because of everything that was going around them, what with the treasure hunting, Josette’s blackmailer, and Will on the run, it felt as if the story didn’t leave much room for romance.

*I received this book at no cost to me and I volunteered to read it; this is my honest opinion and given without any influence by the author or publisher*

The problem with legendary books aka DIKs

A moment for reflection. Once upon a time Jennifer Ashley did what a number of authors have done – she wrote a wonderful, unforgettable novel which most people love. Back in 2009 she gave us The Madness of Lord Ian MacKenzie. In my opinion that book was a Desert Island Keeper, a landmark achievement for Ms. Ashley. The Madness of Lord Ian MacKenzie has taken its place among numerous DIKs - as well it should. It has joined the ranks of some of our most beloved romances, such as Lord of Scoundrels, by Loretta Chase, Devil in Winter and Then Came You, by Lisa Kleypas, The Rake, by Mary Jo Putney – you get the point. Sometimes an author may never reach that pinnacle of “everybody’s favorite novel” success. But, then sometimes authors write that unforgettable gem which is everyone’s favorite.

I’ve always wondered how authors respond to the success of the book which is placed on a pedestal. Do they even know they have a book which is everyone’s favorite? Does it make them nervous? Does it affect the way they write their next books? Are they aware that almost every reader out there will be comparing their latest book against their most memorable gem? I don’t know the answer to those questions, I only know that I’m one of those readers who compares an author’s work against their best. When an author reaches that mountain top pinnacle, I hold all of their books up to that achievement. Is that fair of me? Probably not, but I do it anyway; sometimes consciously, sometimes not.

Which is a long, convoluted way of saying I was not all that fond of The Devilish Lord Will. I’m not saying that this was a bad book, it was just not up to the standard I expect from Jennifer Ashley. I think a lot of my disappointment is due to the fact that the romance in this story had already been established. I wouldn’t really call this a second chance romance, because I couldn’t find any chemistry between the couple. Evidently it developed in previous books – of course, I cannot remember that. And, why is that? Because those previous stories are not fresh in my memory. I have a problem remembering what happened a week ago, let alone a secondary romance written in previous books over two years ago. I just could not remember Will and Josette.

Will and Josette are already in love with each other, but Josette is tired of being hurt so she doesn’t want to luv him anymore – yeah, that’s going to work. Will wants to continue the romance, he actually wants it to be permanent. The problem with this is that Will is supposed to be dead. He and his brothers were at Culloden. Three of the brothers survived, but they are in hiding – sort of. When the story begins Will is in the process of being beaten up by the English. Josette is in the room to rescue him, but she’s in disguise. No one will be able to recognize her. In the end, all this rigamarole doesn't even matter. She rescues him and the story is off to a long meandering tale which didn't interest me.

Will irritated me. All through most of the book he had a plan. He had lots of them. He never talked about them, things just worked out according to his plan. He was in control, and never let Josette in on his plans. It was as if he was winking at everything which happened. He was cavalier about everything he did. I found him to be a pompous bonehead. Yes, I know there are other heroes out there who are pompous and I like them, but Will just didn’t seem to care what others thought. Especially when it came to the woman he supposedly luved, Josette. For twelve years he and Josette had a relationship, and he just sort of expected her to always be there for him. I just did not care for him. As a couple Will and Josette didn’t work.

Thrown into the romance that didn’t work theme was a treasure hunt for Stuart gold and Josette’s ex-lover who was threatening her. These plot lines had filler written alllll over them. They didn’t really keep my interest. I thought the hunt for the gold story line tiresome. Evidently, there was a real treasure in Scottish history which disappeared. I wondered why, since this was a work of fiction, Will and Josette couldn’t have found the gold. But oh well, that’s just me. The blackmailing lover story-line was wrapped up so quickly, one could almost miss it. Oh, the lover was actually dying, so I guess he could be forgiven his blackmail try. So, he wasn’t really evil – ‘cause he was dying. So, all of his threats really didn’t matter – sorry. Why was he even in this book?

There was a family gathering at the end, and we get to visit the three MacKenzie brothers, their wives, cousins, and children – all happy and getting ready to leave a legacy for the MacKenzie’s who were to come. Sorry to say, I cannot recommend this book.

The end of the three-book arc in this series that shows us the Mackenzies after Culloden. I wish we had a little more from Josette’s point of view and more about the first time she and Glenna were at Kilmorgan. Still, a fun book. I wish it circled back to Ian telling the story like the others didn’t.

FINAL DECISION: I absolutely loved this book. I'm a sucker for a couple who have new chance at love. This book has a deep romance and a lot of action and adventure. Loved these characters and their story.

THE STORY: Josette Oswald needs help finding a legendary gold treasure and she knows there is no one more suited for such a hunt than Will Mackenzie. Josie and Will have worked together in the past in Will's spying endeavors sometimes pretending to be husband and wife. But Josie has a daughter to raise and Will's adventures were a danger to her family and her heart so she sent him away. Now she needs his help but she also has a secret that might destroy the long friendship the two former lovers share and Will's willingness to help Josie on her quest.

OPINION: This book was my favorite of the 1700s Mackenzies. I loved the relationship between Will and Josie. Things weren't right for them in the past for a multitude of reasons and I highly respected Josie for turning Will away in order to raise her daughter. Even though Will knows he is not one to settle down, he still is an honorable man who did everything he could to care for Josie and her daughter.

I loved just about everything in this book. Will cares deeply under his devil may care attitude. His immediate acceptance of Josie's daughter and his love and caring for a child not his own is admirable. And I really liked that Josie's daughter is not merely a plot device. She is a real character here and I'm glad that we get some resolution to her story as well.

The romance in this book is so different from the usual -- we meet and in a week are madly in love and want to spend our lives together -- story. There is a real sense that Will and Josie had something special a decade ago, but the time wasn't right for them. Now the two have a new chance and are in a different phase of their lives. While both have to clear up things from their pasts, this book has a strong sense that the two can finally have a chance for the future together.

There are a lot of moving pieces in this story, but the focus is always on Will and Josie. This is a story of two people who have a decade to realize that what they have together is special and are finally willing to give in to love.

WORTH MENTIONING: For fans of the series, this book gives an update on everyone (from the 1700s).

CONNECTED BOOKS: THE DEVILISH LORD WILL is the tenth book in the Mackenzies & McBrides series and the third book about the 1700s Mackenzies. This book can be read as a standalone although I recommend that readers consider reading the two prior 1700s books because they all are connected.

STAR RATING: I give this book 5 stars. This review was originally posted on Top10RomanceBooks.com

This is the 3rd prequel/previous generation story in the MacKenzie series. It’s 1747 in Scotland, post Culloden and a treasure trove of gold lost in the Highlands is on tbr agenda. I love the MacKenzie family and so a part of me does enjoy seeing their ancestors to see their family history and all that, but I also just haven’t loved the plots and especially the romances in this trilogy of prequels. That said, the previous book in the series that follows Alec I loved. This book following Will and Josette had a lot of moments I should like but I just found myself wanting to enjoy it more than I did and the story really did drag on a lot. If I wasn’t listening to this on audio, I think I would have a harder time finishing it.

Josette was originally a model for Alec MacKenzie’s paintings, that is how she met his brother Will many years ago. Josette and Will have a past together. There is lots of deception, intrigue, spying, even posing as a married couple together. Will and Josette’s story is sort of a second chance, they were together and shared many moments with one another 12 years ago and are kind of already together when this story begins. But I just did not feel enough chemistry between them to find their romance fulfilling. I was also confused with her daughter, it seems like she’s in scenes (maybe?) but I never felt like she said anything or added to the story. I would honestly forget all about her and then at one point near the end someone mentions she’s 16, and I’m like has she been here the whole time?! Allll of that said, the writing is good and the audiobook is good. But I can’t help comparing it to other books in this series that are done much better and have epic romances.

A bit disappointed, Will isn't "devilish" at all IMO, I didn't really feel passion between them even if they're good together, and the plots with the missing gold and the heroine's first lover seem to be solved too easily and too fast.

A weaker entry in the Mackenzie Saga.

I like Will and Josette as a couple, but the treasure hunt plot just wasn’t that interesting. Nor was all the (non-sexual!) role-playing.

One of Jennifer Ashley’s greatest strengths is in how she writes family. Will is so isolated from his relations and the story is really missing that spark.

The retconning is kind of insane. Lord Will Mackenzie is dead but plain Willie Mackenzie acts as steward—in a community where it is repeatedly mentioned Will is known and beloved—raising his family right alongside Malcom’s and the oft-visiting Alec’s. And yet their descendants somehow still believe both Will and Alec died? I understand their survival was a late edition to the series, but I feel this would have been better as a separate Jacobean Highlanders series, rather than trying to shove it into the world of the Victorian Highlanders.

Will and Josette

I am so in love with the Mackenzie family. Jennifer Ashley can just keep writing about them in perpetuity. Any era works for me.

Will and Josette’s love and mutual respect just leaps off the page. For all of his wild and untamed Mackenzie ways, there was no other love for him save his Josie. This story highlights the danger and drama of their lives coupled with such a deep affection that as a reader I found myself swooning quite often as I read.

I loved the epilogue, and found it satisfying, but I have to admit that I was hoping for an Ian and Beth scene where Ian reveals Will’s coded correspondence as mentioned at the end of Alec’s book. Oh well, maybe next time?

I had trouble connecting with Will. He just didn’t seem as real as the other MacKenzie men. The chase for the gold and the spy escapades seemed a little far fetched. Maybe its just me. I do love the series, but The Devilish Lord Will is not one of my favorites. Those are The Madness of Lord Ian McKenzie, The Stolen MacKenzie Bride, and The Many Sins of Lord Cameron.

I love this series and I loved getting immersed in this family again with this book. The three books looking back at some of their ancestors were as entertaining as the 'current' family. Will and Josette had history and not a smooth one, but I loved watching them come together again and for good this time. Learning more about Will and the why of what he did was touching and a little heartbreaking - he cared so much even when he couldn't show it. Very sweet ending!

I listened to the audio and loved Angela Dawe's performance once again!

Josette and Will were great in this one. They had a lot to get past, but how much they cared about each other was not part of it. I liked how they worked together to figure things out, to make it safe for Will to stay in Scotland and for Mal to come back and be Duke. The ending was perfect, loved how the family gathered and celebrated.

When Josette needs help finding a trove of gold believed lost in the Highlands, she turns to Will Mackenzie, the most cunning, devious, and clever man she knows. But trusting Will with her secrets is akin to trusting the devil himself. They’ve worked together in the past, pretending to be man and wife to ferret out information, and the venture did not end well. Will is dangerous, and so is his life, and danger is not what Josette needs.
This is the third of the trilogy within the series that takes us back in time to the mid eighteenth century & tells the story of the third Mackenzie brother Will who along with his father & other siblings was pronounced dead after Culloden but Will, his father & two younger brothers escaped to France. I'd always wondered how & why Malcolm became the Duke & this story answers all of my questions. The pace of the book is very good & the characters are well fleshed. I particularly liked how the trials & tribulations of the Scots who survived Culloden were described, the author gave a very accurate & at times harrowing description of how a nation was mistreated. Will & Josie are perfect for each other but it's taken years for them to realise. I’ve enjoyed this trip back in time & look forward to more Mackenzie stories
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

A good continuation of the Mackenzies series during the years after the Jacobite uprising with the story about Will and Josette who have known each other over the years. After the Jacobite uprising he’d been in pursuit of dangerous secrets and of covertly hunting down dangerous men. This story centers around a huge stash of gold supposedly given by France in aid of the uprising and that disappeared after Culloden. Josette and Will are on the hunt.

“Will was a man who never stopped moving. A woman would break her heart on him. But with the confidence of the young, had believed she could weather him. She’d been wrong.”

A highlight: a sinful, decadent scene with fresh strawberries and cream.

Alas, the last half of the story didn’t hold my interest… really don’t know why. Perhaps there wasn’t enough romance tho they do acknowledge their love for each other. It felt a bit flat. I skimmed thru the last hour of reading on my kindle, then read the epilogue. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Brief review:

I liked this one better than Alec’s story, yet it didn’t quite make the 4.5 mark for me. I liked the action packed plot as Will and Josie worked to uncover the truth. This was a second chance romance with plenty of baggage and angst to go around. They are forced to work together by posing as a married couple as they uncover clues, which brought about lots of sexual tension followed by some steamy encounters. There were some sweet and adorable moments too like Will brushing her hair. There was a lot going on emotionally as they fell in love all over again. I loved how they protected each other so fiercely.

Review:
This was my favorite of the throwback Mackenzies'. I really liked Will and Josette and seeing how their relationship developed over years. I also liked getting more background on how Mal became the Duke. I really hope that we get a novella about Ellis!
