Always a Sinner

Rate this book
The road to happily ever after is a bumpy one for Angel and his cop.

Gabe Ashby has given up much for love but harbors no regrets. On the first night of moving into his new home with his lover, Angel, the men couldn’t be more in love. Until a chance discovery puts a damper on their bliss.

In the middle of the night, Angel opens a drawer, intent on waking his lover with pleasure. What he finds instead throws his faith in Gabe off track and threatens the new life they’d hoped to create.

Please note: The events in Always a Sinner take place after Angel appears in the Poconos and before the epilogue of Love the Sinner. As such, Always A Sinner is NOT a standalone. It is strongly advised that you read LTS first. You will be lost otherwise. Contains scenes of violence, some angst, and as always, more heat than you can handle. HEA guaranteed.

Always in love with the written word, Avril finally decided to do the writing in August of ’09 and never looked back. Spicy love scenes, delicious heroes, and wicked women burn up the pages of Avril’s stories, but there’ll always be a happy ending; Av remains a believer of love in all its forms.

The events of this short story take place after Gabe and Angelo (now Rafe) move in their dream house in North Carolina and before the epilogue of Love the Sinner.

“We can leave our marks, physical proof of how hard we fight, how hard we love, but nothing changes for us. We love hard. And we’re fucking good at it.”

It’s about mistakes, forgiveness, and everything between. It highlights two serious arguments between Gabe and Rafe.

“Love isn’t enough, not if you can turn tail and run so quickly. So easily. Our love maybe it’s not what we thought it to be.”

They make mistakes, throw tantrums, and handle problems in an immature way. Especially Gabe. I hated his behavior and how much pain he caused to Rafe. His mistake seems irreparable.
“You made promises to me, they’re now broken. You promised a future, that’s now in doubt. You broke us,” Angel’s voice trembled, “and I don’t know if we can still be fixed, if we can still work.”

Reading about two sweet characters making stupid things and jeopardizing their relationship is not my favorite thing, but it is what it is. They make it up, of course, but it is not easy.
He’d always known they’d end up where they were, in each other’s arms. It simply took some time, took some pain and anger, but they eventually found where they were supposed to be.

All in all, both Gabe and Rafe need to improve their relationship skills, but they are still smokin' hot together. ;)

My favorite quotes.

MM Romance
Ex cop/Ex Gang Leader Angst Fest
2.5 stars ⭐️

After finishing and hating Love The Sinner, I somehow thought picking up Gabe & Rafe’s (formerly Angelo) follow up story was a good idea. 🤣🤣 I lost too many brain cells reading Love The Sinner and can’t be held accountable for my actions. 😂😂 The funny thing is I liked this story way more than their actual book and it had what I was looking for with all the pining, angst and actual relationship stuff happening. What in the actual fuck?

This takes place after Rafe (Angelo) gets out of prison but before the epilogue of the main book. These two are now living in North Carolina in the house Rafe had built for them while in jail and they are having trouble adjusting to the future. Rafe finds some letters Gabe had written but never sent to him while in prison and he can’t handle their words so cue epic fight one. Honestly I didn’t really understand why Rafe was pissed because it was mostly Gabe falling apart in the letters proclaiming his undying love blah blah.

It’s all very dramatic as Gabe is like “You’re my angel, I’ve been in love with you since we first met, you’re forever mine” cue make up sex but then Rafe’s mother mentions babies and Gabe does a 180*, freaks out, won’t talk to “his angel” and hightails it back home to stay with his brother. 3 weeks go by, Rafe is beside himself with grief, Gabe reappears and they have the angstiest fight ever! Drama drama drama. Rafe says “how can I trust you after what you’ve done? We must not be soulmates! Alas!” Tears galore, Rafe attempts to leave and crashes his motorcycle. The horror 😱😱

And all this was HEAPS better than book one. I actually felt kind of sad for them at times despite still thinking these two are the dumbest, saddest 30+ men on earth. These two were a cop and gang leader??? 🤣🤣

Gabe, Gabe, Gabe. . . *shaking head*

This is pure angst and drama. Tears galore. Raw, emotional, somewhat crazy (drawing guns, punching, drinking). And it all could've been avoided had the jackass just opened his mouth and talked . Sheesh.

But what the hell, I enjoyed it!!

This was a short quick read that was full of emotions. Gabe Ashby and Rafe Soto aka Angelo Pagan move into their new house in North Carolina where they start their new life together. When Rafe finds letters that Gabe wrote to him while he was in prison but he never sent them. I found this book to be very emotional I loved reading this series and I know that these two have been through but Rafe didn't have any reason to get jealous after how he sent Gabe a Dear John letter. I also liked that Rafe proposed marriage. This short quick story was a good one.

This short is as sappy, and the sex as heterofied as in the previous book, with the added "plus" of the MCs taking turns pulling guns on each other.

These characters didn't come across as loving and tender and sexy. They came across as abusive, obsessive, and unhinged.

Disturbing.

This is a novella about Gabe and Angel. It takes place right after Angel gets out of jail but before the wedding.

It takes a look into the time when Angelo was gone and Gabe was feeling torn apart, lonely and missing his man. It as dealing with the feelings that Angelo caused to Gabe when he chose to not include him in his decision that cause both our guys to bleed out then and now.

This would have worked better for me if this was the book not an addition after the fact. I still have a problem with the insta-love but reading this after, I melted at their story.

These two are so over the top.

A quick little story that takes place within their story.
Here I thought I was getting 59 pages of hot sexy loving, when I got 59 pages of pure angst. Brooklyn Sinner style.

I swear if I hadn't read their book, I would totally call these two crazy and unhinged.
Angel and Gabe have a very raw love.

2.5 stars. This was even worse than the first when it comes to angst. It was shorter but the angst again was too much. I did like how they started talking about this, albeit because they were forced into a make or break situation. Not a bad series, I guess, but not the series for me.

Loved this short. So emotionally gut-wrenching and jammed full of every feeling under the sun. But, very necessary to completely understand our boys.

There are no words. I have never had a short sequel fracture me and put me back together. The emotion and events were so well written, words do not do it justice.

Loaded with hot encounters, angsty separations/make-ups, tearful declarations and so much more in these few short pages. Starts a bit slow but becomes emotionally tense quickly and then it's tears and heartbreak before our boys can find their balance once again. A great addition to book #1.

Synopsis:

Gabe Ashby has given up much for love, but harbors no regrets. Moving in to a new home with his lover, Rafe Soto, the men couldn’t be more in love. Until a chance discovery puts a damper on their bliss.

In the middle of the night, Rafe Soto opens a drawer in hopes of waking his lover with pleasure. What he finds instead throws his faith in Gabe off track and threatens the new life they’ve begun to create. It appears that before the two men have their HEA, there’s much more fighting to be done.

My Thoughts:

I really liked this free read available on Avril's website. It was drama and pain and love and forgiveness and forever. I fell in love with Angelo and Gabe in Love the Sinner and I still love them. This is definitely a favorite series for me. This novella takes place after Angelo meets Gabe in the Poconos and they have moved in together in NC. It was a nice look at what happened between them before the epilogue of Love the Sinner.

I can't believe how much Gabe freaked and hurt Angel so badly. Not something I ever expected from him. He did a good job of groveling, though. Which he so needed to do. One of the things I've always loved about Angelo is that he is so open with his emotions with Gabe. He doesn't hide shit. He puts it out there and that man is afraid to beg. Love that. I love that Gabe says what's on his mind when he finally gets it out there. He doesn't hold back. I adore these two together.

I would loooooovvvvvveeeee to actually see the two of them together with the kids they plan to have. I know they show up in some of the later books in the series and I'd love to see them as fathers. It'd be beautiful.

Good Lord, I can't get enough of these two! Gabe and Angelo/Rafe are both such alpha males, things can get pretty intense with them. And I love every freaking second of it!

He jerked his head up, meeting Angel’s shining eyes in the dark. “I’m going to leave you like that, with your cock hard and your ass needy,” he spoke softly, clearly, turning himself on in the process. “So you know exactly who owns it. Who owns you.”

This 59 page story delivers the dildo promised in Love the Sinner. Angelo is so hot here, with his sexy as fuck tattoos and his predatory gangster gaze.
These boys do drama right, fist fights, guns, man tears, all so good.

I LOVE a good fight scene (yelling/screaming/arguing/begging/pleading) between a couple. But when it starts to delve into serious Domestic violence, then it becomes too much for me.

This was emotional and my heart broke for Angelo. The amount of times I wanted to punch Gabe in his stupid selfish face were countless. Angelo is an Angel and it’s clear that while Gabe calls Angelo his Angel, Gabe is the selfish devil always leaving Angelo when he needs him most.

I’m glad they made up and found their HEA. This should he read right after To Love A Sinner. It’s essentially a follow up novella epilogue. You wouldn’t understand this book unless you’ve read the prior book that introduces the couple.

I’m so hooked. Avril Ashton is an amazing author and she’s great at world building. I love the way she writes her characters to authentically and with such vulnerability. Her characters are so beautiful and have the best depth.

ok, a lot of short stories practically exist for the readers to have some "sex snippet". this one was so full of angst i really cried. and that is what i love about the books. if they make me feel some emotions. this book definitely did.
i think... in other books i would be thinking "abuse and WTF, why the hell they pointing guns at each other? are they mental?" but here... it really works. guns are the part of their lives. they are both so familiar with them, i was like: "really? fists flying, guns here and there, where the hell are the characters i love?" ...and then i finally get it. it's who they are. this is not a fanfiction version of cop x gangster story. their love is intense, so are their arguments. and i love it. i especially love them together. seeing how they try to communicate at the end, because both of them know if they want to continue their relationship, something has to be done.

I am not opposed to drama. I am just opposed to unnecessary drama.

I get the chapter with the letters, even though Angelo is way out of line on this one. But the second part? That bordered on some mental disorder for both MC's and Liliana part. Kids? With Angel Pagan? Move to a different planet first, people.

I could understand Gabe if his reasoning was "Look at us, we still carry guns on our persons every day, we pull them out on each other on a whim, we are not too far away from your previous life acquaintances and danger it presents. WHAT kids?"

But - no. The only reasoning Gabe had was "I have no words to describe my feelings". And then he runs away with no word for almost a month....

To say WTF is to put it mildly.

3 stars for the part with the letters
1 star for the toddler hissy fit and for running away.

A shortie about Angelo and Gabe. What to say..I actually kinda liked it. There were some pretty touching moments, and tearjerking moments too.. Loved Gabe's letters. But I absolutely didn't like how the guys treated each bump on their way as the end of the world. Their reactions were way too dramatic, and it irritated me. I wanted to shake both up and tell them to man up and mature a bit. Gun pulling, really?

But overall, it was good.

p.s. I'll definitely read Kane's book!

Set right at the end of Love the Sinner but before the epilogue, Rafe and Gabe are just moving into their newly built house together and think they've finally arrived at their HEA, but there are still some obstacles to overcome. The pile of unsent letters Gabe wrote during Rafe's stint in prison makes a reappearance, Liliana asks a question that opens a huge can of worms, Gabe is being an idiot and Rafe a huge drama queen throwing over the top tantrums for a variety of flimsy reasons. Sooo much emotional rollercoaster madness. I love these guys, but this was just too much in places.

4.5 stars--I love Gabe and Rafe and was thrilled to find this short story that fits in between the ending of Love the Sinner and its epilogue. I can't believe how angst-filled this read was. I could have smacked Gabe upside his head--3+ weeks--that's just wrong!

Along with the angst, there was, as usual in this series, a lot of steam. This story's HEA takes you beyond their Love the Sinner epilogue, and that was a real treat.

Don't miss this opportunity to spend more time with Gabe and Angel!

This is so hot, so emotional, so perfect. These two beautiful, flawed creatures never do anything the easy way. How ever they do it, they do it hard and hot.
