I almost asked myself, why isn’t everyone an influencer? But I already knew the answer to that: Because being an influencer is hard.

Everyone is an "Influencer" nowadays but are they really? You look on their feed and think "I can do this!" but can you? Honestly, it is exhausting how many "influencers" we have out there trying to make it "big". In Influencer Brittany Hennessy gives us play by play look into the world of influencers and what you can do to step your game up. While she offers practical tips most were geared towards people with 25,000 + followers or if you are an Influencer in the Beauty/Fashion space.

With that said, I still learn a few things that I can implement especially as it concerns Google Search and having a succinct bio with a contact information. It is clear Brittany Hennessy knows what she speaks of, so I would encourage you to pick this up if you are contemplating becoming another Influencer.

4.5 Easy to read, easy directions and written in understandable terms. Woot Woot ! becoming an influencer is a dream that I and many others have, getting there is not a natural thing. This is a new world and Ms. Hennessy walks us through it gently explaining each step with clear detailing. The relationships building, the contacts, the followers, all of it. I think any vlogger, blogger, online seller, online reviewer, social networker, would find great help between these covers. The book is well organized for quick reference too. Thank you NetGalley and the publishers for a copy to review.

Although the book focuses a lot on digital influencers in the beauty, fashion and style industries, it shares valuable insights on how to navigate the brand development and business management hurdles of being an online personality (or just an everyday social media user). With the sort of experience she has had, Brittany certainly knows what she's talking about and I give her credit for taking the initiative to share that knowledge with anyone willing to read about it.

If you're looking to be better at creating an audience and making money via your digital profiles, then give this book a quick read.

I read in English but this review is in Bahasa Indonesia

A content creator has to make videos, take photos, and create posts that make people want to trust her and see more.

Mulai dari Building Your Community, Packaging Your Brand, Monetizing Your Influence, hingga terakhir adalah Planning Your Future.

Networking is key. Whether you're building your community, packaging your brand, monetizing your influence, or planning through your future, networking is the common thread that runs through all stages of influence.

I saw the book Influencer, on a fellow book blogger's website. The review was so good that you could say I was 'influenced," by the blogger to purchase it! I am not a social media "influencer" in the sense that Hennessey is writing about; however, I am a book blogger and indie author. As a writer, I know just how important it is to take control of one's social media image. Although Hennesy's book is targeted toward lifestyle, fashion, parenting, travel, and beauty bloggers, she had lots of great information in here that would apply to anyone whose career requires them to get noticed. With a little imagination, you could take Hennesy's tips and apply them to any form of content creation, from writing to vlogging. Hennessey's book could also be useful for nonprofits and other organizations who are trying to figure out ways to extend their social media reach.

I found Influencer, to be completely fascinating and I read it in a single day. Hennessey focuses most of her attention on the use of Instagram but her tips could be applied to other social media platforms. I was grateful for the emphasis on Instagram because it is a platform about which I want to learn more. I was fascinated by her description of what goes into the creation of all those beautiful images on Instagram. For example, I had no idea that many people hire a personal photographer or someone to edit their photos (I'm just lucky if I can get my hubby to hold the camera long enough to snap a quick pic of my Chihuahua and I!).

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning more about social media. Influencer, is honest, succinct, informative, and entertaining.

I was hoping for a sober, researched take on this burgeoning industry. Instead this appears to be written by a person unwilling to step outside her role hiring from a specific group of female beauty influencers to work on partnerships with her specific publisher for her specific brand partners.

I'm shocked the publisher didn't push her to do even a little bit of research outside her sphere.

Chapters are full of her advice for aspiring influencers which often boil down to her pet peeves and how to avoid them. Don't make her hunt to find links to your social media, she's too busy. Well, okay, sure. That's probably good advice, but tips like this feel like she was on deadline and just dictated a bunch of random thoughts to an intern over a vodka soda after a long week at Hearst. "Oh and, uh, make sure you have a blog. Brands like blogs."

I didn't finish this book. I'm not sure why anyone would unless they are hoping to work with this specific woman on her specific projects. All I learned from reading this is that this is still a young industry where apparently a millennial with enough bluster can be in charge of seven-figure influencer budgets. I'll wait for a real journalist to tackle this topic.

I think the rating that I gave this book really depends on my personal past experience. I have been a blogger since 2018 and many of the tips were familiar or just assured my existing knowledge. I also studied law for an academic year and skipped that part, because I know the basics already. Also, some things do not apply to me in my country in terms of the law.

Still, I expected the book to teach me more how to increase my following through my personal brand, but it was more about sales to a brand and basic respectful behaviour towards others. The "increasing your following" tips were a cliche for me: be authentic, post regularly etc. My main hope was to use this book to spread the word about sustainability to a bigger audience, but I did not feel like the tips necessarily helped.

What was really useful about this book, were the tips on: (1) how to calculate the price of your posts, (2) what a brand looks for in an influencer's posts, (3) why a media kit one-pager is important. My other hope is to make money doing what I am passionate about and this was definitely helpful.

This book is definitely great for a complete beginner, though, and will give you a great start!

This book wasn’t what I wanted. This is literally about being a real influencer. Like an influencer that gets hired to link arms with different brands. Was hoping to still take some nuggets away from this but didn’t. It just wasn’t what I was looking for but would be great for people who want to be this kind of influencer. I didn’t finish the last 3 chapters since it’s not worth my time.

Easy reading. Good content and general tips for aspiring influencers, not too deep in any specific area. The tips and stories in the book also fits entrepreneurs looking for ways to excel in the age of Influencers.

This book is very factual and objectively helpful. What it lacked for me is motivation and encouragement.

Instead of here is what a brand is looking for and how you can achieve it. I read it as, if you are not perfect at xyz you've already failed. It also makes it seem so easy to climb the ranks with a little hard work.

There are also a few points I disagree with, but it's hard as a microinfluencer to argue with an industry professional on the other side. Such as, you must have a blog. Aren't blogs less viewed now than YT or IG unless you already have one? Never pick favourites or talk about shitty products. A brand is going to give me the cold shoulder if I love a lip product from a competitor? Or if I strongly dislike one product from their entire line? Do more than you're paid for. Doesnt that defeat the purpose? Of course brands like when you over deliver and knock it out of the park. But it shouldnt be an unspoken rule that you're paid for 1 post but they'd hire you again if you post 3.

Many of the big name success stories highlighted in this book are people I have unfollowed years ago. While their success is clear in their numbers, I dont find them to be personable, and I hate that every other post is a random sponsorship. Their feeds are beautiful, but I never bought a product from their recommendation or promotion. The influencers I follow, who in my opinion have true influence (over me at least) are people I can connect with regardless of how many IG followers they have. If someone I like and trust recommends a product to me, I'm more likely to buy it.

I learned a lot from this book and am glad I read it. I learned that brands are too fickle. I learned that I am not cut out to be a perfectly noncontroversial influencer. I have learned that because of that, I will automatically hit a capped ceiling - and that is incredibly disappointing.

As a book blogger, vlogger and author, I was interested to see what Influencer had to offer in terms of advice on building my platform. Although this book is aimed more at those looking to broker partnerships with brands, it still has some useful advice and ideas on increasing followers and interactions, and getting your voice heard over the noise that is social media. I closed the book with a few new ideas on how to present content on my various channels, and between Hennessy's tips and comments in guest interviews, Influencer gives the reader a lot to ponder and implement before setting off on the journey to become an influencer.

I received this book as a free eBook ARC via NetGalley.

I started this book because I wanted to up my social media marketing game at work, and while early chapters had some solid advice, my biggest takeaway was for my personal social media platforms.
The ideas are very accessible and worked for various stages with a heavier emphasis on steps to take once you have an influencer level of followers. I especially appreciated the sections on how different types of content can work together.
5 stars because it successfully made me want to start a YouTube vlog. lol.

3.5 stars rounded up. In this quick, somewhat-dated-in-2024 (book published in 2018) read, Brittany Hennessey, an influencer-turned-influencer-whisperer (per her current Insta profile), gives advice to wannabe influencers who are looking to expand their following, land brand deals, and earn enough from influencing to make a living. At the time of writing this book, Hennessey was director of influencer talent at Hearst Digital Media, where much of her job involved discovering up-and-coming influencers, booking influencers for various campaigns, and dealing with contract negotiation from the client end. In this book, she gives advice on which platforms to use (this is likely very outdated in 2024), how often and what type of content to post, how to determine fair working rates (again, likely dated since we've experienced massive inflation since 2018), how to negotiate with brands, how to find representation, etc. She also includes various interviews with influencers she admires.

This book is largely targeted at women who seek conventional influencing careers promoting beauty, fashion, travel, and lifestyle content. For that audience, this is probably still a useful read in 2024. While Hennessey does acknowledge at the beginning of the book that there are many different types of influencers (naming various categories including those outside of the traditional beauty/fashion/travel/lifestyle space), there unfortunately isn't a lot of content devoted to those other types of influencers whose goals probably don't include doing sponsored brand posts, doing photoshoots showcasing themselves, and striving toward quitting their jobs to be full-time influencers. I feel like cancel culture is also a bigger deal in 2024 than in the headier days of 2018 (though social media continues to balloon), so there isn't really much advice targeted toward navigating tricky situations where saying something and not saying something in response to some galvanizing event can equally get you into trouble.

My statistics:
Book 153 for 2024
Book 1756 cumulatively

Influencer, by Brittany Hennessy, is an informative nonfiction designed to clearly describe the process behind social media success, and how anyone can become a successful entrepreneur. Some of the things covered include, where to begin, how to earn money, and where you might find lasting success. Reading this book became more than just an enjoyable experience, when I realized just how complex the things the author was explaining in simple terms. According to the book, social media success as a prominent influencer can be broken down into 4 simple steps. Not only did this mean that I was immediately hooked, but I also was enjoying the authenticity and realism of all of its content. Now, this book is primarily intended to be read by a female audience, meaning its lack of inclusiveness may lead to negative feedback, or lack of proper appraisal. But, in its defense, not only did the book specifically state that it was meant for anyone, and not just ladies, but it also takes the time to explain terms in a very inclusive, and understandable way. I rate this book a five out of five, because of excellent writing, and an excellent sense of humor and enjoyment.

I really liked this book! I do not want to be an influencer, but it is great for a few reasons! First, I used it for research for a school report I needed to complete in a college communications course. Second, it helps you to get a behind the scenes and the work that goes into being an influencer, and helps you to see influencers (if they take the advice of the author) of hardworking individuals, and not just people who want to talk about an amaaazing product they just used. Lastly, it helps you to develop your own social media, whether you want to be a fashion influencer, or if you are trying to market your own product and influence others to buy it, or if you just want a well put together social media feed, because like it or not, what you present on the internet communicates something about you, good, bad and ugly. A good read!

Quick, easy read written from the perspective of a casting associate as to the qualities brands look for when scouting for influencers. The last couple of chapters are clear and concise advice that is invaluable for every influencer, brand, manager, etc. That said, the first half of the book is wildly unnecessary if you have ever made an account on behalf of a brand or a business and/or have a background in marketing. While it is heavy on the great marketing advice, the tone gets a bit petty and self serving with her “don’t be that girl” stories that are meant to teach lessons, but come off as ranting that negates the “just be nice” point that she so often reiterates throughout the book.

If you are interested in becoming Instagram famous, give this a read! It was published in 2018, but it is still very relevant today. I have been creating content full-time since 2015, and there are MANY gems inside these pages. However, it is focused heavily on Instagram. I receive most of my website traffic from Pinterest and have over 1,000 blog posts so blogging and SEO are my top priorities over Instagram. I recommend this to new influencers focused on Instagram or those curious about the industry. The writing is concise and informative but still interesting. It takes a topic that can be boring and jazzes it up with interviews and insider tips.

I read this book to help my husband gain a little more insight on engagement for social media. He recently launched a new website and has been working toward new content. I thought this book would have some good strategies or tips for him, he’s not a big reader so I thought I’d take one for the team and see what I could learn and share with him.

This book provides some tips and strategies but is a little repetitive. I would still say it’s worth the read if you’re wanting to learn more about the social media world.

I'm gonna go ahead and give this 5 stars in true Robert Ebert fashion. This isn't War & Peace 5 stars, it's a this-book-does-exactly-what-it-promises-to-do (and then some) 5 stars. And that's a rarity in bookdom. Some books give the idea away in the first chapter, making the rest of it just repetitive filler. Influencer has actionable tips all the way through. My 72 highlights and notes are a testament to that. Highly recommended.

I haven’t seen many books like this available before and was so excited to see it on the shelf at Barnes & Noble as I’m now seriously trying to start my blog & YouTube channel.

This was such a helpful, inspiring and interesting read! While it gave a great overview of information, I do feel it lacked a bit of in-depth info and could have explained certain things in more detail. Overall I’m very thankful to have found this book and have gained new knowledge from it!

This was a waste of my money. There is nothing in here for the people that actually need information about growing their personal brand and creating an online presence.

There is a lot of information for people that already have a large following and want to make it even larger - but even that infornation is just common sense.

This book was obviously artificially hyped.
