Save this book for the weekend or a vacation because you will not want to stop reading. Peter R. Hall begins this first book of a trilogy by alternately giving us views of life before the plague and surviving after the plague. In my opinion this method of telling the story enables him to give us important information without having to feed us chapters of less interesting but important information all at once. I think it helps keep the story moving while helping readers come to know the main character and understand life before and after the plague.
Our main character is a high functioning autistic. He is basically a solitary being as he doesn't socialize well. Instead of his Asperger's hindering him, it becomes his strength after the plague hits. This aids him in living the solitary life he feels he needs in order to survive what he knows is going to become a very dangerous world. As can be expected, the worst in humanity comes out.
Our main character fares much better than could have been expected. In some ways his Asperger's became a strength instead of a handicap. His solitary life was his defense against the violence that always occurs after our world falls apart.
Overall this was a page turning story which life was the only thing that kept me from reading it straight through to the end. I came to like the main character and the way he tried to help people while maintaining his distance from them. It was not plastered with profanity or graphic sex, although there are some violence and sexual situations that fit the state of the world at the time. I very much look forward to the rest of the trilogy and finding out the rest of the story. I really loved the final paragraph., it was quite apt. The book ends leaving somewhat of a cliffhanger but if you paid attention to the beginning it is not a big enough one to make you continue to the next book if you have not become totally enthralled with the story. If you do want to continue, the current combined price of all 3 is really reasonable at less than the price of an average book.
I requested and received a free copy of this book. This in no way influenced my opinion which I have voluntarily stated in this review.
I received this book free in exchange for an honest review. I've done 2-3 stars before (other authors) and felt bad, but this book knocks it out of the park. I was so engrossed, I couldn't put it down. The characters were built up nicely and the story just flowed. If you are easily triggered, you might not go here, but it would be a shame because the story makes you think about things. Lots of things relevant in this day and age. I can't wait to start reading the next one and see what happens to Cal.
This is quite a unique story. It is an apocalyptic take told mostly from the perspective of a man with Asperger's. It shows how he handles meetings with good people, bad people and stupid people. There are some very scary situations that he must deal with. There are introductions to a few other characters as well and I look forward to reading about them in future books.
A stunning book about a mother’s love, commitment and strength to survive. Sarah discovered that her son, John has Asperger’s. She does all in her power to bring him up normally. Then the Yellow Death arrives and John has to carry on on his own. This is a novel of strength and determination to survive. With trying to save and protect others that you meet along the way. This is a very well written book and I really enjoyed it and would recommend to all who enjoy this kind of book.
This is well written and entertaining to read. I couldn’t wait to see what would happen next. Peter Hall has made a believable story come to life with his description of the settings and the character development. Can’t wait to see what happens next!
John seemed so much like a real person, such good character development. The progression of the story seemed so realistic it made me nervous. This is one you gotta read!
This is very different from many post-apocalyptic stories being set in the UK with an autistic protagonist. Alternate chapters switch between Cal's life in post-apocalyptic Britain and his childhood before the apocalypse, which made him the person he is. The novel brilliantly shows how qualities that are a disadvantage in our current society can become a superpower in a different world. We see various events forcing Cal on a journey of self-discovery, which might eventually lead him to develop close personal relationships - something which his autism has prevented up to now. Towards the end of the novel a second character—Kim—appears, who promises a new interest going forward into the next novel in the series. At the end of the book, both Cal and Kim are left in precarious situations, so if you don't like cliff hangers, best avoid this novel.
