When Sandra Bishop is found strangled in the boot of a burned-out car, suspicion automatically falls upon Dennis Hamilton, the man at the wheel when the crash occurred. Hamilton, the author of a dozen crime novels, is suddenly caught up in a tangled mesh of events of the kind he normally creates. Then, he goes on the run and his behaviour becomes irrational. Another girl is murdered, and a vast manhunt is launched through the Breckland forests...
His first book as Robert Charles was 'The Faceless Fugitive' (1963) and up to 2010 he had written 33 novels as such with Blood and Sangria (2010) being the last one.
As Charles Leader he first published 'Frontiers of Violence' (1966) and wrote 17 books under that pseudonym up to 1978, the last being 'Kingdom of Darkness' (1978).
Fast-paced from the first page, this thriller builds the tension nicely and keeps it going right to the end.
Dennis Hamilton, a crime writer, finds himself a fugitive from the law after a car crash in which a dead woman is found in the boot. How did the body get there and did Hamilton really kill her?
Detective Superintendent Charles Grant leads the chase and, despite Detective Inspector Ronald Harding having no doubt of Hamilton's guilt, he is not so sure.
The culmination of the story is just as hair-raising as the lead-up and the exciting conclusion is as good as the rest.
