Dungeon Core Mountain #1

A (Mostly) Evil Dungeon

Rate this book
What’s this? A new dungeon core book?

One with talking traps, vampire bats, and mice who want to kill a dungeon core? A LitRPG trilogy with a focus on power progression and cultivation?

It must be…A (Mostly) Evil Dungeon!

When Tyler’s parents kick him out for being cursed, he does what every guy would do – he finds a mage who’ll teach him deadly magic. The kind where he can really kick someone’s ass.

Unfortunately, the mage sees something special in him. That should have been a good thing, but what he sees is something rare. A power that must be harnessed right away…

Soon, Tyler is killed, turned into a dungeon core, and trapped inside a mountain. With his new dungeon powers, he can create monsters, mobs, and traps.

But the mountain is a dangerous place, crammed with creatures who’ve survived and evolved in the darkness. Not only that, but it is often plundered by adventurers who’d love nothing more than to capture a precious dungeon core.

If he’s to have any chance of surviving and escaping, he’ll have to become the most dangerous thing in the mountain…a (mostly) evil dungeon.

A (Mostly) Evil Dungeon is the start of a fun dungeon core trilogy. All character arcs will be finished in 3 books, and all loose ends tied up. Books 2 and 3 are out in September. It has all the dungeon core stuff we all love, as well as big dollops of leveling up, cultivation and power progression for a bunch of lovable characters!

I read dungeon core novels for the dungeon core. I can understand authors wanting to add in other perspectives to broaden the view of what's surrounding the core, but when a full half of the novel follows someone who's not the core, it just becomes tedious to read.

As for the half of the story that involves the dungeon core, as of 60% into the story he's only made 2 traps, a couple of useless monsters that can't fight, no rooms, and a bunch of tunnels. The most satisfying aspect of core novels is watching them grow, develop, and discover new ways to defend themselves but this story has been a complete void in the areas of a dungeon core story that I actually enjoy reading.

I love seeing a core plan ahead and strive against invaders until they finally succeed. Our MC at one point gives up fighting and basically swears subservience to someone else. He technically becomes an apprentice, but the story already established that the masters can tell apprentices to do just about anything and even do near-suicidal actions as long as there's a sliver of a chance for survival. So in effect, our MC willingly becomes an oathbound servant to a rather gross character that I only wanted to see die.

Dungeon core novels are one of my favorite sub-genres but I can't even get myself to continue this one. Did not finish.

This is an example of good writing with a bad idea.

The writing is good. The characters are fine. The basic mechanics make do, but are horribly weak. The idea of a core and a rat brood battling it out is funny, but the dungeons execution is very lacking. The situational aspects are well written, but the building details are horrible. Take the style of writing, the character creation, the situational understanding, put all of it in a sub genre the author is more familiar with and this is a five star in the making.

Book one

Mistakes: I found two. This is a short read at 240 pages.

Plot: A battle between a dungeon core, rats, and a mouse. Very boring. I skipped entire sections of the mouses story.

Characters: I just don't like any of them. There was no draw to any of the characters.

The floor smells funky and the bedsprings creak

Also has a distinctly “something ate here and left crumbs” vibe. There is a significant rat and mouse problem, and the owners are in need of new staff. Has all the typical problems of new author series, and some cliche bits and bobs in the rpg genre. Unique but unexplained and I detailed mechanics of the world, and a very close minded set of protagonists… or antagonists? Are they all evil? All I can see is that they are controlled loosely by their masters who they follow extremely devoutly, without hesitation or question… something of an oddity but let’s run with it. Also not much of dungeon building for a dungeon-type book. Fun little read though.

+1 star if the author gets advance readers and an editor by the third book, or looks closer at plot holes in the creepy walls…. Is that thing looking back at me?

fun

An outcast kid gets betrayed by his master and made into a dungeon core. He then fumbles his way into growing and becoming enemies with a local brood of rats. The rats have a civil war and then the villainous usurper takes the dungeon under his proverbial wing. The ousted rats plot to return. But things grew worse, both sides grew stronger. And both had to retreat. It ends setting up for the next book.

The book needs a little more editing, but there’s nothing too bothersome. It reads like it wants to be a kung fu movie, and the world and system exposition leaves almost everything vague as everything is random and all Paths unique. It was a fun read, entertaining, pretty well told, and I’m a little curious to see where it goes.

Enjoy

Not quite to my taste

I can see the angle the story is taking and the sort of rivalry conflict that has been set up but the actual writing and storytelling didn't catch my interest though to make me want to continue further into the series

A new take on the genre

Well written, I really enjoyed the thought of a martial artist mouse. I will be waiting for the rest of the trilogy.

A tale of two characters

I like the leveling system and the history and lore of this world. I also like the two characters and their goal to destroy the other.
