A mysterious fae-shifter. A battle royale. A chance of a lifetime.
I’ve always been different. Awkward. Horrible at magic. A square peg shoved into a round hole.

But when I arrive in Faerie, I have a chance to start over, to help people who have it worse than me, and to finally get to know my father—the King of Lyonesse.

In Faerie I have friends and a fae guard who fancies me. Crazily enough, for once in my life my bloody magic is cooperating.

There’s one hitch.

To get what I want most, I have to fight—gladiator style—and I must win.

The others are infinitely more powerful than me and a thousand times more charming. Cunning and competitive to boot. And they all want to be tops too. But when I really want something, I’ve never been one to give up.

And I won’t start now.

Wow, I swear Ashley McLeo astounds me with every new book!!! Her imagination and way with words are truly magical.

Hawk Witch, a magical tale that expanded on the Fae world Ashley McLeo began in her Fanged Fae series. Lana a light witch who thinks she has very little extraordinary power, her best friend Finn who thinks he's human and their Hawk pets Naela and Kane, being a magical journey to meet Lana's father that turns into so much more...

Can friendship survive so much drama, unrequited love, and supposed betrayal??? I have to say young people can be super dramatic when their worlds are turned upside down...lol They all need to roll with the punches, Go with the flow and do whatever it takes to survive.

I am extremely excited for more in this series.

Interesting story with some fun magical adventures for lead character, Lana. Witch Lana receives a letter from the father she never knew; he wants her to complete some tasks before he’ll meet with her. I would be sort of ticked and more reticent about finding my absentee father if I needed to jump through hoops in order to meet him, but Lana seems to jump right on board. Luckily, her friend, Finn, is there to help. Fun magical world, and I enjoyed the premise of solving clues and problems to progress towards a goal. Like that there’s plenty of paranormal characters going on; witches, Fae, shifters, etc. Overall, I liked the read and characters; maybe a little more YA than I usually like to read, but still an entertaining read. Looking forward to reading the story continue in the next book.

Wow, This Is An Adrenaline Fuelled Thrilling Read!!⚡🍀👑🍀⚡

Lana & her bestfriend since early childhood, Finn, bonded over Hawks. Lana is a Witch, she isn't very strong in her chosen power of a Light Wealder.😕 She also struggles in social situations & although Finn has no magic, he is gorgeous & outgoing, so helps keep her from becoming a complete loner throughout her childhood & whilst they attend Trinity College, Dublin. Their Hawks, Naela & Kane, are uncannily clever and deeply bonded to them both too!!👍

Both only have one natural parent in their lives. Finn's Father died & he has no memory of him. Lana's Dad, however, abandoned her Mum, a Witch Healer, before Lana was even born. It's left her feeling a burning need to find him and get answers - she's desperate for approval from the man she's never met!!😔😢

After being told by a Shifter that her Father has left a trail of clues with a way to find him, Lana can't resist the desire to finally meet the man that sired her. So with the help of Finn, they follow the clues & end up going through a portal - Bonegate - to Fairie!! Here they are faced with some shocking & uncomfortable truths and she discovers not just her Dad but other siblings!!😱😔😍
This is when the story really starts .... 💥

The drama & tension ratchets up continuously as the story of the Fae Lands unfolds. They discover that the land Lana is from is dying. It's because of its ailing magic and it is badly effecting the ordinary working class Fae & it's wildlife the most 😮😢 Friendship & kinship is found and lost 😢 Loyalty & betrayal run alongside hope & fear in the Court of Fullfeather as the stakes get laid out for Lana & her newly acquired siblings!!👑😳

I absolutely loved this book!!🌟 It has such a vast array of characters. Some are lovely others are not and others are yet to show us themselves fully one-way or the other😒 Lana's constant need for her Father's approval & time, above all else, annoyed me greatly. I was so relieved when she finally started to see the bigger picture at stake towards the end & let that motivate her as much, if not more, than just getting to know him. Other than that she's a great main character, she has flaws but strives to 'be better'!😍⚡Finn finally stepped up too, poor guy, he's really had his head messed with. 💔💥😔 I really like Garrett, Sai, Ebba & Ryker, I'm hopeful they're all loyal!!🙏🍀 Prince Casimir, I fear, is a huge danger for the future 😳😡

This is an absolutely unmissable series starter in my opinion. it's full of magic, intrigue & pulse pounding tension!🌟 I can't wait for book #2 Assassin Witch!!🎉

I received a copy of this book in exchange for my review. I loved, loved, LOVED this story!!!!

I've now had the opportunity to read books in three different series by this author, and Ashley McLeo is a terrific writer, whose books deliver a great balance of exciting, action-packed plots, with well-developed, complex but likable characters. This book is my favourite of her books so far and I can't wait to read more of Lana's story, and this world!

There are slight connections with the Hunger Games in this story, but not only is it much more than that book [which, frankly I found too violent and ugly to really enjoy] but it also focuses much more on the world-building, and allows the reader to really get to know all the characters well, not just the "leads". I really enjoyed getting to know all the characters in this book.

I also really liked the Fae world the author's created here. There is magic, and mayhem, but plenty of potential for new and exciting storylines in future books.

Highly recommended for those who enjoy paranormal fiction. In particular, younger readers would, I think find much to enjoy in this story, and great female characters to look up to and use as role-models for what women can do and be.

Wow. Just wow.
I was not sure what to expect going into this book. Something I love about these types of books is they are a mystery to me and I try to keep it that way going into it.

This book was giving me major Shadowhunter vibes as well as a few others. Then it veered off and became its own story completely. The idea of a world beyond this world that we humans have no idea of is fascinating to me.

I think my favorite part of this book was the training sessions. Not to spoil too much but the idea of lowers going up against experienced fighters with twisty outcomes is so much fun to read about.

The book was so well written and faced paced as well. The ending was fabulous. Any lover of magical books with witches, demons, the whole package will love this book.

4.5 stars rounded up to 5.

I did receive a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I really enjoyed this book and have high hopes for the rest of the series. Lana is a witch with an absent Father, so when an opportunity to meet him comes up, she can't say no. This takes us on the journey, where she finds out about her father and where her heritage come from. She discovers more then she imagined! I highly recommend this book. It is well written and the story flows well.

A really good and entertaining read. Characters were great and well developed - mostly you could have your own opinion about every character.
The plot was nice. I hope it will be more connected to the other new series written by Ms. McLeo - as I love connecting my fav series internally!

This is book one in The Bonegate series and has two main characters that readers are introduced to at the start of the series, Lana and her best friend Finn. Finn has been her only friend since early childhood, when they bonded over finding small hawks that they have raised ever since. Finn is outgoing, handsome and everyone’s friend, unlike Lana, who is a loner and without any company except for Finn. Lana is a witch, but not a very good one. She has chosen, or at least the magic within her, to be an illuminator. A witch who can do magic with light.

She has never known her father, who was only in a short relationship with her mother, so she has been raised by her mother and grandmother. As far as her mother, a healer and nurse knows, her father could still be alive and Lana wishes she could meet him. Lana is not much of a student, but wishes she had elemental magic! Her hawk, Naela, is her best buddy, whilst Finn’s is called Kane. They often take their hawks out for a run. Finn is also the child of a single mother, after his father apparently died when he was really young, so he has no memory of him. One night she finds Naela has been injured and this starts her adventure. A scroll has been delivered by a fae shifter and has a riddle for her to solve to find out about her father and her magic.

Lana asks Finn for his help and the puzzle has them travelling all around Dublin and Trinity College, where they both studied, to solve the clues. Solving the clues on the scroll see Lana and Finn both transported to a strange kingdom in Faerie land, which her father rules. They find out that another eleven young people have arrived at the palace at about the same time. They have all been summoned, through the same method, for an event called the Successional. They are all siblings, all children of the same man, the king! The event will find out who should become his general and also second in succession after his only living son, Prince Casimir. The reader will find out why Casimir is his only son and why the land around the palace is so barren.

All the half siblings are asked to volunteer to take part in the Successional tournament and all do so, thinking possibly of the chance to be part of the royal family and the improvement in status and benefits this could bring and the chance to use more powerful magic. They only have a short time to prepare for the tournament and learn more about the fae world and its effect on their magic. They are each guarded by individual guards during this period and Garrett is one of my favourites. There are various rules put into place for this event, not all of which, the participants were aware of when they signed up to take part in it!

Lots of surprises in this tale and a great start to a new series. This is the first book I have read by this author and I was really pleased to have found it. The friendship from the start of the book between Lana and Finn is a crucial part of the storyline. Matters change drastically as they learn more about each other and have to face lots of surprises, some very unwelcome. There is also a hint of romance, which I’m sure will be expanded upon in the next book and any further ones. The Bonegate and the reasons for the current state of the king’s kingdom, are all explained as the book goes on. A fantastic and imaginative storyline with lots of different types of faes and magic being described will draw in anyone that likes to read magical fantasy storylines.

Highly recommended tale of magic and a battle for royal succession. I received an ARC of this book from the author and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

Just no

I just can't relate with this character. As someone in a similar situation (minus the magic) I have no idea why she would to through the effort to meet her father when he clearly doesn't care enough to meet her.

Like her, I've wondered who my father is and why he never cared enough to meet me (knowing that he knows I exist) but if he's unwilling to make the simplest amount of effort in reaching out you'd be nuts to think I'd put in any effort to find him, much less fight and kill my own siblings to meet him.

Why risk your life, leave your home, leave the family that actually cared and loved you for a man that decided to go on an escapade to see how strong of a kid he could have. And no one had an issue with this? Said they wouldn't fight their siblings? Were p*ssed that he did what he did? No way. She's acting like a total simp which is not the impression the author is trying to give.

I mean read this text

"A parade—an exhibition to show off our magic—and networking with fae nobles?! I closed my eyes, battling back the distress that surged within me at the thought of hundreds, if not thousands, of eyes on me. Judging me. Fight it, Lana, fight it. No one wants an anxiety-ridden head of their army . . . or daughter".

She's fighting a panic attack because she's afraid her father will think her weak. Not because she wants to be better or feel better and actually be in charge of the army but because dear dad that hasn't given a crap about her might be ashamed. F off with that crap.

Plus the MC is a massive idiot. She's told directly and Indirectly (but in obvious ways) that something is happening and doesn't get it. At one point Maria says

"“Watch out for Nigel. I can’t be sure, but—” She tapped at her temple."

Which is pretty obvious that's she's referring to him having psychic powers but then a few chapters later

"Nigel was developing psychic powers? An image of Maria tapping her temples flashed in my mind, and I nearly let out a gasp and gave myself away. I was such an idiot! Maria hadn’t meant she was becoming physic. She’d been warning me about Nigel!"

I wanted to bash my head into a wall. She's was so thick I wasn't sure if the author had given her any intelligence multiple times in the book.

Then to top it off this happens:

"“I’m pleased you are the winner.” Father smiled. “Your abilities, bravery, and willingness to put yourself on the line for others will do great things for this kingdom. Most of all, I’m pleased our relationship can bloom.” "

Like, after risking her life multiple times he still couldn't be bothered to even MEET her and only now is pleased to have a relationship once part of the transaction is complete and he gets what he wants.

Maybe this book hit too close to home in certain spots but it was just utter crap to me. An unbelievably ignorant and unassertive main character, a boring world, unrealistic consequences and reactions and an overall lacking story. Not to mention the loads of info dumping from start to finish. I definitely will not be continuing this series.

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review! :)

The first book in The Bonegate Series, Hawk Witch, begins with the main character, Lana, graduating from college. She's a bit of an outcast, as she doesn't have many friends besides her lifelong best friend, Finn, and her trusty hawk, Naela. Lana isn't really sure what she's going to do with her life yet. She does possess some magical powers, however- she is an Illuminator, a light witch. The only problem is, she isn't very good at magic, and she doesn't practice like she should either!

Her life is practically turned upside down when she is visited by a shifter elf who proposes something peculiar- solve a few riddles and potentially meet her long-lost father! Of course, Lana can't resist this offer, and enlists the help of Finn to solve the riddles. After they solve the last riddle, they both touch a stone at the same time (a "bonegate") and are transported into the land of Faerie.

Once in Faerie, Lana learns that she has many half-siblings because her father (the King of Lyonesse) is at war with Queen Pari of Buyan... and he needs strong magical creatures at his side. Um, yeah dude... way to be an absentee father for like 20 years and then go "Oh yeah, help me fight someone." Pssh, I would've been out of there so fast!

Anyway, the King allows Lana and her siblings to train for a couple weeks before they compete in what is known as the Successional. As the name suggests, the Successional will determine who will become general of the king's army as well as second in line to the throne. Some of Lana's siblings are more competitive than others, and they all display a wide variety of magical talents. While in Faerie, Finn discovers that he is actually one of Lana's siblings as well... and he never knew he had magical abilities!

I felt like the king was exploiting his children by parading them around and by even holding a Successional in the first place. Despite this, Lana and all of her siblings want to stay and fight, which I thought was a little strange. I mean, no one wanted to go back to their old lives?? Not even Lana, who had a close relationship with her mother? Doesn't make sense to me.

Anyway! No spoilers, but the Successional's winner was pretty much who I assumed it would be all along. Also, Lana discovers that her hawk is more than just a pet- she is a familiar, so she is really in tune to Lana's thoughts and emotions. All in all, I enjoyed this book and can't wait to see what happens next!

A refreshing take on the portal fantasy faerie worlds we've come to expect.

I picked up The Hawk Witch at the Rose City Comic Convention. Ashely McLeo was in Writer's Alley for self-published authors. I asked her which book of hers she recommended I read and she pointed me toward the first in her Bonegate Series, The Hawk Witch.

At first, I had a little trouble placing The Hawk Witch in either Urban or Portal fantasy because of its unique world-building. Like an urban fantasy, magic exists in our world but with fae and demons being common knowledge. I didn't have the hidden world feel of a traditional Urban fantasy. When Lana travels to the Faerie world by bonegate, it felt a little more like a portal fantasy. But it still wasn't quite portal fantasy because magic and technology exist together on Earth.

The story begins at Trinnity College in Dublin, centering on Lana, a witch and falconer. First off, I have to say the inclusion of falconry in any book automatically gets me off on the right foot. Lana's bond with her falcon is so complex that a mysterious visitor calls Lana's falcon a familiar. That same mysterious visitor gives Lana a riddle from her father that will eventually lead her to find that absentee father.

The story starts off a little slow with Layla trying to unravel the riddle left by her father. She has the help of her best friend who knows the answer to each riddle almost immediately. The riddles didn't really feel like something the reader was meant to solve since they were referencing specific places at Trinnity college and Lana's friend figuring out the answer immediately gave the reader no time to help Lana figure out the answer. The riddles felt like bread crumbs left to get us to where the story would really start.

I can best describe the book from this point as if Harry Potter and Court of Thorn and Roses raised Hunger Games in a loving and nurturing environment. This isn't the first book that I've read that involved a character learning how to use their magic and competing in a gladiator esque event in a foreign world. My readings from Self-published authors have been limited to beta reading up until this point. Ashely McLeo writes like I want to write.

I find it difficult to get the time to read physical books and most of my literature is consumed via audiobook while working, exercising, or driving. When I found time to read this novel, I had trouble putting it down. Reading this book made me want to devote more time to my own writing. In the future, I forsee myself seeking out more of Ashley McLeo's books. I easily give this book five out of five stars.

This is the beginning of a wonderful new series with links to Ashley McLeo’s Fanged Fae series. Hawk Witch introduces us to a magical kingdom in Faerie. This world is richly and elaborately illustrated. Like all of Ashley’s characters the people are so real, you may have met them at the pub, library or work. They hide the magic that resides just below the surface of our everyday lives, and will quickly become your friends.

Lana is a mediocre witch, who with her charismatic but non-magical best friend, Finnegan, has just graduated from college in Scotland. Lana was raised by her mother, a single mom and healing witch, in the country. She is happy to be shed of the city and all of its swarms of inhabitants.

She isn’t quite sure what she will do with her life, other than spend more time with her hawk, Naela. Being an illuminator witch who isn’t very good at it doesn’t open many doors. Of course she was trained by her mother and gran. Both of their specialties are very different from Lana’s as a healer and a psychic. Illuminators are a bit scarce and there were none in the coven to help out.

Lana’s first night back, she is pulled from sleep by a commotion. Naela is obviously out of her mew and in trouble from the shrieks she’s making. What ends being a messenger, quite a strange one, from Lana’s father is the object of the hawk’s displeasure.

Over tea she delivers her massage, though it is more of a riddle. Lana’s father is reaching out to her, but only wishes to meet her if she is brave, strong and clever enough to follow his clues to find him. She has always wanted to know more about this man. Her mother has supplied little information over the years.

Will her mother understand if she sets off to find her father? Who can the man really be if he sends an elf as a messenger? Will she unravel the clues to meet him? What changes could that mean for Lana’s life?

Lana is a witch who has only known one parent and that is her mother. She doesn’t know anything about her father or who he is as her mother won’t talk about him. The only thing Lana knows about her father is that he abandoned them before she was born.
Lana is sort of a loner with only one friend to speak of, Finn. Finn and Lana have been best friends for most of their lives. Lana likes to keep to herself never going out but Finn won’t let that happen as he tries to make sure that she gets out and socializes a little. Finn like Lana has only known one parent his mother as well. Finn’s father died when he was just a baby.

Lana has always wanted to know about her father who he is and why he abandoned her. She may just get her wish when an elf shows up on her door step with clues as to how to find her father. Lana enlists her best friend Finn’s help to solve the puzzle and find her father.

After following all the clues they find the entrance to her father’s home. They find the gateway or bonegate to Faerie where her father lives and rules as the King. In order to get to know her father Lana must participate in a tournament with her twelve siblings and win.

Hawk Witch is a magically enthralling read that will keep you flipping the pages wanting to know what is going to happen next. The magic itself is so very enthralling. The tournament was amazing with all the different magic that each character used. Hawk Witch is a great introduction into the world of a brand new series The Bonegate Series. I can’t wait to read more about these wonderful characters, the Faerie realm and the magic in the next book Assassin Witch coming soon.

I recommend Hawk Witch to all fans of witches, faerie, magic and fantasy.

Witches and Fae shifters

This is the start of a series with fantastic and well written characters, you can feel what they are going through while reading and understand their conflicts. There's magic, action, friendships, treachery, twists and a great end to this first book in the series.

Lana and Finn (friends since childhood who both have hawks they found as chicks) meet a shifter hawk who tells Lana her father wants to meet her and has left a trail of clues to find him. Both have never know their dads, Finn’s died and he has no memories of him and Lana’s left her mum before she was born. Finn therefore offers to help her with the trail and they both end up going through a portal (Bonegate) to the sunken land of Fairie.

Here they discover not only her dad but a group of siblings who have also come to meet him. They all learn that the kingdom they are in is dying as their families Bonegate has been stolen by another Queen. They receive training and friendships are formed before going into a Succession tournament to receive ranks, below their father and his first-born son.

Alongside Lana and Finn, and her siblings, the other great characters are the guards who are assigned to protect them in the first book, the Feathered Fae (the King’s elite) particularly their ‘captain’, the King, the Queen, his rival, and the people of her kingdom. No-one is who they seem at first.

There are plenty of secrets to be uncovered by Lana and her siblings while they learn about the new land they are living in and the rules and traditions. Friendships are made, tested, lost and renewed as they are trained and tested and I found I couldn’t put it down.

This book has everything the fantasy reader wants. Our protagonists are Lana and Finn. Lana who is a witch has never known her father and has always wished for the chance to meet him. One day she finds out she can and she enlists her best friend Finn to help her accomplish her goal by solving a puzzle. Little do they know that the answer to the puzzle will take them through a bonegate to Faerie and learn that Lana’s father is King. Not only does Lana find her father, she and Finn will meet all sorts of people with different magical powers. They will also learn about Finn’s heritage but I don’t want to spoil the book for you so you’ll just have to read it to find out.

Throughout the storyline Lana and Finn learn things about themselves and the people they meet that they couldn’t imagine. They will find their friendship tested and learn why they bonded so easily as children. They will also encounter many different forms of magic, fae and shape shifters and endure a battle for their lives.

The author does a really good job of character and world building. Some of the characters you will love, some you will hate, but without these characters the story would be boring.

The Hawk Witch is a magical entertaining must read for any fantasy reader. Be prepared to sit for awhile and read as the book is hard to put down.

I really enjoyed this book and I’m looking forward to reading the next one in the series.

Eventhough I did find the title a bit misleading since I it made me expect the witch to turn into a hawk, it’s definitely obvious to what it refers to from the very beginning. And although I might have expected a slightly different story or at least some other elements in an otherwise uninown storyline, this one was so good that I couldn’t be bothered to see to my needs such as food or sleep. I was so captivated. I like the characters and I like the storyline. This story reminded me a lot of Olympian Challenger by Astrid Arditi and later on it’s a bit like The Hunger Games, well, maybe a bit more than just “a bit”. But it felt right for this story so it didn’t bother me that that aspect wasn’t new or new enough.
I am so pleased with this book, I was lucky enough for to stumble upon an advanced readers copy and not only did I have a great time reeding this, this book, to me at least, scored so high that I went and signed up for her reader’s group and newsletter so by random luck, I have discovered a new author that I will be following. I will definitely read the next installment. I’m very pleased this doesn’t end with a huge cliffhanger because I hate those but even though it ends rather abruptly, it’s not exactly a cliffhanger and the first chapter of book 2 is included as a sneak peak so I thought that was excellent, it gave for a less abrupt ending.

Another book right up my alley and I can't wait for more. I have had this in my tbr pile for a while. I should have read it sooner. I loved it. Well developed characters that were a perfect fit in the story. It had a reaper, giants, pooka and ma4ny more types of creatures. World building was excellent and kept me glued to the pages.
Lana the main character, grew up with just her mom. According to her mother the father left her before he even knew about her. She yearned to know him and to see him but her mother said he was gone. Then one day she had a mysterious visitor who annoyed her hawk. Lana was cautious and prepared to defend Niela her hawk if necessary. In an instant the huge vicious bird became a woman bearing a message from her father. It sent her on a scavenger hunt and if she completed it she would meet him. Excited she embarked on the hunt with her best friend Finn. They ended up in Faerie after the hunt was over. Then they discovered the reason he called them together. They were to compete in a tournament of sorts to gain positions in his court. Lana was not happy when she realized it was death, surrender or win. Not only was it her companions playing but a variety of creatures trying to earn freedom. An absolutely amazing read.

Rcvd an advanced reader copy from Booksprout for giving my two cents. What an interesting read....once you start it's hook, line and sinker....I couldn't put it down. We meet witch Lana and her 2 bffs..her hawk Naela and Finn, her confidant since childhood. Upon college graduation, she gets a visitor at home that gives get parchment that states a riddle to find her father.....a father that left before she was born. Lana with thr help of Finn set off on an adventure to find tbe clues to find her father....what she didn't expect is to wake up in an unknown realm to learn she is part elf and her father is....thr King!! Oh dear!! Not to mention Finn has learned some interesting facts about who he is and is her half brother. WHAT!!! Lana sees all these people in this kingdom and learns that they are all half siblings with different supernatural abilities and one is pure fae. They learn about the horrible happenings that is plaguing their realm and they must pass a trial to take their place in the kingdom....but at what cost? Drama, secrets, violence and uncovering truths makes this a great story.

I’ve never read this author before but the blurb for this story (okay and the cover) really caught my eye. I have been diving into YA reads lately and have found some wonderful reads; just like this book.
Lana (the leading lady of this story) and a witch, is such a fun character. She is strong and independent but still trying to find where so fits in life. I loved her passion for new people and her life path. She is out one day and she finds a shifter. This shifter gives Lana a riddle friend her father.

Finding her father is Lana’s ultimate goal. This story was filled with riddles (such fun to try and figure out before the characters), a brilliant and beautiful Faerie world and wonderful encounters. I had such fun reading this story and hope to be able to dive back into the world in the future.
While I would issue any spoilers for this book, I must say that any paranormal readers will enjoy this adventure. I received an ARC and am leaving an honest review.

BATTEN DOWN THE HATCHES!!!
WOAH! Talk about rocking this baby to the core. Oh man, what a joy. Ashley totally nailed this bad boy 100% on point with one dramatic storyline and gripping plot that catapults this baby this to life beautifully. A whirlwind of unpredictable events and circumstances that keep you flipping page after page. Struggling with all the trials and tribulations that propels those swirling emotions bursting into play smoothly. The characters are authentic, consistent and realistic with depth and qualities it's easy to relate. Sparks fly as confusion, mayhem and suspense ensues in epic proportions. The drama, heart pounding, pulse racing, hard hitting wonder that propels all the pieces together smoothly. The scenes were so detailed and descriptive it gives the illusion you were right there in the middle of ground zero with them. Remarkable job Ashley, thanks for sharing this little gem with us.

I loved this book! A roller coaster ride from start to finish! A mysterious messenger visits Lana with a scavenger hunt supposedly from her father. A father she’s never known. With her best friend by her side, the chase is on. Queue one absolute curve ball, and Lana’s life will never be the same.

Transported to Faerie, she meets her father – as well as twelve half siblings! She has to improve her magic if she wants to survive the Successional tournament. As she learns about this side of her heritage, she begins to find more of the magic that has always eluded her. But will it be in time to win?

An absolutely action-packed story focusing on how Lana has to adjust to her new situation. I really liked how she finds her strength and her magic. With her hawk familiar helping to protect her, Lana discovers a lot about herself and about who she is – and also who she doesn’t want to be. I am eagerly anticipating the next book in the series!

I received a copy from the author and I’m voluntarily leaving this review. The first book in the bone gate series follows Lana an illumination witch who has wanted to meet her father her whole life. When the opportunity strikes, she finds herself in another kingdom and that her father is the King of the Fae. In order to succeed in this new world she needs to fight Gladiator style.

I had a hard time getting into this book at first but once I got through the first third of the book, it was hard to put down. The magic in the world was very well done. There was clearly a lot of detail put into the different species, magic and how it works. The characters were also well written. While there were a lot of them and not all of them were focused in this book, there was still a lot of depth and personality put into each of them.

I wish we would’ve seen a bit more of the world in this book beyond the castle but there are future books for that. Overall 4.5 stars and a very solid read.

After graduating from Trinity College in Dublin, Lana, who is a witch, drives home to her Mam. Not long after she arrives home, with her Mam at work, Lana meets her first Elf. The Elf has a message from her father. The message is in the form of a riddle so Lana asks her best friend, Finnegan, for help since he loves puzzles. When Finn figures out the puzzle, he and Lana end up in the land of Fae and being the King's children, have to enter a gladiator-style contest to see who will rank lowest to highest of his 13 offspring. This story has infighting, backstabbing, and lots of violence. Highly recommended.

Lana and Finn have been best friends forever. Lana is a Illuminator Witch and Finn is her human friend or so they thought.
One day Lana is visited by a Shifter Fae. Ellette is a messenger from her father who she has never met. She is given a clue to follow and must solve if she wants to meet her father. Lana enlists the help of Finn to follow the clues. Together they solve the clues and are suddenly transported. They awake in Faerie and secrets are revealed.
This book was so good and intense. I didn’t want to put it down. Ashley has another winner with this book and can’t wait for the next book.

In Hawk Witch (The Bonegates, #1) by Ashley McLeo, after figuring out the clues left to her, with the help of her best friend, of an invite to meet the father she had never met, Lana arrives in Faerie with Finn.

Hawk Witch is an extremely well written first in a series. The aspects pulled from the regular world as well as Faerie are so rich and so well done. Lana is a great heroine. Not a brassy, in your face, strong heroine, but also not a complete bumbling, mouse of a girl. She's not perfect and more than a little socially awkward. She's also willing and driven to stand up for what she wants and what is right. The conflict between certain characters was heartbreaking. That, to me, is the hallmark of a great story. When they can illicit strong anxiety for the danger and conflict the hero is facing, that is a sign of a truly talented author.

This book was a bit hard for me to connect with.

Lana is a witch who has never know her father. Until one day she receives a mysterious summons and finds her father, along with a dozen half-siblings. Her fae father is the king, and he sired children all over the realms to build his power base. But for some reason, all of the prodigy decide to stay and compete against each other for rank in the kingdom.

That’s the part that kind of lost me. Not one of them protested? Not one of them was angry? They decide to risk their lives and leave their homes and family and friends for this father that spread his seed everywhere and then disappeared?
