My best buddy from high school is marrying my ex and I'm the best man. Talk about awkward. The silver lining is I'm paired for the wedding with the groom's little sister Chloe. She's always been adorable...also, off limits - because I'm the small-town bad boy, now an NHL star, and she's the pastor's daughter.

But weddings make people do crazy things and we end up doing each other. It's our little secret and we're never repeating it.

Except it's hard to keep an accidental pregnancy secret for long- and when she shows up on my doorstep, I know I've messed up her whole life. Is it bad that I'm not upset about this baby?

As the only kid of a single mom, I'm going to do whatever Chloe and the baby need me to do, and if that means a fake relationship to keep her family happy, then I'm all in and my hockey family is on board to help me. If only the lines between fake and real weren't so fucking blurry.

I never wanted a family but I've always wanted Chloe. Now I just have to convince her that this reformed bad boy is good enough for her and our child...

Wayne and Chloe . . .

** 3.5 Stars **
Wayne’s best friend from high school days is getting married… to Wayne’s ex. But he’s okay with that since he is paired with the groom's little sister, Chloe. In the past, she has definitely been off-limits, not only since Wayne is known as the town’s bad boy, now an NHL star, but because Chloe is the pastor’s daughter. You would think that all of these factors together would push them AWAY from each other. But they decided to have a one-night-stand and just keep it their secret. Yes, we know how that works out.

When she turns up on his doorstep soon after, he is ready to provide what she and the baby need from him. I don’t see how they could ever imagine a “fake” relationship will keep her family happy, but he’s okay with it if that’s what she wants. But when fake isn’t enough, will Wayne be able to convince Chloe he wants her in his life, not just for the baby but because he loves her?

A high 3.5 stars! I love me a good accidental pregnancy romance. Very low on the sports part though if that’s what you’re expecting going into this one

I’m a sucker for pregnancy/baby storylines so I skipped ahead to Slip Shot, my first book by Pippa Green.

All my ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️ are for Wayne… What a leading man! A good son, great friend, devoted partner and wonderful future father to be. He was the entire reason I liked this book. I would have given him all 5 stars rating if I could. He stepped up to be a fiancé and baby daddy. And in doing so, he got some awful things thrown at him by Chloe’s family.

I struggled to like Chloe. While Wayne is Mr Positivity I found Chloe to be very negative and it was such a downer. She didn’t think she was pretty. She didn’t think she was good enough for Wayne. She didn’t think she had any talent as an artist. She didn’t think she had any friends. She didn’t think she was going anywhere in life in their small town. I could go on. You couldn’t read a sentence without her hating something. Her words. Literally! Nothing seemed to please her for long. She kept throwing everything Wayne did back at him somehow.
- The fake engagement was her idea but she wouldn’t stop bringing up how things between them weren’t real. No man goes through the hell her family puts him through if he doesn’t care.
- According to Chloe, he was only with her because she was pregnant even though he’s constantly affectionate. Always putting her first. Giving up everything for her. He didn’t have to move her in either. Honestly Wayne could have done the same and assumed she was only with him because she had nowhere else to turn.
- Apparently his bad boys ways, his naughty past but she knows he’s a good man. Has known him for a long time and crushed on him?! He is completely with Chloe from the first moment they are together.
- Anytime he invited friends over she freaks out and blows up about it.

You get the picture…

I wanted to like Chloe more but it really bothered me how badly she let her family treat Wayne. I know in her head their relationship was “fake” but he’s still the father of your child. He’s still the man who is standing by you when no one else is. He’s still the man trying to do everything in his power to make her life easier and better. And she let her family treat him like absolute shit. I almost threw my kindle out the window when she knew her family was buying expensive shit on the menu just knowing they’d make Wayne pay for it and didn’t stop them or make them pay for their half. I would never ever let my family treat my partner so. Wayne is so nice to keep taking the hits and Chloe just keeps letting him. Internally during her POV her thoughts do stick up for Wayne but she never says anything out loud to her family. Ugh! I don’t know why she wanted her family in her life so badly when she knew they were awful people who didn’t even like the person she was. 🤷‍♀️ I couldn’t let those people be around my child.
Don’t even get me started on the Annie seducing Wayne thing. Of course that all becomes all Wayne’s fault. And he takes the hit yet again. Not placing the blame where is belongs on bitch face Annie. Chloe knew Annie was after him, jealous of her ring, their house and his fame… so why was it such a shock she tried to get him back? Chloe should have scratched her eyes out not blamed Wayne. And she doesn’t even immediately tell her brother that his wife is a cheating whore?

The whole Chris debacle was so stupid. Where does he get off thinking he is superior. He married Wayne’s ex for crying out loud. He broke the bro code long before Wayne ever did. I don’t know why he was so pissed Wayne ending up with his sister? If your best friend isn’t good enough for her then who is? He paid for most of his wedding for Christ sake. I honestly thought Chris was a shit friend who took advantage of Wayne’s goodness. Chloe did a little too.

We got no confrontation with Chris at all? I would have preferred that than the parents randomly turning up. No fixing of their friendship? Seriously? I couldn’t believe he walked her down the aisle!! 😡

Half the time I forgot they were having a baby because they didn’t seem all that focused on having a child. It felt more like a plot device as a reader than a a real life scenario. That took me out of the story.

Also hockey… was like non existent which I thought was really weird. I wouldn’t class this as a hockey book at all.

The fifth book in the series is Slip Shot. In this story, we meet Wayne Havel and take a side trip to Bismark, North Dakota. His hometown, where his best friend is marrying his ex-girlfriend. Fun times. The trip home is a chance to see his mom. And get reacquainted with his best friend's little sister, Chloe Whitlock. A little too reacquainted. A few weeks later, a pregnant Chloe shows us on his doorstep. And the two are left to figure out how to navigate having a bun in the oven.

My Take

I thoroughly enjoyed the series. Pippa Green delves into deeper topics (boss vs. employee relationships, single parenthood, interfering parental units, etc.). But, the stories still manage to be fun and have a nice flow. The characters are easy to relate to, even if you're not a super fan of hockey. For a hockey romance series, there is a surprising lack of hockey.

I did have a complaint, and it mostly takes place in Snap Shot. The manufactured drama is a little unbelievable. You have Mitch and Morgan; they are on opposite sides of their drama, and there is a very "easy" solution to the problem that neither of them brings up. I'm not going to spoil it, but it did take me out of the story. The conflict really should have been figured out midway through the story. There is a fine line an author has to flirt with when writing a series. They need to have a new drama for each book. But, the longer the series goes, the harder they have to work to manufacture that drama. I'll be interested to read the next book when it is released.

Another observation I had - and this extends to other stories that I've read - is that family and friends in romance novels are super pushy. Now, I'm familiar with passive-aggression, and I recognize that messed-up family dynamics lead to more drama. But man, sometimes, I want to smack friends and family for not being supportive. I couldn't imagine if I fell in love with a friend of one of my brothers that they would act like that was the worst thing in the world. It's a familiar trope to have a sister fall for their brother's best friend (or a brother fall for a sister's best friend). But, if it is not well written, it can come across as hypocritical - notably, when the story revolves around a younger sister. In this series, you have two different brothers who are opposed to their sisters dating their best friends. He's good enough to be your best friend but not to date your sister. To me, it is irritating (almost as annoying as Grammarly). That may be the feminist in me.

Would I Recommend?

Yes, if you're looking for a sports romance series, I highly recommend the Minnesota Raiders series (there is even a new book dropping on February 22, 2022). Sure, you can read each story on its own but, I don't recommend it. All of the story's build on each other, particularly the prequel and the first three stories.

Overall I give each book 4.5/5 stars. I like the stories but, sometimes the manufactured drama pulls you out of the story.

I will never understand guys. You are my ride-or-die friend, my best friend, and even better my wingman. But, you better not, go near my sister. As is the case, with Chris. The older brother of, Chloe. She has always, had a crush on, Wayne. Ever since they were all, much younger.

Now, here they all are, almost ten years later, and, Wayne is a pro hockey player for, the Minnesota Raiders. He pays for most, if not all, of the wedding, and, he is still being warned by his friend. ‘Hands off,’ while dancing with his sister.

Not to mention, the townspeople are turning their noses, up at him. And, even chose not, to invite, Wayne’s mother, to the reception that, he paid for. WTF! When Chloe, found this out, her claws came out. Hence the nickname, Wayne gave her, Tiger.

Wayne and Chloe stuck like glue at the wedding being that they have a history. Friendship via her brother, she is friends with his mom, and both are outcasts in their hometown. You see the very idea that the pastor's child is a crystal-loving tarot card reader, leaves you on the outs. So, when, Wayne decides to take leave she wants to go.

A little moonlight, by a lake, a little moonshine, and Chloe wants a forbidden somethin’, somethin’. They agree on it being, ‘a off,’ and, they are both, content. Six weeks later and Surprise!!! Both their lives are changed forever.

What a fun story the dynamics of these two are hot. Chloe’s family is a piece of work for sure. Chris takes the cake. Not sure I could trust him again.

I really enjoyed this book, though I was expecting more of a sports (hockey) romance. The male character plays hockey, but other than hanging out with his teammates and their appearances in the book, it has very little hockey focus.

The romance starts after Wayne and Chloe indulge in some super sexy times down at the lake in the back of his rented pickup truck after her brother/his best friend’s wedding. It was supposed to be a one time only event.

When Chloe shows up on his doorstep a month later Wayne is both surprised and happy to see her. The unexpected pregnancy has him step up and be there for her. The reaction from her family is all OTT drama and Wayne is super protective of Chloe.

The story is enjoyable because the male character is fantastic at being there and making Chloe happy and comfortable in his home and life, including his great circle of friends and their wives or girlfriends. The typical relationship drama is still present, but it’s realistic and brings some uncertainty to their smooth sailing towards a HEA.

This was my first book by this author and series, and even though it was the 5th book it was easily read as a standalone. I’m sure those who have read the prior books in the series may have a deeper appreciation for some of the appearances of characters from prior books.

I rated this four and a half, rounding up.
Slip Shot is another addition to the Minnesota Raiders NHL series. There are recurring characters from the other books that I have enjoyed but this would be OK read as a stand-alone. I really like the friendships and camaraderie between the players and their girlfriends and wives so it may be more enjoyable if you read the series.
Chloe and Wayne hook up after Chloe's brother's wedding, and she ends up pregnant. She is scared of telling Wayne but he takes the news really well. Her preachy family doesn't, as they disapprove of both Wayne and pregnancies out of wedock, and things get really tense and stressful. But Chloe gains a new family when she bonds with Wayne's hockey family. There is some conflict between them as Chloe has a hard time believing it could last with Wayne and her.
I really liked most of this story, it was engaging and nicely paced. I liked the main couple and hated her family. The conflict between Wayne and Chloe was largely caused by the curious inability of both of them to say I love you. He's trying to prove her that he loves her but could start by saying the words.

Cute, cute!

I am not normally a fan of accidental pregnancy but since these two already had feelings for each other, and were only not together because of external circumstances, I let it slide. I'm glad I did because the relationship between Wayne and Chloe was natural and their chemistry was awesome! Wayne's reaction was a literal unrealistic but other than that, the plot was enjoyable!

Wayne is Chloe's brother's best friend. Wayne & Chloe reunite when they are both in attendance for her brother's wedding to Wayne's high school sweetheart. Yeah, the real kicker is he PAID for their wedding! Wayne's heart = gold.

Chloe and Wayne have both been crushing HARD on each other since childhood so a little moonlight & moonshine leads to and 'one and done' situation, leading to the baby in question. Afterwards, Wayne goes back to Minnesota, where he is a hockey player for the Raiders, and returns to his normal routine. Until one day, he goes home after a practice and Chloe is there with the news!

The two enter into a 'fake engagement' since Chloe's dad is a pastor. But her family still shuns her and Wayne. But that's okay, because her family is the worst anyways.

A lot of drama goes down, of course, but you will just have to read to see for yourself!

This is book number 5 of the A Minnesota Raiders Novel series and focuses on Wayne and Chloe. Wayne was back in his hometown for his best friends wedding to his ex. He had never truly fit in with the town and left as soon as he could and rarely came back. He had had feelings for Chloe since they were kids but didn't think he was good enough for her due to his perceived reputation. It didn't help that Chloe was the town pastors daughter and came from an incredibly judgmental family. Wayne and Chloe ended up having a one night stand at the wedding and what was supposed to be a one time secret experience turns into so much more when Chloe ends up pregnant. They have to deal with so much mess from Chloe's family and outside influence but they work through it and came out on the other side stronger than ever. They had to deal with quite a few speed bumps but thankfully those speed bumps lead to them getting a great HEA.

4.5-stars for Slip Shot

This was actually one of my favorite books in the series. It's a brother's best friend romance with steam and a sexy, broody ice hockey player who's all in with his best friend's sister......that is once she becomes pregnant after their one night stand and if he can prove he's not all in just because of the baby. But these two have some hot chemistry and an amazing connection, but can they get to a HEA? Most certainly recommend Slip Shot by Pippa Green.
Even though I did receive an advanced review copy of this book, I also purchased the book / read it with Kindle Unlimited and am voluntarily leaving my own unsolicited opinion with my voluntary review.

This is a best friend's sister story with the twist of a surprise pregnancy. Wayne and Chloe meet at her brother/ his best friend's wedding and spent the night by the lake enjoying each other's company. A month later when she shows up at his door step, he has mixed feelings.

Oh, there is drama from her family as they look down on her being pregnant outside of wedlock. Although Wayne is willing to step up, Chloe is hesitant on his true intensions. This is a great story from start to finish. It well written as you can feel the struggle of the characters as the fight their feeling for each other.

Wayne & Chloe

Loved these two together. They both had a high school crush on each other but waited years to be together. It was at her brothers wedding who was marrying Waynes HS girlfriend. They thought it would be a one night stand but a couple of months later she is on his doorstep pregnant. He stepped up because he actually wanted to make it work but she was very insecure about the relationship. I took a star off because no matter what he said and did she didn't believe it was real for him. Otherwise a great story.

it’s a…

Who doesn’t love a surprise pregnancy? I’m a sucker for this trope and this book did it justice.

Wayne isn’t a character we have seen a lot of in other books so we got to learn a lot about him. I love how all these hockey guys are giant grumpy teddy bears. Chloe is such a free spirit and she and Wayne just work well together. Their ups and downs were exactly what you would expect with this trope and the author did an amazing job bringing them back together.

I can’t wait to learn more about this world she has created.

Wayne always had a thing for Chloe yet never went there with her because she was his best friend's sister. At her brother's wedding, they end up hooking up. Thinking it was one and done and that he would never see her again, he's surprised to find her on his doorstep a few weeks later telling him she's pregnant. He wants to be the one to give her everything and not just because she's pregnant with his child. He just needs to get her to believe that. My favorite so far of the series.

I couldn't put this book down.

I totally feel in love with Chloe and Wayne's unknown love for each other. There is so many feelings in this book. There was sadness, frustration, anger, love, confusion and hurt. But they figured out that they really did love each other in the end.

This is definitely one of those books you feel you need to have more.

Fun story between the sister and brother's best friend. The two meet at the wedding and get together the one time, in which she ends up pregnant.
Good story, would have liked a bit more chemistry between the two. It seemed like the two probably wouldn't have got together again if she hadn't turned out to be pregnant

another great book in this series

I’m totally in love with this series, each book delves deeper into this Ice Hockey team and their families. There’s nothing better than seeing a huge hot AF ice hockey player turn into a complete teddy bear.
I really enjoyed this storyline, it’s got some great twists which kept me fully intrigued - I didn’t put it down until the very last word. It was perfect!

Slip Shot (A Minnesota Raiders Novel) by Pippa Green. I enjoy a good hockey romance and this one was just the right pace and setting for my likes. Wayne was the local bad boy but now is an NHL star. Chloe is not only the little sister of Wayne’s best friend but also the preacher’s daughter. Those two things used to mean she was off-limits, but after one night of fun together that has Chloe showing up pregnant on his doorstep awhile later, a fake relationship with real feelings means a number of complications for Wayne and Chloe.

Wayne surprised me! Pippa has spun this series showing new sides to all the characters! Wayne really showed his sweet side as he goes all in to woo Chloe! All the crazy obstacles thrown at them can't keep them apart! I can't wait to watch this group grow again!
