Perdita (Perdie) Stone is a senior associate at a major Charleston law firm. She’s in North Dakota deposing a company CEO her firm is suing on behalf of a client and she’s up against hotshot Ivy League attorney Carter Leplan. Perdie outfoxes him, forcing them into a major settlement. After she agrees to share a ride to the airport with Carter, they find themselves snowed in and forced to also share the one available hotel room. Things get out of hand but Perdie decides not to worry since he’s west coast and she’s not. Thinking the meeting her boss sets up with her upon her return is to congratulate her and announce she’s being made a partner, Perdie is completely unprepared to find Carter in the meeting being introduced as the firm’s new partner.
Having seen this scenario played out so many times in real life, I thought I knew the probable path this story would take but spiced a bit because of what happened between Carter and Perdie in North Dakota. Unfortunately, nothing about Perdie was recognizable, at least for me, as everything she did felt improbable, immature and unprofessional.
This is definitely one of those situations where it’s me not being the right audience for this story. As someone who worked hard to rise above gender discrimination in male dominated fields, my own experience didn’t come close to Perdie’s behavior, or anyone else’s in my world (including lots of lawyers). I couldn’t get beyond the sexual interludes in the office, at company events and other extremely risky locales, along with excessive drinking and pot smoking. Not judging…they just didn’t fit (did I forget to mention that Perdie is 39 years old?). I never bonded with or respected her, even when she earned my sympathy. There are good bones to the story and it could have been something special, which is why I rounded up. It just wasn’t for me since there are quite a few positive reviews from an audience that seems more befitting. I’d check those out before you decide. 2.5 stars
I wasn't sure what to expect from the cartoon cover here (despite everyone telling me this book delivers on the spice), but when I actually sat down to read it I was like, "Oh boy... this is spicy." It's not monster dicks and alien spur spicy, but for regular humans it's pretty up to snuff with the dirty talk and sex in public locations.
This is one of those books where everything's happening rapid fire. You're not going to be sitting there in a lull wondering when the drama is going to start. It *is* the drama. You're in it. There's back and forth with the we can't do this, but we can't help it, but we need to stay away from each other, and we're fucking again somehow, but sometimes you just want something that's going to entertain and make you laugh and make you moan, and this is it.
I loved that Perdie is older (there's still a serious lack of that in the romance genre) and that she's a hot mess (but a successful hot mess) with no desire to change at this point in her life. I enjoyed Carter's chasing after her and just letting his desires, wants, and emotions out whenever he wanted rather than being a stuffy, emotionless lawyer. And I liked the cast of side characters, especially the quirky best friend.
Some characters I did not like were the asshole men working at the law firm, but that's life and law firms for you. Not something I was surprised to find in a book about a heroine struggling to make partner. People are real upset about a small portion of this book regarding the dog (you can read some of those reviews if you'd like because I'm not sure how to do the spoiler tag here and I don't want to learn right now) but that didn't bother me at all. If they don't want to read it because of that, that's fine, but I think it's wholly unfair to rate a book you haven't read TWO STARS because you heard something happens in a book...that you haven't read. That's bullshit.
Anyways, this book reads like a better, hotter Hallmark movie (where everything is slightly over the top the entire time but you're having so much fun enjoying it you don't even care) with way more fucking. So if that's your vibe then you should definitely check it out! I read it during my vacation and it felt perfect for that sort of setting.
The author sent me a copy of this book with no expectations (she didn't actually ask me to read and review it) and after like 2 months I finally read it and am writing this review because I genuinely enjoyed it.
“Complimenting the enemy is a bold strategy.”“Enemy, huh? Well, if you’re my enemy, then maybe I should switch to your side.”
Oh I really enjoyed this one and whew! The smut was just amazing. Don't judge this book by it's cover. It may seem like another typical rom-com but it's so much more smutty than I expected it to be. Carter & Perdie's personalities clashed hard and the games they played always snagged my attention. It's a sexy enemies to lovers book with enjoyable characters and humorous banters. Carter & Perdie's chemistry was off the chars amazing! The writing was perfect and some scenes just downright gave me butterflies and I was won over! I'm looking forward to read more of the author's work. The downside however was that sometimes I felt like Perdie was too self absorbed and her inability to commit was dragging out but Carter balanced that out, I loved him!
I confess, it took me 34% to connect with the book but even then hero Carter Leplan…. He was dreamy!!!
This book had it all. Age gap (heroine is 39 and hero 34), forced proximity, one bed, hero heroine initially at cross road, office romance and a strong, deep friendship. I would say this is Perdita stone’s story. A strong, bold lawyer she was nevertheless frustrated about the work place inequality. I never thought women had to go so much. At times it made me mad on behalf of all the ladies. But I’m happy that she finally took control of her fear and achieved so much. It was clear initially itself that Carter was smitten with her. He showed his 100 percent to her. Vulnerability and all and I applaud him for it. And what a dirty talker he was 🥵. This book is one of the steamiest book I’ve ever read.
There was also a bunch of secondary characters that I loved. Safe and recommended.
P.s there is a scene where heroine kisses another man after meeting and kissing hero. But nothing happens between heroine and OM and he loved him. He later became her friend.
This book took hold of me and I couldn't put it down, finished it in two sittings!
Tropes included 😍 - forbidden workplace romance - forced proximity (one hotel room one bed) - small age gap - grumpy/sunshine - guy falls in love first
I officially need to read everything Cat Wynn writes because this was freaking addictive and I need more men like Carter in my life (his dirty talk is everything!!!).
The banter and the games they play with one another are full of sexual tension, I love the workplace setting and will definitely be looking more into books with that! This is a MUST read for steamy contemporary romance fans 🔥
Thank you to the author for gifting me a copy for review
Y’all, this book was so fun! A steamy office romance, one bed, the FMC is older then the MMC, the banter…sooo good and made for such an enjoyable read! It’s relatively short too, so it’s a great palate cleanser if you find yourself knee deep in fantasy world building. Highly recommend!
Thanks to the author for gifting me a copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This was a very fun, steamy read! I absolutely adored Carter and Perdie’s chemistry from the very first time they interact, which is in a courtroom and she completely obliterates him. What made me love Carter immediately is the fact that he took his loss in stride, complimenting Perdie for her skill. And then…there are other things that made me love Carter. Let’s just say, for a series of unfortunate events, the two wind up being in the same hotel room. With only one bed.
Did I catch your interest? I thought so.
The moment The One Bed Trope happens, I was reading this book anticipating the next scene with Carter. Yet that didn’t mean I was bored during the rest. On the contrary, Partner Track had such an amazing cast of characters and a wonderful friendship between Perdie and her longtime friend Lucille that I had fun even when I wasn’t reading romantic scenes. I mean, Perdie and Lucille are basically my sister and me. I won’t accept a man who won’t allow me to live close to my sister. Sorry not sorry.
The romance was on point, and it had so many elements that I adore. It’s a workplace romance, so there’s a bit of a forbidden aspect, and I’ve already mentioned the One Bed, and (Insert Fangirl Scream Here) there’s a whole sequence where they’re snowed in together! There’s also a slight age gap, where she is older than he is by a few years. The perfection! There were a few times I wanted to shake Perdie out of frustration, but she eventually does it herself and starts working on her insecurities and fears. In the end, this was a romance, yes, but also the story of a woman who learns to takes risks for her happiness, her career, and love.
P.S. There is the death of a pet in this book, which made me cry and then kiss my dog. I know it can be difficult for some to read, so I’m mentioning it here.
Thank you to the author for gifting me a copy. Opinions are my own.
Huge thanks to the author gifting me an e-arc! I enjoyed this one.
The dynamic of the characters, the plot was realistic and definitely things seen in certain workplaces. The spice was woah, definitely for mature audiences but the flow was great! The steady pace of the story definitely kept me hook. Took me longer than I would’ve wished for because of my work schedule but this is definitely a binge worthy book.
I enjoyed the evolution of the characters, the different situations in the book addressed real life issues, the sexiness between the characters was woah… loved the banter! I will definitely be reading more by this author! I was looking for a cute romcom to read and I got romance, spice 🥵, and a great story!
So no warning is in the blurb and the author doesn’t give any warning promoting this book on Twitter? But apparently the dog Bananas DIES in this book?? Who DOES that when the cover includes the dog and looks like a light, cutesy book with that cover? This book is not for me. That is so rude and so upsetting.
Definitely a cute read. Perdie was a fun character and I enjoyed seeing her relationship progress. I didn’t expect as much spice as it had, but that was a fun bonus!
If you need sone Easy, light reading, this is your book!
•5 🍆🍆🍆🍆🍆 spice There is A LOT of sex in this book. The first two instances of sex don't even involved penetration. It was great. It is sex for sex but then it evolves to more emotional sex, the FMC even cries after they have sex once.
•Dirty talking beta MMC. The dirty talk was really good, similar to a very popular author known for their dirty talk, but slightly less corny. The term "bad girl" is used a lot.
•The FMC- Perdie is MESSY AF. She's self centered but determined. She blows people off but also cares deeply. Think Naomi from YDEO but slightly worse.
•Fantastic female friendship. Perdie and her BFF, Lucille live together. They own their condo together. They are proclaimed to be each others person. Romantic partners are secondary to that. Perdie and Lucille co-parent an elderly dog.
•Work relationship where the MMC is not the savior although he wants to be.
•Perdie decides to go to therapy.
Not good or bad •This book is VERY fast paced. Wynn's writing made me think of Gilmore Girls, insomuch as you gotta keep up. Things are happening and there is no time to delay.
More (sex) vibes than plot.
The reasons I didn't rate this higher
•I felt like there were some missing pieces. I wanted more on how Perdie and Lucille became friends. Their friendship was a bright point, I wanted more.
•Perdie and
CW: Sexual harassment in the work place, shitty mother, weed smoking on page
Very cute and a fun time! Age gap romance (39/32 yr old) set in Charleston, SC. Lots of spicy scenes and our main love interest is head over heels for our heroine who is the definition of grumpy! Overall a quick read and very bingeable once you get into the storyline!!
Carter Carter Carter. My god. Bad girl. 👀🔥🙌🏻 this book kept me up way past my bedtime. I loved it so very much. Carter owned my heart and soul. Perdie I wanted to smack a few times 🤣but only because Carter is perfection. I loved them together so much. Cannot wait for more.
Thank you to the author and the publisher, Carina Press & Carina Adores (Harlequin), for sharing an ARC of this book with me, through NetGalley!
“Well, if you’re my enemy, maybe I should switch to your side”
“What do adults do in bed?”
“I could do it without even laying a finger on that flushed pink skin of yours”
Definitely not what I was expecting !!! This book was really good !!! And I’d highly recommend you to read it. You know why??? It has the best romance tropes you can find in a book: forbidden relationship, one bed, working together, rivals to lovers … just great !!! There’s even a bit of an age gap between the main character and the love interest ( it’s more a older woman/younger man) if you want!!!! And while you’ll feel frustrated, stressed out and completely chaotic with Perdie, you’ll also feel her struggle in a world built for men that would be so much better if work atmospheres were a bit less misogynistic!!!!! And Carter … oh my goodness Carter … that man is something else … He’s sweet, caring but also rough and hard when he needs to be. He respects her. He is jealous. But tell me you don’t love it when the man falls first !!! And he grew up with two mums teaching him how to respect and cherish a woman !!! It’s a win-win situation and Perdie knows it… but struggles are struggles and the reader fights through all of them with her, hoping that one day she’ll realise … But I’m not going to go too far … I’ll just say, READ THIS BOOK !!!
“Been thinking about making you c**e since you opened your mouth in that deposition room”
“You shouldn’t let the perfect stand in the way of the good”
“I’m a tease because it makes you so angry”
“Hold on for me, baby. Hold on for just a few minutes … this shouldn’t take long”
From the very first chapter I was hooked in this book. The banter. The mayhem. The chemistry. You name it, this book has it. I’m not even going to tell you about the plot. If you’ve read the blurb, found my review, and have gotten this far… this is your sign to quit messing around and read this book.
Thank you to The Smuthood and the author Cat Wynn for an ARC of The Partner Track in exchange for my honest review.
I have to say I loved this book. I devoured it, read it in a single go, I did not want to put it down. I will also admit I let the cute cartoon cover lull me into a sense that this was going to be a cute rom-com office romance and immediately I was knocked out with the level of spice! It does NOT disappoint!
I have to also call out that as someone who lives in South Carolina and frequents Charleston I easily felt at home with the book. The author clearly knows Charleston well enough to nail down the people, the atmosphere, and the real sense of "Good Ol' Boys club" that is still alive and well today here. I also work in the legal industry in the south and I truly felt everything that Perdie did.
I loved the instant connection and chemistry of Perdie and Carter. I mean I could feel the attraction jumping off the page. I loved their banter back and forth. I loved Carter's honesty even in the face of Perdie fear. While I did dislike Perdie's almost irrational fear, I mean to me as a reader who can see Carter bleeding out for her, but I also loved it because it felt real. It gave me Sweet Home Alabama vibes where they are at the fair and trying to resist dancing together and the old southern women are like "Why do they fight it".
Also - the AMAZING friendship with Perdie and Lucille. I loved their love for each other truly. Everyone needs a friendship like that in their lives.
Ahem...the spice. Carter Leplan...SIR. That dirty wicked mouth...SO MANY HIGHLIGHTS.... The dirty talk was seriously top tier, and yeah Carter has easily moved into book boyfriend status.
Ok, this book was honestly, just what I needed. After I finished it, I dipped into Cat’s DMs to tell her how much I enjoyed and she said “I was just trying to write a good time.” And honestly? Yes. That’s exactly what this book was.
Partner Track is funny, steamier than it looks and full of tropes I love (see below). The book opens with one of my favorite kinds of meet cutes: the “she just eviscerated me professionally and I’m so hot for it” meet cute. The main characters are rival lawyers on opposite sides of the table. He’s young, hot and his reputation precedes him. She’s slightly older, has to fight twice as hard and is often overlooked. But when she bests him on an important case, he wants more. The heroine is kind of a bitch and he loves her for it…like…we stan a beta.
I thought the pacing was perfect. These two get into all kinds of situations and you’re just left smiling, watching it unfold. They get snowed in more than once, which is *chef’s kiss* You get all kinds of inappropriate workplace banter and honestly… So. Many. S E X scenes. But beyond how fun this book was, it touched on some serious topics as well. Like power imbalance and even commitment issues that stem from childhood trauma and seeking therapy to address them. Yes to this!
Shenanigans & tropes you can expect: -white, M/F, cishet couple -workplace/forced proximity -opposites attract -only one bed (DONE RIGHT) -rivals to lovers -dirty talking beta hero -couple toy play -age gap (she’s 7yrs older) -“she doesn’t do relationships, he does”
*Thank you to the author for the early copy via Netgalley
CW: strained parental relationship, on page explicit sex, on page alcohol & drug use, stalker/manipulative side character (challenged), pet/animal death, office sexism (challenged), seeking therapy
PARTNER TRACK will be living rent-free in my mind for a very long time. Only one bed trope, age gap romance, the guy falling first—all of these amazing tropes wrapped up in a must-read workplace romance!
This book pulled me in from the very beginning. Cat Wynn’s style is funny and light, but in no way does this diminish the importance of the topics faced—which range from misogyny to toxic relationships to workplace discrimination—nor does it hinder the sexiness of the couple. I immediately fell in love with Carter and Perdie. Their banter was full of tension and spunk from the get-go, and once you get Carter in closed quarters…friends, hold on to your panties. This man will rip them right off you with that dirty mouth of his! I fell head over heels in love!
While the relationship between Carter and Perdie starts off with fireworks, it does have its slow burn moments and the pining was absolutely exquisite. I also really adored the secondary characters—specifically Noah and Lucille, for whom I require a book immediately—and the beautiful friendship between Lucille and Perdie which was the definition of friendship and roommate goals! Special shoutout also goes to Bananas, the cutest pug that ever lived. Pet lovers, proceed with caution.
There were a few instances where I couldn’t completely get behind Perdie’s attitude or her choices, but nothing too major. I highly recommend this book to rom-com readers who enjoy a steamy workplace romance with rivals-to-lovers energy.
Thank you to the author for gifting me a copy. Opinions are my own.
Perdie Stone only requires three things in life: Lucille, her lifelong best friend. Bananas, their cute rescue pug. And she was offered a coveted partnership position at her Charleston law company.
When she won against hotshot Ivy League attorney Carter Leplan on a case, she knew that she has done well. Until, they're both stranded by a strange storm with only one room and one bed to share. When their paths keep crossing repeatedly, how would Perdie handle it?
Thoughts
This book had all the tropes you could think of: enemies to lovers, forced proximity, office romance and age gap. But it didn't give a strong impact.
The perspective of an older woman-younger portrayed Perdie to be more immature than Carter. The book also focused more on the sex element as a means for Perdie and Carter to get together but the smut did not deliver it at all. There wasn't a proper direction plot wise and a lot was left unanswered, I felt like I was reading it only because I wanted to get to the end.
There were also no trigger warnings in the book but there should have been.
I requested this book on NetGalley after seeing a good review of it on Instagram. I was not led astray, this was pretty good! There is a story line, the main characters are lawyers and the plot is mostly work related. There is also lots of spicy parts in the book. Perdie and Carter are just out there getting it all the time. The book was funny and sexy and had some emotional parts. If you like to read open door romances I would say this one is a decent read to check out. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the advance copy. The book is out on 4/26!
I picked up Partner Track partly because the cover is so objectively terrible I felt like they were trying to keep me from reading the book. But I had also heard that even though it looks like it takes place in a megachurch, the book was high heat. The book does have a lot of sex and does not take place in a megachurch.
Perdie is an associate at a firm in Charleston, SC. When we meet her, she is in a deposition and just about to eat the opposing counsel, Carter Leplan, for lunch. I love seeing characters we are told are smart and competent be smart and competent. It was great. For a minute.
Perdie is a mess, and I usually like a mess, but, everything in Partner Track is mess. The plot careens from scene to scene without a lot of sense of direction. A lot bothered me in the book, but here are three things that took this from tolerable to intolerable.
Carter Leplan, takes a partner position at Perdie’s lawfirm. He takes the position he knows she wants (knowing they weren’t even considering her does not make his actions ok), he does it without discussing it with her, he is senior to her in authority, he still wants to have a romantic relationship with her. Putting himself in a position of authority over her with the goal of having a relationship with her is an act of bad faith. And then he tells Perdie she needs to do more to fight for their relationship all I can say is, “nope!” I realize that we forgive a lot of red flags in romance, but I can’t forgive that red flag. Perdie blocks Lucille’s boyfriend’s number on Lucille’s phone without her consent. (Yes, Lucille had done something equally bad, yes they agree to be better at boundaries, but Perdie lost me at that point and it was way too early in the book for Perdie to lose me). The death of Bananas the Pug. It’s not that I think animals can’t die in romances. Beloved pets die and that can be a part of a character’s emotional arc. However, in this book it just felt kind of pointless. There are some nice moments between characters, some good bits of banter, and if you’re in it for the smut, it’s got good smut.
CWs: lots of alcohol, misogyny, sex pest boss, power imbalance relationship, the dog dies near the end.
I received this as an advance reader copy from Carina Press and NetGalley. My opinions are my own.
This was a fun, spicy, one bed, Rivals to lovers, work place romance. I really liked Perdie. I loved that she knew her worth, knew what she wanted and went for it. I love her and Lucilles friendship! I liked that Carter wanted to help Perdie with her career and make sure that the partners didn't walk all over her. All round a pretty good read!
4.5 stars. That was incredible and I loved it so much.
This is spicy right off the bat. The guy is fully into her and wants a relationship. He leads with sexy times and that's what she's comfortable with.
She's older. I think she's 39 to his 32, if I'm understanding the story correctly.
There is a breakup at the end, but it gives her a chance to go to therapy and start working through some things.
This is the author's first book and I CANNOT wait to see more from her. I marked it off from complete perfection because there are a few points where it skips around and is hard to follow or something deep isn't addressed very deeply. But I would still put this in the 90% percentile of books that I read. I really enjoyed it a LOT.
It deals with some craptastic stuff where this woman is passed over for promotion and has a pretty mysognistic environment at work. Sadly, it felt VERY true to life.
And then the guy is a TOTAL sweetheart. He is solely focused on her and there are no OW/OM in this (though she both contemplates other men and thinks he might be with other women... he's not). He is not perfect. When she freaks out (which she sadly does a lot), he often will say something like "I won't be waiting for you forever", which, while true, is a kinda shitty thing to say to a woman you love. But I forgive him because he really would have waited for her. He just can't help it cause he really thinks she's worth it.
I feel like there are some untold stories. Not sure if this author will stay with this friendship circle, but I would love to hear Lucille's story at the very least.
Love this and HIGHLY recommend. I found it on Libby from my library. It was not available on Kindle Unlimited!
I was very kindly sent a copy of this book by the author but all opinions are my own.
I’d just come off reading 3 books that needed a bit of emotional analysis & damn, if this smutty little romp isn’t exactly what I needed! That’s not to say that our characters - Perdie & Carter - are without dimension. This book is perfect for anyone who loves the office romance trope, forced proximity, amazing female friendship, SNOWED IN!, emotional development & therapy!!!! ONLY O N E BED!!!!!! This book had fucking everything! My only gripe is that I finished this in less than a day but at least I have it on hand when I want to reread 🥰
Thank you to Cat Wynn for kindly sending me this book.
This ARC was provided to me via Kindle, Carina Press & Carina Adores (Harlequin) and by #NetGalley. Opinions expressed are completely my own.
I had a lot of problems with this one. The abundance of pointless sex that seemed to demean an already unlikable character. Misogyny is rampant. Dog death, not enough background on the main and her best friend. It teases a love arc between the two. What’s the point of you don’t elaborate on more.
Sometimes sexy times aren’t enough. This is a fun story that falls into a lot of tropes.: age gap - she’s 39, he’s 32, snowed in with only one bed available, workplace romance etc. Perdie Stone just beat out a Harvard lawyer in a case that she hopes will make her partner at her firm. Trapped for a night together at a hotel she shares a room with Carter Leplan. It goes all hot and steamy but they live on different coasts. And then he shows up as the new partner in her law firm.
This story has lots of fun moments but there are others that sort of make you cringe. Told from Perdie’s POV she doesn’t understand why Carter took a job with her firm. But that doesn’t keep them from sexy times. At times both behave immaturely. They jump to conclusions and get jealous over little issues. I would gladly have given up one of the intimate scenes for them to have an honest conversation that wasn’t what is your favorite color. You get very little background on Carter other than he’s always been privileged, handsome and smart. I’m not sure how he relates to Perdie and her background.
This is a good debut novel but I felt some things were brought up and then dropped. Did he really not care if he has kids. It deserves more than a 30 second conversation on an airplane. Thank you to NetGalley and Carina Press & Carina Adores for an eARC in exchange for an honest review.
