I am writing a review for the series overall, not the individual books.

This series is SO GOOD!! I am not usually the type to read books made for younger audiences, but this one felt different. The love triangle is wrote out perfectly, and Messenger makes all of the characters have beautifully written personalities. You can tell that Messenger knows her characters well.

Usually, in books there are only developed personalities for the main characters. Other authors write as though side characters only exist to help the protagonist. But Messenger uses her characters not only to fulfill a role, but to convey her message. Thats what makes this series stand out.

Sophie's character is very relatable. I cannot express enough how much I would read something she thought and just- yeah.

Messenger made me rethink so many of my morals and my thinking. Her writing style is beautiful. The Keeper of The Lost Cities series is my comfort series.

I recommend this to anyone with a soul.

individual book ratings:

- books 1-4–> 3.5 stars
- books 5-8–> 2 stars
- 8.5 and what i read of 9–> 1 star

i liked the series at first. it was kinda a basic plot line but since it’s for a younger age, i understand that. just wasn’t for me.

the whole thing went downhill at book 5…. it was just the same plot over and over every single book. i’m sorry that i don’t want to read 3000 pages of useless information and recycled plot 🤷‍♀️

the characters were either super confusing and contradictory or really bland.

sophie. just no.
SHE IS THE MOST BASIC AND PICK ME MC I HAVE EVER READ ABOUT! i can’t deal with anymore of her rants of recycled petty feelings.

i liked keefe at first bc he was a cute side character/ love interest…. but at the end he got so cringy i couldn’t stand it. like talk about mommy problems 😅

basically every character was really badly thought out except the (least written about) wylie and kenric (who died) soooo

yeah the plot and world building was immature and unrealistic. it could have been a good series if it wasn’t so extensive and wasn’t packed with so much useless information that confused the entire plot.

i already have a review for 8.5, and i didn’t finish the 9th book bc it got soooo boring that i didn’t even care about the ending.

I SPENT SO MUCH TIME AND MONEY ON THIS SERIES AND I HATE IT!!

yeah so i’m done 👍

no offense to anyone who likes the series or the author, it’s just not for me and i don’t consider it worth my time.

Love these books, but I feel like Shannon missed an opportunity to further the characters. It is rated as 8-12 year old novels, which for the first 4 books was fine. But as the series continued I would have loved to see it grow into a more YA book. Some of the stuff the characters go through (particularly Keefe) could absolutely be furthered into a much darker but better book.

It is such a good Sci-fi book series! I have had the happy, sad, angry, and excited emotions, all throughout the books. My friends are little older then the age range but we don’t care because it is so good!!! I know there is so many chapters and pages, but the pages fly by when you are really into it! Enjoy reading the series!😊

I’ve loved this series, and I agree that this is my all time favourite series of all time! Highly recommend for ages 9-16, great plot!! If you like Harry Potter, Marvel/DC you will love this! The books are still coming and if you like thick long books with a lot of cliff hangers, you’ll love this!

Amazing book❤
It is one of my favourites ...
The magical world is incredible, the characters are good and no need to talk about the cliffhangers(that was annoying but that kept me curious to know what will happen next). Can't wait for the next book!!

These books are amazing, they capture you on the fist page and you are desperate to get to the end. Some of the books do get really big, the 7th book it the biggest with about 850ish pages. But overall this series is fantastic for fantasy lovers.

What the hell? Why is this series STILL going? It’s weak. I’ll be honest; the book is dazzling with its fantasy elements and new world concepts. But when you look at it, you see cracks in the characters, the plot, the writing, and much more. I’m going to show you how much time you wasted on these books.

I’ll start with how unoriginal it is. Take the first book for example. The main character, a child, finds a new world filled with supernatural elements and discovers that they belong there. Later on in the book the character is placed with the responsibility of this new world and in the process faces both a trial and a kidnapping. Sound a little familiar? That’s because it was stolen from the Land of Stories: The Wishing Spell, which was published three years prior to this release. Each concept was copied smoothly you barely know it. The travel, the characters, the plot and adventure, the trial, the kidnapping, the “you belong here” all came before Kotloc. Shannon took everything down to the blonde hair and blue eyes on your favourite characters. And speaking of characters let’s look at Keefe/Dex, who are the same but see that more in the next paragraph. They’re both Sophie’s best and loyal friends. However they both fall for her and she shuts them down. This was ripped from the twilight saga’s famous Jacob Black. Anyone who has read twilight knows Jacob is Bella”s best friend and he falls madly in love with her only to be brokenhearted. This book came years before, Shannon was writing this reused material.

Sophie dates Fitz, who’s supposedly a “perfect hero.” Though he is selfish and full of himself. Then moves onto Keefe, the “best character” who is useless. He is not funny he’s annoying. He needs Sophie every single moment of his pathetic life. “Pity me!” His character practically screams. She kisses Dex for no reason whatsoever. Now when it comes to side characters development isn’t as important, yet that doesn’t mean have millions of underdeveloped useless characters. I’ve lost count of how many random people appear in the series.
And while these characters are supposed to have ROMANTIC relationships and close connections, they’re actually quite surface level and basic. I would say it’s more a newer relationship/ friendship however that would require electric chemistry no one has.

The writing. Well it’s simply not to die for. Shannon capitalizes millions of words for no need. Example: “The Boy Who Disappeared” shouldn’t have been named as a character rather mentioned normally. Do you call your classmate “The Girl With Blonde Hair”? Also the narrative function itself makes no sense. It’s supposed to be from Sophie’s perspective yet she herself does not tell the story rather it’s an overview as Shannon narrating. Which makes no sense. Is Shannon so attached to her character that she has to be her telepathy twin?

Finally the logic of the series. What logic? If the Neverseen are thousands of steps ahead how have they not defeated everyone yet? Where were they when Sophie had the Ability Restrictor on her head? How about when Alden’s mind was broken?? When one of the Mr. Forkles died?? The Blackswan does not do anything to stop them. How come Grady and Edaline never noticed Brant being suspicious if they watched over him so carefully? What I truly question is why Sophie, a TWELVE year old is placed with the responsibility of the Lost Cities by the Blackswan, a group of ADULTS? Not to mention she’s juggling an obsessive love triangle, as most pre-teens don’t do. And don’t get me started on the first three books. So all kinds of chaos happens the second Sophie hits the Lost Cities which makes no sense. She does absolutely nothing! The Neverseen wouldn’t know anything about project Moonlark. She shouldn’t have changed anything until book FOUR, when she joins the Blackswan.

You’re going to hate on me in the comments. However ask yourself this: how old are you? This series is meant for eight to twelve year olds. If you’re in that age group please tell me how wrong I am. If you are not… self reflect.

I CANNOT BELIEVE THIS SERIES DOESN'T HAVE ANY REVIEWS! THIS IS BY FAR THE BEST SERIES I'VE EVER READ!!! People usually get bored after the 2nd book, I did, but you don't give the rest of the series a chance! After the 4th book, things start getting darker and deeper, relationships and taken to the max, characters start to feel the pressure, and friendships grow, as this epic series takes flight! I am DESPERATELY waiting for book 10, and I know anyone else who reads the whole series will too!

This series was utterly amazing. I would recommend this series to readers 9-10+. I am a tween and I found this series amazing. With characters that you would die for (not literally) and surprising betrayals, I absolutely fell in love with this series. It is a must read. Other good books include the hunger games series, divergent series, legend series and harry potter.

I actually quite enjoyed this series. It's a little simple and likely meant more for pre-teens and similar ages. Yet, as a teen, I'm excited for book 9

I have A LOT
And I'm probably going to have to go back and edit this multiple times
But right now Communism is on my mind so I'm going to talk about communism in The Lost Cities
Because it's really at least semi-communist
Yeah
Everyone has an equal amount of money and they don't work to get money they "Work for the sake of working" which sounds pretty communist to me.
Considering that everyone is like mega-rich inflation would have to be a factor right?
But it's not
So... is everything just government owned? Because that's pretty communist.
I mean sure, it's on the good end of communism
But still
Communism

Then there's Fitz and I just hate him
Like overall he doesn't have a personality really and he's kinda like supposed to be felt bad after the whole Alvar thingy but he's not. over Keefe is just better. ALso Fitz cares too much about match-making

ON THE TOPIC OF MATCHMAKING
*gay*
We never see any gay elves and I'm wondering how the whole match-making system would work
Like if I was an elf would I just go to the match-making peeps and be like "Hey yo I like women" and then they would be like "coolio here are some other women who like women"
and that would be that
Is there different match-makers for gay elves
Like if you're an aroace elf do you just not apply?
What about trans elves?
Shannonnnnn give us LGBTQIA+ elvesssssssssssssssssss
anyway
I just realized this doesn't include Unlocked and Stellerlune but all the books have kind of become one inside my head (except flashback and Exile) so I might end up talking about them but whatever
anyway
Aother thing I wonder about is babies
like sure they have babies
BUT YOU CAN'T JUST LEAVE IT AT THAT
WHY ARE FITZ'S PARENTS LIKE 100 YEARS APART IN AGE BUT ALL THEIR KIDS AND LIKE 3 YEARS APART
WHY IS IT FROWNED UPON TO HAVE SO MANY KIDS IF YOU CAN JUST KEEP REPRODUCING FOREVER ANYWAY?
CAN they keep producing babies forever?
I feel like it would be smarter to have your kids further apart in age, right?
Because then you could give them more individualized attention?
and then if the Vackers had done then maybe Alvar wouldn't have done his whole evil-y thing

Oop back to the inflation-communism topic
*Gold standard and the amount of gold that could possibly exist on earth anyway*
So I know that this isn't a non-fiction books dn in the first one Fitz poo-poos Einstien and then later in the books when they explain why *We don't talk to the humans (no no no no)* they are like *Atomic bomb was elfy stuff* which would mean that elves did have to know about Einstein and probably he was either a) and elf or b) talked to an elf. Also since Fitz is like *an elite elfy* he would DEFINITELY know about that so why doesn't he in the first book?

PLus Einstien didn't even want to do atomic bomb-y stuff?
Logically Eistien would have to be known
And if his theory was wrong why would the elf-dude who told him about atomic bomb stuff also being like btw bestei ur theory is wrong sorry bro now I'm just gonna light leap of of ere byeeeeeeee
*That's world war twooooooooooooo*
aaaaand I'm done for now

3.5

This book series could've been a trilogy. It drags on way to much and there is a lot of not needed detail.
Sofie: she is too special. Five powers! It is rare enough to have two but five?!

The background characters are very flat. The two asian characters have a very stereotypical life. Parents that make sure they achieve the greatest and they don't love them. I always forget that Tam and Linh exist because they barley say anything and they only nod their heads and then some. The characters don't have much of a personality. We just get their names and what they look like I don't really get much of a personality form them. The only personalities we get are Keefe's and maybe Fitz's and Dex's. It is hard to read Sofie too.
This series was good but it could've been better. I'm too invested now though so I will read the last book when it comes out to see how she sums it all up.

This series of books, by Shannon Messenger, is one of my all-time favorites ! The books follow Sophie Foster, a brilliant girl. Things were normal for her, until one day. Sophie was outside, reading an encyclopedia, and saw something startling. She then got up to investigate, but tripped and was knocked out! When Sophie came to, she found herself in the hospital !

These books are family favorites around here. Very readable and fun. I enjoy them. My teenage boys like them even though they are narrated by a young lady.
My main issue with this series is that the kids and whole society are made up of advanced geniuses. Yet they don’t problem solve like geniuses.

I guess if they did the story wouldn’t be interesting, but it’s a bit of a plot hole.

I liked these books in middle school so I will always have a part of me that enjoys them.
But the FMC is a total Mary sue, like maryest Mary sue to ever Mary sue. I couldn’t re-read the series because I wanted to scream at her. But if you are in middle school and love intricate stories than this book is definitely for you

I really don’t love fantasy, I’m more of a realistic fiction girl but I LOVE this series. Normally the magic fighting stuff bores and confuses me but not this one. So no matter what genre you like best, try this series because it has something for everyone.
Highly recommend!!

this series is my guilty pleasure. it's obviously directed to a younger reading audience, a bit too immature for YA but i love this series regardless. the creative, the romance, the plot twists and cliff hangers, the character devolpment, etc. just perfect. a bit of a cliche but i don't mind.
