April 18, 1906 – A devastating earthquake rocks San Francisco and Templeton Morehouse fears her husband is lost forever. A powerful and compelling story from USA Today bestselling author Bette Lee Crosby

Chances were a million to one that a girl born and raised in Philadelphia would encounter a stranger from California on the trolley and fall madly in love, but that’s what happened. Templeton was not only taken with John Morehouse, but also with his tales of life in San Francisco. As an aspiring fashion designer, the dazzle of a city called the Paris of the West, with its towering department stores and European couture was too much to resist.

Despite her family’s objections, she and John are married and, on their way back to California, before the month is out. To ease the heartbreak of such a move, Templeton promises her family that they will return for a visit every summer. She fully intends to keep that promise, but as her fashions gain popularity, the business grows increasingly more demanding. The trips back to Philadelphia become less frequent and she makes foolish choices she will come to regret.

Now, when she is on the verge of having everything she’s ever wanted, a devastating earthquake has torn across San Francisco and she awakes to discover the father of her baby is missing.

With the city in flames, Templeton’s daddy leaves Philadelphia and sets out in search of his son-in-law. He’s too old for such a trip and ill-equipped for the challenges he will encounter, but he’s the only hope of saving his daughter’s happiness.
Lines of communication are down and the city in shambles, so the only thing Templeton can do is pray she doesn’t lose both her daddy and her husband.

Templeton had dreamed of being a designer since she was a child. Her parents wanted her to marry but she’d never met anyone who stirred her heart. Living in Philadelphia all her life, never travelling any distance from her home, she was astounded to meet a young man from San Francisco on the trolley she was travelling on, and before the trolley ride was over, they had fallen in love. John Morehouse was in Philadelphia for three weeks on business, then he would return to San Francisco. With the blessings of her parents – albeit reluctantly – Templeton and John married in the morning and caught the train to San Francisco in the afternoon.

Templeton missed her mama and daddy immensely but as her designer business grew and her fashion was taken up in a big way, she was busy from morning until night. When she and John returned to Philadelphia twelve months after their marriage, Templeton had a lovely three weeks with her family, but it was back into business on their return with things becoming more hectic than before. It was eighteen months before they returned to her parents but when John returned to San Francisco alone, so Templeton could have some more time, the shocking news of a severe earthquake in San Francisco rocked Templeton’s world. John was missing, telephone lines were down, the city was burning. Would she ever see her husband again?

The Fault Between Us is another exceptional novel by Bette Lee Crosby. Set in the early 1900s, the massive 7.9 earthquake that struck San Francisco at 5.12am on April 18th, 1906, has the author describing the devastation along with the kindnesses of people coming together to help one another. With Templeton being 3,000 miles away and not being able to find anything out for days on end, it doesn’t bear thinking about how worried everyone would have been. As per all Ms Crosby’s books, the heartfelt poignancy, love and caring shines through The Fault Between Us, and I recommend it highly.

With thanks to the author for my digital ARC to read in exchange for an honest review.

Bette Lee Crosby is a legend to me. I discovered her a few years back after reading Cracks In The Sidewalk. I came from someone who had read every single Catherine Cookson book she ever published. Then Katie Flynn.

Although my genres have widened out I just can’t leave behind these comfortable books of my early years of serious reading. It’s like….coming home. And that’s the kind of books this author writes for its reader. Not soppy, not unrealistic and full of real danger, real and raw emotions that I came to love is in abundance in this story.

I have just met Templeton. She’s a mind of her own but with respect. Her mind gets made up, but that’s not with stepping on anyone’s toes.

The man she fell in love with lived hundreds of miles away from where she was raised. It totally wasn’t an easy choice to follow her heart.

When the Francisco earthquake happened I lost myself completely in its pages until hubby called me if I wanted potatoes peeled for dinner!
The feelings and descriptions and toil that was coming through the pages were unraveling like I was watching a scene on a screen in my mind. That shows a good author when they can put you in a mindset like that.

Emotions, frantic worry, illness, and love, family support, comfort. It’s all here.

This gets published in October and if you’ve not read one of her books before but like the sound of this and read it, let me know. I’d love to chat to you about it.

Can it really be that Templeton married after she vowed she would never marry…well until she met John on the trolley.

Am I really Mrs. Morehouse?

A whirlwind romance and reservations by her parents and even herself followed Templeton to the altar and to California….three thousand miles from Philadelphia.

She gave up her loving family and her business, but she knew that’s what she wanted.

Things in San Francisco were wonderful, and Templeton drew designs and found a shop owner who could help her sew the dresses.

Things were looking up…she just hoped she wasn’t expecting. She couldn’t wear her designs and show them to prospective customers if she didn’t fit in the dresses.

Templeton was so obsessed with her business, that John felt neglected. She realized that he wasn’t ready like all the men of this time to have a woman with a career.

She needed to make him feel as if he were the most important thing in her life. It made her sad, but he was the most important thing in her life.

Ms. Crosby has given her readers another marvelous story with characters you will love and admire except for Charlie.

I loved Templeton’s determination to make her business work and to show the city that a woman can make it in business. Such fun hearing about the dresses and the work involved with her new fashion lines.

She then asked herself again? Could it all work if she were expecting?

It was all working out until the earthquake happened in San Francisco while she was in Philadelphia and she could not get in touch with her husband, and then she had to worry about her father because he went to look for John.

Master storyteller, Bette Lee Crosby, will have you feeling everything the characters are feeling and have you glued to the pages.

Thank you for another heartfelt, splendid book. 5/5

Another heart tugging story by Bette Lee Crosby! The Fault Between Us is the story of Templeton and the people she loves—her husband John and her parents and siblings. Templeton is a fascinating character, devoted to her family, but also independent and ambitious at a time when it was unusual for women to have a career. She has to make some really hard choices during the story, causing rifts in her relationships. Her life is changed forever when a massive earthquake strikes San Francisco, putting loved ones at risk and causing Templeton to prioritize that which is most important to her. This wonderful book will pull on your heartstrings, taking you on a journey with Templeton to find love, happiness, and home.

This was the most beautifully written novel. Captivating characters, especially heroine Templeton, whom I fell in love with immediately. I can't believe I've never read any of Bette's books before - this certainly won't be my last! I can't wait to read my way through her backlist.

This story touched me because the characters were so likeable, the writing was flawless, and the storyline just felt so unique. Fantastic story telling!

Ms Crosby continues to write amazing, thought-provoking books. This book about the San Francisco earthquake in 1906 gives us insight into what happened there and how it affected people. The descriptions of the devastation and displaced people and how the sick and hurt were cared for are amazing. The insight into how a wife and adult daughter must have felt when their husbands were in San Francisco and weren’t heard from for quite a few days. Few phones back then so most communication was by telegram. Don’t miss this edge-of-your- seat book.

I've read a few of Bette Lee Crosby's books, since discovering her by a Facebook group, and I was honoured to be asked to read her soon to be released book, The Fault Between Us, as an advanced reader.
The book centres around Templeton, a young woman in Philadelphia, with hopes and dreams. Unmarried, still, at an age where most women were settled, she wants to make a name for herself in fashion and design.
Despite her parents' anguish at their unmarried younger daughter, she forges on with her dreams and is celebrating successes, when she meets a man, John Morehouse, by chance, on a tram journey.
Love often finds you in totally unexpected circumstances, and this is one of them.
Her parents show reluctance to let their girl go, however, Templeton and John marry, and move across the country, three thousand miles away, to San Francisco.
Here, the story builds upon her settling into life as a married woman, but also pursuing her dreams in a different location.
The time-worn worry of whether to be a career woman or a mother plays its part in the story, here.
A natural disaster threatens to rip their lives apart, and this is where the story really comes to life, and the choices made affect their lives forever.
The era in which the story is set was a time when it was frowned upon for a woman to put work before family. Then, there wasn't the confidence that she could do both.
I loved Templeton's drive. She's passionate about what she loves, be it her work, or her family. The way she is torn between the two, and feeling that she might not be able to have either, pulled at my heartstrings.
But thankfully she found a partner who, after initial misgivings, was able to accept and support his wife.
I felt, keenly, for Templeton's parents, throughout the story. It highlights the fact that no matter what their age, we parents will never truly stop worrying about our children.
A heartwarming read.

Bette Lee Crosby never disappoints. Her books are not my normal genre, yet I always love them. I binged The Fault Between Us and enjoyed every bit of it.

It’s the early 1900’s and Templeton knows she is destined to be an epic fashion designer and chooses building her career over love. Then she meets John Morehouse and things change for her. She gets married and moves to San Francisco to start a new life and family and continues to grow her career in a new thriving location.

When a devastating earthquake rocks her new hone while she is visiting her parents, she fears John may be lost forever.

This book was a mix of historical fiction, romance and some great atmospheric vibes. It’s an epic storyline that I adored. Bette has a gift for telling sweeping tales filled with hope and resilience and I’m so glad I read this one.

This story is centered around the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. The story of Templeton, an ambitious fashion designer at a time when it wasn't so easy for a woman to be successful. Templeton has sworn off marriage until she meets John Morehouse and falls head over heels in love. They are quick to marry and that takes Templeton away from her home and family in Philadelphia to San Francisco where John is from. The earthquake hits and lives are forever changed. I didn't really know that much about the earthquake and the writing and setting felt so real reading this. It felt like it was happening right now. Such a vivid story and well developed characters. I was so full emotions. This is a story of love, ambition and family. This author has never disappointed me. Each new book just completely captivates me. Masterful and amazing.

Loved it! So powerful!

This is the 2nd book I've had the pleasure of reading by Bette Lee Crosby and I loved it!

This book follows Templeton Whittier from childhood to becoming an adult in the early 1900s in Pennsylvania starting her own fashion design business with her forward thinking designs.

She fell head over heels in love with a man she met in passing and after lots of convincing that she would be fine married him and moved to SF. There is a lot of first year marital issues and  fertility concerns due to her new business venture in a new town. But I want to fast forward to the Fault part of the story. They experience the 1906 earthquake and the recovery as they try to find eachother with communication down.

Living in the Bay area I have learned about the 1906 earthquake annually in CA history in school or it shows up on the news on it's anniversary date. The earthquake was bad but when they woke up to make their breakfast and didn't realize that their chimneys were broken the embers started fires that ravaged and damaged far worse than the earthquake had. They called it the Ham and Eggs fire. This one was a 7.9 that lasted almost a minute😮

Loved this book! I love the history and the characters were so human and real and had dreams that compromised their relationships until they learned to give room and support eachother. I loved the female friendships and support with her mother and the new friends she made with Denise and May Ling.

In the late 1800’s, Templeton Whittier was a young woman ahead of her time. With a passion for fashion design that began as an artistic child, she was determined to have a successful career. Whip smart and headstrong, despite protestations from her loving family, nothing could stop her and by her mid-twenties, her reputation was becoming established. Nothing could stop her. Nothing until John Morehouse stepped on a streetcar where she sat and their eyes met. It was undeniably love.

Enticed to join him in San Francisco after they are married. She settles into a happy life. A few years later, after a return trip to Philadelphia to visit Templeton's parents, John returns to San Francisco ahead of his wife. Then the earthquake of 1906 hits causing tremendous devastation. Events from this point on are fraught with tension and suspense as, with all communication disrupted, Templeton’s father Albert leaves to search for John.

As Crosby does so well in her inimitable style, this is a story that goes straight to the heart. Strong characters portray good and evil, challenges are met and lessons learned in this page-turner that is a highly enjoyable read.

There are a few authors that never disappoint and Bette is one of them. She weaves a tale of perseverance, strength, hope, and happiness of women.

Templeton is not your average young woman for the times. She has dreamed of becoming a designer since she was a young girl. She never expected to meet a man and fall in love and have those dreams tested. That is until she met John on a streetcar and they had a whirlwind romance that has them married within a few weeks and moving to CA from PA because that is where his business is located, specifically San Francisco. It is here that Templeton realizes that it is hard for a woman to do it all - have a successful career and a family. She does her best to balance work and her life with John, but she becomes consumed with her designs and calling on stores to carry her designs. John loves her, but he becomes increasingly frustrated with her. While I understand his frustration, he knew who she was and what she was like when he married her.

This story is fraught with emotion, decisions, mistakes, and most importantly love. Despite everything, the couple does have a deep love for each other and it is a matter of finding the right balance to make their relationship work. They are both tested when John returns home after a visit to Templeton's family and the devastating earthquake hits. We don't know if he survives or not until much later as we learn how Templeton reacts to the news especially since she has discovered she is pregnant. As we read about the devastation in the area and what people went through, it is not hard to sympathize with the characters and all that they endured.

I like how real the characters felt and that they didn't always do the right thing for themselves or others, but were true to who they were. I feel like the historical aspects were well researched and added depth to the story and what they endured.

We give this book 5 paws up.

The Fault Between Us by author, Bette Lee Crosby
(ARC) Expected Release Date: October 5, 2021

I've had the pleasure of reading several of Ms. Crosby's novels, and my book-loving-self has now been gifted another favorite to add to this wonderful list of stories which has touched my heart in numerous ways.

The Fault Between Us is a story that brought tears of joy and tears of sorrow, heartbreak and hope as the author's imagination, attention to detail, and ability to bring to her readers a story which will spark every emotion, is a true testament to this meaningful, heart-rending, gripping, yet tender narrative.

The tapestry woven of silken and coarse threads which creates this story, is one of beauty and tragedy that lead me to one woman's journey as she allows herself to dream along life's winding path in finding herself, her voice, her truth, and the strength needed to sift through the rubble of devastation.

Templeton Morehouse is a talented, intelligent young woman~ a master of fashion who never settles for anything less than everything, and must face the unknown in order to bring her dreams to light. It is here where she finds her confidence and her strength, along with the kindness and generosity of others as they help her to shine in ways she never could've imagined. Through it all, she finds herself a woman in love, a mother-to-be, all the while fighting to make herself known in a man's world and on to dealing with the heartbreak of not knowing whether her beloved is alive, or....

Through hardship and consequence, Templeton becomes the type of woman who refuses to allow life's challenges to dictate who she is by growing from things meant to break her, by being true to herself, by holding tightly to her family and of course, her one true love...

I thank the author for my personal, advance reader copy of The Fault Between Us, and by gifting me the opportunity of reviewing this most meaningful, powerful and compelling story that allows its reader to see and feel what is truly most important in our lives.

THE FAULT BETWEEN US by Bette Lee Crosby is a compelling and emotional story of love and family set against the backdrop of the devastating earthquake that rocked San Francisco in 1906. Templeton Whittier has a mind of her own. Unlike the other young ladies in the Philadelphia society where Templeton was born and raised who simply want to marry well and have children, Templeton has dreams of being a well-known fashion designer. By chance, Templeton meets handsome John Morehouse on a streetcar and they are soon completely taken with one another. John is a successful businessman, but lives far away in San Francisco. Against her parents’ wishes, Templeton and John get married and move cross-country to his home. There, without her family, she faces the challenge of striking the right balance between her blossoming career and her marriage. A trip back to Philadelphia to visit Templeton’s parents sets off a chain of events that will drastically change the lives of all the characters. John returns to San Francisco ahead of Templeton just before a deadly earthquake strikes the city. In the aftermath, Templeton and her family don’t know whether John is even alive. What happens next is a heart-wrenching and gripping journey that kept me on the edge of my seat. I truly enjoyed this wonderfully-written story of the love, resilience and hope and highly recommend it. Thank you to the author for sharing an early copy for me to read and review.

I loved the storyline and the characters in this book.

Templeton’s parents are pushing her to get married, but she does not want to settle. After a very chance meeting, Templeton marries John and they move to San Francisco.

After many bumps in the road, they are back in Philadelphia visiting Templeton’s parents. When John heads back to San Francisco first, they hear news of a major earthquake.

Templeton’s dad goes to San Francisco to try and find John. Along the way, Templeton comes to realize what she truly wants from her life.

Fabulous writing by the author. 5 ⭐️

Templeton Morehouse is a young, determined woman who only had her fashion design business in her sights until John swept her off her feet.

They met by chance on a streetcar, and she just knew he was the one. But, her family and business were in Philadelphia, and John was from San Francisco.

John convinced Templeton that San Francisco would be a city of great opportunity for her designs. Although Templeton doesn’t want to leave her parents, she wants to be with John and dreams of starting their own family one day.

Once settled, Templeton’s business took off, and she was busy meeting with retailers, picking fabrics, and designing. But as John promised her parents, they returned to Philadephidelpia each year for a visit.

On their visit to Philadelphia in 1906, John returned early to San Francisco, giving Templeton more time with her parents. Templeton started to feel unwell, but her mama knew better. Templeton was excited to write John the news, but suddenly news broke of a devastating earthquake in San Francisco!

The Fault Between Us took me back to the turn of the twentieth century. I enjoyed reading about Templeton’s design business and her struggle with choosing between it and becoming a mother. The historical element of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake adds an exciting yet heartbreaking element to this story. It showed me how scary life was without instant communication.

This fabulous book by Bette Lee Crosby is coming out in little over a week. I have the opportunity to preview this book and read. I’m so happy I had the fortune to do so.

It’s 1903, and Templeton Whittier is a strong and independent woman for her time. Career minded, she puts all her energy into being a fashion designer and has some success in her home city of Philadelphia. While her parents are proud of her, they despair of her ever finding a husband and starting a family. Just when it seems they are about to give up, Templeton has a chance encounter with a man, John Morehouse, who she is very attracted to. He’s a successful financier and seems to be attracted to her too. The problem is that he lives across the country in San Francisco. While her parents are initially happy for her to find someone, they are disappointed that he lives so far away and wants her to move clear across the country with him. She decides to take a risk on love and marry John and move to San Francisco with him. She wants to take her chances on starting over as a fashion designer there too..

With the promise of visiting every summer, her parents feel a little less stress about their daughter moving with her new husband to San Francisco. But as her fashion designer career takes off, it throws obstacles in her path, one of the biggest being less of an opportunity to visit her family in Philadelphia among another dilemma she faces.

But all that seems to not matter after the devastating earthquake of San Francisco in 1906. Just when she thought she was able to get all she wanted, including their first child, her husband goes missing after the earthquake. I really enjoyed this part bittersweet and tender historical fiction love story. I was sitting on the edge of my seat wondering what happened to John. I highly recommend this book.

4.5 Rounded up to 5

I can't believe I haven't found and read this author before now. Historical Fiction is a genre I've been getting into more over the last year and it has quickly became a favorite one to read.

This one took me to the early 1900s where I was lost in the love story between Templeton and John. I just love a good, clean romance and this one just melted my heart.

Templeton is as fiery as they come and I loved every minute of it. I ached with her, triumphed with her and felt her worry and sorrow as she struggled with the choices she made.

When the earthquake hits and devastation descends on, not only San Francisco, but in the hearts of those left in Philadelphia, my heart broke too. All those lost souls, and injured walking or lost....whew this author has a way with words.

I now need to go back and find everything this author has written and get my hands on them. I truly appreciate the publisher for providing me with a review copy. All opinions expressed herein are mine and mine alone.

A Beautiful Journey

This is an absolutely incredible Historical Fiction book that I didn't want to end. Beautifully crafted with an accuracy and attention to detail that set the vivid pictures in motion as I read. Character development so perfect that I was completely emotionally invested in each one. This story, while taking place over a century ago is also timeless and relevant today. It's a story of love, success, loss, dreams, hope and family. It's about the choices we make for those we love and what we should do in times of crisis. This book is so impeccably written that I rode the entire gamut of emotions. Every joy and every sorrow was palpable in my heart. The story just flowed like a river from beginning to end. What a beautiful journey it was. If you can only read one more book in 2021...choose The Fault Between Us. This is truly Bette Lee Crosby at her finest.

“The problem is love never takes sensibility into account. Your heart doesn’t stop and ask questions before it plunges headlong into something so magical you’re powerless to resist it. Love happens like a lightning bolt. It hits, and just like that your world is changed. His eyes meet yours, he smiles, and that’s when you know this is your forever.”

Bette Lee Crosby has once again written an amazing story.
Templeton has dreams of being a designer, her parents dream of her getting married.
She meets John Morehouse a business man from San Francisco on the trolley, and falls in love. They get married and move to San Francisco. Templeton is independent and ambitious. She wants a career in design, difficult choices effect her relationship.
A devastating earthquake changes everyones life. An emotional and compelling story of family and love that will tug on your heartstrings.

In the early 1900’s, Templeton was already a strong woman ahead of the times. She had her heart set on being a dress designer and she was going to make her dreams come true. Living with her family in a Philadelphia, she meets a young businessman from San Francisco and they fall in love. With her family’s blessing, she moves to San Francisco to start a family with her new husband.
Templeton longs to be a designer more than anything and after a bumpy start, her husband, John, supports her dreams. As everything begins to fall into place with her design business, an earthquake literally shakes everything she has worked for and now she stands to lose it all.

This book had all the feels wrapped into a story about family, determination and sacrifice. Bette Lee Crosby’s beautiful writing style makes you feel a part of the story and invested in the characters.

This story weaves a tale of emotions, perseverance, strength, hope, and happiness of women.

I was taken back to the turn of the twentieth century. The historical element of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake adds an exciting yet heartbreaking element to this story.

Bette Lee Crosby is a natural-born storyteller, and I love when Bette vividly describes her characters, events, and scenery in such amazing detail.

I recommend this story too anyone who loves memorable and thought provoking stories

#FirstLine - The one thing you can be certain of in this life is that nothing is for certain.

I am not sure how Bette Lee Crosby can continue to write these incredible stories. Book after book after book…brilliance. Crosby writes stories that seep deep into your heart and take residence. She writes stories with characters that are deep feeling, real and unforgettable. In The Fault Between Us you will be swept into a story that will keep you engaged from cover to cover. You will love this richly told story about hope, love and difficult decisions! A must read!!!

If the author is Bette Lee Crosby, then the book is purchased. Even if I didnt know what the book was about, I buy it. I have never read a book by her that I didnt like - no make that LOVE. And so this one was hard to put down and so, so interesting.

I would suppose we have all heard of the San Francisco earthquake that happened in 1906 and this story happens during that time. We follow Templeton and her life with John Morehouse. They marry and move to San Francisco. While Templeton is visiting her parents, the earthquake happens. He's in San Francisco at the time and this is where we encounter the love, suspense and fright of losing someone you love dearly. This was such a powerful story that I had to consult the internet and find out everything that happened during the earthquake. The devastation was brought to life by this author and I felt every heartbreak and fear that Templeton felt.

I love all her books and of course this one did not disappoint. I always look forward to reading her books. #fivestars

Well, Bette Lee Crosby has done it again. Her books just get better and better and this one is no exception. I love the character of Templeton. She is very devoted to her family and friends and swears that she will never marry. Then, she meets her husband to be on a trolley. She marries him in whirlwind fashion and move away with him to pursue her career dreams. She makes some hard choices that eventually keep her from the family that she loves so much. Her life gets so hectic and busy that she doesn't spend time with them anymore. Then, an earthquake hits San Francisco and that is the catalyst for her to see what is truly most important to her. I loved this book!!! I highly recommend it to everyone!

Another sweeping tale from Bette Lee Crosby, who masterfully transports readers back to San Francisco, in 1906, and one of the most devastating events in US history. The cast of characters is vivid and richly developed, and the solidarity of the community, under the worst of circumstances, is heartwarming. Templeton is a gutsy lady who pulls on the heartstrings with her determination, ambition, and her capacity for love. Her and John’s story is one that is sure to captivate, reminding us of the precious and yet tenuous nature of life, love, and family.
