The Cowboy's Convenient Marriage

Rate this book
*Previously titled Cowboys Don't Have a Marriage of Convenience*

It was supposed to be simple.

Marry the tall Texan. Her children get a father. They save the ranch.

A business transaction, nothing more. She definitely wasn’t going to fall in love. After her husband ran off with her little sister, she was no longer susceptible to cowboy charm.

Except, the North Dakota girl had never met a Texas cowboy.

He married her for the ranch.

A former champion bull rider needs a spread to call home, even if it is in North Dakota.

Even if it comes with four little kids.

And a big, black, slobbering dog.

Especially if it comes with a woman with enough sweetness and enough toughness to rope his heart and heal it.

The cowboy’s not afraid of anything…except losing his heart again.

So, this was… interesting?!?!

Um, a strange fairytale with an unexplained billion dollar gift for a very downtrodden heroine.

I have no idea how I stumbled into this or how to rate this one, it’s sweet, it’s “clean” and it is somewhat faith based.

[BOOK 5 OF THE SWEET WATER RANCH SERIES: FORMERLY TITLED "COWBOYS DON'T HAVE A MARRIAGE OF CONVENIENCE"; NOW TITLED "THE COWBOY'S CONVENIENT MARRIAGE"]

(4.5 stars) - Wanted: A Texas Cowboy to save the day!

Elaine needs a hero willing to marry her with her 4 kids to save her ranch. Rem is that guy. They've both been disappointed by broken promises, but have finally found a way to succeed together. Until another unexpected broken promise calls everything into question. Their story is really sweet, heartwarming & heartbreaking by turns. The ending is so uplifting This is now one of my favorites in the series

*Clean romance level: sweet kisses, nothing graphic

So fun! A little bit of everything in this story: some humour, some heartache, definitely some sweet romance. It is definitely best to read the stories in order as it helps to understand some of the characters in the story and also the backstory of each one. Readers are at a slight disadvantage if they haven’t read the previous books, or at the very least, the original story, but it shouldn’t stop interested readers from reading any of the books in the series.
This is Elaine and Rem’s story.
A great book and definitely worth the read. I recommend it!

Honestly I was pretty disappointed in this book. There were typos and edits that had not been erased throughout the book. It also did not flow really well. The story was cute but the details were so unrealistic it was hard to get in the story.

A New Take on an Old Trope

The fifth book in Jessie Gussman’s excellent Sweet Water Ranch series throws a wrench into the well-known “fake marriage turns real” trope (premise of a romance or rom-com). It could be a flop, but the author—one of my favorites—inserts just enough twists to keep the reader (me) guessing how it’s going to be resolved.
Remington “Rem” Martinez has escaped a bad situation in his native Texas to find a wife. The first tweak is that neither of the two parties wants to get fake-married…Ford Hanson, hero of The Cowboy’s Beauty, plays matchmaker and talks up Elaine Anderson‘s charms to Rem while warning him that she’s a recent divorcee (not by choice) with four small children and a rickety house on an ancient ranch. Rem loves a challenge—hence his championship in bull riding—and what could be more challenging than marrying a single mom running a decrepit ranch by herself in North Dakota?
Elaine, who’s received one of the “get married, stay in North Dakota, inherit a billion dollars“ letters from the eccentric billionaire who owned the Sweet Water Ranch, isn’t certain she can trust any man to stay with her after her ex-husband married her younger sister, but she needs the money to restore her ranch and consents to Ford’s recommendation to marry a man she’s never met, from a state she’s never visited, for the sake of her children and her ranch, which has fallen into disrepair since her ex-husband left her bank accounts nearly empty. She doesn’t anticipate her arranged groom to be tall, dark and handsome! He also prays in Jesus‘a name before meals and insists on being married before a pastor and going to church every week—a characteristic both Elaine and I find appealing.
They wed shortly after Christmas, and the children are so cowed by their new stepfather that they don’t create as much chaos as they usually do. Rem, who describes himself as “not good with kids“, proves GREAT with Elaine’s kids and brings fun back to their home. However, they’re honest with each other about the money and the ranch being most important and the marriage being a business transaction, nothing more.
In late January Elaine’s mother comes to her house for her daughters’ birthday party—with her cheating younger daughter and son-in-law. Her ex-husband pulls her into his chest, her sister cattily says she’s trying to win him back, and Rem saves an awkward afternoon by ignoring the sister’s flirting and by acting affectionately toward Elaine.
Several months pass (all of which feel like winter to Texan Rem), and when he calls his mother on her March birthday, she berates him for not telling her he was getting married and begs him to come home for his father‘s last days; he has terminal pancreatic cancer. Rem returns to Texas and takes Elaine with him, only to witness her being treated rudely by his mother and his drunk brother, who says their father is going to give him the ranch—something he had taken away from him after a small argument escalated into the ranch being given to his brother—the brother Rem’s fiancée magically “decided” she wanted all along. Rem’s brother, who was left himself, then drops a bomb on Elaine, but Rem’s explanation clears it up—yet another twist for readers who think the couple deserve more trouble!
After the trip to Texas, Elaine fears Rem will try to relocate her family to Texas or, worse yet, go there without them, just like the last man she trusted. That would leave her where she started but with new heartbreak, as she has learned to care for Rem.
Rem, in turn, cares for Elaine and doesn’t want her to be burdened by a ranch in dire need of repair, which applies to his ranch as well as hers. They discuss possible financial fixes if the billion dollars don’t come…and when the lawyer’s secretary tells them that her letter was sent by mistake—another twist, one I didn’t see coming—they realize Rem needs to work on an oil field to earn money to repair the ranch, house, and outbuildings, including the lakeside cabins that could make money as rental properties.
On Rem’s final night before departure (following a stressful talk with the children, who accuse him of leaving “just like our last dad”), Rem takes a phone call from an unknown number. It’s the lawyer, who says his secretary made a mistake in saying that her letter was a mistake, and he needs to know where to deposit her billion dollars!
With the money, Rem no longer needs to leave the family for any oil fields, and the kids get a “Dad” who’ll stay with them forever. Rem and Elaine finally admit their feelings and have a “real” marriage as well…which means the “closed door” is needed!
I love Jessie’s work, and I highly recommend this book, which shows that faith and trust both make a successful marriage.

The characters in this story are vivid, true to life and fascinating. The two main characters are totally suited to each other, even though it takes time for them to discover this for themselves. Elaine is a divorced mother of four young children, who is struggling to hold on to the ranch that has been in her family for generations. Her neighbours have been kind and have often provided her family with groceries and other necessities. She hates being a charity case, but she will do anything for her kids. That includes marrying a stranger in order to inherit a billion dollar inheritance and keep the ranch. Remington (Rem) is a former champion bull rider who wants a ranch to call home, even if it comes with a wife and four small children. He is estranged and disowned from his family, and can’t afford to buy a ranch of his own with the amount he has saved. When Rem and Elaine’s mutual friend mentions that they could solve both of their problems if they wed, they agree to a first meeting. With Rem’s background check, his honest, forthright attitude and a willingness to help, Elaine agrees that they should wed. Each of them feels the pull of attraction and desire, but puts those feelings away, having both been burnt by their exes. They both hope for friendship and respect, but believe falling in love is not in their future. After the wedding, they fall into a comfortable routine, working along side each other, both inside and outside of their home. They do not share a bed, however, though perhaps that will happen once they get to know each other better. He has never been around kids, but her kids soon win his heart, and seek out his guidance. Their agreement is tested when she receives word that she will not get the inheritance...the letter was mistakenly sent to her. She waits for him to leave, and he is determined to stay. She can’t believe he would want to stay ....he married her for the money. Rem gave his word, and even though there is no inheritance, he has come to admire and respect the strong, determined and selfless woman he married. They agree to work together to save the ranch. Will this marriage of convenience turn into a true love match? Read this sweet, heartwarming romance to see what follows in the lives of this couple. This is another book for my keeper list!

I received an ARC of this book and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

This is another story in the Sweet Water Ranch Billionaire Cowboy series by Jessie Gussman. This one focuses on Elaine and Rem. Elaine's sad story was introduced in the previous book. Her husband left her and their four young children for Elaine's sister.

It was nice to see Ford and Morgan Hanson show up in this book. Ford introduces Elaine to her husband to be, Remington Martinez, an ex-professional bull rider. Remington has agreed to marry Elaine and turn her ranch around so she will inherit one billion dollars.

It was fun to watch them move from awkward to developing feelings for each other as Rem proved he was not like Elaine's ex-husband, James. It was interesting to see if Rem would stay when they were told Elaine should not have received the inheritance letter. It was also interesting to see how they were going to keep the family ranch when there were very limited funds between them.

I liked Elaine. She may seem meek and mild with low self-esteem but she is a wonderful role model for her four children. She is hardworking and will do anything to keep the ranch and support her children. She seldom complains and her children love her dearly and Rem comes to love her dearly too. I received an advance copy of this book and I willingly chose to write an honest review.

This sweet, and at times heartbreaking story is a 5+ stars story and a great addition the series.
If you have read the previous books (and I highly recommend you read them because they are wonderful) you met Elaine. A single, struggling mom with 4 small children. This is her story.
Remington/Rem Martinez is a Texan professional bull rider that after losing the ranch he thought would be his , has been approached by their mutual friend, Ford Hanson.
Elaine is one of the recipients of a letter informing her that she will get 1 billion dollars if she marries and stays in North Dakota. With the prospect of a ranch for Rem, and the possibility of help with her ranch, Elaine and Rem , two strangers, see this as a win-win for both of them.
But even when life throws them a curveball , a tentative relationship begins and though struggling to stay afloat, the children and North Dakota become important to Rem.
This is a story filled with the ups and downs of life for the couple , the children, and life on a ranch in North Dakota.
At times heartbreaking, at others heartwarming, it’s a story about hope, new beginnings and second chances in life and love.
Another winner in this series.
I was entrusted a copy of this book. The opinions expressed are solely my own.

I've read several of Jessie Gussman's books in this series. Each adds a depth to the characters in the story.

Elaine is a woman whose husband left her for her younger sister, leaving her with her family's ranch and no way to support their four children. He signed away his parental rights for 1/2 the worth of the farm. Now, Elaine has a huge debt and no way to pay it back. She needs help! Her friend, Ford, says he has a friend who can help her out.

Remington "Rem" is a friend of Ford's who had a very successful character as a professional bull rider. He was betrayed by his fiancé' and brother and then his father gave away the farm to his brother. Rem needs a change and Ford has proposed a marriage of convenience to his friend, Elaine. Elaine has a letter stating that she has inherited a billion dollars if she gets married. Rem is a Texas cowboy in need of farm and Elaine is a North Dakota farm girl in need of a husband. Both can make this work if they don't let feelings get involved. Is that even possible when they begin to see such wonderful qualities in each other and begin to think about a happy ever after?

This is a clean romance with plenty of chemistry. I was given an arc copy of this book and I willingly offer my honest review.

Jessie Gussman delivers another clean western romance!

Remington Martinez retired from a championship bull-riding career and is now in North Dakota preparing to marry a divorced woman with four children, sight unseen. On the plus side, his instant family will come with a billion dollars and a ranch, which will go a long way to make up for the ranch in Texas that he lost when his father disinherited him.

Elaine is not sure what she will be getting in a husband when she marries Remington but she is desperate to get the money in order to save the ranch that has been in her family for generations. She only hopes that he is a better man than her ex-husband. Elaine and Remington both know this is a business proposition, not a real marriage but she can't help admiring the tall dark Texan and he likes what he sees in this delicate, blond woman who has fought so hard to keep a ranch and feed her children with no support from their father.

Jessie Gussman writes great western romances and I love reading them. I like that Remington’s character portrays the real aftermath of a bull-riding career; the aches and pains of a lifetime of injuries from a sport he loved.

I was very curious to see what the story about Elaine was going to be about. She has been given a bad lot where her husband runs off with her little sister, leaving 4 children behind. She has a ranch that has been in her family and she was to keep it. But running it by herself and being a mother has become almost more than she can handle. When Morgan finds the letter addressed to Elaine that she would inherit a billion dollars if she gets married, she decides to help Elaine get married.

Rem was a champion bull rider who sunk all of his money into the family ranch that he was to inherit after his father passes. But he finds out that his father has other plans and cut him out making Rem’s brother the sole heir. So Ford decided that Rem would be a good man to marry Elaine. That way Rem gets a ranch and Elaine gets to keep her ranch. A win/win for both of them.

The story is one that keeps you turning the pages because you have to see if Rem and Elaine can really move past their business arrangement. I loved that their story is so down to earth and believable.

Each book I read makes me think it's my favorite. That holds true with this one also. Rem is getting a crash course interacting with children, but he does it so well. He treats them with respect and adds fun into their lives even as he inspires them to volunteer helping with chores.
Instead of counting on the inheritance to make the ranch work, they hunkered down to find a solution & something that would generate enough money for the ranch to survive. Even in the midst of potentially insurmountable odds, their character shines as they make their plans.
I enjoyed my next visit to this community as I got a chance to know more of the people who live here. Each visit presents more people with their own life-obstacles to overcome. Again, this is a story with a unique plot & people who are worth getting to know.
I received an ARC of this story, then found that I enjoyed the story so much that I bought a copy & can honestly say I liked it that much.

I have probably said this before but this has got to be my favorite of the Billionaire Series. This time it's Elaine's turn to have the marriage of convenience and it turns out to be all she wanted and didn't know she needed. After the way things had turned out for her and the kids it was the only way she saw their lives improving. The last thing she could afford to do was loose the ranch and not be able to take care of her kids. Rem's father had turned on him when all he ever wanted was a ranch of his own and now that dream only came with the quiet, strong, determined, sweet and beautiful mother of four. Neither thought they were deserving of love, after all it had slapped them both upside the head. What they find is something that so much stronger and so much more important than money, especially if he could convince her he will stay. Awesome read and while they are standalones the characters cross over and win your heart so you might as well read them all.

Rem wants a ranch! As a former bull riding champion, Rem made plenty of money but he put it all into his father's ranch expecting to someday inherit half of the ranch. Now his dad has cut Rem out of his will! Elaine's ex-husband is a real jerk who left her for her little sister and signed over parental rights if he did not have to pay child support for their four children! Elaine is trying to hang onto her family ranch by herself. Elaine will receive a billion dollars if she marries and stays in North Dakota! A friend vets Rem and introduces him to Elaine. They marry the next day in order to get the billion dollars and both have the ranch! You will love kind hearted Rem who shows Elaine and her children that there really are caring men out there! I thoroughly enjoy Cowboys Don't Have a Marriage of Convenience. I received a complimentary e-book from the author. This is my honest opinion.

Another really good book in the Sweet Water Ranch Series. This time it is Elaine who has to be married to get the billion dollars that was left to her. She is a mother of 4 and can barely make ends meet. She talks to Ford and Morgan about the letter and Ford checks out a guy he knows to marry Elaine and take care of her and her 4 children. He agrees because he wants the money and ranch.

She just needs someone to help her get the money and take care of the place for her. Neither one had met the other one until the day before they got married.

I love all the characters in this series and Remington and Elaine were no exception. The kids played a great part as well in the story.

I think the narrator Jay Dyess played a big part in bringing the characters to life and putting feeling into the story bringing the pages to life. If you have a chance to check these books out on Audio you really need too. They come to life right before your eyes.

Far fetched or real? Most of the books in this series seem a little far fetched about someone inheriting a billion dollars if they yada, yada, yada. But that’s what makes a good fiction tale. And these stories make for good fiction tales. Elaine is set to inherit a billion dollars if she married by such and such a date and stayed in North Dakota. Rem is the one his friend Ford recommends for Elaine as a marriage of convenience so they can inherit. Another part of this far fetched fiction is that Rem and Elaine fall in love! Aaawwww! I loved this far fetched fiction tale! I read/listened to this tale at least three times so far. And I will probably listen to it again sometime. Ms Jessie Gussman writes wonderful romantic tales. And Jay Dyess performs the audio wonderfully and seamlessly. I can easily highly recommend this far fetched tale. It’s good, clean Christian romance but far from preachy.

Ranch and Money?

Levine's husband, James, divorced her to marry her sister, Corria. Rem's fiancee, Olivia, left him to marry his brother, Max. Rem didn't want to go back to Texas, since his father changed his will to give Max the ranch. One of Rem's rodeo buddies set him up to meet and marry a mother of four children who would inherit a billion dollars if married in six months. He liked this idea since she also owned a ranch. After a not so smooth introduction in town, everything was up hill after that. The beautiful blonde he barely had time to say, "Merry Christmas" to at his stop for coffee, was Elaine his future wife. Rem and Elaine were married, so Elaine could inherit the money. Rem works the ranch, plays with the children, and helps Elaine around the house and sleeps on the couch.. The. Book is a clean romantic read. You'll hAve to reads the story to see what happens when they are told the gift of a billion dollars was a mistake.

I'm loving this whole Sweet Water Ranch Billionaire Cowboys series! In this installment we learn the story of Elaine, a woman with four small kids trying to run a ranch all alone with a shoestring budget after being abandoned by her husband when he ran off to marry Elaine's sister. She receives the offer that several of the male ranch owners received stating that if she marries and stays in North Dakota she will inherit one billion dollars. In order to save her ranch, Elaine marries Rem, an ex-rodeo champion with a broken heart who is ready to settle down and finds the offer to co-own the large ranch very appealing. Both enter into the marriage as a business arrangement with their eyes wide open; what they each see with those eyes is someone worth loving. It's a beautiful story that you'll want to read. Highly recommend!

Another exciting, wonderful, fun to READ addition to this dynamite series by Jessie Gussman! Her women are strong, determined, and loving characters and the men basically fit into the same mold. However, they usually need just a little guidance (or gentle push) from a friend or family. One thing you will always find in this series is a love for the North Dakota landscape and "heaven forbid" their ghastly winters. This story is finally about Elaine and Remington. We have seen her and her 4 children in almost every book and Remington has also appeared in at least one other book. Their journey is one that will have you cheering for both of them and the four precious children. A story to delight which is sweet, clean, with a good Christian values.
I received an ARC copy of this book. This is my voluntary, honest and completely personal review.

Cowboy’s Don’t Have A Marriage of Convenience by Jessie Gussman

I have to say that Rem and Elaine’s story was my favorite so far in this series! The trust they develop as they start to get to know one another’s characters, the slow burn attraction, the determined commitment to their marriage vows and their family. I could go on and on! What an amazing love story! I didn’t want it to end...

The pacing of this novel was just right and there was never too much angst, at least for my taste. There are some lovely kissing scenes, too.

I can’t wait to hear it on audiobook. Ms. Gussman has the most amazing narrator for her other books, Mr. Dyer, and he takes her excellent writing and makes it even more life-like and compelling.

5th book in the series. In this one Elaine gets her chance to shine, she has hung back in the shadows for the last couple of books. We have seen her run ragged from running her ranch, looking after her children and dealing with a divorce. Through all of this she has had a close group of friends who help her out where possible, until one of these friends gets her a groom to secure her future. She has never met him before, he is only after the chance to run a ranch of his own, love is not for him. Will she be going from the frying pan into the fire or will luck finally be on her side?

Well worth the read, you totally fall for this strong willed and determined woman who will do anything for her kids..

I received this as an arc and I am giving my honest review voluntarily

I received an ARC from the author; this is my honest review.
-Finally Remington's and Elaine's story! We heard about them throughout the other books and we knew Ford thought Rem crazy enough to accept a situation like the one Elaine lived in.
-First respect, then understanding and friendship, companionship, lust, and love. The pace between each is believable; their story touches the heart.
-You're just there wondering "what is wrong with their respective family? Can they not see?".
-I loved how Rem saw James pull Elaine against him and called him out on it. Wham! And Rem, again the hero, didn't even glanced at Corrie; he was more interested in Elaine and knew she needed that from him.
-Editing: I got a bit confused with the children's names as I counted six instead of four.

REM and Elaine make a great team, it started out about money and the ranch but soon turned to love. They proved it became more about love and family. Elaine was a hard worker trying to raise four kids on her own and take care of the ranch.REM was also a hard worker and an ex bull rider, he immediately started helping Elaine on the ranch and with her kids he was in pain from previous injuries from his bull riding days but he didn’t let that stop him. I loved every about this story. Jessie Gussman never ceases to amaze me. I don’t know how she comes up with all of these amazing stories but I sure hope it never ends. I get hooked on the next books while reading the epilogue of the last book. I highly recommend this book.

The Sweet Water Ranch series has been fun to read. This installment is the most fun of the lot, so far. That is saying a lot, since the protagonist, Elaine, has been thrown to the side by her husband - for her sister. She also has 4 of his children and a ranch to take care of, and very little money on hand. Then she receives a mysterious letter (is it a scam?) that promises a billion dollars if she gets married and stays in North Dakota. She doesn't trust ANY man; but she will do whatever it takes to keep her ranch in the family and provide for her children. She will even marry Rem, a dark-haired stranger from Texas, to whom she was introduced yesterday by good friends Ford and Morgan. Her only question is: will he stay when the going gets tough?

This book is a continuation of the Sweet Water books. Rem has come to North Dakota for the opportunity to marry a woman who owns a huge ranch. Both Rem and his new wife are hard workers but the ranch is failing because of steep debt. They expect this to be a business deal only, but Rem is very taken with Elaine - and her 4 children. Both of them have been burned badly in previous relationships so they are hesitant to act on their attraction to each other.

I really enjoy Jessie Gussman's work. Men and women work at success in their lives. And along the way, when they fall in love, it's very sweet and satisfying.

Ten stars!

I LOVED this book! I am giving it 10 stars! And yes, I can back my rating with intelligent reasoning—excellent characterization, exciting plot, good supporting characters, believable, natural conversations and a beautiful ending. But my rating is also because I emotionally just LOVED this book! Yes, this one is my favorite, very favorite book!
Thank you Ms. Jessie for writing an extremely swoony but wonderfully clean book! Thank you for naturally weaving Christian principles into the everyday actions and thoughts of the characters. You do not compromise good romance for a good book! You do BOTH amazingly well. Yes, ten stars!
