A ridiculous knee injury takes me out of the game for the rest of the NHL season. Do I cry? No, because I’m Seamus Byrne. I’m a beast on the ice and I’m not going to let a little knee problem slow me down.
Until my wife decides she wants a divorce. Talk about kicking a man while he’s down.

My silver lining through it all is my killer doc, Nicole Stewart.

Then I do something impulsive that puts her future in jeopardy. Now I’m the one who has to fight for her, and I can’t exactly say it’s a hardship. She’s stubborn and sweet and has a few secrets of her own. But I’m all kinds of wrong for her. I should stay away from her.

Too bad I’m starting to see how a great gal like Nicole could give a guy like me a second shot at true love.

Second Shot is Book 4 in the Minnesota Raiders series following sexy single hockey player dads on and off the ice.

This was a good read. Seamus is injured and Nicole is the team doctor. His wife decides to divorce him and Nicole's mother is forcing her to marry a man she doesn't love. They end up fake dating each other. Of course what started out as fake becomes real by the end.

The fourth book in the series is Second Shot. In this story, we follow older Raiders player Seamus Bryne. The story starts on possibly the worst day of his career. Injured on the ice, his wife has had enough of their contentious relationship and tells him she is filing for divorce and he's now the sole parent for their twins. All while Seamus is sitting in the medical room with the team doctor Nicole Stewart sitting right there. Because of that history and their work to get Seamus back into playing form, both realize that they are more attracted to each other than they thought (when their relationship was just two ships passing). That leads to confusion, awkwardness, and crazy Southern family politics when Nicole's family finds out.

My Take

I thoroughly enjoyed the series. Pippa Green delves into deeper topics (boss vs. employee relationships, single parenthood, interfering parental units, etc.). But, the stories still manage to be fun and have a nice flow. The characters are easy to relate to, even if you're not a super fan of hockey. For a hockey romance series, there is a surprising lack of hockey.

I did have a complaint, and it mostly takes place in Snap Shot. The manufactured drama is a little unbelievable. You have Mitch and Morgan; they are on opposite sides of their drama, and there is a very "easy" solution to the problem that neither of them brings up. I'm not going to spoil it, but it did take me out of the story. The conflict really should have been figured out midway through the story. There is a fine line an author has to flirt with when writing a series. They need to have a new drama for each book. But, the longer the series goes, the harder they have to work to manufacture that drama. I'll be interested to read the next book when it is released.

Another observation I had - and this extends to other stories that I've read - is that family and friends in romance novels are super pushy. Now, I'm familiar with passive-aggression, and I recognize that messed-up family dynamics lead to more drama. But man, sometimes, I want to smack friends and family for not being supportive. I couldn't imagine if I fell in love with a friend of one of my brothers that they would act like that was the worst thing in the world. It's a familiar trope to have a sister fall for their brother's best friend (or a brother fall for a sister's best friend). But, if it is not well written, it can come across as hypocritical - notably, when the story revolves around a younger sister. In this series, you have two different brothers who are opposed to their sisters dating their best friends. He's good enough to be your best friend but not to date your sister. To me, it is irritating (almost as annoying as Grammarly). That may be the feminist in me.

Would I Recommend?

Yes, if you're looking for a sports romance series, I highly recommend the Minnesota Raiders series (there is even a new book dropping on February 22, 2022). Sure, you can read each story on its own but, I don't recommend it. All of the story's build on each other, particularly the prequel and the first three stories.

Overall I give each book 4.5/5 stars. I like the stories but, sometimes the manufactured drama pulls you out of the story.

Dr. Nicole is the Minnesota Raiders Hockey team doctor. She loves the job, for several reasons. The main reason, being she gets away, from her, overbearing mother. Truth. Straight up, her mother has an arranged marriage waiting for her back home. Dr. Nicole is not ever supposed, to be a doctor. Even though her family, indulged her. She is to return home, with her degree, and, become a token, wife.

Her life is about, to change faster than the guys, she helps heal, and, they can skate on ice. On this night, Dr. Nicole’s secret crush steps off, wrong at practice, and injures his knee. Now, this is Seamus, one of the biggest badasses, in the league. The poor man, just can't catch, a break. He is a good guy, a good dad, and a husband, and yet, he ended up with one of the, biggest bitches on the team. There are not many, wives or girlfriends, that like her if, they are smart.

However, Brittney, his wife evidently can outdo herself, her own worst sh!t show. She goes storming into, Doc’s exam space. Not caring, that doc is standing right there if, she even noticed her. She proceeds, to tell him things are over, with them. That it's been over for, a while. She has fallen for, a Canadian hockey player who wants her, not the kids. So, she is leaving, because he is old, and, washed up. She turns around without, care and, leaves. He is not hurt, or, mad for himself, but for his twins, Sampson, and, Savannah.

Doc and, Seamus, have a bonding through this experience. But what seals it, is his overhearing a call from her mother, Amma. She badgers and makes, this no-nonsense doctor, doubt herself. When she goes, to lunch with, Seamus, and they are approached by some puck bunnies, it gets interesting. They want him to sign their breast, but he declines. He explains that he is sorry, but they are disrupting a lunch, with the good doctor. Then they put her down, making her cower. He gets angry, and tells them they are a couple, and he kisses the doc.

Once, Tori, the team owner gets involved, due to the lack of notice, the PR department needs, to spin the story. Because someone caught the kiss, and it was now streaming fast. I enjoyed the story, even like all the characters. Just wished we knew why Brittney did what she did. Also, what about her mom what happens to her?

I felt so bad for Seamus, then things got so much better.

Seamus is the dad fraternal twins. A boy and a girl. He's married to an absolute witch of a woman named Brittney who is an absolute narcissist who likes spending a lot of money on partying and unfortunately drugs. When Seamus bangs up his knee really bad during a game he is automatically taken to the team doctor Nicole. When Nicole is checking out his knee and telling him it could be a career ending injury, Brittney shows up to tell him she wants a divorce and that her new boyfriend, another hockey player from Canada doesn't want her to bring the kids. Then walks out.

Seamus is laying there in shock and in pain. Nicole says she will do anything she can to get him back on the ice.

Nicole cannot believe what Brittney did to Seamus. She is such a witch! Seamus is a sweet man and an incredible father. Plus he's gorgeous and built like a God.

I loved how Seamus came to help Nicole when her mother was coming to town to throw her into marrying a guy from their same elite lifestyle that she and her husband approved of. Nicole left Atlanta and headed for Minnesota when she had just gotten out of school and got the job as the Minnesota Raiders team doctor. Her mom wanted her back home and pushed into a suitable marriage.

I absolutely laughed out loud with some of the stuff Seamus came up with to bring Nicole's mom down a notch or so. And to find out Dr Nicole had no dating experience at all was a hoot when Seamus found out. He was even more protective than ever before.

Such a great story. You need to read to find out what happens to Brittney, and this very new and interesting relationship between these two. Enjoy!

4-stars for Second Shot by Pippa Green

This is another great addition to the Minnesota Raiders series with the sweet, swoonworthy Seamus finally getting rid of his scowling baggage named Brittany so he can finally find his HEA with Nicole. Seamus and Nicole have a packed road ahead but their steamy hot chemistry only adds pleasure on the road to the HEA. While the storyline and plot were great, yet I feel I need to mention that there is editing errors throughout the book from KU that it warranted mention in the review. Personally, I didn't like the ending, it was too adrupt and I felt the ending was flat and there was nothing signifying or closing the loop on their story. Accordingly, I expected to find an epilogue download link at the end of the book but was disappointed there not only wasn't a download link but there wasn't any mention of an epilogue / bonus content either......Pippa Green, no epilogue with such an adrupt end, very disappointing!! Even though I wasn't satisfied fully with the ending I still recommend reading Second Shot! Why? Because sweet & swoonworthy + hot & sexy Seamus = definitely recommend reading......need I say more!
Even though I did receive an advanced review copy of this book, I also purchased the book/read with Kindle Unlimited and am voluntarily leaving my own unsolicited opinion with my voluntary review.

Second Chance for Seamus and Nicole . . .

Seamus Byrne, a professional hockey player, sustains a knee injury that prevents his playing for the rest of the NHL season. His wife took the opportunity to divorce him – and leave their children, Sampson and Savannah, in his care while he is injured. But the good part, if one can find it, is Dr. Nicole Stewart who won’t give up on him. She is determined to see him healed and back in the game.

With Brittney trying to undermine everything, Seamus and Nicole need to fake a relationship. And the best part is that it gives them time together. Will their fake relationship become real? Can they find a HEA together as a family?

This is a good story with likable (as well as awful) characters to keep the reader interested in the outcome. Seamus remained calm through all of his ex-wife’s antagonism, and I loved it. Grab your copy and enjoy their story. Will things resolve into the life they deserve? They have certainly both earned it if it does!

Perfect addition to this series!

I love these stories about the Minnesota Raiders. They're big and burly on the outside, but with the right woman they are filled with love and sensitivity. In this book, Seamus is injured so there's not much hockey and his wife leaves him with two children when he's the most vulnerable. Enter team doctor Nicole who fights for him to rehab and she's everything his ex wife wasn't. They are both from extremely different backgrounds which gave lots of fodder for this story. Between Seamus's ex and Nicole's mother, egad, I would run for the hills! But look at the cover, ladies - he looks like he could crush you with just one hug! I certainly didn't expect such sensitivity coming from him. Yet Pippa Green is able to make the reader feel that. It's a fairly quick journey they take together, but there's no denying their intense chemistry. It's a perfect addition to the series!

The Second Shot is part of a series of hockey romances and features cameos of the previous characters but I think it stands alone well (I haven't read them all). Seamus is a freshly divorced father of two and his ex causes some trouble. Nicole is his team doctor and secret crush.

I liked Seamus as a character but Nicole is harder to identify with. She lets her toxic mother rule her life up to the point that she let her mom arrange her engagement to a not-out gay guy and now she's nearly 30 and has always been celibate. Nicole's mom puts Nicole's education and job down and doesn't like Seamus because a tattooed hockey giant doesn't fit her idea of a good and can't behave nicely. I lost a bit of patience with Nicole, I thought she should have blocked mom''s number years ago.
The writing style is pleasant and editing is good. In some sections there were random changes of tense, from past to present and back again.

Being a pro athlete, an injury will put them in their most venerable spot. While Seamus was facing a season ending injury, his wife felt it was the perfect time to leave him and leave his two kids. Luckily he did have someone on his side wanting to see him get back to where he needs to be, Nicole, the team doctor. Nicole enjoys what she does, unfortunately does not have the support of her mother, who never has nothing nice to say.

Seamus and Nicole get together in hopes to stop the drama going around with his ex, soon realize what they have is more. Great story with the perfect amount of drama, heat and passion.

Seamus & Nicole

Seamus badly hurts his knee during a game and has to go see Dr. Nicole (team doctor) to find out just how bad it is. While there his wife decides that is the perfect time to ask for a divorce. She was moving on with her new boyfriend and he doesn't like kids so he can have them. Dr. Nicole hears all this and can't believe it. Their story starts with a kiss that goes viral and now they are in a fake relationship. But is it really fake? Lots of drama with her southern mama who is a real piece of work. In the end they both follow their hearts.

great couple

Seamus deserved so much better than his ex. And Nicole was perfect to fill that role.

These two had a spark that didn’t start u til after Seamus was single. It’s funny how they had worked for the same team for so long but had never really spent much time together. I love how outsiders see him as a brute but he is so much more. And Nicole is so shy but willing to allow him to bring her out of her shell.

This author has captured my attention with these hockey guys and the love they get to experience. I’ll definitely be reading the rest of the series.

I have read other books by Pippa Grant but this is the first one in this series that I have read. They are all based in the same universe, but can be read individually which is nice. This one was pretty good. It's a bit of a situation with Doctor/Patient and fresh breakup with family drama added in. But there is some fun times and lots of heart and a quick but touching HEA.

A very nice story about two people who think they aren't good snough

When Nicole keeps saying Seamus is 'not good snough for her daughter, he starts to think he isn't. And Nicole never thinks she's good enough for anyone, thanks to her poor escuse of a mother. When all is said and done they are made for each other

Surprise...

Doc Nicole and Semus... I have to admit I love this side of this character that has quietly been in the background of the series! This couple helps each other through an interesting and wild time in their lives.

Good

I enjoyed this book in the series. The other books didn't talk about Seamus much so I didn't know him very well. But he had a great story with Nicole the team doctor.

So far I'm just kind of "meh!" with this series. Both these characters are brow beaten by family members, Seamus by his ex-wife, and Doc Nat by her mother. Even Nat's ex-fiance is disappointing.

Another great quick read in the Minnesota Raiders series. Seamus is a professional hockey player with a knee injury and a single father of two great kids. Going through a nasty divorce isn’t easy, but having the pretty team doctor on your side isn’t a hardship. Nicole is the team doctor and loves what she does…if she can only get her controlling family off her back. This was a great fast paced read with fun banter and crazy chemistry. I’m really enjoying this series and so happy I found It!

Seamus gets injured and his awful wife finally calls it quits. He is quite down when his doctor Nicole helps him up and roots for him to recover so that he can play hockey again. As they work together, they get closer and their chemistry sizzles and burns. They have quite a bit to do through in order to get to their HEA. I am really enjoying this series and am so glad that Seamus is finally finding love!
