Ruwen and his friends have five days to spring a comrade from the world’s most secure prison, Legion’s Vault, located in the city of a god that wants him dead. Permanently dead.
Their only way into the city is competing in the yearly Step Championship. Nothing says low profile like combat in front of a hundred thousand spectators.
If remaining anonymous and breaking into a legendary prison didn’t already spell disaster, an old acquaintance appears. One who knows Ruwen’s name and face and can destroy all their plans.
Entering the fifth level of Legion’s Vault seems difficult, but leaving might prove impossible.
Because the path home has a cost and will condemn one of them to certain death.
AFK is the pen name of Ripht, a monk still wandering the Crypt of Dalnir looking for the Lumpy Goo that refuses to drop his Fighting Baton. Some of AFK's best memories happened online, and the Divine Apostasy, a LitRPG series, is his attempt to relive those days in some small part. He hopes you find a piece of yourself in this series and join him on the journey.
This is the shit that really pisses me off with this series. People make their choices and ignore council against their stupid actions, when everything goes wrong, it's somehow the protagonist's fault. This shit has been going on since book one.
I thought that the previous book showed that the author was improving, but no. The protagonist is still a literal carpet. People beat him down and give him shit for the literal actions of others.
I can't take this shit seriously. Now he has someone taking out their frustrations on him because the stupid worm would not listen.
No matter what, I'm giving this book two stars for the pointless drama the author is creating. I thought they stopped this, but I was wrong.
This entire book felt off. The protagonist didn't get to use his cleverness and ability to escape a situation. It felt like everything was focused on the tournament, then the book ended on a cliffhanger.
This one has a much better balance between the wuxia and rpg fantasy aspects. The story goes by fast but very entertaining. Character and plot development is great for the 2 main male characters. The female characters need more attention.
While I really enjoy this universe and it’s characters, and going back is great, there is a lot going on here.. like A LOT. The mixture of tournament and heist all in one book left me feeling like I missed out on the full experience either of these could have had and then there’s even more questing and revealing in the recipe.. so yeah, again, there’s a lot going on. I really do enjoy this universe though and look forward to seeing how things evolve from here.
Another winner. Most likely if you're reading this then you've read the 1st 4 books. If that's the case then know that you won't be disappointed. If for some strange reason you are reading the review to the 5th book in a series that you haven't started then hurry up and read the first four books, you won't be disappointed, other than when you finish this one and have to join me in waiting for the next book to be released.
The importance of this book, clearly, is to establish how Our main character will become enough of a threat to destabilize the power balance of the universe as we know it, which is a difficult place to be for our poor main character.
A lot of the development in this story is our main character growing into becoming… essentially a god. Learning how to use power responsibly and consider the outcomes and ramifications of his actions.
As such, the book has a more contemplative tone than many of the others, and is an interestingly different note than the symphony the other books create.
Depending on the next book, this is either the start of a new melody… or a flop. This book itself is good, but the responsibility of the success of the next book depends on how the author takes it - making it an important shift in the series.
This story takes far too long to start. There's no plot until a third of the way in. I was almost forcing myself to continue until... it gets back to full speed ahead. So, two stars for the start but bumped up to three for the whole thing.
I like the device used to offset how overpowered Ruwen has become. That is, he must hide his full abilities lest the enemy gods, or their minions, notice. This allows an element of risk and therefore tension to exist, raising the emotional stakes.
I'm enjoying watching as the world-building gets ever more detailed, even as its scope expands. This is becoming a true work of originality.
A F Kay Adds another fast read in the series. It is told in a 3rd person limited format with strong RPG elements , and is appropriate for young adults and above.
I went on a review spree of the series and another Book this week and I feel like and I feel like was a bit harsh in some ways to to with this interesting and engaging seris any gaging's series. For me each book ranges between a 3 and 4 star rating. What brings it down often is some some of the RPG elements and were particularly the endings of a of the books being cliff hangers or extremely hooky. Still I do not regret listening to the series and would of course recommend reading it because of the price being fairly cheap while also still having something that is well edited and without too much fluff. The seires had me me laugh out loud a number of times while driving down the road. I likely look crazy but the characters are real and their personalities come out. The Audible addition is voiced by Travis Baldree and he does a great job.
Book 5 Has all the action humor romance intrigue As well as the heart wrenching moments seen in previous books. The is of course one again a hooky cliffhangery end the messes up the pacing as well as have the obligatory muti-page character sheet readout info dump.
Don't get me wrong I enjoyed this series so far but i do think that the books could have been stronger if they stood on their own within the world and went lighter with rpg info dumps. The author made a unique choice in having the series take a short amount of time, with a few time warps that in able training, so far while the power arc was really sharp really quick. The series itself feel more has a single book or 2 that's been chopped up. I've seen the style a lot and it is more a format of this electronic age and the ease in which people can publish online.
This is a series that was interesting and fairly cheap So it makes for an interesting fast read that doesn't hit the pocket book too much. It is of course in the litRPG genre With a lot of RPG as well as the progression cultivation elements seen in other stories.. It does feel like the author put a lot into a short amount of page space. It feels as if The main character cannot turn around without some sort of amazing amazing simple and easy progression, of course many people like this as do I at times. The only real issue that some might have is that the main character does not feel as if he has earned His power as much as being made to have his power of his power. Of course the character is smart and starting out weak makes up a lot but I would liked to have seen the power arc be slower, time span expanded, and perhaps a few subplot given a book or two to feel more solid.
A good continuation of the series but I have to admit it triggered one of my pet peeves so I didn't like it as much. All of the problems that occured in this book were because of stupid choices the group made.
The toxic feminism is still aggravating and greatly lessens my enjoyment of these creative books. Please stop conditioning males to put females on massive pedestals and think they are stupid and girls are so much wiser and totally amazing. This is nonsense. You harm now and future generations of boys and lower their confidence, which is exactly what girls want so males are easily manipulated.. which is what you appear to be, just like most guys these days. Poor simps, please wake up and grow more confidence, your minds are fully manipulated.
We don't need male authors making the situation worse. Confidence for males and especially boys is hard to come by. Everyone tries to sap a males confidence instead of build it up, like we do for girls. Dads these days are weak, TV and movies and books have become extremely feminist and there is nothing left to support boys. Girls have far more of their own empowering books, and boys need male role models/authors that help boost their confidence to become successful in life, and also not easy prey to every female they meet
Predictable chaos, with a twist that just keeps on giving
While some aspects are expected or predictable, there's normally a twist that alters that scenario in a unique manner. It's one of the reasons I love this series. Following Ruwen and his friends is wonderful and incredibly fulfilling. I wondered why certain aspects went the way they did and why logic doesn't always flow, but that's okay. I'm willing to take a chance to wait on the reasoning to be explained later, or at least hopefully anyway.
I have mixed feelings about the séries, while it is funny and reads pretty well, the protagonist makes no sense a lot of the time. For example: he is supposed to stay hidden and increase his power, but he joins a tournament risking everything just for a couple of matches... Realistically, he would have for get displayed some prowess to be believable, but try to avoid attention... In reality he shows off at every turn, makes weird and stupid choices and noone figures anything out... I dunno, seems off
I love the series, really. but just like reducing Nynaeve's hair this might have reduced the WoT by 3 books, Ruwen's most boring, pointless internal monologues and feeling guilty for anything and everything could have reduced this book by at least 200 pages.
some of his internal monologues are so clingy, while almost trusting Izak and doubting Blapy in the same paragraph.
I missed Rami and it seems like we'll miss the hang in the next one as well.
at this point I'm reading the series just for sift.
If you like litrpg, progression fantasy, or cultivation, Divine Apostasy is a must-read. Audacious in scope while detailed in each challenge the characters face, the author blends universe a spanning conspiracies with ample humor and unforgettable characters. Nothing is as sure to let a hot beverage go cold and forgotten on the side table like one more chapter of this series. Superb work that I cannot recommend enough.
You can really tell that A.F. Kay puts a lot of effort into these books. While its not a hard read, it is very enjoyable and you really can grow to love the characters. I do wish there was more focus on The Shattered Sun and Lir, but the main story is still good. I do feel like the tournament part was very rushed and could have been much more interesting. I really enjoyed this book!
Absolutely stunning. Love this story. Each book is like quick sand and there is no escape, because you don’t want to. Cannot say enough good things about this series. If you haven’t read it, you are missing out on one of the masterpieces of the genre.
I have to say, this is one of the best series I have read. The main character grows on you and the relationships he develops as the storyline progresses are funny, endearing, and thought provoking. Truly enjoyed reading this book. If you haven't started the series yet give it a shot, it is really worth your time.
The 5th book in the series just goes on to highlight the authors strength and how he has properly identified it in his story writing skills. The savage seven, hilarious side quests, awesome friendship showcased and easy to follow story just add on to the beauty of overall series. Looking forward to reading the next in the series.
This story of a young man who wanted to be selected as a Mage class, but instead becomes a Worker despite his high intelligence Of course this was done to hide him as he is actually the goddess champion and quickly becomes overpowered to regular folks, but is overwhelming under powered compared to other champions. Great Reading
AFK walks the line of an OP MC that can't use any of his powers. The juxtaposition creates an opening for creative solutions, and AFK lined up entertaining after entertaining scenario in these openings.
Also super happy that AFK has kept the series clean, my daughter loves them too!
The books are more fun when the characters stay together. Disappointed there was no time for fluffy. They should of know those idiots taking center stage was a terrible idea. The stuff with Blampy at the end of the step tournament was hilarious. Maybe their brains are also as black as their livers. Haha
If you saw my review on The Fourth Secret where I talk about how Ruwen is overpowered, well, it gets worse in this book lol. You learn early on in the series that Ruwen has to fight and defeat gods, so I understand, but my word, he is overpowered.
Also, with every book of the series I read, Ruwen does not deserve Sift.
So fantastic of a world and universe. From the characters, too the storyline, and just OMG the FIGHTS! S twisting thrill ride from start to finish. Reading it is to love it.
Really liked this book where MC is finally overpowered compared to most others. Amazing discoveries , fight sequences and locations. Can’t wait for the next one. More please
Took some pages to get back into the characters and plot but then it picks right back up. This seems like a side quest type book but then we realize how it advances the main story.
This entire series just flows so well and is easy to read. The characters are highly relatable and I find myself smiling and laughing at the interactions between Sift and Ruwen. Keep up the good work A. F. Kay
Looking forward to book 6. Book 5 didn't have quite as much blatant character development but I'm loving the mc's group is all maturing w/out what makes them "them" being removed.
Forget the hero, long live Sift. By far the best book in the series, I do hope they author gives a change to the supporting characters in the next book because they deserve a chance to shine.
