Hijinks and Misdemeanors picks up not long after the concluding events of the previous book. Ella is learning the ropes of being a living reaper while her relationship with her father begins to fall apart and her bond with her guardian angel, Eli, grows deeper. It was really disheartening to see what remaining trust, respect, and love she had for her father just whittle away. You can't really blame a girl when she finds out her father has been keeping secrets that involve kidnapping and experimenting on supernatural creatures. Eli continues to be there to support and protect Ella in all matters of her relatively complicated life. In this installment, she is dealing with the kidnapping of a dragon shifter, her sister's new mystery guy, a demon confrontation, and a new shifter boyfriend. It's a bit much for one living reaper to handle. Thankfully, she has a guardian angel there to keep her safe and support her. I appreciate that Ms. Baker continues to portray Ella as a very down to earth high school student who does normal teenage things like go on dates, even with everything else that's going on. Eli is also struggling with demons from his past, providing a continued opportunity for references and reflections to Ms. Baker's other series that first introduce readers to Eli. I look forward to seeing what challenges come next for Ella and Eli.
