It was supposed to be an easy a rescue mission to a research facility on a remote South American island. The science team has gone radio silent. Now it is up to Ronald Baker and his band of mercenaries to find the staff and figure out what went wrong.
Things quickly go awry when the rescue team sets foot on the island. They discover decimated boats, the dock in shambles, and nobody in sight. Yet, they are not alone. Crabs, hungry for flesh, rise from the water. With their transport destroyed and numbers dwindling, the team is forced to travel inland and take refuge in the very facility that failed to protect the dead researchers.
With limited ammo and time, the team must complete a new survive. Baker’s skills are put to the ultimate test as he works tirelessly to find a way defeat the menace who seeks to feast on his group. It is a struggle of man against crustacean. Intellect against savage instinct. Rifles against Pincers.
Michael R. Cole is an author of creature horror and science fiction. He was born in Toledo, Ohio and grew up in lower Michigan. He has a profound love for monster movies and book as well as the action genre. In addition to writing, his hobbies include martial arts and fishing.
When Ronald Baker was approached by a young woman who wanted to hire his team of mercenaries to find her missing father, he thought it would be easy money. The girl's father wasn't lost in a war zone or anything, just out of touch on an isolated research facility on a small South American island. But what Baker hoped would be a simple extraction turns into a horrific battle royal when the mercenaries are ambushed by giant, bloodthirsty crabs. Heavily armored, equipped with razor-sharp pincers, and possessed by an absolutely insatiable hunger for flesh, the mutant crabs are unlike anything Baker and his crack team have ever faced before. This is a tight, fast-moving thriller with loads of action populated by interesting characters. Michael Cole pencils in Baker and the rest of the mercenaries with short, deft strokes, so that everyone is a real personality and not just a statistic, and their female employer is sympathetic and eminently likable. You really want them all to survive and get off the island in one piece, but of course that's not going to happen. The crabs, implacable and ruthless, are great antagonists and Cole creates one exciting--and often grisly--scene after another. Definitely recommended for all fans of creature features.
4.5 ⭐ s Whoever imagined Crabs could be so terrifying? Certainly not an experienced group of former military now a mercenary group. They were so confident going into the job. The easy job of rescuing a young doctor's scientist father from a small island. He had gotten funding to do research genetically altering fruits and vegetables. His ultimate goal to be able to feed the hungry around the world. Mass destruction met them and an eerie silence.
Nothing had been spared boats, plane, buildings, homes, fences, nor livestock. Everyone was perplexed. How could this have happened? What could have done this? There was even evidence of humans being killed, but where were the bodies? Then suddenly the first Crab appeared. This was a true horror novel. A sea creature feature determining who would rescue the rescuers?
These crabs can eat a lot of meat and they love humans
I wasn't sure what to expect from this book. I mean it's a book about killer crabs for goodness sake. Of course, it was fantastic with such interesting characters that made me laugh and cry. This very talented group of mercenaries were hired to find a doctor's father on a very secluded Island where genetic research was being done. The mercenaries quickly realize that all personnel on this island have disappeared and they discover very large, hungry crabs. I just could not put this one down. I do love the books this author has previously written and I love this one too.
Pincers by Michael Cole is a fantastic creature feature read. The overall plot kept at a pretty good pace. There was a lot of tension for sure. The creature or should I say creatures are crabs and also a surprise creature. The crabs showed a non stop threat to the characters throughout the entire story. They were not just well armorers but very much dangerous. The characters in Pincers were all quite enjoyable. I really liked Wagner who at first is made out to be a bitter man but then turns into a great guy. All in all I would recommend Pincers by Michael Cole to anyone who is a fan of creature features or likes a good horror/thriller experience.
I saw The Attack of the Crab Monsters in 1957, and as a child was frightened beyond explanation. I was overjoyed to see this book available a few days ago, latched into it and read it. It is much, much better than the movie. There is consistent action throughout and it didn’t take long to realize that none of the main characters were safe from possibly being dinner for these humongous creatures. I really did enjoy it.
I went into this book with low expectations. Come on, really? Giant crabs? But, since I love Michael Cole stories, I read it anyway. I was NOT disappointed! It was a great story. The characters made me hope for a sequel, or even a series. And I learned something.... I never knew crabs had lungs!!
Ronald Baker and his team are hired for a simple extraction mission. No mission survives first contact with the enemy and this first contact is nothing they have encountered before. Giant mutated crabs rule the island and this is going to be far from simple. Good story that moves at a nice pace, with interesting characters.
Giant crabs? Let's go! This is the first book I read from Michael Cole, who I've only read good reviews, and no wonder! action-packed story, little character development, which is clearly understandable in this type of genre, and full adrenaline along! It is read in one go and It has just the right pages, without falling short or getting boring in others. For me a great book!
Dumbest monster book ever written. Physics = monster the size your hand blown up to size of a house has the same number of molecules and atoms, therefore body density of air. No danger to anyone. Book is just a string of insults between actors. Do not buy.

I love crab, but... Always great action and monsters in Michael Cole books. Great characters that make you pull for them and an ending that makes you feel good. Loved it.
