She survived an abduction. Now she's trying to get on with her life. But it's not easy being a university student with a challenging mental health condition. The "mean girl" voice in her head just won't leave her alone. To complicate matters, she's an heiress worth a not-so-small fortune. Enter her sexy new bodyguard, a former paramedic trained to deal with medically fragile clients. He's determined to help her live a normal life and do all the things she yearns to do. He just never counted on falling in love with her. He's honor-bound to keep things strictly professional between them, but that's hard to do when one look from her is enough to send him to his knees.

Finding Layla is the first book in my new spin-off series, McIntyre Security Protectors. No cliffhanger. Just one glorious happy ending.

Trigger This book contains themes of mental illness related to auditory hallucinations, anxiety, low self-esteem, and self-harm. Please be advised if you might find these topics troubling.

I write about alpha protectors who fall in love hard and unconditionally, through the good and the bad. My characters are strong, sexy, and slightly damaged... because no one is perfect. All of my novels have happy-ever-after endings. What else would you expect from a die-hard romantic? I'm the author of the McIntyre Security Bodyguard Series of contemporary romance novels.

I live in Ohio with my daughter and more than a few dogs and cats. When I'm not writing, I'm reading romance novels and watching movies with happy endings. I'd love to hear from you! You can e-mail me at aprilwilsonwrites@outlook.com. Or, visit my website: aprilwilsonauthor.com.

"It’s entirely possible that she could, at one point, want to have sex with him. How the fuck am I going to function after that? With a sense of dread, I realize the truth—I won’t be able to. If she becomes involved with someone, I’ll have to ask to be reassigned. And that thought’s depressing as hell."

4.5 Stars! It was a solid 5 stars for me all the way through until the very end when it was a HFN instead of a HEA. Come on April Wilson, through a sister an epilogue!

This has been my first 5 star read in at least twenty books and man, did I need it!

This was my first April Wilson read and I was able to completely get into the story and not feel like I was missing out on anything not having read the other books.

The story was amazing! I was captivated all the way through with Layla's struggles and I thought that her auditory hallucinations were really interesting. I loved how much research and reading Jason did so he could understand what she was going through and how he wasn't put off by it, he just worked with it.

The story is extremely slow burn and lowish heat. There is only one sex scene. However, the story was so good that I didn't feel cheated out of the other scenes that could have been shoved in. It also made sense with the story because Jason was so careful and respectful of her.

Just a great read that I really enjoyed and highly recommend.

So happy to be diving back in this world from April- and also happy to see she's pivoted along the way to first person POV in her storytelling.

This had everything that I've liked about her stories- heroine in danger, sexy and caring bodyguard, slower burn, tender chemistry, and all that protective yumminess. I appreciated that April gave us a heroine with many physical and mental challenges to battle- a more realistic depiction of the kind of trauma someone would face after what she went through and an unflinching look at some very deep mental health challenges (that could be triggering for some).

I really liked them together but felt like we'd only just begun- the story came to what felt to be a bit rushed ending, with some things left open. Perhaps like other series some couples will get more than one book, because I definitely wanted more time with these two- and more closure. But all in all, a sweet and emotive read.

Story of Jason and Layla Alexander, Ian's sister.

As if it's not enough that this woman needs security because she was kidnapped, she's a billionaire, virgin, young, beautiful and has a mental illness. Her last bodyguard was the conduit for her kidnapping. Who can she trust?

I liked this, but this needed more. There are some plot holes still left open.

Dual POV.
The Hero is amazing.
The heroine has had a traumatic experience.
She was betrayed by her bodyguard, who was shot in front of her and then ended up sold to sex traffickers.
She wasn't raped as they realised her value as a virgin.
She has a medical condition and almost died as she was drugged and didn't receive her medication.

The story is good but I found it troublesome.
The heroine is severely traumatized, she contemplates suicide, is having nightmares etc.
When the young fit man who is her bodyguard meets her, he gets close to her.
He monitors her medication/health, spends evenings alone with her in her bedroom, goes to her at night when she has nightmares.
So it not surprising that she develops feelings for him very quickly.
I'm not sure it would be wise to put such a traumatized individual in such a situation.
It quickly leads to a relationship, her moving in with him, sex and I love yous.

No intimate scenes other than the Hero and heroine.
A few flashbacks of other girls screaming, she is kept separate from them, is touched(grabbed a breast) but not raped.

It all seemed a bit too quick and not the medical solution I would advocate.

There is other man drama in form of a class mate who of course turns out unkind. She agrees to go on a date with him, they start to share a meal, it ends badly.

Also she comes out of hospital, quick returns to college/uni as she is worried she will fail, it's all too quick.
Why not do it online? Or surely arrangements could have been made to do it from home, we are told the family is unbelievably wealthy and how everyone knows about her experience from the media?

I felt if she'd been further down the line in recovery then great but she is still so traumatized I didn't buy it.

3 stars as the Hero is amazing.

HEA.

Mixed Feelings

I’m torn between giving this 3 stars or 2 stars.

This is the first book in April’s new series - McIntyre Protectors series featuring Jason whom we’ve briefly met in two other books and Layla, who we met in Tyler and Ian’s series.

After reading this, this is the first time I’m walking away from one of April’s novels confused as to what the plot is. Aside from the fact that Layla is the daughter of a very wealthy family, there’s really nothing that stands out as to why she needs a 24/7 bodyguard.

I went into this thinking that maybe Jason would be protecting Layla from the people who ran the h*man tr*fficking ring that she was rescued from at the end of Tyler’s second book. But this feels more like a book about self discovery as Layla has kind of lived a very sheltered life due to her mental health and her diabetes.

April does a phenomenal job writing about Layla’s struggles with her auditory hallucinations. But I didn’t really buy the chemistry between the two. I struggled hard to finish this. And the ending to this book was so abrupt. It feels like April kind of rushed through finishing this.

left hanging

I have truly enjoyed all of this authors’ books but never have I’ve been left with this feeling of this is it? I realize that the topic or theme of this book is unpredictable but I felt like I was walking towards some “solution” and I was thrown over a cliff

Trigger Warning: This book contains themes of mental illness. It's related to auditory hallucinations, anxiety, low self-esteem, and self-harm. Please be advised you might find these topics troubling.

If you read part two, of Ian Alexander, and, Tyler Jamison’s story, you know that Ian’s sister, Layla had been kidnapped. Even though it went against direct orders from IAD to not do any detective work of any kind, it would mean instant termination. He had every intention of being good. That is until Ian’s sister, Layla gets kidnapped by her bodyguard. Layla didn't like him, but she didn't want to make waves. But, she’s high risk. Once, Tyler and, Ian find her and more than a dozen other girls, Tyler gets fired.

However, he did manage to get Layla’s parents to agree to hire Jason because he usually guards high-risk clients. When he agreed to do the job he knew he was in trouble. Layla is a beautiful woman, and he knows that when he sees her for the first time. He’s a sunk ship. But, he’s a professional, and helping, Layla through this awful ordeal is his main objective. Things like his feelings and heart are secondary to, Layla’s excruciating pain of that horrible day.

Not to mention the monster voice in her head is, telling her horrible things. Making her believe she was responsible, for the events of that day. The reason for the last bodyguard’s betrayal and death. Jason is dedicated to understanding how her auditory hallucinations work. How to counteract it and shut it down during them. He tries to find a way for her to get her to trust him more than she listens to what her voice says to her.

He makes Layla’s days and life about Layla. Like her brother, she doesn't like to be cooped up. So, he tries each day to take her on outings. Not one bodyguard before him thought to give her a baseball hat to skim by the masses. A few people noticed but not the majority like before. She got to walk on the beach and went to the zoo, and she even went shopping with him. Normal college girl things. No one saw her crush coming. See how things change and if they both can keep their secrets. She knows per the voices he’d get fired and Jason knows that, too. This is a story of a slow-burning romance of two people trying to weed their way through a dark and scary place. The stakes are too high for both to keep pushing through. They would gladly stay in the friend zone forever if it meant they could stay together. Now that’s love.

It's ok. Not my jam though

Jason & Layla: Trigger Warning (straight from the author): This book contains themes of mental illness related to auditory hallucinations, anxiety, low self-esteem, and self-harm. Please be advised if you might find these topics troubling. This story starts off on the trenches if hell. Layla has been kidnapped and is being held hostage. There's a small time jump to the present and now she's safe or so it appears. Her very wealthy family is replacing her bodyguard with somebody from McIntyre Security team. Jason is chosen, mostly for his medical skills as a further EMT. because of Layla's medical conditions, he seems to be there more as a babysitter as he spends most of his time monitoring her sugar levels and making sure she doesn't self harm. The story is a slow burn. So Layla suffers from auditory hallucinations which is technical verbiage for homegirl hears voices... We really just one. Essentially this is the voice we all have but her voice is very damaging to get mental stability. I didn't like that this was the whole reason for having a bodyguard. The only danger outside of the prologue was the danger to oneself and to me it's something that didn't need a bodyguard. It's not my jam for this particular trope of romance books but it was ok. Now there are some paparazzi moments but that's pretty much it. What I did love was that the book behind all the health stuff was about learning to trust again. Trusting those that are not immediate family. Layla has to learn to trust Jason, a virtual stranger with her while being which causes them to develop more of a friendship into something more. Layla was very much sheltered growing up so she's insecure and inexperienced in many things outside of school. I also liked that Jason takes on the challenge to combat whatever obscene thing that Layla's inner voice says to her. Story is on. I'm just hoping the next book is less about health and more about needing security.

All reviews posted at Tales of Love, Life, and Murder

Jason and Layla pulled me into this story immediately. He was just instantly likeable and she’s a complex but fascinating character. This isn’t my usual fare because there wasn’t a ton of action and it’s very slow burn but the characters are so good, that I loved every minute of it. Their angst felt genuine and relevant so it was a focus of the story instead of a distraction from it. Layla is in a very unique situation with her health and the things she’s survived, so Jason going out of his way to be careful with her and not jump into a physical relationship shows how much he cares.

The simplicity of their joy in one another is almost palpable and it’s made so much sweeter by Layla’s suffering. I just wanted her to find someone worthy so she could be a typical college kid and be happy. Jason exceeded my expectations in every way. He’s so devoted from the beginning and his love for her never wavers. He debuted pretty high on the book boyfriend scale because he wants to take care of her and he’s great at it.

This story wasn’t what I expected but that was a wonderful surprise because I loved every moment of it. And I know I always want more about the characters I really like but in this case, follow-up is justified because Layla is so different from most characters that there will still be trials in her future but now she has Jason to lean on. This is an awesome beginning to a new series and I can’t wait to continue it.

"Finding Layla" (McIntyre Security Protectors Book 1) by April Wilson

**Spoiler Alert**

Layla is in so much pain. The voices won't stop and the memories of everything that happened, paralyses her. She just wants to forget but the demons won't let her.

Jason has a new assignment. One that he knows is mentally sensitive. She has been through hell and back. Taking this assignment won't be easy but he will be who she needs.

Layla trusts no one. How can she when there is so much chaos? She fears she will never be normal.

Jason is on a mission and he will stop at nothing to keep her safe. Her happiness is key and having her trust is a gift.

There is so much story to read. Fantastic character build up with a duel POV.

This story will captivate you from beginning to end. The pain and heartache that Layla endures will keep you at the edge of your seat. You will feel her suffering down to the bone. I cried, I laughed and I fell in love. Just when you think all is lost, Jason swoops in and mends a broken soul.

This book has all the feels... #betrayal... #heartbreak... #understanding... #humour... #trust... #unconditionallove... #Romance and so much more.

I love April's style of writing. Like her book "Regret" this is a book I won't soon forget. April digs deep and she writes with her heart on her sleeve. Every word, every page, every chapter is well thought through. I can't wait to see what comes next.

Fantastic start to a new series!

What a fantastic book to start the series. Whilst characters are from previous books, this works well as a stand alone, but is enhanced if you’ve read the other series.

Jason is well known to us from the McIntyre Security Series and was a favourite from the off.

Layla we have met in Tyler’s books.

The bringing together of these two makes for a great read.

Layla is vulnerable, she’s been through a terrible ordeal, and with her health issues she’s in need of 24/7 care and protection.

Jason is not only a bodyguard but a medic with army training, so he’s the ideal candidate to take care of both her medical and protection needs.

Jason gets far more than he bargained for when he took on the assignment, Layla finally gets someone who listens and makes her feel safe.

Quite the emotional rollercoaster this read is, from Layla’s POV with her mental health and Jasons too, as he’s hasn’t come from his past unscathed, turning this into a beautiful love story.

Trigger Warnings : Talk of suicide, auditory hallucinations & mental illness, anxiety, talk of kidnapping.

This book was very emotional and sad but good. In this story you meet a young woman named Layla Alexander. She was kidnapped and treated with brutality. After her kidnapping her parents got her a bodyguard named Jason Miller. He is a former Army medic, paramedic. He works for McIntyre Security.

Jason and Layla meet and she is dealing with low self asteem and auditory hallucinations. Jason and Layla both develop feelings for each other while spending time together. This is a very slow burn because he is her bodyguard. I felt bad for Layla after everything that she was dealing with. Her family was very loving and supportive of her. I liked how Jason was tender and loving with Layla. I liked how they were throughout the story. This was a very hard book to read at times. I liked that they ended up as a couple.

While I’m usually not one for a fast-paced romance - when I DO read romance, which isn’t a lot, I’m more the slow-burn type - I actually love how this flowed a lot and I loved the characters. I love Layla and Jason both, but Layla, especially, I feel like I could relate to — while this is the story of a romance, it also plays heavily into mental health and her inner voice/auditory hallucination. As somebody who has lifelong struggles with her mental health, it’s so nice to be able to relate to a character in that way. And, Layla’s diabetes is a constant factor in the book. While I myself do not specifically have diabetes, I am physically disabled, and diabetes is technically considered a physical disability. Disability representation matters!!

Overall, such a good read and Jason IS WHAT A MAN SHOULD BE!!! God. Where can I get “Man Written By A Woman” in real life?

First off, let me say that I did really enjoy this book. The characters both had imperfections and found what they needed in each other.

My main issue is that in pretty much all romance books, there is a main arc- they meet, they grow feelings, they get bigger, fall in love, something horrible happens, they reunite, they live happily ever after.

The issue for me is that this book was super out of order. The horrible something was in a previous book so this book was just meeting, growing feelings, falling in love.

And while that’s cute and sweet, there was a point where my kindle told me I was 92% through and I was shocked because the arc just didn’t feel like it was…arc-ing.

Want a feel good sweet story? This is it. Want more angst and drama? Maybe not.

This is April Wilson!

What more can I say? I loved every page of this book, it's the kind that you start and you can't leave it until you finish. And when you get to the end, you are left wanting more. Always!
Layla, an heiress who just wants to be normal. Despite everything she had and still has to overcome in her life, this girl is strong and manages to get up every time.
Jason such a down to earth guy, so sweet and patient so committed to his work but especially to Layla. He doesn't just want to keep her safe, he wants her to be happy. It is impossible not to fall in love with him.
PS I can't wait to read more of Tyler and Ian's adventures. Those two are great!

brilliant!

Fantastic story

Jason is hired by Layla’s family to be her bodyguard after she is rescued from a brutal abduction. Already suffering from auditory hallucinations the experience sets her back tenfold.
During his time with her he sees what an amazing woman she is and starts to fall for her. Can her show her that she is worthy of the love she craves.

I’ve never read a book like this before. It’s was extremely eye opening to what people who suffer from this condition have to deal with. From the condition itself and from others who don’t understand it.
It was great to see such a supportive family dynamic also.
It was just so beautiful to see them get their HEA

In addition to being chronically medically compromised, college student/heiress Layla Alexander, is now traumatized after being betrayed, witnessing a shooting, sold to traffickers and beaten. When her McIntyre adjacent brother, Ian recommends them as Layla’s bodyguards, Jason Miller gets the 24/7 duty and thinks too bad the emotionally fragile woman is a client!

With so many obstacles to overcome the world is almost new for Layla, she can’t trust herself but really likes Jason and wants a relationship with him. Layla continues to push for Jason because he’s the only thing she wants more than to be a ‘normal’ young woman.

SUSPENSE! DRAMA! HEALING! REDEMPTION!

It’s all here ! Layla (Ian’s Sister) has to fight major demons mentally and cruelty by the ones that should have protected her! She’s sold by her former bodyguard into a sex traffic ring. She already had mental issues but this just amped them up. Then classmates and paparazzi taunt her. Alias her knight in shining armor-Jason. He has issues too. But they make each other stronger. I’d love to know more details after the last chapter (like where do they live? Do they get married? There are so many questions unanswered. But I LOVE THIS SERIES!

wow!

As a diabetes nurse it was great to read how accurately this was described from the effects on someone’s daily life although they did have access to the latest monitoring and treatment methods. Well done for accurately reflecting the effects of alcohol on blood sugars and how it can interfere with medication. Layla’s mental health condition was beautifully written and described and Jason’s empathetic response to her internal voice was perfect. I really enjoyed this book and the characters felt very real and true to life. A slightly different story but highly recommended.

loved

I absolutely love Jason. He is all alpha and cinnamon roll hero rolled into one. He is so swoon worthy. I love him for Layla. My heart hurt for Layla and what she survived. But also continues to survive each day. Her auditory hallucinations are like the true embodiment of every wicked thought to horrible self esteem voice girls grow up with. It makes it nice to see how Jason dealt with it. Loved how he wanted to learn so much about it and help her. His, “do you trust me or her?” Was awesome. Loved how he only wanted her happy. Even if that meant not him. Tyler and Ian are so amazing. And hilarious. Can’t wait for Liam.

As with all April Wilson books, the characters are so well written. This book was deeper and enlightening in regards to the issues the heroine has. April Wilson delved into some health issues and did it with grace and accuracy. The hero in the book was able to understand Layla completely, became protective of her and in turn developed feelings. He is torn because of his integrity and commitment to his job and the promise he made to her family not to get involved with the beautiful Layla. Sometimes things are just meant to be.

OMG

I have honest to God fallen in love with all of the characters this amazing author writes.

This story is so sweet. I laughed. I cried. I screamed. I swooned. Jason and Layla are adorable.

All of this author's stories are so well thought out and beautiful. I was waiting for this story and I'm so, so happy it's finally here.

I can't say enough. I just can't. I'm so in love with this book. If you're thinking about reading this, stop it. Just buy it. It's so beautifully incredible.

April does it again, I read this book in one sitting as I could not put this book down! Jason is the perfect bodyguard to help Layla, she has many issues but he gets her to accept she is perfect as she is. I did think her parents acceptance of them as a couple was a little easy, especially after Ian and Tyler's struggles to be accepted as a couple by Ian's parents, but I loved the book still. It is, as always with April's books, well written. It deserves more than 5 stars. I cannot wait for Liam's book! Get writing April please x

OMG, the ending? Why was it so abrupt? 😭
I was absolutely loving it, then it got cut off... I couldn't believe it was the last page (and without any epilogue!) Dear author, why? Just why? It definitely needed more. It wasn't a satisfactory ending at all,,,,, ugh

It was probably a 5 stars if it hadn't been for that. The characters were both so lovely. The book as a whole was absolutely endearing. It's been a long since I've read a novel that's rather slow-burn. This novel was absolutely worthy, though I'm kind of heartbroken about the ending. Can't get over that. Hmm...

“Finding Layla” by April Wilson is a new spin-off series from her McIntyre Security Bodyguard series. It’s a love story, which is very intense, based around mental health issues, a kidnapping, a bodyguard and more. Our main characters are Leyla, a heiress who wants to be normal – read the story for more background here – and Jason her new bodyguard who is a trained medic but also suffers from PTSD. This is a great book but I was disappointed at the ending. I was so involved with these characters and was totally immersed in their journey together, but felt there was more to explore before the given ending. As always April Wilson’s books are a great read and covers many topics that aren’t the norm, which is one of the reasons that she is one of my “must read” authors.

Love at first sight

We so need more books which contain characters with mental health issue, this book brings together a young woman with Audible hallucinations which constantly put her down making her doubt everything. Enter one sensitive medically trained bodyguard who holds his own mental health issues as most veteran's do with PTSD. He makes her feel safe and they call for each other. Slow burn romance but you fall in love with these characters. Such a great story you rock April Wilson.

Amazing Series!!!!!

I could soak up these characters all day long! April Wilson has done it again with this newest release in the McIntyre Security Series. Jason and Layla are amazing characters are their journey deals with very emotional and serious topics. As always the research that must have been done shines through the pages to bring these characters to life, and a bonus pop-in from a few known characters also. In a positive way, I just wish it was longer as I could read about these characters all day. Congratulations on another fantastic release in this series⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

He's the one!

Excellent story about Layla and her very hard working rich parents with her brother Ian whom we know from the Tyler Jamison Series. Layla has a new Bodyguard Jason who works as a Paramedic and Security for the McIntyre company. Having been abducted and rescued after her previous bodyguard sold her to pay off his drug habit then got shot for his troubles, Layla is still struggling to pull her life back on track. So looking forward to reading more in both Series.

Who do you trust

Layla and Jason. Quite the interesting case and client. The combination of physical and mental danger was unique and kept Jason, the family, and me on our toes. I wish more was said about the mental since the voice only started two years ago. Tyler was so different in this book compared to the original series with his sister. I have not read the book either him and Ian yet, but I imagine it is a doozy! The ending is somewhat rushed, but overall this is a good read.
