The story mainly focuses on Charlie McGee who is a gang land boss and feared by many. He definitely isn't a very nice man and there isn't anything he wouldn't stoop low enough to do. At times I wondered if he even had a heart!

We are introduced to a few of his minions who I had mixed feelings for. As much as I didn't agree with the kind of work they were doing, to a certain extent you could understand how they had got themselves into it and now that they were there, there is no way out.

Having read a lot of the books in the series, the fact that this is a prequel means you really don't have to have read the others in the series. Of course fans of the series are going to want to read it. Alec himself, doesn't really come into the story until further into it and it did kind of feel like he was more in the back ground, which personally I would have liked him to have been more at the front but it doesn't stop it from being a really entertaining read.

The nature of the story will certainly appeal to fans of Martina Cole and Casey Kelleher. It is very dark and gritty with some heart stopping moments. Without a doubt, Nearly Dead, is yet another guaranteed page turner from the author. One to keep you on the edge of your seat and that will not only shock and horrify, but thrill and excite.

(Prequel to THE CHILD TAKER)

To begin with, this is a brand new author to me. Not having read any of the others in this series, and not knowing anything about Detective Ramsey, I felt at a complete disadvantage.

Even though Detective Ramsey is a steady character in this book, I did not get a sense of really who he was. The main players were all the drug dealers, their friends, their clients. Full of blood and guts, it's a gritty story with multiple bodies falling in horrendous ways.

The language was really rough, and I understand it's what most people expect of low-life characters like the drug lords. Too much of a good thing.

I really hoped this would be a good read, but it just wasn't my cup of tea.

That being said, I'm sure many will fully appreciate this author, his stories, and his writing.

Many thanks to the author and TBC for the digital copy. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

I have read two others books by Conrad Jones and both got 5 stars from me, this one is no exception. Nearly Dead is the prequel to The Child Taker and I have to admit I have not read it yet, or any other book in the DI Alec Ramsay series. I definitely need to rectify that!

This book hooks you in from the start and keeps the pace going all the way through. Quite gruesome and violent in places but I loved it. I can't wait to start reading The Child Taker now.

An easy 5 stars from me for this one.

I wanted to read this prequel before I start on the DS Alec Ramsay series. Right from the start, it was full of gangsters, violence and blood - I loved it! The book is full of intensity and there were some parts that had me holding my breath, dreading what was going to happen next. This is full of drama and is extremely fast paced. I cannot wait to read The Child Taker next. I highly recommend this book.

I don't know what possessed Jones to write a prequel, but I am pleased he did.
The child taker in one sick character, and I am half way through the series...but, when I saw this was out I needed to backtrack to read it, before reading on.
Wow, it is like falling down a grim hole and you have to fight your way through the mire, grit and gruesome minds of the characters, to come out the other side and breathe fresh air again.
A squirmy read that is as unsettling as it is brilliant.
I highly recommend to read this new addition to the series.
An array of perfectly written baddies, that you need to know what the out come for them is.
Jones is a gritty writer with a talent for showing some humanity in a few of his characters that are the sludge of mankind.
Leaving you needing to know what happens next, even though the grimness leaves you little desire to read on.
Whether you have previously read this series or new to it, this is a book you must read

Nearly Dead

I absolutely love Conrad Jones’ writing but haven’t read any of his books for a while; Nearly Dead has got me hooked again! It was great to get back into the grittiness and the rawness of his writing. The Child Taker was the first book I read by Jones and so to find out some background from before that was great!

I highly recommend Nearly Dead although it’s not for the faint hearted. It’s a fast paced thriller that will have you on the edge of your seat. Warning, you will fast become addicted to this series!! Five shiny stars from purplebookstand!

Sickness at the heart of the human psyche!

Just how can one living person inflict such pain and suffering on a fellow human? Except that in this story there were loads of them, not just lowlife drug dealing gangsters but, senior medical professionals as well. This tale was not for the faint hearted. It was dark, brooding and cruel but, at the same time, a damned good read.

This is one of those books that you start, thinking that you'll just read a bit of it, and then you're several chapters into it. Drug gangs, drones, murders and mincemeat of dubious origin all combine to make this a captivating read, although at times, a slightly stomach churning one!

Thanks to TBC for allowing me to read this fantastic book. A fast paced thriller/horror full of blood, guts and gore. A gritty read that keeps you mesmerized and on edge from start to finish, holding your attention on each and every thrilling page. I would certainly not like to meet these characters in a lonely place on a dark night. Read if you dare!!!

Nearly dead by Conrad Jones
I have not read any of Jone's other books and as this is a prequel some confusion that existed around the evolving storyline was due to that fact.
Having said that this is a tightly written fast moving story of gangland violence, rivalry and revenge. The twist that appears towards the end will have me heading off to Amazon to download the other books in this series. My only issue from reading this as a stand alone is there is little character background on the main detective Alec Ramsey, but hopefully all the information I need will be in the other books. So yes I really enjoyed this book in all its gory violence and am happy to give it 4 stars.

I don't know how he does it! Yet again Mr Jones has created a story of the most repugnant and evil men who are so absorbing in their vile behaviour that you simply can't stop reading. It is, in fact, ten to one in the morning, and I am so impressed by the writing, the characterisation and the depths of depravity documented, I felt I couldn't possibly go to sleep until I'd written my review. This is a superb prequel to The Child Taker and the back story is appropriately abusive and appalling. I am running out of plaudits with which to shower Mr Jones. I will finish by saying this is a fascinating and engrossing story that I highly recommend. Be prepared to lose some sleep! Another masterful piece of writing.

You know when you read the blurb and are really excited to read the book? Well it was like that for me. Unfortunately for some reason I felt let down. I can’t put my finger on what exactly was wrong, but this book definitely wasn’t one for me. 2.5*

Charlie McGee, a drug gang boss, is throwing his weight about at the beginning of this gripping and gruesome novel. He has got where he is by sheer ruthlessness and by threatening a dreadful death to those who defy him – and to their loved ones. He’s not the only kingpin in the city, as he is shortly to discover. DI Alec Ramsey is on the trail after a body is found. His team soon uncover more than a drug ring.

This is my first taste of Conrad Jones’s work and, as this is a prequel, it is leading me on to the first in the Alec Ramsey series. I don’t think I shall be long following the trail! The story is horrific enough for any blood-and-guts reader, with intricate plotting and some horrific detail! It’s an excellent idea to have a prequel like this as it has set up the first in the series very well. Seriously readable stuff.

Once again Conrad Jones has written a gritty, gruesome gory, but brilliant book. Once I started reading this fast paced crime thriller, I couldn't put it down. This being the prequel to The Child Taker I had to psyche myself up to encounter the world of gangland drugs and murder yet again, but more importantly, the vile and obnoxious paedophile Jack Howarth. DI Alec Ramsay and the team are tasked with tackling drug gangs and murders in the city of Liverpool. The gangland characters in Nearly Dead are frighteningly ruthless. Especially the character of Charlie McGee.
This book is definitely not for the faint hearted but it is a fantastic gripping crime thriller and I loved it!

This is my second Conrad Jones book. The first I read was Child Taker and it had been at the bottom of my TBR pile for about a year. Since reading that first one, I’ve been a fan. This one was as on point as Child Taker. The author seems to write books which keep you engrossed and swoop from one exciting event to another. A difficult subject matter, which is handled with care. One other positive for me, is that unlike other detective series’, the main character does not swamp the story. Each character is given a good billing. Would definitely recommend, if you like a good psychological thriller.

I'm sorry to say this just wasn't for me. gritty, dark and tough to read books I can deal with and am often drawn too but for me this felt like it was packed too full of grit and evilness for the sake of it and it felt like it affected the possibility of a real storyline developing. Just not my cup of tea sorry!

Nearly Dead by Conrad Jones
Do not start this book unless you can be free of everything for five or six hours! I am delighted to find this is a prequel to a series I have not read. Fast paced and covering the darkest side of humanity in its many forms, the book has some truly horrific passages that are alluded to but rarely spelt out in detail. One’s imagination can more than fill the blanks to terrify oneself.

Believable characters make this gripping story come to life. It would make a superb stand alone TV drama or series, if the rest of the books live up to this promise. Top marks Mr Jones! You have made a fan.

Was about to read The Child Taker when I found out it was one of a series and this was the prequel. I've read this over two sittings. Brilliant. So glad I started with this. The way all the characters and story lines were pulled together was fantastic. Can't wait to start on the rest of the books. Massive 5 stars Conrad Jones !

Much to my shame, I haven't read any of the DI Alec Ramsay books and I thought reading this book would be a good introduction to the series. Even more embarrassing, I had bought books 1 & 2 nearly two years ago and they had been sitting in my TBR pile that whole time. At least I have them there to read, every cloud has a silver lining, and all of that.

This was a terrific read and I found myself completely gripped by the interwoven stories in this book. DI Ramsay is a dedicated police officer and through hard graft he painstakingly gathers together the evidence he needs to convict the various criminal elements who are running amok in his city. I am sure that he has wondered, more than once, why the good guys always seem to be playing catch-up. Sometimes the criminals get set free too, event though they are clearly guilty, which I am sure is one of the most frustrating things that police officers have to contend with. There are a lot of deaths in this book; some of them very satisfying indeed.

I gave this book a well-deserved 5 stars and am looking forward to reading the next one, knowing there are already seven books in the series at this point in time.

Having accidentally read this out of sequence with The Anglesey Murders series, it carried well as a standalone and I really enjoyed it. Savage, brutal and twisty and I'll certainly check out the series some time soon.

This is the first book by Conrad Jones that I have ever read. For most of the book I was absolutely engrossed and found it gripping and unputdownable. It was packed full of action, which is just exactly what I love. Charlie McGee is a cruel and tyrannical drug lord and you are just dying to see him get his comeuppance once and for all. There was a huge variety of different characters from all walks of life in the book, some really evil, some just normal citizens just trying to make it through life, and I thought they were all well developed and you could understand them all and what motivated each one. I especially liked the tough, strong and resourceful female characters. I only had a couple of issues, one is that I would have liked to see more development of the characters and the roles of the detectives in the story, especially taking into account that this is a DI Alex Ramsey book from the DI Alex Ramsey series, so I would have liked to have a greater glimpse into the personal lives of the detectives, as well as see them playing a bigger role in the book. As it was, I felt like for most of the book the detectives were just sort of like stand-ins or filler characters, who didn't do a lot of things. I didn't get the impression that they were very efficient, at any rate, which is a bit sad considering that the whole series is supposed to be dedicated to them. The other issue was that I felt like all the goodies died too easily whereas it was just impossible for any of the baddies to die, no matter what happened to them. Of course, when I reached the end of the book I realized that this is actually a prequel to the series, and that the villains couldn't die at the end of the book because they have to continue on to the rest of the series. All the same I still felt a bit let down that the villains got away, even though I know that in real life bad people often do get away with bad things. But you'd just sort of like justice to be served out in your fiction haha. Although I trust (hope!) that by the end of the series the villains should all get what's coming to them.

I was so confused as to what rating to give this book right up until the last page. I started of thinking this was about 2 stars for me, then moved to 3 about half way through and ended up with 4 so it's an obvious grower for me.

Firstly I need to say that I have never read any other books by Conrad Jones and understand that this is a prequel to a series already published. Knowing that I now fully understand the journey this book took to set the scene for the first book in the series.

However the blurb was a complete fluke for me. I went back to the blurb numerous times whilst reading the book thinking I was reading the wrong book as the blurb suggested that the book takes of when something terrible is found at an old farmhouse. This doesn't happen until well into the book.

For me this was a little too much. Very gritty, detailed torture and murder scenes, drug and money underworld - a world I am not that familiar with as a reader (or otherwise I am happy to say). There are a lots of different characters that keep popping up and dropping like flies and until it came to the farmhouse and things started to slot into place more. So in that way this was actually very cleverly written as it really does make the reader want to delve into that dark world again and read the first book in the series.

Overall - I didn't think this was for me, but actually I think I will look out for this author again.

Thank you very much to TBConFB and the author for access to this book.

I was excited to read this book, and thrilled to pick it up in a goodreads giveaway. I'm always excited to find a new series of detective / agent / crime fighter of whatever variety novels. This book is billed as part of "the Alec Ramsay series". Unfortunately, Alec Ramsay is sorely missing from the pages. He appears rarely, and when he does, he could easily be replaced with any other character without affecting much. I wonder if he is more prominent in the books that follow, but I don't think I'll continue in the series and find out.

This is not so much a detective novel as it is a criminal novel. Their misdeeds are followed in graphic detail. And it is just not for me. That's not to say it's not for anyone, and even without the reviews I'd guess there would be a good number of fans as it brings to mind the ever increasing graphic violence in movies and television series, as each seems to try to outdo the last. This book is for someone who wants to read of the crimes and criminals without the buffer of the investigator.

I was also irked that in the end, the story didn't feel complete; it felt it was just a setup for the next book. I wondered if it were simply because of the limitations of being a prequel, but reviews of the next gave me the impression that the series will continue in this vein.

I'm still interested enough in the plot to be curious about reading the next book, but with no real attachment to a solid protagonist, I think I'll spare myself the graphic detail.
