BEWARE THE BOGEYMEN… Monsters are real. I’ve seen them. Felt them. Fled from them. Fifteen years later and I still have nightmares of the things that used to live under my bed—the diabolical ringleader with fiery red eyes who brought his friends to torment me. Crazy and unhinged, but nothing compared to the one with blazing yellow eyes who pretended to be my friend. And the worst of them all, the one with relucent green eyes, who was silent but always watching. Waiting to strike. I traveled halfway around the world to outrun my demons. My last memory of them is their taunting laughter filling my ears. Except, they’re waiting for me. Forced to return home to help my dying father, I have nowhere to hide. My monsters won’t leave me alone unless I give them what they want. They’re hungry—starving—but now that I’m grown up, they don’t want to eat me. They want to breed me. Fifteen years ago, I wanted nothing more than to escape them. But now… A part of me wants to join them—submit to them. Will I ever vanquish my night terrors, or will I just become another notch on their bedpost?
MONSTERS UNDER MY BED is book one in the BOGEYMEN series. MONSTERS IN MY BED AND MONSTERS FROM MY BED will complete the trilogy.
Bestselling author M.J. Marstens mixes romance, suspense, comedy, and sassy characters who can say whatever they are thinking because it is just a story. When she is not creating steamy scenes or laugh-out-loud fiascos, she is refereeing her four children that she homeschools. In her free time, she loves to eat, sleep, and pray that her children do not turn out like the characters she writes about in her books.
No means no. Just because you make a girl wet, does not make it not rape. The monsters are rapists and kidnappers. Pure and simple. The MC says no, then goes along for the ride saying they know her better than she knows herself. Again, the MC said no to sex … and no to anal… and no to taking the large member, but she was ignored and forcefully pushed down. She said she wanted to go home. Again, ignored. She has no rights. No say. Nothing.
I'd wanted to read this ever since I saw this was a monster reverse harem romance! I jumped on the RH train a few months ago and haven’t looked back. This was my first time reading this author and her writing was.. okay. She probably could’ve used another editor and less exclamation points but those things at least didn’t ruin the story for me.
Monsters Under My Bed is the first book in a trilogy about a girl who, growing up, had monsters under her bed. Alexis could see them and talk to them at night, but her parents never believed her about them. As she grew older, she started feeling THINGS for them, as you do for scary monsters in your room, but an incident happens that causes her to run away to another country and not return home for a decade.
Now she’s back in her hometown because her father had an accident, though she tries to avoid her house and room. She ends up back there anyway – and back with her 3 monsters, who are known as bogeymen. I really liked the background of these monsters and their world. This first book is fairly info-dumpy and is very much a set-up for the rest of the series. Still, it was pretty easy to read and follow but the thing I struggled the most with that brought the book down for me was the heroine. Alexis is kind of an awful daughter and all she’s done her whole life is run away and avoid her problems. I didn’t care for her character but hopefully she improves in future books. Also, if you’re expecting a lot of steam like I did, don’t. There is surprisingly a lot of plot to this book and the steam doesn’t really happen until a bit further into the story. Still, I liked it overall and am intrigued enough to continue with the series.
This book contains dub-con and non-con and the author doesn't give a trigger warning. In fact it's passed off in the book as if it's consentual even though the MC says no multiple times. DNF at 60%. I'm not sure if the author doesn't think it's non-con because they think that the MC's body being turned on over rides verbal non-consent. I hope not, because thats a very destructive message to pass on. There have been studies done where they measured the physical signs of arousal and compared them to whether the person actually felt aroused and it only lined up about 50% of the time in women, and 90% of the time in men. (I read this in the book Come As You Are by Emily Nagasaki, it contains references to the actual study for anyone interested) Literal proof that just because the MC was wet, it didn't mean she wanted it. Being wet or having a boner does not necessarily mean arousal, and it definately is not consent. I'll say it again, arousal does not equal consent! I hope the writer rethinks how to express this kink without implying that it wasn't rape for anyone whose body showed signs of arousal. And at least put a freaking trigger warning in, and call it what it is: non-consentual.
Literallt monsters under the bed smut, the heroine is terrified of them and moves across the world to escape them but 12 years later she has to go back home because her father is sick. She eventually is brought to their monster world - where the three monsters who haunted her at night claim her as their mate. Breeding kink galore with lots of monster anatomy
I was given an ARC of this book with no obligation to write a review, but I couldn't help but give my honest review as I really loved this book!
Alexis grew up knowing there were monsters under her bed. At first, she was afraid of the shadowy bogeymen, but she soon came to trust them and they eventually became her friends. Then, when she turned 18, there was an incident that caused her to leave home and run away from her monsters. Now, 12 years later, she's home again and her monsters aren't letting her get away again. Alexis is THEIR mate and they intend to claim her and breed her!
This book was amazing! M.J. Marstens is a talented author and the story was so well written that I couldn't put it down! Xhoshad (red eyed monster), Nerazi (yellow eyed monster), and Seriq (green eyed monster) had their own POV in the story, along with Alexis, and I just loved them!
Each monster was born of destructive human emotions, much like the beings in Pandora's Box. Xhoshad is formed by coercion and is the leader of the group, Nerazi is greed and mischievousness (a nice combination, especially during smexxy times!), and Seriq (my favorite...Ok, I love them all!) is possessive. Think "MINE, MINE, MINE!!"
I enjoyed the characters and the riveting plot. And yes, the smexxy scenes with their long tongues... nice... long... tongues. And their... um... other huge body parts... Nevertheless, it's not just smex. This book is very descriptive with the monsters' world and quite exciting. Oh, and there is a really "bad guy" and his army, who want to destroy them and take their mate for himself. What happens next? Read the story and see!
This story is awesome if you love monster romance and it's perfect if you are new to monster romance like I was. The monsters are so endearing that you'll be looking under your bed and wishing for monsters of your own to be there! Definitely recommend!
Well, this was an experience I will not forget anytime soon. Nor will I be forgetting the character art included in the beginning--which will remain fully burned into my retinas forever.
This follows Alexis, a young photographer who left home after an incident involving some demons and the disappearance of her best friend. Alexis has always had nightmares, and those nightmares often included the appearance of three spooky demons that come out from beneath her bed, and are only visible in the dark. When Alexis has to return home to care for her dying father, she must once again face her nightmare demons residing in her childhood home. And this time, things take a sexy turn.
These demons have glowing eyes, shadow powers, and very long tongues. They use said tongues in very creative ways, that's all imma say. This is book one of a trilogy and doesn't quite end on a cliffhanger, more of a tee-up for book 2. I enjoyed this wild, spicy ride a lot, and would definitely recommend it.
Based on the marketing, synopsis, and cover of this book I thought I was in for a quick, short, and monstrously steamy erotica. Instead, I got like 2 sex scenes and a basic defeat the evil lord trope paired up with a writing style that wasn't enough to pull me into the unwanted plot.
In this first book in a trilogy we follow Alexis as she has to travel back to her home after she's been running away from the monsters under her bed for 12 years. There's a lot of Nothing until around the 60% mark where we finally get to see her interact with the monsters in the present, then we get like 2 steamy scenes that weren't as exciting as the illustrations for this book would have you believe and then some plot twist and theeeen the end....
Is this book horrible? No, I just wasn't expecting it to be more than a whole bunch of f*cking and was therefore sorely dissatisfied with the reading experience. I will not be continuing with the series.
Rating: 2 stars Steam: 1.5 flames Genre: Monster Romance Triggers: Yes ***** So I went into this book expecting something a little different, I mean a monster reverse harem... I expected this to be steamy.... but it was more of a lukewarm slow burn. I expected a lot of monsters but instead I got a lot of human backstory and flashbacks back and forth as to why the FMC won't go home anymore. And... when I finally get to big reveal as to why she has stayed away for 12 years, it was a little underwhelming. I think this book is a case of it's not you it's me...since there a lot of people that loved it. I just didn't love this book, it was okay enough but I don't think I will search out books two and three when they are released.
Also, I didn't realize this book was book one of a trilogy and would end on a cliffhanger AND that all books are not published... That was my fault, I got so excited to read a monster book I didn't read the fine print at the end of the blurb. THIS BOOKS ENDS ON A CLIFFHANGER.
For years Alexis has been visited by monsters and over that time built a secret friendship with them. The day her bff is over and goes missing is the last day Alexis even steps foot in her home. Over a decade has passed with Alexis living in Australia, across the globe as far as she could possibly be from home, memories and monsters. Half the book is spent with Alexis returning home, facing her fears and reconnecting with her long lost love. Until her past comes knocking and Alexis is quite literally taken out of this realm. Running and denial has only gotten her so far and so Alexis is really thrown for a loop. She’s an ok heroine, I do think her running away was a bit dramatic. Hell I’d have demanded where my friend was rather than run. It was also pretty painful to see how much hurt she caused those who cared for her. Heck she never even came home for her moms funeral. In some ways I get her fear and even the running but it doesn’t quite mesh with the relationship she had with the monsters. I think she honestly was looking for anything to block them from her life for whatever reason. Now though the past has come knocking and there will be no running this time. A mix of monsters and a human mate are at the center of her harem, if only the guys can get along… side note, I miss this authors hilarity and outrageousness, this felt too normal and sedate, I’m kinda bummed.
First of all shout out to those wonderful visuals/illustrations of *ahem* certain scenes! 👏👌 was not expecting that but totally made my day even though I had to sneakily look just so my kids didn’t catch me. Don’t worry they’re toddlers but still! Can’t even imagine if I was caught by my husband 😂
I’ve been waiting months to read this book. Unfortunately I hyped this too much in my head. Book was decent, storyline ok. I did like how the so called bogeyman (Fed off of emotions) came into existence and their shadow world is interesting but not fully developed. But for the most part I don’t think I could really immerse myself into this book bc of the fmc. (Who ran away from home and abandoned her sick mother, boyfriend, dad & bestie who got snatched) I tried relating but seriously can’t stand her. She begrudgingly came home to an ailing father but was too late) Maybe that has to do with my own experience of losing a parent & taking care of a sick one but I thought she was selfish & other than that she was a Mary Sue. Nothing remarkable about her. What kept me to the story was the monsters. Their characters was much more likable ( haha ironic ) & even the old boyfriend’s character & background (which had twists I saw coming) was better.
Did I read this within a few hours of having it delivered to my Kindle? Definitely. It did not disappoint. Per the author note in the beginning, you might think that you’re getting bangxiety but you aren’t. The author actually gives us a story, background, and world building… And then what I’m sure you wanted. Worth it.
I was pleasantly surprised to discover that this book had an actual plot with some actual romance and there were even some twists and turns. So not only is there the appeal of the other stuff but the storyline is really interesting as well. The author created an intricate world with conflicts and drama that has you wanting to know more. I definitely would like to learn more. There are also some events that I would like to know the results of, especially with the ending and the cliffhanger.
For those of you sleeping on this book, I would highly recommend it and I’m sure you’ll want some monsters under your bed as well.
Hot and steamy quick read about what goes bump in the night. A monster RH novel that takes place when the monsters you've feared for so long kidnap you and take you to their dimension and just maybe make you fall in love....OH AND THERE'S ART!
IT STARTED OFF SO GOOD! I fell in love with the idea that the monsters under her bed wanted her for reasons other than to fill their scare meters (haha). That the boogeymen had even followed her to another country, really showed their determination to keep tabs on her.
After a general setup though, the story felt super rushed. I wouldn’t have minded the spicy scenes to last a bit longer, and I wished there had been more character development. It seemed like variations of “people change in twelve years” was dropped quite often. With as much time hopping that happened between flashbacks and journal entries, it may have been better to have those moments play out rather than just explained.
Lexie makes it sound like the boogeymen were these horrible creatures, monsters, nightmare fuel, but as the story is told, those descriptions lose traction. She makes it sound like SHES the monster, but, even that thought doesn’t go very far. She’s convinced the town believes she’s crazy, but there’s no real proof of that. It’s all just in her head. Maybe that’s the point? That she can’t trust her own inner dialogue? She can’t trust her own memories? If so, leaning more into that idea would’ve been great.
Also, the best friend character, Roxy, did anyone else feel like she just popped up randomly? Or was she mentioned before the scene when Lexie (The FMC) went into her childhood bedroom and spotted the hoodie/jacket she’d left behind just before she was abducted and I completely missed it?
Overall, not a bad story. It lost me a bit in the last few chapters, but, I did finish it. I’ll add book two to my list to check out once it releases.
I did quite love the drawings inserted into parts. It was a fun surprise. Bonus star for those.
What do you do when the monsters under your bed are actually real? In Alexis’s case you run. She’s spent the last fifteen years trying to forget the trio of sinful bogeymen who hid in the shadows of her room, and from the night that truly turned them into her worst nightmare. Forced to return home when she learns her father is deathly ill, Alexis must face her demons—literally and figuratively.
This book was wholly unexpected and to be honest I went in expecting absolute filth with zero plot, and instead found a pretty interesting storyline with a little spicy spice. The only thing keeping this from being a full four stars is the pacing, I would have preferred a little more world building and medium burn relationship between Lex and for boys, but overall really enjoyed the book! Looking forward to book two!
For a book with less than 200 pages, there is an AMAZING amount of world building and character explanation! I absolutely loved this book and will be reading the next in the series......after I go get some night lights!
I truly didn’t expect a book about a woman getting railed by three monsters from under her bed to make me feel feelings but it did…and I enjoyed it very much.
This book was overhyped imo. Feel like I was promised dirty monster smessy times all over the place but was greatly disappointed with not much...understand there was the preface in the beginning promising it but with story. But honestly, if I'm reading this genre, I'm looking for smessy with some story sprinkled in not story with some smessy sprinkled in.
Hopefully this is rectified in book 2...but I'm not holding my breath at this point.
When I saw this book I was so here for it! I'm digging the monster vibes that are going around the RH community right now. This book was so much more than just monster smut though - there was a solid plot throughout, but some hot AF sexy time too.
Don't expect to get to the goods too early in this story, there's a lot of groundwork and setup that MJ has to lay to make sure the reader is thoroughly entrenched in the world. The dynamics of the monster world are so interesting and I can't wait to learn more as the series goes on.
The FMC! Let me start off by saying Alexis isn't the normal sort of FMC I go for. She's def going to be a grower as the series goes on. She has a lot of discovery to do, but by the end of book one, we start to see her shaping up. Everyone's trauma journey is different and MJ does a fantastic job at writing that (It can be frustrating for some, but what healing process isn't?)
The Guys! Xhoshad, Nerazi, Seriq & Mark - Three monsters and a human. There's so much backstory between all of the guys woven throughout the story! They've been a part of her life for so many years but with many conflicting feelings and histories. This ain't no easy love story, but that's what's making it so good to read.
The Smut! Read the forward and you'll know that you may get bangxiety in this one, but fear not, you'll get the goods by the end of it! Oh boy, do you get the monster smut.
This is my first read by MJ and I am completely smitten. I haven’t really read any monster themed RHs and this totally caught my attention. Alexis is a young woman who grew up with regular visits by three monsters (Xhoshad, Nerazi, and Seriq) who came from beneath her bed. She was terrified of them at first then gained trust with them only for it to turn back into terror when her best friend disappears. I love this young woman’s stubbornness and how she doesn’t hesitate to speak what’s on her mind. There is a ton of plot and character development with just enough spice to leave me panting in this first installment of this series - I devoured this with a quickness that I wasn’t expecting, loved it and I want more!I have so many questions and even more feelings at the twists…especially the cliffhanger. One of my other favorite things about this is the distinct personalities of Alexis’ monsters and how they came to be, it’s unique and something I haven’t ran across in other stories I have read and I am so here for it. This was a spontaneous one-click for me and I have no regrets - I seriously enjoyed it and can’t wait to see where MJ takes Alexis and her monsters.
I really wanted to like this. I tried so hard to keep going, but it just didn't ever get to the point where I wanted to keep reading. I made it 78% through, so my review is based on that portion.
It felt very forced. The flow was really off. I know it's about monsters, but this book should really have warnings for "dubious consent". In my opinion it's just rape. The storyline just couldn't keep me interested to make up for it. I'm actually really sad it didn't click for me.
A new trend is popping up in the book world, monster romance. I thought I knew what a monster romance would be like but MJ Marstens has shown me that I was not prepared. Monsters Under My Bed is the first book in her Bogeyman series. It's a multiple point-of-view monster romance that has a fmc who is in deep denial and a little bit of a hot mess, some monsters that are determined to make her theirs, and a world that may be even more dangerous than her men. There was a touch of mystery and very interesting, I had to piece a few pieces together.
Alexis suffers from anxiety it's connected to some past trauma, trauma involving her monsters. They came to her when she was a teenager and freaked her out, no one believed her it was a little traumatizing, I mean she was a teenager at the time claiming monsters were under her bed. However the monsters never harmed her and she eventually makes friends with them, connecting to them easily after that but after one incident she becomes terrified of them and has been on the run ever since.
The event has left Alexis riddled with anxiety and she's been on the run ever since. She left her childhood home, heck she left the country and never looked back. Alexis is constantly afraid that the monsters would find her and because she believes no one would understand she's basically living her life alone.
The monsters that have their eye on Alexis are just that monsters, known as the Vasura but humans call them Bogeymen. There are three that want Alexis, Xhoshad, Nerzai, and Seriq who are true monsters but not monstrous. They care for Alexis, worry about her not only physically but mentally, they're just a little rough around the edges. The bond they had formed with Alexis was really and missed her deeply when she was gone and when she comes back into their life, they're determined not to let her go.
Neither is Mark, her high school boyfriend whom she was so enamored with. Mark was a sweet guy who loved Alexis and is the reason the rift happened between Alexis and her monsters. When Alexis finally makes it back home Mark is all grown up, still, the kind, sweet and caring guy that he was before, heck he's a doctor and he's also still pining for Alexis. I can tell in the way Mark talks and acts, he's still in love with her, heck he even admitted his feelings and tried to get her to stay. I can tell that there was something still between them but Alexis is also connected to her monsters whether she wants to admit it or not. So who knows where it's going.
Now, let's talk about what everyone really came for when they decided to read a monster romance. The steam level in this book is incredible. Yes there is a bit of the dom dynamic going on and there is care but there is also some rough steamy sex and monster peen. The scenes in this book were hot.
But there was more to the story than the steam scenes. Portals, bonds, a false king, a kingdom being destroyed and so much more. I have so many questions that I need the answers to. Especially about the false king and the future of the Vasura. Marstens did a great job building up the Vasura and their world and now I want more. The culture is different (I mean they are literally monsters), the mythology about how they came onto being was all very creative and unique. Plus not to mention the Fallacious, "King" Zuriv is completely insane and his reasoning behind all that he has done made my jaw drop but I'm not fully surprised. I am a little surprised by the other little tidbits that he dropped though.
Marstens is a friggin genius, this story was something else. At first, I had no clue what was going on but as things become clear things get really interesting, especially the ending. There were a few plot twists that made a whole lot of sense but shocked me nevertheless. I highly enjoyed Monsters Under My Bed, it may have been my first book monster book but it sure won't be my last. I'm already looking forward to the next book in the series.
I Give this Book a 3.5/5 Star Rating, Listing as 3.
Wanted to jump into this book as soon as it came out. This is definitely a book that needs to be read a few more times to better get the picture of how everything goes, and maybe catch more details that didn’t click yet the first few times. While this is a pretty decent read, I was having trouble keeping focus on it, some areas read a bit faster than I would’ve liked. But all in all I definitely wanna keep reading this type of universe.
Cliffhanger(?): Yes. I definitely want to keep reading this series, and try to figure out what is going on 😆 Relationship Type: MFMM Dark(?): No. Heat: 3-3.5, To me the heat scenes seemed to read a little fast as well as a bit of lack in detail which makes the heat scenes feel rushed and short, but I loved some of the pictures provided for helpful imagery! 🥵 Monsters: are more humanoid in form. I’m gonna make a monster shelf so I can keep track of all my monster reads. Romance: 2.5-3/5 Drama: 3-3.5/5 Suspense: 3.5/5 Pacing: Mid-Mid Fast, the pace is intermittent it’s reads fast and reads slow.
Oh my monsters!!! Haha I don’t even know where to start!! This book was amazing.. I couldn’t get enough of it.. I can’t wait till book 2 comes out so we can find out what happens next.. I want more!!
& that ending tho.. did not see that coming..😳
It brings a whole new meaning to the Boogie Man or for in this case Boogie Men lol..
At first Alexis is afraid of the monsters under her bed.. she even travels half way around the world to get away from them…
The three monsters are completely different but they all want Alexis .. they have a hunger for her & want her with them.. they’ve been searching for her since she left…
Oh my gosh this book is freak’n hot!! 🥵🥵🥵 It will have you wanting more!!
Monsters Under My Bed by MJ Marstens is book one in the Bogeyman books. This book follows the female main character Alexis. This book goes between past and present time periods. During this time we meet three monsters Under Alexis' bed: Xhoshad for is formed by coercion, Nerazi is formed by greed and mischievousness, and Seriq is formed by possession. The characters and the plot draw you in and keep you wanting more.
Alexis has left Texas and flew to Australia to escape the 3 monsters she kept seeing since she was younger. Forced to come back home as her father is in the hospital, Alexis has to face her monsters and her ex; however, she's not prepared to find herself in the boogeymen's realm and have to fight the usurper to the boogeymen's throne.
It was a spicy read, and I'm so curious to see what will happen with Alexis, Mark and her 3 monsters.
I was kindly provided with an ARC by the author, but I'm leaving a voluntary and honest review.
