"She is so pure, this version of you. But I know the real you."
International Popstar Charley Otto abides by two rules to protect his sanity while living in the spotlight. 1: Don’t believe anything you read online. 2: Leave the past behind.
But those rules fly out the window every time flowers arrive at his doorstep with lines from The Regret—a viral fan fiction story penned by a mystery woman that sounds a little too familiar.
"I want to be some version of the person she wrote, even in all his imperfections."
Desperate to find the identity of his secret admirer, Charley hires a private investigator who finally gives him the name of the woman he deserted over a decade ago. And upon arrival at Scarlette Shannon’s book signing, the two artists realize the spark they felt that night never burnt out.
"Rewrite it any way you want. Fiction and reality rarely meet in the middle. And we were reality."
As Charley and Scarlette’s second chance fractures under the microscope of fame, threats from a shadow in their past escalate—threatening to expose the secrets Scarlette hoped would stay buried.
And all love affairs have to face the truth eventually.

This was such a captivating read it completely sucked me in from the first line I was hooked I literally couldn’t put it down till it ended! The suspense keeps you turning page after page and the romance was swoon worthy it’s angsty it’s steamy the chemistry between the characters is sizzling hot this author takes us on a thrilling mysterious and suspenseful ride and I loved every word of it!.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
SO excited for the final product of this!!! I thoroughly enjoyed this romance and would love to delve deeper into the backstories of the characters. I was brought back to the butterflies of my first crushes with this one!
May 29 review update :
The Regret grabs you the moment you begin and drives you through flirtations and retaliations.
Scarlette and Charley have a single chance meeting that spurs years of longing and curiosity. When they reconnect, they aren’t the only ones who begin untangling the past.
The characters are realistic, relatable, believable given their circumstances.
I love that this book is about a self made successful and proud woman. Not some down and out who needs rescuing. We don’t always see this and I love the showing of a well off young woman focused on resolving some pleasure in her life, going after her desires.
If you’d like a page turning, steamy love story with some twists-this book has you covered!
Maaaan… that first sentence hits like WHOA. 😳 I really never know what kind of story I’m going to get when I read a J R Rogue story. I was expecting romance. Was this romantic? Yes. Absolutely!! But I was STRESSED almost the whole time!! The stalker/ suspense aspect took me by surprise. So creepy. And little scary. What a stressful way to start a relationship!
-Also, how meta was this?? Fan fiction about fan fiction? Love it! Reading this made me feel like Rogue’s stalker. From the way she wrote nods to her friends works in this one. The sibling relationship Scarlette has with her brother. The relationship the main characters have and struggle with social media, alcohol and other substances. All the references to the art. “To write is to carve out a piece of yourself and lay it on the line”.
I loved this concept. Loved the execution. Loved that this world is being expanded.
From the very first page, Rogue draws the reader in with some intrigue. I thoroughly enjoyed #2 of the Red Note Series. You don't have to read #1, The Rebound, to know what's happening as they are both standalones .. but you should. The Regret is mysterious and sexy; it's all your teenage pop star dreams come true. We get to know Charley and Scarlette through their second chance romance and try to figure who on earth has it out for them! Their dynamic is beautiful as they navigate their lives of fame and fortune and help each other grow, in spite of the crazy world around them. They are steamy and raw... And you will barely see the twist coming!! Pick up this book if you want a good escape!
I love how complex JR Rogue's stories are, and this one did not disappoint. I fell in love with both Charley and Scarlette between these pages. Their love story is filled with all the good things that make a great story.....angst, chemistry, suspense, drama, emotional trauma, and love. I was sent a complimentary copy and I am choosing to leave my honest review.
A very intriguing and exciting story. It’s romance with some mystery or maybe mystery with romance. You decide for yourself. Either way it was fast pace read that captures your attention from the start.

I’ve been waiting for this one since I first heard Jen hint about it. It did not disappoint! It was sweet and swoony and full of intrigue and I couldn’t stop reading. Jen’s muse came alive on the pages and I found myself smiling often picturing Charley with all of his boyish charm. Highly recommend this one! Well done, Jen!
Wow this story is so good. Once I started reading Scarlette and Charley’s story I couldn’t put it down. The added intrigue of the stalker made it even more tense! JR Rogue just gets better with every book and this latest is my favourite so far.
Being immersed in the Red Note World once again was such a ride, each story in this series gives us a new, swoon worthy hero, who we can't help but love!
Charley and Scarlette's story has a very unconventional start. Scarlette has always admired Charley as one of the most famous pop stars, when they plummet into each others world's they don't expect this love to be threatened by a ghost from their past.
This story is filled with so much angst and once I became fully immersed in the story I could not put it down, I wanted to know what happens next while delaying finishing the book all at once and that is my favourite type of book to read.
Charley and Scarlette now have a very special place in my heart. Scarlette living every authors dream life and Charley, sweet dreamy Charley is everything we all want in a book boyfriend!
Rogue is gifted in crafting worlds, I could see this book play out before me , live scenes from a movie and I never wanted it to end. I can't wait to read this story again and again and again and again and....I think you get it!
”It was a night that never should have happened—a memory I could never shake—and immortalizing it was the only way I knew how to forget it.”
Talk about bringing fan-fiction to life like never before. We’ve all read them, fell in love with the authors who wrote them…maybe even penned a few words in hopes to become the next big name in literature for our contribution to the fiction world. We all share a common bond, a word, a feeling that stems from every page: LOVE.
This book, this story gives us exactly that. Love. On every page, bled into the prose and waiting for our eyes to devour. It’s past and present, mystery and routine, angst and desire. I couldn’t wait to get away from life just so I could actually enjoy every chapter as I did when I read it in Alpha phase. It became less about being critical (which I both love and hate) and more about falling into the story for simple enjoyment.
And enjoy I did. Rogue does a beautiful job of creating worlds where I, the reader, can fully relate. I feel a part of the story…almost creepily, because it truly is happening before my eyes. That is a true testament of good storytelling—and J.R. Rogue is just that. I look forward to further works, both from an Alpha standpoint, and a reader…it’s been an honor and privilege to be both for The Regret.
From the moment that The Regret was announced i couldn't wait to get into it! Having read Ms.Rogue's work many times before, especially The Rebound had me wanting to pick it up even more! I picked it up as soon as i could and got back into the Red Note world! I really enjoyed this story so very much!
Charley and Scarlette’s journey hooked me right from the get go! As these two are brought back into each other's lives, i couldn't wait to see how everything would play out for them!
I really liked getting to see these two tackle the past as well as the present! I was so glad that i got to jump into both of their minds and dig deeper with them! The chemistry between these two was undeniable! I loved how i went through many emotions throughout reading their story.
The Red Note world pulls you in and doesn't let go! I wasn't sure what all to expect in this story which i so enjoyed!
With The Regret, Ms.Rogue has created such a great read with uniqueness that will keep you glued to your kindle! If you haven't gotten into her writing, you so need to this year! This is one author not to be missed! I can't wait to dive back into the Red Note world with the third installment, The Risk!
*I volunteered to read and review a copy of this book from the author*
Remember when you had crushes on celebrities? Like maybe one singer or this model and you would dream up little scenarios where you’d fall in love and live happily ever after. In reality, at any age you will have a celebrity crush. BUT what if you manifested it all into happening years later.
The Regret is that and more. It’s two creatives searching out and finding muses in one another. J.R. Rogues gives us the unrequited feelings while making them attainable at the same time and then she mixes in suspense.
When we meet Charley, we see his status his fame, but we see a man who also feels lost, one of the things keeping him grounded a story. A story he can’t forget and longs to remember. Then we meet Scarlette, an author who has honed her craft so well that her life keeps getting more and more amazing, all while she keeps one of her best stories silent to the world.
A story that brings these two together threatens the story they are creating. J.R. Rogue has this masterful ability to create the romance we crave, the suspense that makes it hard to put down all with a storyline that has a relatability that we never knew we needed.
I was really anticipating The Regret back when it was announced. I went in not really knowing where the story was going to go and it did not disappoint. Charley a famous pop star and Scarlette a writer met one memorable night and at the end Charley ghosted Scarlette but neither ever forgot the other. When they are brought back together those feelings that never went away only intensify. As they try to navigate a relationship while dealing with Charley's fame, threats from someone who doesn't want them together and Scarlette's secrets they both have to decide whether to live with regret or move forward. I loved this book. All of JR Rogue's books are written so well with such beautiful words that I get lost in the story and anxiously await her next release.

let me start this off by saying that is definitely a way to start a book. That first sentence had me like
I was hooked. I enjoyed this read very much. Similar to the first book I’ve read by this author the storytelling and the writing had me super intrigued.
I loved charley and Scarlette’s love story being a HUGE twilight fan fic reader back in the day this gave me ALL THE FEELS. Like hello?! That’s story gold right there…
Also I loved how Charley and Scarlette’s story evolved.. the hopeless romantic in me was reading parts of this story like
My only teeny tiny critique is the ending of the whole jack storyline it was very anticlimactic like after all the ruckus you caused sir that’s it?
Also 5 years into the future epilogue I wanted to see what happened with Scarlette’s brother.. her parents alicjia (probably misspelled)
I could see myself reading more by this author in the future I do enjoy her story telling and it’s opened a different type of romance genre for me that I didn’t think I’d like ☺️
So I have had THE WORST time trying to read lately, and then this fell in my hands. I really love this series. The Rebound? Chef's kiss. The Regret? The Rebound's naughty ass little sister. This had a hot hot romance mixed with a little mystery. I enjoyed trying to guess who certain characters may have been inspired by, and hell, by the end of it...I was kind of like Charlie Puth is kinda hot 👀?!? I am truly looking forward to seeing her future projects because the bish is like fine wine. She just keeps getting better.
Wow! I received this novel by the author herself through a giveaway! Let begin by saying, I read this novel before reading the first one. I couldn't even tell! The way she starts with the 2 main characters just sucked me in. I was invested by the first couple of chapters. I love love and I love happy endings. The Regret is definitely a top 2 favorite new read of this year! Job well done and I am beyond thankful that I received this as a gift.
Who knew that meeting your dream crush would be amazing and mysterious. That is exactly what happens with Charley and Scarlette. We live their lives through the past and present. Enjoyed (well written) the difficulties they dealt with. Worth reading again.

We all have regrets in our lives and for Scarlette it all starts with one night, one guy and the fantasy that expands within her mind. As a writer she has to get it all out. She just never realized it wasn't the end of the story, because he apparently felt the same way about their evening...
An exciting story that captures the reader’s attention from the start. A fast paced mystery with a touch of romance. The characters and plot are perfectly molded together that makes for an exhilarating read.

I loved this book. The characters had such chemistry. I love the reconnection and the thrill this book provides. It’s a huge difference from the first book in the red note series but I love the brush with the characters from the first! This book has sizzle and steam paired with a little mystery and suspense that makes you keep reading and thinking about the book afterwards. Jen’s talent screams throughout this book and I love her writing so much!
“You can’t be a couple if you’ve never even been in a relationship.”
Ok. I’m just going to say what everyone is thinking. J.R. Rogue is incapable of writing anything that isn’t amazing. Every time I read one of her books I think, ok, this is the best she’s ever written. And then the next book comes out and I’m thinking the same thing again.
Well, this time I mean it. This is the best book she’s ever written. Goodness gracious it’s unbelievable. It’s like a fanfic about a fanfic only a thousand times better! I love, love, love Charley. He is so honest with himself about who he is and what his life has become. I mean he reads his own fanfics and finds many of them amusing. Scarlette is so strong and defined. She knows who she is and makes no apologies for it. These two have amazing chemistry and I enjoyed watching their relationship grow as they fell in love. Don’t read any reviews that spoil the plot. Just get it and enjoy. This is rockstar romance at its very best.

I love the Red Note series these books are amazing! I really enjoyed this one and how it seemed to be a totally different experience than the first. It seemed to be more of a thriller/suspense/romance. It was so nice to see brushes of characters from book one in the Red Note series in here too! I was hooked from the first page!
This is the story of Scarlette, a young writer, who pours her heart out through her words of the fantasy, mixed with reality, of a fan crush. The object of her affections is Charley, a popular rock star whose star is falling, due to his own risky behavior, but that's not a deterrent for her. Charley and Scarlette have one glorious night together, but he leaves the next morning, and she realizes that she has to forget about him. It's not that simple. Charley is surprised that he questions himself, as to why he left so soon, because he can't get her out of his mind. Scarlette is an author whose fantasy story about her night with Charley, becomes an internet sensation, particularly since it's anonymous. But when Charley and Scarlette cross paths, again, it's anything but fantasy, unless you consider it living a fantasy in the real world. They are so good together, but there's a stalker who seems to know everything about them. The mystery is part thriller and part sadness for the person and the circumstances. I would have liked to see more of a satisfying ending. It was a nice HEA but rushed through two short epilogues that included a symbolic proposal.
Regret is such a strong word which often comes with a negative tone. But what if it can be positive, how would you flip it? Scarlett Shannon is a successful writer but just like everyone else she had to start somewhere. Charley Otto is a popular but again, he had to start somewhere. Both Charley and Scarlette's lives crossed one fateful night at a party where neither one forgot about the other. This story covers the beginning (their past), the present (their current state of turmiol) and the future which both characters are uncertain of. It was a thrilling ride that took the reader in the world of fame, its glitz and glimmer and its.deep, dark costs. Great read!.

This super sweet read is perfect for escaping bruised emotions & you need nothing but the sugary sweetness. It's not full of all the angst but does have some emotions to work through. This is definitely going in my favorites for those days I need something to help me, without all the really negative & angry emotions to work through.

The Regret by J.R. Rogue. I thought this story and characters were good and I found the book to be entertaining. The author does a great job keeping you vested in their story, their passion, and consumption. This book is filled with plenty of intense drama, undeniable heat, and emotion. Charley and Scarlette’s second chance love story is wonderful. I would recommend this book and author to others. I thought The Rebound was always going to be my guilty pleasure. And then I read The Regret. Is it too soon for a reread? Charley and Scarlette’s love story is tangled with lust, fear, uncertainty, and regret, yet still somehow finds a way to mold its way into a perfect match. Pulling the world of fan fiction into a novel made the writer in me giddy. This book is phenomenal and my only regret is that I didn’t read it as soon as I bought it.
While I did enjoy the book, I felt that it had a lot of tension (both romantic and suspense) that sometimes blurred or slowed down the plot. The characters had quite a bit of depth to them and were easy to relate to though, which still made this a compelling book to read.

The plot, be it fantasy or fiction, feels relatable and current. We may not all end up manifesting our dreams, career or love life wise but the pressures facing us affect everybody. JR Rogue manages, again, to write in a way that feels like I'm seeing it happen. The shaming of romance books is all to real.
