Everything in the Darkfell Clan world puts you at risk. From the twisted king determined to kill me, to the demonic revenants hunting me down, it seems everyone wants me dead.
Lucky for me I’ve found powerful allies—a sexy warrior with a heart of gold, an arrogant trickster who’s as good with a knife as he is with words, and a reclusive ancient whose wounds run too deep to heal.
Our love makes us strong, but it could become the lever that breaks us apart.
I didn’t want a war, but when Viktor takes something that’s mine, he needs to learn the truth.
Fueled by black coffee, ice cream and bad nineties music, L.A. McGinnis spends her days writing best-selling steamy fantasies filled with damaged heroes who long to be whole and smart, authentic heroines. A life-long fascination with storytelling inspired her to weave these contemporary tales of legendary fated mates where the princess never needs rescuing, but sometimes the hero does.
Dann! This series is getting better as it goes along. I can't wait for the next instalment. This book was bloody amazing! I literally couldn’t put it down, I love the plot of the book, I love how well written the book was. But most of all, I loved the characters and how easy it was to relate to our heroine.
This is a fantastic read. The world L A McGinnis has here is a detailed one. I really liked the complications of the love interest and the court dramatics.
Seraphina continues to learn how to control her magic aided by her trusted guards and her not so trusted advisor Deston. Deston has been keeping secrets but he does have Seraphina’s best interests at heart. This book introduces a new character Katarina who is older and more threatening and evil than Viktor was in his lifetime. Deston and Seraphina learn just how connected they really are and then broken apart. Looking forward to the third book and the conclusion to this suspenseful tale of Darkfell Vampire Queen and her royal guard.
** Cliffhanger Warning!** Oh my fangs! I love this book! It's a fantasy, reverse harem romance with vampires in Louisiana who have magic. There's plenty of fast-paced action, thrilling suspense, breath-taking battles, steamy scenes, and an evil villain or two. This is not a stand-alone book, and I highly recommend reading Book 1, Night Marked, before starting this part of Seraphina’s journey. While there is a little exposition, it’s worked into the dialogue and sprinkled throughout the story.
I enjoyed how Seraphina struggled with learning to wield her magic in the first half of the story. The reasons why are one of the things I like most about this character. Seraphina is still a bit angsty teenager combined with smart and sassy (former) college student. She has a big heart and tries to do what she thinks is right, while almost everything is going wrong around her. She learns from her mistakes, and she uses them to learn more about herself.
It was fun to see her back-talking Deston during their training sessions. I have mixed feelings about him, but by the end I kind of loved him. I’m still impressed by Luthor and Cyrus. It’s obvious how much they love Seraphina. I like how they all try to figure out their relationships, their magics, and the plans to keep each other safe, take down the villain(s), and save the vampire race. I wished they had more time in the spotlight, but this book was mostly about Seraphina getting control of her magic, so there’s a lot of Deston.
It’s also fun to see these two antique vampires using modern technology and learning current slang. Cyrus, especially, seems to be acclimating well. I think these guys might have a surprise or two up their sleeves.
I especially enjoyed the big battle at the climax. Lots of cool magic, the explanations and descriptions were amazing, but the action never slowed down. One villain down, one to go…
I am super excited to read the next book in the series!
L.A. McGinnis ate and left no crumbs with this one and I didn't leave any crumbs either the way I devoured this book ooooohhhhh my God. Such a good book. 4.75 stars. Really good, so much going on.. like so so so much happened in these pages when sometimes it feels like I'll read a long book where nothing happens? This is the opposite. A longish book that is so jam packed to the brim that it almost couldn't contain it. So purposeful and real and good. Been soooo long since I've loved characters this much. I almost cried like twice during this book 😭😭. Guhhh and Deston and Seraphina? I Kneel 🧎♀️. Queen Katarina is soooooooooo. Evil horrible awful but she makes me think of Countess Marburg from Salem 2014 on Hulu played by Lucy Lawless that she makes me see stars. This book is so good and cool and I think the author did a fantastic job of creating a huge world, and she's good about how she trickles the information out. As with any indie book there's some grammatical/editing mistakes but I can't be drawn to care about them simply because the book, even if it had MORE of these mistakes, is so good and feels like it was written FOR ME brjshsiahsia... and that's coming from someone who despises editing mistakes. I still don't like Luthor. Like at all. Idk how that happened lol but he's so annoying and whiny. Seraphina is annoying too but she's soooo real she's badass too. Cyrus always awesome. Aummmmmm good book. 👍 The amount of Deston passages I have highlighted LOL L.A. McGinnis u knew what u were doing with him.. artful!!!!! Cooking !!!!! I think how fast I finished this book (considering how long it usually takes me to read) is definitely a testament to how gripping it is.
This was a great follow up to the beginning of the series. Im really partial to stories with strong female characters AND vampires! This one takes place most at Dragon duRayne's castle so he could train her. I really like the Luthor and Cyrus characters. They are smart, important but not overpowering. A lot happens in this story and its plotted, as well as written, very well. Describing Deston:
"His smile was hard and brittle, not a shred of warmth. One hand rested on his ever-present silver cane, his black hair seemed to absorb— rather than reflect— the light. In his black, bespoke suit, the elder vampire was handsome, I’d give him that, but all I wanted was to wipe that arrogant smile off his face."
The story dragged a bit in the middle as important information was told, but I would argue that the author had little choice. I believe at least most of the information needed to be told then so I don't fault her for it. And there was areas where Seraphina seems to act out of character and put people in jeopardy... But there is an interesting reveal that happens mid story that explains a lot! And while I saw the other reveal that happens towards the end a mile away, it was still fun to read and enhanced the story. This author has so far done a stellar job with this story and I will definitely be reading the rest to see where it goes.
In the second book, Cyrus, Seraphina, and Luthor are on the run from Viktor and his revenants. Cyrus takes them to his cousin Deston. Deston is 400 years old and is very familiar with court politics. He has agreed to harbor them from Viktor and train Seraphina with her magic. He has served other queens in the past but has also assisted with Viktor getting the crown. He has made many mistakes, betrayed many others, and always thought of himself…until now~ The relationship that derives from his knowing Seraphina will be a game changer for everyone. He will commit a betrayal that will cost him in the end…it costs him his true mate and her love. There will be many battles to come, more secrets to unveil, and another deadlier enemy than Viktor makes an appearance that will have a hold on Deston. In her bid to kill Viktor, gain the throne, and to go up against the newest enemy…Seraphina will have to learn many things, do things that will make her feel dreadful, and most of all…lose something that is the most precious to her…but out of them all…who will live to fight another day? Continue the action-packed journey of the Darkfell clan….
Seraphina has become the queen of the Darkfell vampire clan after a bloody battle with Viktor. She is determined to be a much different queen than those who came before her. Unfortunately, when she defeated the king she made a very powerful enemy who stole something very precious to her. Now, with help from Luthor and Cyrus she will have to learn to survive the treachery of her new subjects, and keep innocents safe. These characters don't disappoint as they evolve to be even more fascinating and unique. They are all very well written and their reactions and interactions kept me absorbed in their story. Action packed, bloody battles, and magic. Plenty of steamy encounters, and surprising twists in the plot kept me engrossed in the pages of this wonderful vampire romance from the first page to the last.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
Okay, so after the beautiful, slow burn building climax of the last book, my expectations for this book were already pretty high. After reading this book, all I can say about it is that it blew me out of the water! The build continues, the plot thickens.. I couldn't have possibly asked for a better continuation to this amazing series! Faced with impossible odds, Seraphina continues on her mission to overthrow a mad king and free her kingdom. She faces many enemies and questions loyalties, all while learning to harness her newfound power. Of course, there's some twists along way, and a cliffhanger ending that has me NEEDING the next book! If you're a fan of fantasy/romance and haven't read this book yet, do so now! Although you do need to start from book one to really understand what is going on (but it's totally worth it)!
Boy. The action really picked up quickly on this one. After reading the last story, I grumbled that there was so much left unresolved. This story resolves a LOT of those issues quite nicely. There are whole new story arcs opening up and the promise of lots more action, adventure and yummy vampire good guys, but we know a lot more about Serafina, her consorts, the royal court and the vampire world in general. There are a few new good guys (an girls) to meet, villains to hate and lore to discover - not to mention a fledgling court with new enemies we hadn't even dreamed of at the end of the last book. I really enjoyed this one and I'm looking forward to finding out what challenges the new queen and her court will have to confront next.
Jumping right in, if you find yourself concerned with some of Sera's actions, stick it out. It comes around. I too, did some brow raising at times. The story slowed slightly towards the middle and I did book hop a bit to keep from losing interest. I don't think it's so much the book itself as it was having the knowledge that there's more to come. I get easily overwhelmed when I know a series I'm reading is lengthy and I have to wait rather than binge read.
I do think waiting until this series is complete and binging it would be beneficial to more avid readers. I lost some information between reads and had to do some skimming and note checking. I'm certainly going to be sticking with this one because it has really been fantastic.
The second book of this series really ratches up the tension and secrets. Some things are answered as Seraphina begins to come into her powers. Learning more of who she is, and becoming stronger with her allies. There is a lot of danger, action and hard hitting sex scenes – enough to keep you flipping pages quickly. There isn’t any filler characters here, every one has a purpose to propel the story forward. There is not a lot of wasted pages in this book.
Luther and Cyrus are in great form, and Deston is the vampire that the reader falls for. The romance is spot on, and in this addition to the series, you find out more background of the clans and Seraphina’s history. This is the book that ties the first one and the series together. Can’t wait to start the next one.
The first book created a world I was excited to return to with epic forces of darkness, strong and sexy forces of good and some grey areas. The follow up book was not a let down, I was gripped from the first page and the action and twists were thrilling throughout. I love Cyrus and Luthor and I wanted more from them. A deeper look into the vampire world and the houses was fascinating too. I love Serafina, she’s an amazingly strong and powerful leading lady. Her stubbornness and rash moments add to the excitement. Katerina is an epic evil Queen who you really can hate and wish destruction on. Overall the book is really good and worth reading.
Deston believes Seraphina is his true mate and needs to overcome her hatred of him. What I find unique is that he is jealous of her first two vampire lovers and when and if he seduces her, he is not willing to share. I’ve never run across possessiveness in a RH before.
Personal grievance: Deston constantly spouts French words and phrases. I have no clue what they mean. Translation is rarely given and would be appreciated.
Seraphina has a showdown with Viktor. She also acquires a new foe - Katarina - the first Darkfell Queen - who is older than dirt and is much more powerful. Katarina wants Deston and what Katarina wants, Katarina gets.
A wonderful continuation of the steamy, action filled vampire romance read. Talk about steamy, Seraphina is hard at work training, but with that her relationship grows with her Royal guard. I loved how Seraphina’s life unfolds with the danger, heartbreak, and delicious heat level that keeps popping from start to finish. This does end on a cliffhanger that will have you craving for more and with another jaw dropping ending I can’t wait for the next book.
Definitely much better than the first one. The writing flowed better and it was a lot more cohesive. Definitely some heartache. I feel at times Seraphina acts like a child but that's to be expected. She really is one. I know 20 is supposed to be an adult but she definitely hasn't matured yet. However, she faced some hard truths in this book andi believe she'll definitely be bucking up and acting like the woman she was meant to be. I can't wait to see what happens next. A lot happened in this story and I'm excited to see the next steps.
This book was better than the first but all the books so far have spellings and grammatical errors. Like deston is spelled Duston in one sentence. I’m not picky ever about this stuff but it’s consistent through all the books so far. Was there no editing done? Who knows.
I like reverse harems so I will continue to read the series and probably finish it. The FMC is a bit whiney but her character development gets better towards the end of the book. I did feel as through Deston was a bit forced and is problematic. Cyrus is my favorite so far and Luther is Luther.
A good second book in the series! I definitely recommend reading the first book first, I do not think this can be a standalone. I’m very excited about Deston’s story and background. Despite his sordid past, I’m not sure I can believe he is the enemy he portrays. There is passion and tension and such great character development. Almost too much self- sacrificing? I don’t know that I can wait for the conclusion! I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving a free copy
Much better than the first book! I am happy with the character development, especially Deston's story. Much more plot driven and kept my interest easily. I gave the first book 3 stars, but this one gets four. There's a lot more grammar errors in this than I prefer and sometimes it's hard to see which character is speaking, but that could be due to my having the digital copy and the placement of the paragraphs, possibly? Glad to see less feminism and more balance in our ladies and gents.
Terrific second book in the series. There was more character development and great background info on the characters and vampire clans. Seraphina's magic grows as she gains more control over it. Lots of action in the battles against Viktor and Seraphina becomes queen as she defeats him. With a win there is also a loss to her and another more powerful threat. Can't wait for the nest gook. L A McGinnis knows how to grab your attention and want more of this tale.
The intrigue continues. You don't want to put the book down until you see what happens next, and then what happens after that. It's a never ending loop of just one more page and then I'll stop... you won't so don't lie to yourself. Carve out some time because you will be glued to this story! And now for the next book because I need to know what's next. It's addictive I tell you, it is!
Good build up to the end. Got a little slow in places, but that might have been me. Serephina is coming into her power and trying to avoid Viktor. Can she trust those around her? Her relationships with Luthor & Cyrus are changing but what should she do with Destin? Introduction of new characters, something else to keep track of. A few twists that are unexpected. How will Serephina deal with this?
This is the second in the Darkfell Vampire series. For a 300+ page book, this is a quick read. There is action from start to finish. This part of the story tugged at my heartstrings. I could not make up my mind up about Destons loyalities. This confirmed my thoughts. Emilia continues to develop as a vampire, after accepting her status in the clan. I recommend this series if you like vampires, magic, battles and spice.
U know at first I was getting a little bored with the repetition of her day to day not advancing and being frustrated, but very quickly I started to fall in love with Deston as a character! He’d do anything to protect her, even things he wasn’t aware he was able to do because of the soul bond! I am really hoping they can get him back somehow and keep him and still keep the throne and her other two men! Deston deserves better after that evil witch!
I'm SOOOO looking forward to the next book! It's only a month away! I was shocked at how quickly I was hooked into this series! L.A.McGinnis has a talent for weaving her story right into your heart. I'll be looking for more of her works to keep me going!
I enjoyed this book much more than book than Night Marked, solely based on the authors improved character development! Deston was very much brought to life, more so than Cyrus and even Seraphina, and the vampire world that was created here became more solid. I loved the storyline again, and the cover is great!
I personally think the smut is better in this one than in the last one. I inhaled this book at literally every opportunity. The drama! The feelings! Serafina as a character just gets better and better I think, and I love the people she’s surrounding herself with. I like all of them. Have I mentioned that Deston reminds me of Severus Snape in a really good way??
This series is non-stop action, unsure thoughts, insanely bad games, crazy powerful people, intense situations and completely different characters 😉. This story is guaranteed to keep you turning pages for hours 😊. Thanks again L.A., I can't wait to see what happens next in this topsy-turvy story 🤓.
I loved this book and can’t wait to read the next book in the series! I am never disappointed either in anything! They just get better than the first one. I am really anxious to see where this is all leading to and if Seraphina will be able to eliminate her biggest obstacle before she can become the true Queen she wanted to become!
"I will love you, no matter where you go, no matter if you can’t feel it or even know who I am."
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ / 5 Spice: 🌶️🌶️.5 / 5
"Maybe it's time for you to turn over a new leaf, embrace who you really are, become the villain of your own story, instead of the hero... Because that's how you think of yourself, isn't it? As a hero?"
