From the author of My Dawn Is Only Five Hours Away comes another powerful poetry collection that discusses the challenges of growing up and the meaning of identity.
Motion Sickness is a coming-of-age poetry collection driven by the evergreen obsession with the search for identity in your twenties. In this poignant sophomore collection, Anja welcomes readers into her motion blur—at once vivid and fragmented— and creates a bridge between unnamed feelings and youth. Filled with intimate poems and prose, Motion Sickness is a must-have for quiet moments where introspective magic coincides with casual, sudden, and thrilling escapism.
Dion Anja is a poet, author, and a lover of all things uncanny. Weaving grotesque and ravishing characters into her writing, she hopes to lure you into the chilling landscapes of her stories. When she is not writing or reading, Dion can be found cuddling with her cat or taking long walks in the forest.
Motion Sickness is out and I'm so excited for you to read these poems. This book means a lot to me as a young adult who is trying to figure out life and identity, so I hope it can mean something to you as well. Thank you so much for all your support.
I requested an ARC of this collection after reading Anja's first collection-- so thrilled to be getting more poetry from such a creative and poignant voice. "Alone" strikes the deepest within me and startled me with its sharp succinctness and vivid imagery. Overall, Motion Sickness digs into the life coping with and inner dialogue regarding intergenerational struggles, mortality, and personhood (especially when alone)-- all while being in your early adulthood. It's a fantastic read and leaves just enough space in the proverbial margins for the reader to mull over Anja's work for multiple days.
Thank you for sending me an arc copy!! I loved this poetry collection so much. Anja really knows how to put into words feelings that are so universally common in our 20s but so hard to explain and/or speak. My favourite poem was october, but the one i related the more to was honeycombed.
“it would held me captive in a sharp pang, yet I, with my words and annotated books and unseasoned hopes, was already knee-deep in developing an indifference that was bigger than my body.”
this had eldest daughter of an immigrant energy ergo i am the target audience
Incredible poetry book! I read the ARC version and loved how raw and real this book was. Dion inspired me in my own genre of poetry and writing! So glad I got to meet you Dion!
Dion Anja does it again with this even more spectacular collection!!
I really enjoyed her first book, and was so looking forward to seeing how much she's grown in the short time between the two collections. Even at such at such a young age, I feel her language is really sure of itself and she challenges the norm in her writing.
The first poem in the book old wounds / pinky promises set the tone and I was interested to see what else was in store. I loved the entire set of poems in this book, non-referential subject being my preliminary favorite.
I encourage all poetry lovers (and even those hesitant about poetry) to grab this for your shelf & enjoy the ride!
