Une compagne convoitée

Rate this book

This was a harmless, sweet shifter mate story (unless you're me, then you get annoyed by the strangest things. see spoiler below).

James' grandfather sends a letter to his 3 grandsons telling them they have 9 months to mate or he is selling the family business to the competition. I hate these kinds of setups. Tell grandpa to go pound sand and get another job. Don't let yourself be manipulated into something as important as marriage/mates. But whatever. The whole story requires some suspension of disbelief.

James decides he will mate with his best friend Kaylee, who he's known since they were kids. They're *best friends*, and he can't think of anyone he'd rather spend the rest of his life with. Kaylee has loved James for years but never thought he'd see her that way. While James is gung-ho when his mating fever begins, Kaylee is stuck in the friend-zone and unsure if she should move forward.

This was a cute little story with 2 likable MCs. The romance was sweet, but not really very hot. It was a solid 3 star read.

I'm a huge fan of Vivian Arend's paranormal romances so I was really excited to find out she was starting a new trilogy about polar bear shifting brothers finding their mates. The Bear's Chosen Mate introduces us to the family and we see the patriarch encourage his grandsons to start seriously considering their futures and the possibility of starting families of their own.

James is the youngest brother but he has known who he would chose as his mate for years already so he's the one most open to the idea of settling down. Kaylee has been his best friend forever, she's a wildcat shifter not a polar bear but that doesn't bother James in the slightest. All he really cares about is that she's the perfect woman for him and if he's going to mate with anyone it has to be her. Kaylee has also been in love with James for years but she worries that they're too different and that she can't give him everything he needs in a partner. James is outgoing, the life and soul of the party and the face of the family's business while Kaylee is shy and quiet and hates nothing more than being in the spotlight.

I thought this was a great start to the series, I enjoyed meeting all of the brothers but the focus was definitely on James and Kaylee which is exactly as it should be in a romance. They were a really cute couple with great chemistry and I thought the mating fever was an interesting way of pushing them together. I thought Grandfather Giles was a bit mean with the way he tried to force the brother's into settling down but you could tell his heart was in the right place and I think he was making empty threats anyway. I did like that James and Kaylee both made him sweat a bit though, he deserved the little bit of revenge they took. I'm looking forward to getting to know the other brothers, Alex and Cooper, better. I have a feeling about who they'll both end up with but will have to wait and see if I'm correct, luckily I won't have to wait long as the rest of the series is publishing relatively soon.

After I read the blurb, I basically made grabby hands at this baby ~ okay, I would have anyways considering who the author is, but still ~ because it sounded like it was going to be a whole lot of fun and it was! It was a fun, quick, low on drama but hella smexy read filled with characters I want more of.

I really liked James and Kaylee and their journey from friends to mates was a lot of fun to experience, especially when it came to all that goes on during the mating fever *fans face and grins*. Their friendship was solid, but I loved watching as they both FINALLY dove into something deeper and showed just how well they truly knew who the other was and how open and honest they were about their insecurities, wants and desires.

This was an easy, very character driven read that I absolutely enjoyed. While the romance side was easy, the world is complex and vibrant when it comes to the unique characters that inhabit it. Grandpa Giles is a character and I loved seeing how similar and yet not Alex, Cooper and James were ~ considering they are polar bears. And then there are Lara and Amber, who couldn’t be more different and yet find common ground. So, I’m definitely looking forward to getting my hands on the next two books and getting to spend a lot more time with all of them!

This is one of those sweet little insta love paranormal romances that gets you addicted to a world and its characters in very short bites.
Kaylee and James have been friends for forever, and this mating heat he's decided she's joining him. So the ratio of sex scenes to rest of the book is pretty high.
There's not a huge amount happening elsewhere in this book: it's very character driven. The book is basically a week of mating fever and a few other snippets that were underdeveloped. I would have liked more about their lives as individuals as well, or just a smidge more world building in general.
The epilogue is basically the prologue for the next book, so bring on Lara and Alex.

Vivian Arend is a prolific Canadian romance writer. I first discovered her books with her Adrenaline Search and Rescue series (which I love!) set in the Canadian Rocky Mountains, and then I dove into her multiple contemporary series set in and around Rocky Mountain House, Alberta. But she’s also well known for her paranormal romances, and having not yet read any of those, I decided to pick up the first in her new Borealis Bears series. The Bear’s Chosen Mate is a fun, sexy, friends-to-lovers romance with great touches of Canadiana in the setting and animal shifters featured, proving to be just the ticket for an escapist read.

The series concept is pretty basic. Grandpa runs Borealis Gems, the family company set in the Northwest Territories (northern Canada). He wants to see his three grandsons – James, Alex and Cooper – married within the next nine months, before his New Year’s Eve birthday, or he’ll sell off his shares of the company (ergo, no inheritance). He doesn’t buy their excuses about being too busy, or not wanting to go through the effort of finding a mate so he’s forcing their hands… errr… paws. All polar bears go through a week of mating fever, wherein if they are in the vicinity of a like-minded female, it generally leads to settling down into a relationship. Like any sane male, the Borealis brothers have learned to hide out and avoid all females during the fever week. But this year, they all agree to see what fate decides. And in truth, only bears who are with their ‘forever loves’ during mating week actually end up tied down, so to speak.

For youngest brother James, the only woman he can imagine even wanting to spend mating fever week with is his best friend Kaylee Banks, a bobcat shifter and photographer. Little does he know that Kaylee has had a crush on him for years, but never acted on it for fear of losing their friendship. And James may have had some inappropriate thoughts about Kaylee in return. When Grandpa gets his little matchmaking hat on and sends Kaylee to James’ apartment just as the fever hits him, it’s too hard for Kaylee to resist his befuddled amorous advances. With an understanding between them that they’ll indulge in their mutual attraction while James is struck with his lustful mating fever they make the most of their week together. But will it be so easy to go back to being just friends?

I love shifter stories that have a lot of humour, and the author provides this quite handily with the two characters and the conversations they have with their shifter personas. For James, it’s exactly what you would expect; a lumbering burly bear who is interested in the simple things in life – food, sleep, and sex. While James is trying to keep thoughts of Kaylee to a PG level, his bear is envisioning her naked in their shower and their bed. In contrast, Kaylee’s bobcat is sharp witted, good at internal eye rolling, and definitely not shy. This provides plenty of laugh out loud moments as Kaylee and James have to contend not only with their ‘human’ attraction to each other, but also their animals egging them on. The love scenes are fun and sexy, as the author brings those character traits and her usual steamy heat to the story.

Kaylee and James might be best friends but they are definitely opposites. As a scion of the Borealis family and a company executive, James is often involved in social and business events. Kaylee, on the other hand, would rather avoid the limelight, thinking of having a relationship with a man who is so comfortable in the public eye gives her hives. She definitely doesn’t think she’s the right woman for James, despite their newfound compatibility in bed. She has other issues too, emotional baggage from her upbringing that have left her with abandonment fears, and losing her best friend would be devastating. And then there’s the whole problem of whether their newfound feelings for each other are real. When the mating fever subsides, James knows that Kaylee is his mate, the woman with whom he wants to spend his life, but Kaylee’s insecurities make her question the veracity of those feelings.

The path to their happy ending involves a bit of over the top drama that leads to grand gestures on both their parts, and the sealing of their mating bond. But the somewhat contrived ending didn’t detract from my overall enjoyment of the story. The epilogue gives a hint of the enemies-to-lovers plot of the next in the series, The Bear’s Fated Mate and James’ brother Alex’s story. Low angst, high heat, lots of laughs – The Bear’s Chosen Mate is a recommended read for paranormal romance fans!

Three and a half
I was very excited when I heard this author was writing a Polar Bear shifter trilogy as I loved her Wolf stories and absolutely adored her sweet and sexy Cowboy books. Here we meet three brothers all trying to avoid Mating but with a interfering, meddlesome, not to mention loving grandfather on their case it seems like their carefree bachelor days might soon be a thing of the past ! The youngest brother James isn't too bothered though because he's got his eye on kitty cat Kaylee but as she's his best friend how can he ever convince her that what he feels for her is real and everlasting ?
This is hard to review for me because I just didn't love it as much as I'd hoped. It definitely felt like a first in series introducing characters and I do realise that friends to lovers trope is highly appealing to many readers. I think I probably prefer plot driven stories whilst the majority of this was just sexy times with a wee bit of angst thrown in . However that having been said the last third completely ramped up my interest with unusual parcels arriving and a character introduced that has me desperate to know more about her. Unfortunately not my favourite book from this author but it definitely was a sweet and steamy read that I'm sure many will enjoy.
This voluntary take is of an advanced copy and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair

It's a free steamy read. Long term friends become lovers when the H is taken by the mating frenzy. The h has kept him at a friendly distance but she genuinely loves him. Short, sweet OK read.

Exceptions for the Cute Furry One

I like how Kaylee Banks and James Borealis expand their friendship to include some... very passionate playtime. I love how we get to see the trueness of their friendship, their patience and confidence in that relationship even after they cross into much more.

There was a problem. A great big enormous one, one hundred percent on her side of the equation.

She was hopelessly, helplessly in lust with one of her best friends. He not only had no idea, but she was the last person on earth he needed in his life as anything other than a friend.

-- Kaylee Banks

There's trouble brewing, not only with how the Borealis men handle their meddling grandfather and his demands, but also the ladies that are going to spin them on their heads. I look forward to enjoying more.

I read along with the audio book. The narrator is Tatiana Sokolov. She consistently does a good job narrating.

The Bear's Chosen Mate is a pretty short book. I was able to read it in one sitting; in less than a couple of hours. In addition to being a short read, this book is also pretty lighthearted, low angst with a small amount of suspense that I believe will resolve with the last book in the series. Or maybe the next one; I'm not entirely sure.

Because this book moved so fast and was short, I new not to expect a lot of character development. Otherwise I would have been disappointed. That said, I was NOT disappointed. I really enjoyed this book. Maybe I'm biased a little bit because Vivian Arend is included in my list of favorite authors and I love her books. Her writing always engages me from the first page to the last.

Let me get to it......
The Borealis brothers are Polar Bear shifters. All three brothers are unmated and happy to remain that way. It's not until their meddlesome grandfather threatens to sell his shares of their extremely successful business, unless they find mates, that lights a fire under them. You see, once a year, bear shifters experience what is call mating fever. It is during that one week's time they can find their mate. If they want to. If they don't want a mate, they will hide away for the week. Which do you think the brothers have been doing? ;)

Youngest brother James decides to let nature take it's course. This time around when the fever hits, he plans on seducing his best friend Kaylee. If he has to spend forever tied to a woman, he wants it to be her. Unfortunately, Kaylee doesn't believe herself worthy of James. He will have to convince her. James doesn't mind. He's always loved Kaylee so there is no other option but to convince her to mate with him.

But what if Kaylee is not his chosen mate?

This couple gets together pretty fast. But Kaylee gives James a run by being so stubborn and insecure.

I really found this book a fun and enjoyable read. In fact, while I was swooning over James most of the time; I also found myself smiling and giggling throughout.

Next brother to find his mate is intense, head of security, middle brother Alex. It will be so much fun seeing this alpha Polar bear meet his match, in every way. Lara is a tough heroine. Literally and figuratively.

This is my honest and unbiased opinion. Thank you for taking the time to read it. :)

Note: At the time of this review, the ebook is free on most platforms.

I really enjoyed Arend's Six Pack Ranch series (also narrated by Tatiana Sokolov) - so when I saw all the audiobooks in the Borealis Bears series were less than $3 each on Kobo, I grabbed them.

This was such a fun and easy listen. I really enjoy friends-to-lovers and James & Kaylee didn't disappoint. The banter between them and between themselves and their animals (James' polar bear, Kaylee's bobcat) cracked me up. While there's a fated mates theme to the story, there's no doubt that these two want each other for who they are. Yes, there are several steamy, steamy sex scenes - but it's also obvious that James & Kaylee have a deep and devoted friendship.

There's some secondary storylines that will obviously weave through the rest of the series, but this doesn't end on a cliffhanger for the couple. Fairly low angst with most conflict coming from external sources.

Narration:
I already love Tatiana Sokolov's narrations. She was great here. Not only giving unique voices to all the characters - but to their animals as well. James' interactions with his polar bear were perfect. Loved it.

I first discovered this author with her shifter series, so when I learned she was going back to those roots I was super excited, then I learned the books were about bears, heck yeah I couldn't wait to read them.

I hate to say it, but I was a little bored while reading this one. Grandpa Giles's letter annoyed me. I thought the least he could have done was tell the boys in person. The romance between James and Kat seemed fast, but then again the whole story did. I get that James and Kat were friends, but their whole secret crush seemed to come out of no where. The one thing that I did really like about this was that James decided to use the circumstances to his advantage and go after Kat and then when things changed for him he did his best to reassure her that she was absolutely what he wanted.

The ending was a bit odd for me. Kat dealing with the chaos of her parents, I kept wondering why she didn't call someone to give them a heads up. Although I did love the entrance she made and the speech she gave. It sure would have made a memorable event.

Grandpa Giles Borealis, owner of Borealis Gems, was tired of waiting for his grandchildren to finally find good shifter girls and get married. Then, close to turning 85, he gave an ultimatum: the grandchildren would have 9 months to find their mates, or he would sell the entire empire to his opponents.

Cooper was the current CEO, while his parents traveled the world.
Alex was the head of security.
James, the youngest, was the company's PR.

When traveling to Yellowknife, and meeting an old friend, James was unlucky enough to get into his Polar Bear mating fever. From then on, Kaylee Banks would have no escape.

Not that she wanted an escape.
Kaylee (bobcat shifter) has always been in love with James, but circumstances never seemed to be conducive to being together. After all, they were already great friends.
However, after the fever passes, James wants to continue the relationship because he knows Kaylee is "the one", but she claims she doesn't feel the same way about him.
Now, he would have to convince her that they could work together.

Listen. Hear me out.

I downloaded this for free on Kindle because I’m always interested in shifter books, the weirder the better.

Why? I don’t know. I’m morbidly fascinated, I guess. I want to know what exactly is supposed to be appealing about a man who can turn into a lion or a hedgehog or whatever. Why is that sexy?

So, when this one shows up for free I think, sure! Polar bear shifters. That seems weird and I’ll probably get a laugh out of it.

Jokes on me because this was actually great.

I loved the characters. Their romance was actually very sweet and I loved the extra aspect of Kaylee struggling with anxiety (*I* have anxiety. Maybe I can find a polar bear man to love me.)

Also, there was a whole ass business espionage plotline in here that read better and was more interesting than 90% of the CEO romance books that I’ve read. This one felt like the author actually understood what business people do in a day.

I’m not gonna say this is my new fav book or anything but I genuinely enjoyed it and I plan to read the rest of the series so...jokes on me.

Well that was a ton of fun. I love shifter books and I think this was my first polar bear book. It was definitely my first polar bear/bobcat pairing, such fun! Sexy, fast, read that did a great job setting up the premise and world without feeling like a data dump in such a compact book - thumbs up on this one, and the rest of the series!

The Bear's Chosen Mate by Vivian Arend was a quick and fluffy read!

James Borealis and Kaylee have been friends since childhood and when James' Grandfather forces his grandsons to secure a forever mate James knows exactly who he wants by his side... Kaylee. A simple feel-good romance that delivers charming characters with minimal conflict.

Oh, how I love bears! Big, grumpy, clumsy, single-minded, bears.

Faced with an ultimatum, youngest Borealis brother James, knows who he wants in his life. His best friend, and bobcat shifter, Kaylee, has had him lusting after her forever. But things don’t go smoothly, and while James is all in, Kaylee and her kitty need some convincing. There is no question of the heat of the attraction between them, and their emotions are fully involved, but getting fate on their side isn’t easy

Sexy and funny, and setting us up with a wonderful cast of characters, this was an awesome read!

Meh

I believe I’ve read most of Canadian author Vivian Arend’s contemporary romance books but this is my first foray into her paranormal works. The three key components to this book, the friends to lovers trope, animal shifters and a mating fever are not unique. But the author manages to put them all together in a unique and entertaining way that creates a romantic, sexy, light on angst story. As with all first books in a series part of this book is devoted to introducing us to the characters who will be the main players in the entire series and a brief introduction into the shifter world and it’s culture.
This series tells the stories of the three polar bear shifter Borealis brothers search for their mate as mandated by their cantankerous but loving grandfather Giles Borealis. The three brothers Cooper, Alex and James all hold key executive positions in the family company Borealis Gems but it’s grandpa’s company. Grandpa bluntly tells his three grandsons that it’s time they stopped ignoring the mating fever when it hits them (only polar bear shifters are subject to the fever) and find mates because he and grandma want some grandchildren. If not, he’ll sell the company to their chief competitor Midnight Diamonds. While his older brothers chaff at Gile’s dictum youngest brother James feels more than ready to comply. James has been in love with his childhood best friend Kaylee (a bobcat shifter) for as long as he can remember and grandpa’s order is just the motivation he needs to finally make a move on her. Kaylee for her part has also been in love with James for as long as she can remember. But unlike James she fears a deeper relationship will never work because due to her parents constantly undermining her sense of self-worth and self-confidence she feels unworthy to be the mate that stands at his side as the high profile public face of his family’s business. With some coaxing from James Kaylee admits she’s in love with him and would love to be his mate but she has serious reservations as to whether she’s the one for him. Further complicating the problem is that despite spending the week of James’s mating fever having nearly non-stop sex with him Kaylee still doesn’t feel that special bond she’s expected to experience if she is his true mate. It takes some time and some courage on the parts of both of our fated lovers for the magic bonding to happen. I don’t think I’m giving away a spoiler here since if you know anything about romance novels you know the couple will eventually overcome the obstacles to their happily ever after. It’s the journey that makes the story worth reading and this one IMHO is worth it. Also, although it’s unusual, by the time you finish this story you’ll know exactly whom brothers Cooper and Alex’s future mates are although Alexi’s book isn’t due out until later this Fall and Cooper’s not until early next year.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date August 20, 2019

He’s going to accept his fate—but only with the woman he chooses!

Youngest brother James Borealis figures if he has to get mated, it should be with someone he already knows and cares about—his best friend Kaylee. But when the mating fever hits, she’s still stuck in friendshipland while he’s ready to move all the way to true love and forever.

Kaylee has heard about polar bear mating fever, but while James has held the starring role in her fantasies for a long time, she’s not about to leap into a permanent relationship that’s all wrong for him. He’s the PR powerhouse for Borealis Gems while she’s a quiet bobcat shifter with massive family baggage. He loves the spotlight; she wants to hide in quiet corners.

But mating fever knows best, and when the storm settles, there’s no use in arguing with a polar bear’s choice.

••••••••••••

REVIEW: 3.5 stars--THE BEAR’S CHOSEN MATE is the first instalment and novella in Vivian Arend’s contemporary, adult BOREALIS BEARS paranormal, romance series focusing on the polar bear shifters of the Borealis Bears. This is youngest brother businessman James Borealis, and feline shifter / photographer Kaylee Banks’ story line.

Told from several third person perspectives including James and Kaylee THE BEAR’S CHOSEN MATE follows the friends to lovers relationship between polar bear shifter James Borealis, and feline shifter Kaylee Banks. Patriarch Giles Borealis is hoping to hand over the reigns of Borealis Gems to his three grandsons but in an effort to help things along, Giles blackmails his heirs into finding mates, or lose control of Borealis Gems. James, Cooper and Alex have no intention of tying themselves down with one woman but the mating fever is about to take control. When the mating fever hits, James only wants one woman, his best friend, Kaylee Banks. What ensues is the mating dance between Kaylee and James, and the potential fall out as Kaylee doesn’t feel the urge to mate the same way James feels about his life-long friend.

THE BEAR’S CHOSEN MATE is a quick, erotic, paranormal read; an introductory tale that hints at a possible threat to Borealis Gems. A character driven story line, THE BEAR’S CHOSEN MATE is a fun, sassy and sexy look at shifters in love.

A couple of issues: I was hoping for a little more background history with regards to Kaylee and James; and the confusing addition of a shipment of ‘product ‘ from Kaylee’s parents, an addition that appears to come out of left field, without explanation or purpose-perhaps there is something in future instalments that explains this particular story line inclusion.

This was book #30 for Romanceopoly 2020/#29 for the moon challenge pack.

Square: The Vault
Challenge Pack: Moon
Challenge: Read the PNR that has been on your TBR for the longest.

So this PNR hasn't been on my TBR list for all that long since I only started reading PNR with the start of this challenge. That said, I picked it up after seeing Francesca from Under the Covers talk about it in a vlog and it sat in my Kindle for a month or so. I kept looking at it and thinking that it might be fun to read, but kept putting it off for some reason or another, but it fit in perfectly with today's square! (There's a lot of talk about fate in here, maybe she had something to do with it? Granted, they're talking about fated mates... but a fated read is *totally* the same thing, right?)

The Borealis brothers have received an ultimatum from their grandfather telling them to stop avoiding mating fever and find their mates before his next birthday or else. While his older brothers try to figure out a way around this edict (by following the letter of the "request," but possibly not the intent), youngest brother James decides that he's going to decide on his own mate: his best friend Kaylee. When mating fever hits him, it hits hard - and scares the crap out of Kaylee and her inner large cat (though she kinda likes the furry bear and his take charge attitude). James has to convince Kaylee and her cat that this isn't just mating fever and that he wants her as his mate. Kaylee fights her feelings until she realizes that once this bear has made his choice, she doesn't really stand a chance.

One thing I've learned from participating in Romanceopoly is how much I didn't know I enjoyed PNR, especially shifters. (Though I do love a good witch story too...) This was a quick, fairly lighthearted read that I didn't want to put down - I read this in just a couple of hours and enjoyed every minute. 4.5 stars for this one!

I’ve read several of this author’s contemporary romances and enjoyed them. Unfortunately, I didn’t care much for this paranormal romance.

James is a polar bear shifter and his best friend Kaylee is a bobcat. When his grandfather gives he and his brothers ultimatums about finding their mates (three brothers, three books in this series), James knows in his heart that Kaylee is the only woman who he wants. The story was okay to this point, but sadly went downhill from here.

It wasn’t hard to see James and Kaylee start a relationship since they both had feelings for the other, but neither wanted to damage their friendship by pushing for more. Once James made the decision for more, he was all in and made it very clear how he felt. Kaylee on the other hand kept having second thoughts and lacked any confidence whatsoever. She believed because she couldn’t stand in front of a crowd/audience that she was no good for James. Yep, that was Kaylee’s reason and why she was willing to deny both of them happiness. The introduction of Lara for the next book was awkward, as was the entire bar scene. The minor conflict at the end with Kaylee’s parents and the delivery of boxes and their contents was completely ridiculous. Caps, cats - seriously! It was added to try and make it appear as if Kaylee was having second thoughts, but it was too obvious and farfetched. Then the truck not cranking, the water, yeah it was eye rolling. Even Kaylee making the speech didn’t fit the story and felt unnatural.

Many other readers may enjoy this story, however I don’t believe I will be finishing the series.
