I wrote my first book when I was 8 years old. I glued photos of my cats in a blank book and wrote about them, too. Now I am an internationally-published children's author commended by the Library of Congress for my work encouraging children to read.
I write in a room between a deli and an art gallery on a small town street. I can see families walking by, and I can hear children laughing and playing. It helps me to remember what exactly I'm doing this for - creating books for families all over the world to use together, and helping children to love words.

I want to say, right off, I loved this book. I thought it was very informative and would be a wonderful resource for elementary school age children. The illustrations were gorgeous, soft yet vibrant and so very colorful.

There is a wide variety of animals in this book, animals from both rivers and oceans. Their habitats, eating habits and life cycles are discussed. The text is not heavy, it is short paragraphs, perfect for a young audience. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about these animals. The accompanying art was just beautiful. The various habitats, and animals were drawn in great detail, usually in motion, and that was represented well.

I gave this four stars for one reason, and that reason was a sentence on sharks. The sentence was "The great white shark is a fearsome ocean giant that would eat you." The first half of that sentence is true, the second half is not, and, quite frankly I was so shocked that someone would put that in a non-fiction book. Great white sharks are endangered. They do not swim through the ocean thinking, there's a surfer and my lunch. They do not actively hunt humans, that has been proven to be false. Sharks, if you take the time to do research, usually attack us due to the fact that their eyesight is poor and they mistake us for their main prey, seals. I simply could not believe someone would put that in a book that would be widely disseminated. It was so lacking in care, and such a foolish, careless thing to put in print.

Overall, for what it was, an educational book, with, in my humble view, one horrible glaring mistake.

Earth is often called the blue plant as 71% of earth is covered by water. Each page of this beautifully illustrated book invites us to think about the role water plays in our world and the plants and animals that share it with us. It talks about the water cycle, our five oceans and all the creatures that make them their home. It teaches us about the mighty rivers and many lakes that are teaming with life. It then goes on to show us how we are part of this cycle and depend on the water for life ending with a message to treasure it.

While I enjoyed this book for the most part, I was disappointed at the mention of cruise ships and the barely there mention of not wasting water and keeping it clean. If a form of environmentalism is talked about then cruise ships should not have been added like it was a good thing and two brief sentences are not nearly sufficient when talking about water issues.

This one is a 3.5 for me. I liked the inclusion of a table of contents and index, elements not typically found in introductory nonfiction. I also appreciated that there are online resources available to support young readers and provide extensions to the book's content. Essentially an introduction to the water cycle and the wonders of water on this planet, the book also identifies various species that live in various oceans and rivers as well as how humans make use of water--for transportation, homes, and play but also for drinking. My favorite pages would have to be those in the section entitled "Follow the River" as readers make note of the journey melted snow makes before arriving at its final destination. Each double-page spread has a title and a particular water-related focus. The text is brief, and the illustrations are filled with texture. The last pages remind readers to be grateful for having easy access to water since that isn't the case for everyone. This book might spawn curiosity to learn more about conserving water or the various species highlighted on its pages.

I love this as an overview of oceans and rivers for little kids. It works as a great introduction to the animals and boats and systems involved in both. My two favorite pages are the one about the Water Cycle and about Rivers. They walk you through each in a straightforward child friendly way. I don't think I've ever seen rivers flowing through high on a mountain down to the sea growing larger quite this well before for kids. A well planned and executed nonfiction book for kids.

It's a beautiful book, and a solid introduction to the water cycle, but the parts in-between don't flow very well. I appreciate the Table of Contents and index, just wish the overall information felt more orderly and natural. It was like each two page spread was its own beast.

(Think steve jenkins meets eye wonder books, both great but don't hybridize too well...)

Simple version: This is an elaborate introduction to the water cycle.

Nice that it included a TOC and an Index. The spreads don’t flow in an intuitive way for young readers, though individually they convey interesting information.

This picture book is PACKED with information about everything water. From the water cycle, to lakes, to oceans, to houses on water, to transportation on water. This would make a good independent read for 2nd grade and up.
