You can never truly know what goes on behind closed doors…

My darling son, Sam, is marrying his childhood sweetheart and I couldn’t be prouder of the man he’s grown into. Walking out on his abusive father all those years ago was the best thing I ever did. And today he stands, tall and handsome, saying ‘I do’ to my dream daughter-in-law. If I hadn’t pushed them together all those years ago, he might never have found a girl as perfect as Lauren. It’s true what they say, mother always knows best.

But weeks later, Lauren is dead and police cars fill the driveway of their idyllic countryside home. As they question Sam, I sense he’s hiding something. Why won’t he look me in the eye? And who does he rush off to meet as soon as the police are gone?

Desperate, I do what every good mother would do: I let myself into Sam and Lauren’s bedroom. What I see, I will never be able to forget. My son’s beautiful new wife was hiding a dangerous secret. Can I clear my son’s name? And could my life be in danger now too?

A completely gripping, utterly twisted thriller that will leave your jaw on the floor. Perfect for fans of Gone Girl, The Wife Between Us and The Woman in the Window.

"The New Wife" by Sue Watson is a lesson in, "How well do you really know someone?"

Georgie Moore's son, Sam, and Helen Jackson's daughter, Lauren, are engaged. The two mums' met on the first day of preschool for Sam and Lauren and have been BFF's ever since.

Sam and Lauren were childhood sweethearts through their early school years and at university. With their careers underway they're tying the knot and the two mums' couldn't be happier!

What takes everyone by surprise is Lauren's death three months later and Sam being charged with her murder. Georgie is convinced Sam is innocent and is determined to prove it.

But...isn't the husband always the most likely suspect?

I enjoyed Georgie as the protagonist and listening to this story through her point-of-view. The audiobook narrator, Tamsin Kennard gave believability to her voicing, kept me intrigued and it was easy to listen during the first half of the story.

This is when it slows down, feels repetitive and I was anxious for something new to happen. The pace did pick up during the last 20% when twists and secrets surface that begins to breathe life back into this story.

I like this book but it never tosses anything new and different at me. Perhaps more than one POV and 50 pages less would have made a difference. There are reviewers who have enjoyed this one more than I have so do check out their perspective, as well.

3.5 stars for the audiobook, 3 stars for the story, averaging 3.25 stars rounded down.

Thank you to NetGalley, Bookouture Audio, and Sue Watson for a free ARC of this book. It has been an honor to give my honest and voluntary review.

“Regardless of how close you might feel to someone, everyone has their secrets, and secrets usually lead to lies.” With family like this, who needs enemies? Everyone has a secret in this twisted tale of deception and betrayal. No one is who they appear to be and the stakes are high in keeping the perception of perfection alive. My belief in who the villain was behind the tragic death of the newlywed changed as events unfolded. The final twist was a total shocker. This thriller was gripping from start to finish. Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for my copy.

How well do you really know your family? Your best friends? This question gets a good workout in Sue Watson’s new book.

Single mum Georgie Moore and Helen Jackson, married to police officer, Tim, first met on their children’s first day at preschool. Sam and Lauren struck up a friendship that day that ended up with them getting married 23 years later. The marriage was a joyous affair, even though Lauren had some concerns earlier, but three months later Lauren was dead. She had fallen down the stairs in their remote cottage on the Dartmoor plain and Sam had discovered her broken and bloodied body when he returned home late from work that day.

Helen and Tim were broken by this. The two families had been so close before, having many relaxed meals together and even holidaying abroad together but things were very strained now. Lauren’s younger sister, 18 year old Kate, always awkward, became very uncommunicative while while Lauren’s best friend, Sadie, seemed to have no boundaries. Georgie had never really warmed to Sadie but admired the Jacksons for supporting the poor girl through thick and thin, paying her way and so on because her home life was disadvantaged and dysfunctional.

Things take a turn for the worse though when authorities determine that Lauren’s death was not an accident. They think she was pushed! Helen becomes more distant and sees things only through the bottom of a bottle. The joint family dinners are a thing of the past. An arrest is made. Then a different person is arrested. At this point you don’t know what to think. The pus of the lies and betrayal, which has been slowly seeping out, turns into a torrent and nothing can stop the train wreck that is coming.

Too much - possibly. Melodramatic - definitely. Fun to read - mostly except for when you are rolling your eyes, which happens a lot towards the end. Overall I enjoyed it but it was far from plausible. Many thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for the much appreciated arc which I reviewed voluntarily and honestly.

3.5 stars rounded up.

Georgie has watched as her son, Sam married his childhood sweetheart, Lauren. Georgie is so happy and proud. She knows Sam is going to be happy. It's all she has ever wanted. Then one evening Sam calls her, and the shock of that conversation is earth shattering. Lauren is dead and the police are investigating. What happened?

Georgie is determined to stand by her son, but it becomes clear that many of the characters in this book are hiding secrets - some bigger than others and as they say...the plot thickens.

Sue Watson has crafted a tale with many twists and turns that is narrated by Georgie. Just when I thought I had things figured out, there were little snippets of information and reveals. How well do you know those in your life? What goes on behind closed doors? What lies do we tell others? What lies do we tell ourselves?

This book had many twists and turns which kept my interest and had me wondering what the ending would reveal. I found this book to be enjoyable but it did not blow me away as The Sister-in-Law did. Having said that, I did enjoy it and various the twists and reveals. After finishing the book, I was able to reflect back and think ".... oh, now I understand that scene or that character's motivation, reactions, etc."

Fans of Watson will not be disappointed. Other reviewers are enjoying this slightly more than I did so please seek out their reviews as well.

Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts and opinions are my own.

I have read one other book by Sue Watson – ‘The Sister-in-Law’, and in many ways my feedback is similar for this one as well. The story is interesting and is what made me take it up, but the book does not live up to its promise.

The story is told through Georgie – her son Sam and Lauren were married just recently. Sam and Lauren have known each other since childhood, and Lauren’s parents Tim & Helen are good friends of Lauren as well. They live in a secluded cottage which Sam is particularly excited to be at - among nature. Lauren is found dead at the bottom of the spiral staircase at their home. The police investigation indicates this may not be an accident and Sam becomes a suspect. Georgie is certain Sam cannot do such a thing and is determined to prove his innocence. It is difficult to see what the motives and suspects could be, if indeed there was foul-play. The only people in recent touch are Lauren’s friend Sadie and one of their teachers – James. Tim is a police officer himself and Georgie hopes he too can see that Sam cannot be guilty. Georgie takes it upon herself to chase for more information which might uncover a new suspect.

As a psychological thriller, the book does well to keep you guessing by shifting the needle of suspicion, as told from Georgie’s view. The book is slow for much of the story and the reason it had to be so is that there is a limited set of characters and major incidents, and the suspense has to be kept.

Though there are some good twists and a nice finish, I am not a big fan of contrived plots and endings.

Another great read from Sue Watson, this is a psychological thriller with a difference, not just because there is the mystery of ‘whodidit’ running through the whole thing but because of the chatty style narrative from one of the main characters ( Georgie ), I loved it and felt like she was arm in arm with me some of the time telling me the story, at one point I thought she was going to offer me a cup of tea, I’m joking of course but you get the picture, it was reader involved and I felt part of the unfurling mystery
Make no mistake though this is a dark tale with some dastardly characters and the intrigue lasts pretty much up until the epilogue, it’s one of those that has you thinking and deciding who did what to who and then re thinking and re deciding
A really clever story that wont fail to impress and draw you in with the constant reminder throughout ‘do you really know someone’

When Sam Moore married his childhood sweetheart Lauren Jackson at a beautiful ceremony on a glorious day in May, he had no idea that in three months time she would be dead and he would be under suspicion for her murder.

Sam and Lauren met on the first day of nursery when Sam took the hand of the crying little girl clinging to her mother and led her off to play. Since then they had been inseparable through school and university and both families could not be more pleased that they were getting married and planning their lives together. Although Sam’s family consisted only of his single mother Georgie, who divorced her abusive husband when Sam was young, they had both long since been adopted as part of Lauren’s extended family. Lauren’s parents Tim and Helen were warm and welcoming and together with Lauren, her younger sister Kate and often her best friend Sadie, they would celebrate family events and even all go on vacation together.

After studying environmental science at university Sam found his dream job as an environmental officer for Dartmoor National Park, while Lauren is a junior doctor who has never lost her love of social life and parties. Sam is less outgoing and prefers a quieter life, saving his money to pay the mortgage of a cottage on the edge of Dartmoor. Although it had always been Sam’s dream to live near the moor, where he could be totally surrounded by nature, Georgie was concerned that Lauren would find the peace and isolation of the cottage too lonely, and soon get tired of the forty five minute drive to work.

This slow burn of a psychological suspense will keep you guessing, as your suspicions of who killed Lauren switch from one person to another. Georgie is the narrator and since she is convinced that Sam would never have killed Lauren, she plays amateur detective, snooping around their cottage and questioning their friends and family members. However, as all the events and characters seen through her eyes are coloured by her feelings and perceptions. Georgie might think that she has had decades to get to know Lauren and her family really well, but everyone has flaws and secrets they have kept hidden and some relationships are not what they seem.

The location of the cottage on the edge of a dark and lonely moor makes for an atmospheric location and adds to the tension as twists, red herrings and startling revelations ramp up the suspense. The ending is totally unexpected and guaranteed to surprise you, unless you picked up the few tiny hints along the way. A perfectly paced addictive read that will find a place on many a crime shelf.

This story is related to us by Georgie who is a single mom in her early 40s. Her son Sam has just gotten married to Lauren, his childhood sweetheart and daughter to Georgie's best friends Helen and Tim. In a matter of weeks after the wedding, Lauren is dead and there seem to be many secrets amongst the small group of friends.

This book is a well written slow burn psychological suspense. The characters are well developed but mostly unlikeable and at one time or another I suspected just about everybody had killed Lauren but the ending came as quite a surprise. Although it felt at times as though the plot was being dragged out a little too much and there was some repetition, the chapters are short and the book was an enjoyable read. Definitely recommendable.

It took me a week to finish the audiobook and I’d like to praise the voice narrator. She was so good! Her voice interpreted the emotions in every dialogue perfectly and I just love her.

The premise was intriguing and the characters were suspicious. I was accusing everyone, trying to make the puzzle pieces fit together. The build-up was a little bit slow but when the unexpected truth was revealed, everything made sense and the twists kept coming.

Also, the ending was shocking! Just when I thought this book couldn’t surprise me any further— it did and it was so good.

If you think you know someone, having spent decades with them, think again. This book will make you question everything you know about people.

Thank you again to Bookouture and Netgalley for the ARC! 👍🏻

This is the review of The New Wife.

Georgie’s son, Sam was marrying his childhood sweetheart, Lauren. Georgie, a single parent, following the breakup of her stormy marriage. and Lauren’s parents, Tim and Helen were so happy. They were all together…one happy family.

Lauren and Sam were opposites. Lauren, a doctor was happy, wild and full of life, while Sam, who had a degree in Environmental Studies was employed by a National Park and was more reserved and conservative in his actions. Different lifestyles merging together.

Sam worked long hours and Lauren resented this, living in a cottage in the Moors away from civilization and felt isolated and scared.

But weeks later, Lauren is dead lying at the bottom of a staircase. An accidental fall? Suicide? Murder? Police cars fill the driveway of their countryside home. Sam is questioned by the police and Georgie senses he is hiding something so decides to investigate. She goes to Sam and Lauren’s house to have a look around and discovers that her daughter in law was hiding a dangerous secret.

The evidence gathered by the police reveal Lauren was deliberately pushed…and Sam soon becomes the prime suspect. And when he's arrested for her murder, Georgie, vows to clear his name.
Will Georgie be able to clear her son’s name? Sam loved Lauren. Who would have killed Lauren and Why?

This is an excellent fast-paced addictive psychological thriller/domestic drama that will keep you guessing, lots of suspects, secrets and twists along the way make this an addictive read. Twists and turns and volatile unexpected ending that I did not see coming. Highly recommended!

Childhood sweethearts finally married, and then three months later the bride was dead.

At first they thought it was an accident, but then it was ruled a homicide.

Who could have killed her? The husband is always the first to suspect, and since he found her, who else would be a likely suspect? They did live in a remote area, but why would anyone want her dead?

There were quite a few people I had in mind. Ms. Watson kept me guessing until the end. Her writing style and story line will keep you turning the pages.

The characters were perfect and well developed and the suspense and buildup will keep any psychological thriller reader happy.

Secrets abound along with a GREAT story line.

This is an oh so good, do not miss read.

Will you guess correctly? 5/5

Awww this twisty, page turner is a must for psychological thriller fans!
Story starts with Sam Moore and Lauren Jackson getting married; as Lauren’s mom likes to say the beginning of the Jackmoore family. These two have been BFF since nursery school. Sam’s mom Georgie a single parent (never married) and Lauren’s Mom and Dad, Helen and Tim are also friends.
However, three months after the big day, Sam called his mom with horrible news that Lauren is dead. She has fallen down their steep spiral staircase unto the marble floor below. It seems like an accident. However, it ruled a homicide and Yep Sam is the prime suspect.
Story does a lot of back ground on the characters ~ that sets us up for a great psychological thriller!

I read enough psychological thrillers ~ so I know four things:
> Expect twists and twist and turns!
> Be suspicious of everyone!
> The most obvious person didn’t do it!
> There will be many secrets!
Awww Yes! Sue Watson Didn’t disappoint!!! Looking forward to my next Watson read!
The end of the book not only has list of Sue Watson’s novels but a sneak preview of sixteen of her stories.

Of course, I enjoyed her 'Acknowledgements' always fun to read the background on what inspired the author to write their story ~ she says she is always picking up little treasures and takes them back to her ‘writing nest'!

Want to thank NetGalley and Bookouture for this uncorrected eGalley. This file has been made available to me before publication in an early form for an honest professional review.

I enjoyed this book but did not enjoy the main character, Georgie. Georgie is mom to 26 year old Sam who marries his high school sweetheart, Lauren. She thinks everything is rainbows and butterflies- she is best friends with Lauren's family and both Sam and Lauren are successful young adults. A few months after the wedding, Lauren turns up dead and this causes Georgie to question if she really knows those who are closest to her as much as she thought she did.

The story itself is a good mystery- there are multiple potential culprits from which to choose and I found myself falling for some of the red herrings. I had an inkling of what might really be going on, and I was somewhat right but the real culmination of the story was much more complex (and interesting)., Some said the booked dragged at times but I didn't really feel that way, other than Georgie's constant inner monologue about how amazing her son and/or friendships were.

Now on to Georgie- I just didn't like her. She came off as naïve and self-absorbed and was judgmental of almost everyone around her- she grated on me throughout the book. I think the story would have still been a good story if she had acted differently than she did. I also thought that Helen came across as somewhat of a caricature and not a real person, but maybe I read too deeply into that.

Overall, I liked the book but would have liked it more if I had liked the main character more- I would rate a 3.5 instead of 4 for this reason. I still think its worth a read, though- anything with good twists wins me over! Thanks to Netgalley for providing me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

The plot was interesting enough, I just really hated Georgie.
Of all the characters in the book she seemed the least developed.
Imagine my surprise that she ended up being the narrator for the whole story.
I will probably give Sue Watson another try since she showed some spectacular ideas.

Filled with twists and red herrings, this story tells us how jumping to conclusions can be dangerous. The pace is slow in this character driven story. It's told from Georgie's perspective. I wasn't keen on any of the characters. This book will keep you guessing.

The characters are flat, 2 dimensional and stereotypical.
The storyline is actually not bad but ruined by the unbelievable characters.

Author Sue Watson + Narrator Tamsin Kennard = Amazing Listening Experience.

(Please check my math!)

Sam and Lauren are newlyweds.

Lauren is found dead at the bottom of the spiral staircase at their home.

Did Sam do it?

Although I felt the ending was contrived, the book was engaging and narrator Tamsin Kennard made the listening experience special.

Review of the audiobook narrated by Tamsin Kennard.
I absolutely loved this book, listened to it at any available opportunity, even got up earlier for work so I could squeeze in another half an hour!
I did like the protagonist on the whole, and she was excellently portrayed by the narrator. The other characters were a little annoying for me at times, but their personalities were central to the book.
I didn't guess the suspect, but then I was supsicious of everyone at some point!
I loved the narrator, she had an excellent speaking voice that was so natural and easy to listen to, and she made it a really enjoyable listen.
I did end the book rather upset, after hearing the after effects of grief described by Lauren's family. The loss felt by her sister echoed some of my feelings surrounding my own sister's death, and this was portrayed very accurately. It was an unexpected ending to a very gripping thriller.

Sam and Lauren have known each other since nursery school. They are now adults with great jobs and are getting married, which pleases their families. Sam's mom, Georgie, is best friends with Lauren's parents, Helen and Tim. They have always been there for her and supported her being a single mom. And Georgie has always admired their devotion to one another.

Several weeks after the wedding, Sam calls his mom and tells her that Lauren is dead. Georgie, being the great mother that she is, rushes to be with her son and sees Lauren lying at the bottom of the stairs in their cottage. There is an investigation into Lauren’s death, and Sam becomes the prime suspect. However Lauren was hiding secrets, and not only her, but her family as well. What really happened to Lauren? Was her death an accident or not? Georgie is doing her own detective work to find out.

Sue Watson’s books literally keep getting better and better. THE NEW WIFE is my favorite novel by Sue Watson to date. The author’s vast experience and expertise in the thriller genre shows in her impeccable writing. She really captured my attention from the very beginning. This is not a slow burn book and you will not want to stop reading until you come to the suspenseful conclusion.

Georgie has done her job. She really wanted her son Sam to marry with hopes of one day making her a grandmother. Lauren is indeed the perfect daughter-in-law. But a few months later everything changed in the most horrendous of ways. Lauren was found dead and the police are looking at Sam as the killer.

Sam was the one who found Lauren’s body but is he the killer? Georgie just has to know. Of course she offers him 100% of support when he claims his innocence, but seeds of doubt begin to take root. Georgie cannot help herself. One day she wanders over to their remote cottage to look around. Perhaps she will find a clue that the police did not?

As if this thrilling book could not get any better with regard to the level of suspense, then factor in the audiobook narration by Tamsin Kennard. Her approach to this book was spot on, which further kept my interest as to the possible identity of the killer.

At one point, both sets of parents were in perfect harmony. Now they are at loggerheads. What really happened to Lauren? With secrets and lies becoming clearer and clearer, Sam’s innocence begins to look doubtful. But with perfect misdirection, the reader is also doubtful. Excellent job as always Sue Watson.

Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

Not a thriller and not gripping

I was only 20% through this book and ready to give up. Pages and pages of things that could be said in sentences. I feel the author was just wasting space to lengthen the book. The twist was pretty lame. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone. The whole thing made no sense.

I love Sue Watson's books and with each book, I keep saying its her best book yet and I'm going to say it again with The New Wife. It is utterly brilliant and I for one can indeed confirm that I did not see the twist coming. In fact it floored me!

Yet again the author has written a fabulous thriller where the setting has you placing yourself in the characters shoes. The idyllic home in the countryside where newlyweds Sam and Lauren move into soon after they marry, whilst I could see the attraction in living somewhere so remote, it also felt very cut off from civilisation and had the hairs on my arms stand on end.

There are some very cleverly played red herrings within the storyline. I was constantly looking suspiciously at everyone and was adamant I knew who was behind Lauren's death but I was well and truly wrong. Sue has a wonderful style of writing that draws the reader quickly in with the story consuming them. I always have to set aside an afternoon or evening so I can wholly enjoy one of her books as when I pick one up, I never want to put it down until I've turned the last page. An addictive, page turner with a jaw dropping twist!

Sam and Lauren are getting married! They've known each other since they were both toddlers and both Sam's mom and Lauren's parents are thrilled. It's like one huge blended family.

But just three months after the ceremony, Lauren is dead ... lying at the bottom of a staircase. An accidental fall? Suicide? Murder?

The evidence gathered by the police reveal she was intentionally pushed. And as her husband, Sam is the prime suspect. And when he's arrested for her murder, Georgie, his mom, swears to clear his name.

What Georgie finds is that Lauren's parents believe that Sam killed their daughter. Sam has been acting suspiciously and refusing to talk to his mother. It seems like everyone has secrets .. or protecting someone who does. Even Lauren was keeping secrets before she died.

The suspense starts with Lauren's death and intensifies with each page. There are lots of suspects amid the grieving parents on both sides. Character development reveals all involved as believable and emotional. This was a hard one to put down for any length of time. There are twists leading first this way and then the other.. always leading to the surprising conclusion.

Many thanks to the author / Bookouture / Netgalley for the digital copy of this psychological suspense. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

You can never truly know what goes on behind closed doors…

Sam Moore and Lauren Jackson have been best friends since their first day at school when they were three and Sam told Lauren to shut up because she was crying so loudly! Twenty three years later and these childhood sweethearts are getting married and the two families are joining as one, as Lauren's mum and dad, Helen and Tim like to call them, the 'Jackmoores'. Now they're about to start married life in their dream cottage situated on the moors of Dartmoor and they couldn't be happier, but just a few short weeks later Sam's mum, Georgie answers the phone to her son, to be told that Lauren is dead and what first appeared to be an accident turns into a murder investigation, Sam is being questioned and Georgie is certain he isn't responsible, she just needs to find evidence to prove it before it tears the two families apart completely.

The New Wife is told from Georgie's perspective, it started as a slow burner but soon picked up speed, drawing me in right from the start. It's a tale of families, relationships, secrets and lies and shows that you can't ever really know someone as well as you thought, including family. This becomes quite evident to Georgie when she starts digging around trying to get answers to the mystery surrounding Lauren's death, because the secrets she uncovers will send shockwaves through the families and have a detrimental effect on their lives. This is a thriller with so many twists and turns that I changed my mind quite often as to who the perpetrator was, but nothing prepared me for the final reveal, although reflecting on it now and the behaviour of that person, should have made it obvious really. This is another great read and I look forward to reading more by this author.

I'd like to thank Bookouture and Netgalley for the auto approval, I will post my review on Goodreads now and Amazon on publication day.
